An Open Letter to My Sons’ Special Education Teacher

Weeper alert.

special education Teacher thank you

My twins just began their last week at the school they have attended for the past four years. We’ve moved into a new district, and have to say goodbye to the sweet little school that has felt like home since my oldest child’s first day of kindergarten. The change is both exciting and bittersweet. It’s so hard to find the words to say thank you to the amazing people who have meant so much to us; from the principals, secretaries, amazing teachers, and para-pros, all the way to the kind custodian who high-fives each child as they put up their lunch trays.

But the person to whom we owe the biggest thank you is my sons’ special education teacher. My boys have ADHD and learning delays, and their special education teacher has been with them through two rounds of kindergarten all the way to second grade. She is enthusiastic, kind, and loving, and we will miss her beyond words. Here’s what I want her to know.

Thank you for every single IEP meeting.

Boy, we’ve spent hours around that conference table. We have laughed, cried a little, and worked tirelessly to create a plan that helps those two little boys succeed. You have been their champion and advocate as much as I have, and I can’t imagine going through this process in the future without you. I know teachers are slightly filled with dread when it’s time for another endless round of IEP meetings, but you’ve always made them positive and encouraging, and I’ve left every one feeling incredibly proud of my kids’ achievements and hopeful for their future.

I think you might actually be Wonder Woman.

Twenty minutes of homework often makes me want to run away from home and join the circus, but you do this ALL DAY!! Not only do you deal with my kids’ stalling and whining, you’ve got a class full of other kids doing the same thing. And yet, you keep going with a smile on your face. I don’t know where you find your endless reserves of patience, or how you stay so adorably perky, but I’m in awe of it. If you don’t already have a superhero cape and a tiara in your supply closet, you deserve one.

Thank you for believing in my kids.

Honestly, sometimes you’ve believed in them more than I did! You saw that they were often capable of doing better, and you would create a learning plan, or a reward system, or any number of things to help them reach their full potential. And I’ll admit, there were times when I thought, “He can’t do that! That will never work!” But I was wrong, and you were right. And I’m awfully glad that I trusted you.

I’m not convinced that you sleep.

I regularly get emails from you at 9:00 at night, or at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. Please know that I notice those time stamps, and I am overcome with gratitude. The fact that you are spending your own time thinking about the great week my son had, or worrying about why he struggled, shows a level of caring and dedication that I would never have expected, but I appreciate more than I can tell you.

Thank you for loving them.

I know teachers care about their students, but I truly believe that the bond we’ve formed over the years is special. You have shown me every week, with every folder overflowing with work covered in encouraging comments, with every note and phone call home, with every time you’ve stopped me in the hall to share a funny anecdote, that you love them. And I believe that you have played a huge role in every achievement they’ve made over the last four years. You’ve taught them to read, and you’ve taught them math, but more than that, you’ve taught them to have confidence and to believe in themselves. I know they will have wonderful teachers, but there will never be anyone like you.

A Parent Letter to Special Education Teachers

  • fullspedahead

  • Guest Blogger , Helpful Tips , Parents , Teacher Tips

I had a parent write a letter to their special education teachers to share what it is really like and how we can work together as a team. Here are a few things to think about:

“To My Child’s Teacher,

I have been my child’s protector his whole life.  As his mom I knew there was more going on that just a delay with his development.  I sat in doctors offices and with specialists who brushed me off and made me feel like I was a crazy overreacting mommy.  I’ve sat in meetings where I was asked not to bring my son back because they couldn’t meet his needs (they were all polite but still…gut punch).  The thing was I felt like I also wasn’t meeting his needs and I had no direction.  I didn’t sleep much…thank you doctor google…

It is very hard for me to trust others with my child because of past experience.  Please be patient with me, I’ll come around.  My hope is to work with you to create the best opportunity for my child to succeed.  At the beginning of each school year I wonder about the worst and most of the time by the end of the school year I’m tearing up at the thought of not working with you as closely anymore.

I’m sad to hear how difficult teaching has become these past two years with all the pandemic changes and uncertainty.  I wish I knew what I could do to support you better.  I may not say it enough but I appreciate everything you do for my child (and lets be honest…to support me).

I am my sons biggest advocate, I can also be your’s too…

One Special Needs Mom

I hope this parent letter gives you some perspective about what happens outside of the school walls.

Here is another parent letter to continue this thought process.

Introduction Letter to Teacher from Parent about Child

When to Write a Letter to Your Child’s Teacher

Before you put pen to paper or start typing, it’s crucial to determine the right occasion for reaching out to your child’s teacher. Here are some typical scenarios when it would be appropriate to send a letter or an email:

  • Introduction Letter : Especially pertinent if your child is transferring mid-year. It’s an opportunity to provide a brief introduction of both you and your child.
  • Addressing Special Needs or Circumstances : For instance, if your child requires daily medication during school hours or has a condition like diabetes.
  • Excuse Letters : To explain missed class time or instances of tardiness.
  • Appreciation Notes : To acknowledge and thank the teacher for a particular gesture or effort that was kind, noteworthy, or went above and beyond.
  • Addressing School-related Issues : If there’s a specific problem or incident in school that you feel needs attention.
  • Academic Concerns : To discuss grades or subjects your child seems to be struggling with.
  • Behavioral Inquiries : To seek insights on how your child is performing or behaving, especially if you have concerns.
  • Engaging in Your Child’s Learning : To learn more about a topic they’re studying and to understand how you can support their learning at home.

How to email your child’s teacher

Most teachers have an official email at the school. If they didn’t include email information for parents in the regular beginning of the school year packets most kids bring home, you can call the office and ask. The secretary at the front desk should know or be able to find out for you. Follow the steps below to email your child’s teacher.

  • Confirm from the teacher if he/she is comfortable communicating via email. This will help in ensuring you receive timely feedback.
  • Start the email with a positive comment. Appreciate the way the teacher have helped your child or how much your child is fond of the teacher.
  • The correct email address of the teacher
  • Use a clear subject which includes your child’s name
  • Greeting, should be polite and refer to the teacher by the name your child uses.
  • Introduce yourself and your child ensure you indicate your names.
  • Have a brief statement of the matter in question.
  • Request for information if need be.
  • Request for a meeting if need be.
  • Have a polite ending and sign your email
  • Consider when to write an email. Why not use a letter, a text or call the teacher? It’s important to understand the circumstances under which to use an email. An email can be used as evidence of communication and it’s fast compared to letters. The teacher can respond to an email even during non-teaching times.
  • Collect necessary information that you need to include in the email. This will help to write a comprehensive email that is clear and direct to the point. If there is need to show prove of pictures or other documents, ensure you attach to the mail. If the email is for enquiry, ensure the information you are seeking is not in the school website.
  • Keep the email as brief as possible. Long emails are tedious to read. Ensure you are precise and to the point.
  • Keep the tone positive and respectful. Aim to keep the language calm. For example, if you are discussing a learning issue stick to the facts. Don’t use accusing words like “my child is not getting attention.” Rather say “I have realized my child has lost interest in drawing, which he likes doing. I will appreciate your support. Can you set up a meeting we discuss this in detail.”
  • Be honest in your email. It’s important to note children are honest and any untruthful information in your letter may be discovered by what the child might say.
  • Proofread your email to ensure there are no error and you have covered everything you wanted in the mail before sending it.
  • End on a nice note. Thank the teacher for the good work and taking time to read your mail. Say that you look forward to hearing her/his thoughts.
  • Don’t copy the principal. Just include other teachers if they are concerned with the subject in relation to your child.
  • Don’t expect an instant response; especially on weekends, holidays or evening. Teachers have families and other personal issues to attend to and they might not be able to respond during non-working hours.

How to write a letter/note to your child’s teacher

Email is typically the best form of contact these days. However, you may need to handwrite a note now and then for tardiness and thank you letters. Remember always to use your best handwriting. Here is an easy-to-use process for writing a letter or note to your child’s teacher.

  • Use clean paper. Personalized stationery is a good option, but avoid flashy colors and backgrounds unless it’s a thank you note, which is more informal.
  • Choose a writing implement that won’t smudge.
  • Put the date at the top of the page in your best handwriting.
  • Use the same format for writing a letter as you would for an email.
  • When you sign at the bottom, use your signature and put a printed version of your name below.
  • Proofread everything and make corrections. You can re-write on a new sheet of paper if you feel necessary.
  • Tri-fold the paper for a tidy, finished appearance.

Letter to Teacher from Parent about Bullying

The Principal

Ref: Our Child Being Bullied in School

I am Lucas’s mother who is a student in your school grade 4S. It unfortunate to learn that my son is being bullied in school by three boys in grade 6F. These are Matthew, Sam and Steven. Lucas reported to me about being bullied the first time three weeks ago. He was harassed by the said boys during lunch time and they took his lunch. I assured him it’s a one off thing, but he came back last Tuesday 15th March claiming the same boys teased him calling him “dwarf.”

Yesterday Lucas came home with his school bag zip ripped off. He explained that this was due to the boys tossing him around after classes as he was walking towards the school bus. This is really upsetting him, making him hate school. It has become a struggle in the morning for him to wake up and prepare for school.

As his mother am very worried and request to school to take the necessary action against the boys and ensure this comes to a stop.

I would appreciate an opportunity to come over and discuss the matter further and see how we can help my son recover.

Your support will he highly appreciated.

I will appreciate to hear from you as soon as possible.

Introduction Letter to Teacher from Parent about Child

Ref: Introduction of Grace Michael

Am excited for the start of 2021-2022 academic year. My daughter grace will be joining your class, she really liked you and this is so exciting to her. She is a smart kid with very good grades. She like reading and writing poems. She likes school as this is a place, she is able to express herself and make many friends.

While Grace is a sharp student, she does not like being confronted in public. This makes her to withdraw and go quite for the rest part of the day. This makes her scared.

She loves signing and writing poems and considering you are a music teacher this is what makes her so excited to be in your class.

I hope you will accord her the support she needs to better her grades and to maintain her good performance.

Looking forward for a great academic year.

Yours grateful

Thank You Letter to Teacher from Parent at the End of the Year.

Ref: Appreciation

Am Mrs. Williams mother to Stephen Williams. Am writing to express our gratitude for our son improved performance. By the beginning of the year we had our fears on how he will perform in consideration of his previous grade performance.

With your support and encouragement, he has really improved and his character has changed too, from a very preserved child to be outspoken and be able to speak his mind out. In the same year he started playing soccer.

We really appreciate the good work you have done in his life and hope this will continue even in the following year.

Once again thank you.

How to Deliver Hand-Written Letters

There are three easy ways to give a letter to a teacher. First, you can mail it to the school in their name. This method takes the longest since mail may need days or even weeks to arrive.

The other two ways to get a handwritten letter to the teacher are hand delivery. You can opt to send the note to school with your child. The downside to sending letters with a kid is that they can get lost, forgotten, or dirty along the way. Finally, you can deliver the letter yourself. This creates a personal connection and allows you to thank the teacher or ask additional questions.

Dos and Don’ts When Writing to Child’s Teacher

Teachers often have thirty or more students. Even if they have a teacher’s aid, it’s still hard to keep track of everyone. If you don’t speak up and communicate with your child’s teacher, they won’t know you need to talk to them. However, there are good and bad ways to compose a letter. Here are a few tips for what you should and should not do when writing to the teacher.

  • Use a formal tone for the letter and be polite
  • Be proactive
  • Use a handwritten letter for a more personal touch and an email for other occasions
  • Remain concise and stay on topic
  • Edit out anything unnecessary
  • Ask questions
  • Offer to help or work together if your child is having any difficulties
  • Be patient and give them plenty of time to respond

Don’t

  • Talk down to the teacher
  • Be negative
  • Use rude language
  • Forget to spellcheck and use proper grammar
  • Make demands
  • Lay blame or issue accusations

Final Thoughts

Writing a letter or email to your child’s teacher can be frustrating, especially when you barely know them. Luckily, you can create a fantastic, easy-to-read message that the teacher will appreciate with the right tips and format. Keep your letters brief, courteous, and to the point for the best results. The clearer you are about what you want or need from them, the more positive and helpful the results are likely to be.

Thank You Letter to Teacher from Parent

If your child loves going to school, youve got a teacher to thank for that. And even if thats not the case, writing a letter to your childs teacher, appreciating their efforts, might motivate them to work harder. Expressing gratitude to another person is always a win-win, and in this case, it goes to someone whose job is one of the toughest, and often thankless. Here are a few ideas on what to include in a thank you letter to a teacher from a parent:

Some Parental Homework Before you begin, some planning will help personalize your letter. Sit with your child and outline the things she likes about her teacher and ask her to relate her story about how she helped her. To a teacher, little could be more touching than to hear appreciation in the words of their students.

Acknowledge their Importance in Your Lives as a Family As we grow, we may not remember all the lessons we were taught, but we never forget the feeling of having had a good teacher. Let them know theyre an important part of your lives as a family, especially if theyve been teaching your child for a long time.

Appreciate their Attention to Your Childs Special Needs Every child is a universe of their own with unique learning needs, some present greater challenges, often involving going an extra mile to ensure inclusion in a diverse classroom, while keeping everyone equally engaged. Ms. Leona Willis English Teacher Lake View Elementary 3267 Walkers Ridge West Chicago, IL 60185

To the Wonderful and Kind Ms. Willis,

My husband and I cant thank you enough for teaching our daughter Jenny all these years. We are excited for her moving on to middle school, yet sad that you wont be her teacher anymore. As you know her so well, Jenny cant understand emotions, so you can imagine how deeply touched we were when she came home from Lake View Elementary for the last time with brimming eyes, and said: Why cant Ms. Willis be my teacher in the new school?

Thank you for giving Jenny a wonderful 6 years of warmth and inspiration along with your great teachings.

Because you are such an amazing teacher, and a good-hearted person, that you went out of your way to make Jennys classmates understand her Aspergers and not pick on her, we are so lucky to have you in our lives.

We will miss you!

Warm regards,

(Signature) Nancy E. Martin

A Heartfelt Thank You to Special Ed Teachers

thank you letter to special education teacher from parent

How do you say thank you to someone who has given you your child back? Someone who has taken a nonverbal child and helped them find their voice. There aren’t words for that.

My middle son was born six weeks early. And when he was two he was not speaking very much at all. Understandably, he was frustrated by it and had horrible tantrums. Thankfully we got into  Early Steps . Early Steps is an early intervention program designed to help children from infant to 36 months that have significant delays that are likely to result in a developmental delay. Middle was able to get weekly speech services at home through them. It helped some. As a result, he went from maybe twenty words to fifty words. But, he was still behind in speech as well as motor skills. He was placed in an Ipeeps class (special needs preschool class for 3 and 4 year-olds). After that, our world changed.

I met these wonderful special ed teachers, Kara Creighton and Beth Provost the week after school started after we got Middle’s IEP issues situated. I walked in with tears threatening to come out at any time. How do you leave your baby, who can’t communicate, with strangers? Ms. C looked at me and said, “don’t worry mama, we got him.” It was like she knew how nervous I was and those words were such a reassurance to me. I knew he would be fine.

These two women are my lifeline. They taught Middle so well in fact that now he is a chatterbox. He did one year with them and is now in VPK and reading.

So, this year, my Tiny Tot is in their class. He loves Mrs. P.; she is his buddy. He started in August and within six weeks he was saying words! Finally, my nonverbal baby was talking! He was counting and saying letters. His speech now comes and goes but it’s there!

How to show appreciation for the class

Last year, with Middle’s class, I started doing a project with the class. I took a photo of the kids with what they love about each teacher. Not all the kids were verbal but they held a sign and I put the photos in a collage for the teachers. The ESE department in general at most schools is massively underfunded so you could always make a donation to that fund. Or buy a gift card to a place you know your teacher shops from and give it to your teacher. That way the money you donate stays in your class with your child versus the whole department. I’m sure you have some unused toys lying around at home? Stuffed animals? Donate them to a special needs class.

Extra clothes that aren’t in shape to sell? Buy books for the class at the book fair. Buy them copy paper. I have been known to pester my teachers for things they need or want. We have a much larger class this year and I do not want them spending their own money time and time again for supplies.

How to show appreciation to the person

These special ed teachers are people and some have families of their own. We all know teachers aren’t paid enough by far. Find out their favorite restaurant and get a few gift cards. Most teachers have a ton of personalized cups, signs, and bags. So, if you want to do something along those lines, maybe a t-shirt or a key-chain. Pedicures and manicures or a massage would be such a treat for these superheroes. You can never go wrong with a heartfelt letter and flowers.

TO ALL THE SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHERS OUT THERE, THANK YOU DOESN’T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH. YOU DESERVE SO MUCH PRAISE. SO, THANK YOU FOR GIVING US OUR BABIES BACK; FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND ENDLESS LOVE. THANK YOU FOR CELEBRATING OUR MILESTONES WITH US AND CRYING TEARS OF FRUSTRATION AT SETBACKS AND DELAYS IN PAPERWORK. WITHOUT YOU, WE WOULDN’T BE THE PARENTS WE ARE.

Tips for Writing a Great Thank You Note to a Teacher

Writing a thank you note is about more than just showing appreciation. You also need to make sure the note fits the situation and the person receiving it. Keep these tips in mind to write a thank you letter to a teacher:

  • Make it personal. Share specific memories or details about what makes this teacher special.
  • Use names. Address the teacher by name and mention your child by name too.
  • Stay focused. A longer letter can be okay, but a short note is a good way to express your thanks without getting off track on other details. A short thank you note to a teacher stays focused.
  • Show your voice. A note doesn't have to be formal and professional. It's more special if you use your own voice and let your personality show.
  • Write by hand. While a thank you email is just fine, a handwritten note will mean more.

Express How You Feel

The key to writing a good teacher thank you note is expressing how you feel. If you still need a little inspiration, consider using thank you poems or adding quotes about gratitude to your letter. No matter what kind words you use, any teacher will love getting a thank you note.

Aside from the fact that the idea of teachers usually getting summers off is essentially a myth, everyone should understand that teaching is one of the most difficult and important professions in the world.

Jump ahead to these sections:

Why write a thank you letter to a teacher, how to write a thank you letter to a teacher: 4 steps, thank you letter to teacher examples.

Odds are good you’ve had a teacher who helped you become a better, or at least smarter, person. Maybe you want to express your feelings by writing a thank you letter to that teacher.

This guide will help. It offers tips and examples to ensure your thank you letter to a teacher makes the right impression.

Knowing why you’re writing a thank you letter to a teacher is just as important as writing the actual letter itself. Teachers impact each individual student in various ways. If you clearly define why you feel the urge to write this letter, you’re far more likely to write a strong one.

Potential reasons include:

  • Teachers inspire us to pursue our dreams . They can spark our passions. In some instances, they can even help us cope with personal issues. That said, it’s important to remember that some teachers also help us in very practical ways. For instance, maybe a college professor helped you network in your industry, giving you an early career boost. They deserve credit for that.
  • Teachers eventually retire . You don’t need to wait until a former teacher retires before sending them a thank you letter. Any time is a good time to let an educator know you appreciate them. That’s why thank you letters to teachers make smart teacher retirement gifts . They let teachers know their hard work over the years changed lives.
  • They helped you when you were headed down the wrong path . That’s a good reason to write a thank you letter to a teacher. Most educators want their students to like them. Those who decide that helping their students grow and learn is more important than being liked are no exception.

Your reason for writing a thank you letter to a teacher will influence your process to some degree. That said, these general steps usually apply:

List specific experiences

Teachers always enjoy receiving thank you notes from former students. It’s unlikely the teacher you’re contacting won’t appreciate receiving a thank you letter.

That said, they’ll appreciate it even more if it’s specific. Writing a thank you letter for a teacher that tells them they were an “inspiration” or a “great motivator” is a kind gesture. It’s even kinder, though, to include specific memories or details that illustrate precisely how that teacher inspired or motivated you. This shows you took the time to reflect on your experiences in their class before writing the letter. It also shows their influence was so significant that you still remember those specific experiences.

Make a list of these details before writing your letter. When it comes time to actually draft it, decide which makes the most sense to include. Reach out to former classmates if you think they’ll remember such details too.

Assess your skills

We’re not all strong writers. Some people can effectively communicate how they feel through written language. Some can’t. No one is a “bad person” if writing just isn’t one of their talents.

Of course, when writing a thank you letter to a teacher, your goal is to communicate your feelings in words. Be honest with yourself if that’s a task you struggle with.

It’s entirely fine to write a thank you letter for a teacher that says something along the lines of, “You know I was never great with words, but I think these thank you quotes from some of the poets we learned about in your class will let you know why you were one of the best teachers I ever had.”

Write a draft

Sending the first draft is one of the most common mistakes people make when sending any type of thank you letter. Yes, your first draft may be perfect. Regardless, you shouldn’t merely assume. You still need to reread it, and perhaps ask friends and family members to read it as well, before sending it.

A first draft often gives you the chance to get your thoughts and feelings out. You don’t need to know everything you want to say when writing a thank you letter for a teacher, even if you’ve done some planning first. You might still need to pen a first draft that involves writing out everything that comes to mind. Once you’ve done that, you can revisit it, seeing if there are ways to make it more organized or clear.

Choose your medium

The content of your thank you letter to a teacher isn’t the only important aspect of the message. You should also consider how your medium might strike them.

For instance, some teachers are perfectly happy receiving email thank you notes. However, other teachers are happier receiving “snail mail” letters on gorgeous stationery. Think about what your teacher would like before sending the letter.

You don’t need to have been a teacher’s student to write a thank you letter for a teacher. Educators also appreciate receiving thank-you notes from parents and colleagues. These examples of thank you letters to a teacher will cover those types of messages. They’ll help you write a strong letter no matter what your relationship with a teacher may be.

Teacher thank you letter from a student

Mr. Norman,

Hi, it’s Tom, from your 2004 history class. It’s no secret we didn’t always get along when I was in your class. By now it’s also no secret you only ever had my best interests at heart. Because of your hard work, I’ve learned that the struggles of the past are present in the future.

None of that would have happened without you. I’m sorry for not understanding you were only trying to help me when I was your student, but I’m not sorry for any of the experiences you gave me.

Teacher thank you letter from a parent

Dear Mrs. Johnson:

My child has had some good teachers over the years, as well as some bad ones. You were one of the few truly amazing ones.

The changes we saw in Doug throughout the time he was your student are indescribable, and they continue to benefit from your hard work to this day. Thanks for making my job so much easier!

Teacher thank you letter from a colleague

We both know how challenging this career can be. However, being a teacher is easier if you have support from your colleagues. I was lucky enough to get that support from you. Thank you for helping me overcome the difficulties we all face. Enjoy retirement. You’ve earned it!

Thank you letter to a professor

Dear Professor Doherty,

I want to thank you for teaching what was easily my favorite course in college. Your passion for the subject made me far more confident in my choice of career. The fact that you were so responsive when I needed assistance and worked with me during your office hours when you could have been using that time to grade papers or plan lessons is something I will always deeply appreciate.

Naturally, I also deeply appreciate the way you helped me with networking when I was preparing for graduation. I recently landed a job at a very prestigious firm, and while I’m proud of myself and my accomplishments (thanks, again, to the confidence you instilled in me), I strongly believe your influence played a big role in helping me secure this position. Thank you so much for caring about your students and helping us thrive even after we left your class.

That’s an important point, and it’s one of the reasons I wrote this letter. Before taking your class, I didn’t fully understand just how greatly a professor can impact the course of someone’s life. You made me realize that when a professor takes their job as seriously as you, they can truly help their students achieve their dreams.

Thank you letter to a teacher during COVID

Dear Mrs. Higgins,

Adapting to remote learning last year was tough on me and a lot of the other students. I think that made us forget that it also must have been very difficult for you. Switching to a completely new style of teaching while also coping with all the stresses of the pandemic must have been a challenge.

I just want you to know that while I’m sure that situation was stressful and frustrating for you, it never once seemed as though you took out your frustrations on your students. You were always patient with us as we adjusted to our new learning environment.

You also went the extra mile to ensure your lessons were as thorough and interesting as possible. I’m sure you know even better than I do that a remote learning lesson can be very different from an in-person lesson. I don’t know much about teaching, but I do know it was clear (at least to me) that you made some very intentional changes to the way you taught to make sure everyone was learning the material. Not every teacher would put in that much effort during a scary time, and I’m very thankful that you did.

Thank you letter to a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Hey! I know it’s been a few years since I was your student, but I randomly saw online that this week is Teacher Appreciation Week.

That got me thinking about the important teachers in my life. I can’t honestly say that I believe every teacher I ever had positively influenced my life, but I can say that the influence of the good teachers far outweighed the influence of the weaker ones in the long run. At least, that’s been my experience.

You were the best teacher I ever had. I don’t think I’m telling you anything you don’t know that the opinion of the student body regarding your teaching methods was split. Some students thought you were too strict and held us to unreasonably high standards.

Others deeply appreciated the way you motivated us to achieve our true potential. Sometimes, being a good teacher must be like being a good coach. The strongest coaches demand the best from the players on their teams because they know their players are capable of great achievements. You held us to such high standards because you had enough respect for us to know we were able to rise to great heights if we applied ourselves. That has impacted my life in far more ways than I can count.

Thank you letter to a teacher for the end of the school year

Dear Mrs. Brandt,

Happy End of the School Year! After dealing with students who weren’t always the most well-behaved group, I bet you’re looking forward to some well-deserved time off.

I’m usually happy when the school year ends. I definitely don’t hate school, but I obviously don’t mind not having to wake up early every morning to head to school when I’d rather sleep in or just enjoy my free time.

I’m still excited about the end of the school year (and yes, I do plan on spending part of the summer working on my novel, like you encouraged me to). Still, I get a little bit sad when I think about the fact that I won’t be your student next year. You worked hard to make your class as fun and interesting as possible while also making sure that we actually learned something from it. Not all teachers are good at making a class both enjoyable and genuinely valuable.

Again, you’ve definitely earned a break after this year. I hope you set aside as much time for yourself as you can. Thanks for a wonderful class and for caring so much about your students’ success!

Teacher Appreciation Ideas for Special Education Teachers 2022

I’ve collected 25+ teacher appreciation ideas for 2022 for you! Teaching has looked quite a bit different since last year and teachers have come up against unexpected challenges. It’s been an adventure for everyone, and supporting children on the autism spectrum and children with other special needs is always a challenging and rewarding job. Let’s celebrate our teachers (and therapists, home aides, etc.!) with these teacher appreciation ideas for 2021.

Teacher Appreciation Week Ideas 2021

Table of Contents

When is virtual teacher appreciation week?

In 2022, virtual teacher appreciation week will take place from May 2nd – May 6th, 2022.

Virtual Teacher Appreciation Ideas

To make the most of teacher appreciation week and to thank your child’s teachers virtually here are some fun ideas!

Create a thank you video

If your little one is speaking, record a video where he or she is saying “thank you”!

If your child isn’t speaking yet, that’s ok too. Record him or her playing with a favourite toy or game or if the teacher or therapist has been working on fine motor skills, record a short video showing your child holding a marker and drawing.

I can assure you your child’s teacher will love and be so proud of your little one’s progress.

Create a sideshow

If you’ve taken some photos throughout homeschooling and virtual sessions this past year, create a little slideshow for your child’s teacher.

Even if you haven’t been taking photos throughout the year, take some cute photos of your little one, his or her art projects and printables from this year and combine it all into a simple slideshow. What a beautiful, meaningful gift that doesn’t cost anything!

Draw a picture

Have your little one draw a special picture to gift his or her teacher. This will be especially well received if drawing and writing has been an IEP goal this year and is something your child may’ve struggled with but has progressed in.

Write a letter

If your child can write, maybe give a few writing prompts and present a special handwritten letter to your child’s teacher.

Create a teacher appreciation sign

Have you heard of teacher appreciation signs? Basically your child holds up a sign with a special message, like “thank you!”, or “you’re amazing!” or some other uplifting message of gratitude.

This would work perfectly for a virtual teacher celebration.

Teacher Appreciation Sign Ideas

  • “Thank you!”
  • “You’re AMAZING!”
  • “I’m grateful for you!”
  • “Thanks for everything you taught me this year!”
  • “You’re an AMAZING teacher and I love you!”
  • “Thank you for being YOU!”

Teacher Appreciation Week Themes

Why not celebrate every day all week long? Make it even more fun by choosing a different celebration them each day!

  • Spa theme – give your child’s teacher a small spa themed gift each day such as a scented candle, a face mask or a lip balm.
  • Candy theme – gift a different candy each day of the week!
  • World surprises theme – choose a special little gift from a different country each day of the week.

Virtual Teacher Appreciation Gifts

What do teachers really want.

I can’t speak for all teachers, but I’m guessing your child’s teacher just wants to feel appreciated more than anything else. Any gift that says “I see you and I appreciate you!” will a welcome gift.

As an autism center owner, I have received so many lovely gifts over the years from drawings, to photo books, to videos, to foods from the families’ countries of origin, to cashmere scarves. I just appreciate that the family took the time to think about me and choose a special gift as a token of appreciation. That means the world to me!

How much should you spend on a teacher gift?

Choosing a thoughtful and personalized gift is more important than the cost of the gift, in my opinion, however, you may also want to consider how much time your child is spending with the teacher, therapist, classroom aide or home tutor.

If you are purchasing a gift for your child’s classroom aide who spends the entire day helping him or her thrive at school, you may want to spend a little more on really showing how much you value his or her support.

In general, parents typically spend $25-$50 per gift. If this seems like a high budget to you, don’t worry. Create a really thoughtful homemade gift instead. I’m sure your child’s teacher will cherish it!

A gift card

A gift card to a favorite place is such a treat! If you know your child’s teacher loves Starbucks get a card for there. Some other ideas? Give a gift card to a bath and body store for spa products, give a gift card for a nice restaurant, a spa day, a hair appointment, a manicure and pedicure or a massage. I’m sure your child’s teacher will love it!

An online course

If know your child’s teacher has been dreaming of traveling to Italy and has been wanting to learn Italian, why not gift them a virtual Italian class .

Udemy has courses on every subject and they are really reasonably priced and run regular sales! You can gift a course that can be accessed at any time in the future – no need to sign up for specific dates.

You may also want to consider purchasing one of my autism courses to help them in their work.

The Autism Activities Bundle

Why not my hugely popular Autism Activities Bundle for the teacher in your child’s life? Teachers, therapists and school aides are often short on time. They want to offer their little students the best activities possible, but creating activities takes a huge amount of time.

You can purchase the activities bundle and give them immediate access to 50+ printable autism activities that they can use in their classroom, therapy practice or online over and over again!

Bookshop.org has a wonderful selection of books from independent bookstores and publishers. Take a peek at the selection if you know a bit about your teacher’s interests or select one of the cute teacher appreciation books below to show your teacher appreciation.

I think a journal is such a thoughtful gift. Your child’s teacher can use it to write down ideas and inspirations throughout the day, to record experiences during a special trip

A bottle of wine

Your child’s teacher may be in need of wine (LOL). Just kidding. Wine can be a nice gift that your little one’s teacher can share with a husband or wife or if the teacher doesn’t drink alcohol, it’s also a gift that can be passed on. Make it even more personal with a funny personalized wine label .

A “spa at home” box

I love this idea! Gather some lovely spa products for your child’s teacher to enjoy a spa day or evening at home. Some ideas? You could buy a beautiful basket and fill it with bubble bath, soap, a face mask, a body scrub, some tea or coffee, nail polish or anything else you think would be a hit!
