Your town, neighborhood or city in Spanish

Describing places is something that we do in every language! Adjectives are the most common type of words we are going to use in descriptions.

Here we have some adjectives that you’ll probably need to describe your neighborhood or hometown!

• Lindo/a = pretty, cute, lovely
• Grande = big
• Pequeño/a = little 
• Moderno/a = modern
• Tradicional = traditional 
• Tranquilo/a = calm
• Aburrido/a = boring
• Antiguo/a = ancient
• Limpio/a = clean
• Sucio/a = dirty 
• Caro/a = expensive
• Barato/a = cheap
• Aislado/a = isolated

In Spanish, we usually use the Present tense or the Imperfect tense for descriptions. The verbs that we are going to use the most are “ser”, “estar”, “haber” (which are often translated as “to be”), “tener” (to have) and “parecer” (to seem). You might think that is a very small amount, but those verbs are enough to make a good description!

Of course, you have to mention the different places in your town or neighborhood. Those will often be:

• El subte = the subway
• El negocio = the store
• El edificio = the building
• La estación de servicio = the gas station
• La farmacia = the pharmacy
• La plaza = the square / the park 
• El cajero = the ATM
• La fábrica = the factory
• El banco = the bank
• La escuela = the school
• La iglesia = the church
• El parquet = the park
• El farol = the streetlight
• La casa = the house
• La mansión = the mansion
• El restaurante = the restaurant
• La biblioteca = the library
• El supermercado = the supermarket
• El centro = downtown 
• El estacionamiento = the parking lot 
• La avenida = the avenue
• La calle = the street
• La autopista = the highway

Say we want to describe a calm tranquil neighborhood in a small town in Spanish. For instance:

Mi barrio es pequeño, tranquilo y bonito. Hay muchas casas con jardines, un parque y una iglesia. Las casas son blancas o de otros colores claros. Mi escuela está frente al parque. 

My neighborhood is small, quiet and nice. There are houses with gardens, a park, and a church. The houses are white or in other light colors. My school is in front of the park. 

Now say we want to describe a modern town in Spanish:

Mi ciudad es grande y diversa. En el centro, hay muchos edificios altos y es ruidoso. Hay teatros, plazas, monumentos y negocios, pero también hay edificios antiguos en la parte vieja de la ciudad.

My hometown is big and diverse. In downtown, there are a lot of tall buildings and it’s noisy. There are theaters, squares, monuments and stores, but you can also find some ancient buildings in the old part of the town. 

 Therefore, if we are describing a small town or a neighborhood, we’ll probably say: “There’s a park” (“Hay un parque”), instead of “there are parks” (“Hay parques”), but we can say “There are some houses” (“Hay casas”). Don’t forget how to use the indefinite articles in Spanish! 

Also, remember that we are going to use “haber” (“hay”, “había”) for indefinite nouns (“una escuela”, “a school”) and “estar” for definite ones (“la escuela”, “the school”). 

• La escuela está frente al parque = The school is in front of the park
• Hay una escuela / Hay varias escuelas en mi barrio = There’s a school / There are several schools in my neighborhood. 

Lastly, do not forget to conjugate the verbs! 

• El parque ES bonito.
• Las casas SON bonitas. 

So now you know how to describe your hometown or neighborhood! You have the vocabulary and some easy grammar tips, but remember to correct your text before handing it in!

Hello, today we are going to learn how to describe our city. When describing a city we are going to use three verbs “ser”, “estar” y “tener”. As you already know, all of them are irregular, let´s have a look:

In Spanish we have two verbs for the English “to be“. Look at the table for some of the differences and examples. In this lesson we will focus on these differences, between “ser”, “estar” and also “tener”.

Describing your home town and local area in spanish.

I then asked my students to produce a short movie like the one above about their local area. All of them did a fantastic job and here are some examples:

We watched all their videos in class and students gave feedback based on the IGCSE criteria for speaking . I was very pleased because they assessed the language and pronunciation accurately. For example, one student noticed that on the first video the student said “ muchos estudiantes ir allí ” instead of “ muchos estudiantes van allí “. Another student also noticed that “ allí ” was not pronounced correctly. Students were practicing they listening skills as well as peer assessing. And I am now planning to have grade 10 watch these videos as a revision tool.

It was a simple idea really! But my students liked to create the video although it was for homework and they enjoyed watching the end products all together in class. I think they were proud of their work and they were glad they could use technology instead of pen and paper!

Nuestra Ciudad: Writing the City in Spanish

Just shy of two years since the city of New York was laid low by the COVID-19 pandemic, the December issue of  Words Without Borders  brings together work from five writers—all of them working in Spanish—that explores this multifaceted city.

That such writing exists should come as a surprise to no one. A long tradition exists of writers from Spain and Latin America who have come and stayed in this city, and documented their experience in the only language they knew—or the one they elected. García Lorca wrote  Poeta en Nueva York , a series of poems that still talk to us today about the views of a gay European man, fascinated by the energy coming from these streets. José Martí wrote a series of nonfiction pieces that, after being published for the most important newspapers across the Americas, helped readers–from Buenos Aires and Caracas to Havana and Mexico City–to understand the magnitude of the American experiment.

What has changed for Spanish-language writing in New York in the time since Martí, and later Lorca, wrote here? Today there is a more or less established route for these writers to present and to publish their work. Until the pandemic hit, in a basement in SoHo, in a  small bookstore in Queens , in a few small gardens in Manhattan, in Brooklyn, in the Bronx, on a  community radio station on Staten Island , poets, writers, essayists–many of them students–met weekly, or daily, to share their work. They organized events, they met and listened to writers who had come to New York from cities big and small across Latin America and Spain. There were several reasons, including the creation of the MFA Program in Creative Writing in Spanish at New York University and a new wave of immigrants and students, enticed by scholarships and more active recruitment efforts from institutions like the Cervantes Institute and the City University of New York. Javier Molea, a librarian and activist, has also played a big role, especially during his time working for McNally Jackson, when he successfully transformed the basement of the bookstore into a hub, a place where many writers, from across the Hispanophone world or else coming from other cities in this country, knew they could come to give readings from their books.

Most of these writers were or are students, and still live on the margins. They may get a salary as part-time adjuncts, or may work for tips (in restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, like anyone else). They share rooms with other students, and from there they write: sometimes about their dreams, sometimes about the choice to stay here. Most of them are still straddling two worlds, a foot in each one.

Today, a young writer working in Spanish arrives in New York City to find no shortage of role models. Since around the beginning of this decade, they can find a series of novels, poems, a more or less constant flows of stories centered on this city, such as those written by such figures as Lina Meruane, María Negroni, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Fernanda Trías, Eduardo Lago, Marta Ana Diz, or Valeria Luiselli. And there are magazines publishing that work like  ViceVersa ,  Los  B árbaros  or  Temporales . In addition, there are local independent publishing houses of various sizes doing the same. Since 2019 there is even an International Book Fair in Spanish, FILNYC, organized by the Mexican Studies Institute and Instituto Cervantes.

Now, there is a feeling of a collective pursuit; a burgeoning group of writers, publishers, and festival curators are working to create something permanent.

There are reasons for this. Glotopolitical reasons, as  José del Valle would say, from his podium as a scholar at The Graduate Center , CUNY . There are writing programs, magnets attracting the best writers from the Spanish-speaking world, like  NYU  and City College CUNY. And technology plays no small role; now there are faster, cheaper, and easier ways to publish—online or by print on demand.

Ultimately, this phenomenon is about people who came to the city and found it to their liking. Immigrants who decided to call this place home, and who happen to be accomplished writers.

Michel Nieva, who recently appeared in  Granta ’s latest issue of Best of Spanish-Language Novelists, hails from Argentina. In the short story “War of the Species,” he follows a Harlem resident who, thrown into unemployment as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, discovers a gruesome competition between two of the city’s most persistent scavengers.

Mario Michelena, who lives in Brooklyn and published  his first novel  in 2015 in Peru, looks at warfare of a different variety. The story featured here— “No One Really Knows Why People Shout” —comes to us from his second book, to be released in English translation by  Chatos Inhumanos , a small New York-based publishing house, in early 2022. Michelena has been an interpreter for boxing fights on HBO, and currently works full time as an interpreter in the Brooklyn courts. Some of his courtroom experiences were the basis for his novel  Las esquinas redondeadas , and they are behind the story published in this issue.

Sara Cordón, an NYU graduate, CUNY PhD candidate, and winner of the very prestigious Cosecha Eñe Prize  in 2017, belongs to a group of writers who answered the call of a New York-based MFA program. She was working for a writing program in Madrid when she got the opportunity to apply to NYU. It was in this city that she wrote her debut novel,  Para español Pulse Dos  (For Spanish, Press Two), a critical success published by Penguin Random House and now being translated into English by Robin Myers. The novel is about becoming a student in New York, about the dreams of writers who arrive here for the first time, about American academia, the illusion of fame, and the farces common to both. The story in this issue, “The Common Good,” is also about being a student, more specifically a young girl from Madrid who always viewed New York through the lens of her favorite film, Walter Hill’s 1979 action thriller  The Warriors . Now, thanks to a sensitive translation by Robin Myers, this story is available to readers in English.

Álvaro Baquero-Pecino is another example of the connection between the world of academia and the world of writers. He is a professor at College of Staten Island, while working on the side on short stories and publishing some of his work in  Los bárbaros , including “Statistics,” a tale of New York City in numbers that resulted from a workshop with Lina Meruane, which appears here.

Our issue closes with a piece by Naief Yehya, a writer who was born in the 1960s but has been living in New York for a very long time. He has always been a huge presence in the writing scene in Mexico, mixing creative writing with essays on technoculture and twenty-first-century pornography. In his story “Plans and Commitments,” translated by Samantha Ortega, a middle-aged Brooklyn man faces an awkward situation after a cam girl calls his bluff.

As biographer, translator, and editor Esther Allen notes in an interview for this month’s issue, the distorted historical record that erases the longstanding presence and contribution of those for whom Spanish is a first language has dangerous repercussions locally and nationally. The contributions to this month’s issue re-stake a longstanding claim to the city of New York and are an effective antidote to monolingual and monolithic portraits of this pulsing metropolis.

Spanish essay example and how to write it.

Today, I will share a  Spanish essay example   in the end of the article and talk about the steps and hacks to help you craft the perfect Spanish essay.

As an experienced writer, I understand how hard it can be to write in a language different from your mother tongue. But, know that learning  how to write a good Spanish essay  has more to do with following a structure than it has to do with understanding the language.

Of course, you need to have a basic understanding of spelling and grammatical practices; as well as a vast vocabulary to avoid sounding monotonous. 

However, learning  how to write a Spanish essay  is not impossible if you follow these simple steps:

• Draft an outline 
• Create a list of words and terms 
• Start writing the body of your essay
• Write the introduction 
• Formulate the conclusion 
• Proofread and edit 

As you can see, learning how to write a good Spanish essay requires a lot of planning and organization. And although it might be counter-intuitive at first, following the structure above will save you a lot of time. Plus, once you have the system down, you will be able to create exciting pieces without breaking a sweat!

Before we dive in, I always recommend you do a little research. So, look up  Spanish essay examples  online and analyze the way the writer structured the piece. Bonus points if you can find useful examples of essays within your topic of choice. The idea is not to copy what others are saying but to understand  how to write a Spanish essay  that is well crafted, appealing, and informative — all at the same time. 

Now that you have done your homework; it is time to start writing your essay by following the steps I mentioned earlier:

1. Draft an outline

An outline is vital when you are learning  how to write a Spanish essay , as it will allow you to organize your arguments and ideas. Plus, given that you are not writing in your first language, an outline will help you translate keywords or phrases from English to Spanish (if need be).

As you can see from the Spanish essay example, I have shared it after the text . You must keep it simple. Nonetheless, make sure you have enough information to elaborate on 6-7 paragraphs. Also, do not forget to include any quotes, statistics, or other information (from credible sources) that could support your arguments.

2. Create a list of words and terms 

I always recommend that before you start writing, you create a list of keywords or phrases that are vital to your essay. More often than not, these terms will appear as part of your outline, but, in other instances, these could be hard-to-translate terms. 

You do not need to write every word or term you will be using throughout the piece as you can always use a English-Spanish dictionary if you cannot recall a specific term.

The list is a way of double-checking. keywords to make sure you are using the correct term in Spanish and not using a literal translation. For instance, in the list of our Spanish essay example, the word “ must-have ” is not translated to “ debes tener ,” as that would be a literal translation. Instead, the phrases “ cualidades indispensables ” is used, which would be the appropriate term in Spanish.  

3. Start writing the body of your essay

The body of the essay is where you fully develop your argument. It might seem odd, but you should ignore your essay’s introduction and go straight to the body . 

If your goal is to master  how to write a good Spanish essay  make sure your body has a good flow in between paragraphs, so they do not end up being separate mini-essays. It is also essential that each body paragraph contains only one main argument or claim. However, this central idea can (and should) be supported by approximately 5 to 6 other sentences.

Spanish essays are usually wordier/more complicated than your average English essay as the language is richer. So, do not be afraid to write longer sentences to get the message across.  

Lastly, do not forget to add relevant examples, evidence to support your arguments, and quotes from experts or credible sources (i.e., academic books and journal articles).   You can see one example of a quote here.

Let’s be honest, most students do not do that, but shows the teacher you have put effort to research your topic.

 Go back to our Spanish essay example and dissect each paragraph. Pay attention to the transitions here and here , the way we incorporated quotes, and how each paragraph’s main idea is developed. In doing so, you will be gaining valuable insight as to how to structure your document. 

4. Write the introduction 

Once you have finished writing your entire essay’s body, write the introduction. Why? Simple. If the job of an introduction is to set the tone for what will follow. You will have a more precise and more detailed idea of what that is once you’ve written the entire piece. 

An introduction should state a problem or introduce a subject of discussion. It should also tell the reader  why  you are writing this essay and why he/she should feel compelled to read it. 

Let’s look at our Spanish essay example. Here, the introduction , although it is short, gives us enough information. It allows us to understand that we will know how to manage a remote team by choosing the right candidates and establishing an effective strategy after reading this essay. And that is precisely what you want an introduction to be doing!  

5. Formulate the conclusion 

When learning  how to write a Spanish essay , you have to be really careful with how you formulate the conclusion. In Spanish, your conclusion should always begin by restating your main argument. In other words, this is your chance to tie all of your main points together and give the reader a succinct takeaway. 

For instance, in our Spanish essay example, the conclusion is everything. Think about it, if you only read the title and this last paragraph, you almost do not need to read the body. All the main points are there, and as a reader, I got what I came looking for: strategies to manage a remote team effectively. 

6. Proofread and edit 

To finish our easy steps on  how to write a Spanish essay,  we must not leave our editing and proofreading! This step is critical to composing a great essay. Most readers will not even finish reading articles if they spot a spelling mistake, typo, or grammatical error. Thus, take the time to go over your essay.

Furthermore, when editing your essay, pay attention to:

• Readability 
• Consistency of the language
• Argument reasoning and rationale
• Transition between paragraphs
• Writing style
• Citations and referencing 

Lastly, given that Spanish is not your first language, I always recommend having someone else proofread your final draft before sending it out or printing it. A native Spanish speaker can easily spot mistakes that you might have missed, which could affect your article’s natural flow.

How to Make your Spanish Essay More Persuasive 

Now that you have finished writing a good Spanish essay, you might want to go the extra mile by making it more persuasive. 

A  Spanish persuasive essay  or any persuasive essays’ goal is to convince the reader to think like you or validate your perspective. But, some topics can be more subjective than others. Thus, to make sure your essay is effective, always rely on others. 

In other words, don’t let your argument stand-alone—research statistics, graphs, information, and data that can back up what you are saying. Citing or quoting experts in the field is also a great way to go about it as it allows your message to carry more weight. 

Nonetheless, make sure you are only using reliable sources. Below a list of ways to vet a reference to make sure your  Spanish persuasive essay  uses only the best sources:

Verify the information you already have against the data found in the source.

• Authority

Make sure a dependable author or institution writes the source.

Depending on your subject, your currency needs will vary. Thus, make sure to check when was the book or article written/published.

As a rule of thumb, I consider a reliable source:

• Materials published within the last five years

• Official websites (.gov., .edu,.org)

• Academic databases

• Articles published by well-known authors or experts in a specific topic

Las horas laborales oficiales, dependerán de los requerimientos de tu proyecto, por lo que es importante que los miembros de tu equipo sepan a qué horario atenerse. En caso de que los miembros de tu equipo tengan distintos husos horarios, define uno oficial con el que todos se sientan cómodos.

Determina los días que necesites una videoconferencia con todo el equipo dentro del huso horario oficial. Estas llamadas les permitirán recordar que trabajan con otras personas aunque por lo general hagan sus tareas aislados. Promueve el uso de la webcam para que todos estén concentrados en la conversación y estén realmente presentes. El verse las caras permite la comprensión del lenguaje corporal y una mejor comunicación.

En conclusión, una estrategia efectiva de trabajo remoto dependerá de la forma en la que buscas y vetas los candidatos en tu empresa. No todo el mundo tiene la capacidad de trabajar desde casa de manera efectiva.

Además , recuerda hacer hincapié en la modalidad de trabajo y plantea una estructura clara donde se establezcan horarios, reuniones y seguimientos para lograr los mejores resultados.

Si logras incoporar todas estas prácticas dentro de tu modelo de negocio, tendrás un equipo remoto efectivo, compenetrado y eficiente. Tres factores de vital importancia para sobrepasar la crisis mundial que nos ha tocado vivir este 2020.

Making Comparisons in Spanish: the City vs the Countryside

¡Hola! Welcome to a new lesson for listening practice. This time, we will compare life in the city with life in the countryside. This lesson includes several examples of comparisons of equality and inequality about things such as traffic, environment, job opportunities and others that we discuss when we are making comparisons in Spanish. More importantly, you will have the chance to practice the vocabulary and grammar with two listening activities and their respective interactive quizzes. Let’s start…

Comparisons of equality and inequality in Spanish

In order to make c omparisons of inequality in Spanish , you must add the words “MÁS” (more) and “MENOS” (less) before adjectives like “inteligente” or “ruidoso”, for example: “ Más inteligente ” and “ Menos ruidoso ”. Besides any of those two words, we must add the particle “QUE” (than) before a second object.  This way, we will often follow the sentence structure below to make comparisons in Spanish:

1st object + SER or another verb + MÁS/MENOS + Adjective + QUE + 2nd object

By using that structure, a comparison like “People are friendlier in the countryside than in the city” could be translated almost literally as “ Las personas son más amistosas en el campo que en la ciudad ”, where the word “amistoso” is the main adjective and must agree in number and gender with the noun “persona”. Regarding comparisons of equality in Spanish , we will use “TAN… COMO” meaning just the same as the structure “AS…. AS” from the English language. Following this structure, we can make comparisons in Spanish such as: “ La vida en el campo es tan entretenida como la vida en la ciudad ” (Life in the countryside is as entertained as life in the city). Here are some illustrated examples showing how you could use any of these structures to compare the countryside and the city or other kinds of things in Spanish:

Sentences comparing life in the city and the countryside in Spanish

Here are some basic sentences related to pros and cons of living in the city as opposed to living in the countryside in Spanish. Some of these examples will give many details to make for advanced comparisons in Spanish, especially things that you might hear in a real conversation about this topic. Notice that the clause “QUE + second object” is optional, so it was left out in some sentences.

Comparing life in the city with life in the countryside in Spanish

In this section, you will be able to read and listen to two comparisons with perspectives on life in the city with life in the countryside in Spanish. These examples, plus the ones above, will serve as the basis for both listening activities in this lesson. Please analyze the first example carefully:

La ciudad es mejor que el campo

La ciudad es mejor que el campo simplemente porque todo está al alcance con más facilidad. No es necesario sembrar o criar animales. Solo tenemos que ir al supermercado y comprar todo lo que necesitamos. Además, hay más oportunidades de trabajo en la ciudad y los salarios son mucho mejores que en el campo. Otro beneficio es el transporte. Hay muchas formas de moverse en la ciudad como trenes, metro, buses, taxis y tu propio auto. Por último, el acceso a la tecnología es mejor en la ciudad y la tecnología es muy importante hoy en día. Por estas razones, prefiero la ciudad al campo.

The city is better than the countryside, simply because everything is within reach more easily. It is not necessary to harvest or raise animals. We just have to go to the supermarket and buy everything we need. In addition, there are more job opportunities in the city and salaries are much better than in the country. Another benefit is transportation. There are many ways to get around the city like trains, subways, buses, taxis and your own car. Finally, access to technology is better in the city and technology is very important nowadays. For these reasons, I prefer the city to the countryside.

In the previous example, the person probably lives in a developed city with good transport and other good conditions. This is not the case for all cities in the world, especially in developing countries. In fact, what we call “countryside” in Latin American countries can be quite different as compared to the countryside in the United States, for instance. The following example includes more comparisons in Spanish, this time focusing on the countryside and a city (or town) in a developing country.

El campo es mejor que la ciudad

Para mí, el campo es mejor que la ciudad. Las ciudades son muy ruidosas y algunas veces son peligrosas. En el campo, la gente es más amigable y siempre hay alguien con quien conversar y pasar un momento agradable. En algunas comunidades rurales, el agua, las carreteras y el acceso a suministros básicos pueden ser un desafío para las personas. En ese sentido, la ciudad es mejor que el campo. Sin embargo, la comida es más barata en el campo porque es donde se produce todo lo que se consume en la ciudad. Además, el aire es limpio y el clima es muy agradable la mayoría del tiempo. A pesar de las dificultades, incluso en los pueblos más pobres hay una especie de optimismo y amabilidad que separa la vida en la ciudad de la vida en el campo.

For me, the country is better than the city. The cities are very noisy and sometimes dangerous. In the countryside, people are more friendly and there is always someone to talk with and have a good time. In some rural communities, water, roads and access to basic supplies can be a challenge for people. In that sense, the city is better than the countryside. However, food is cheaper in the countryside because it is where everything that is consumed in the city is produced. In addition, the air is clean and the weather is very pleasant most of the time. Despite the difficulties, even in the poorest villages there is a kind of optimism and kindness that separates life in the city from life in the countryside.

Listening Activity No. 1: The city vs the country in Spanish

Hola. Me llamo Norman. Actualmente vivo en la ciudad, pero también tengo una finca pequeña en el campo. Yo vivo en la ciudad porque en la ciudad hay más oportunidades de trabajo y la educación es mejor. Me gusta la ciudad porque hay varios lugar para entretenimiento como el teatro, el cine, los centros comerciales, restaurantes y las discotecas.

Rento un apartamento en la ciudad. Las estaciones del metro están muy cerca así que puedo llegar a cualquier lugar de la ciudad fácilmente. En vacaciones, siempre voy a mi casa en el campo. Adoro ese lugar porque es más tranquilo que la ciudad. No hay tantas opciones de entretenimiento y el transporte es peor que en la ciudad, pero tampoco hay tanto ruido y puedo hacer actividades como escalar montañas o simplemente disfrutar del paisaje. Además, siempre como frutas y otros alimentos frescos.

Listening Activity No. 2: Comparing places in Spanish

Key expressions in the conversation:.

• “Ventajas y desventajas…” means “Advantages and disadvantages”
• “Aún así, siento que…” means “Even then, I feel like…”
• “Te aseguro que…” means “I can assure you that…”
• “Todo en su momento” means “All in good time”
• Martín: Hey mira… se puede ver el humo de los autos en el aire. Está todo nublado. Quizás por eso está haciendo calor hoy.
• Paul: Es cierto. ¡Que mal! El aire de la ciudad está muy contaminado. Deberíamos vivir en el campo mejor ¿No crees?
• Martín: Bueno, hay ventajas y desventajas de vivir en la ciudad. Es más fácil ir de un lugar a otro en la ciudad porque hay varios medios de transporte. Los trabajos son mejores que en el campo y podemos mantener contacto con otras personas. Tú sabes que el internet es muy malo en el campo.
• Paul: Si, el internet es peor en el campo en este país. En la ciudad tenemos más acceso a la tecnología y a muchas cosas más. Todo es fácil de conseguir en supermercados, por ejemplo. Eso sí, vivir en la ciudad es más caro que vivir en el campo.
• Martín: Es más caro vivir en la ciudad porque queremos tener todos los servicios que existen y comprar todo lo que vemos.
• Paul: Bueno, yo no compro tantas cosas y aún así siento que gasto demasiado aquí. En el campo todo es más barato y los alimentos son frescos. Te aseguro que se gasta menos en el campo.
• Martín: Seguro que si. El campo es excelente para ir de paseo. No se si yo podría vivir en el campo. Me gusta la idea de respirar aire puro, escalar o caminar en las montañas, cultivar cosas, pero no se… quizás no en este momento.
• Paul: Claro, todo en su momento. Tanto el campo como la ciudad tienen sus cosas buenas y malas. Quizás cuando seamos viejitos podemos vivir en el campo.
• Martín: ¡Buena idea! Algún día…

Writing essays may not seem like fun, but it actually improves your cognitive abilities! The act of researching, organizing, and writing pushes you to increase your knowledge on different topics, strengthens your critical thinking skills, and advances your ability to communicate and express your thoughts.

With all these benefits in mind, it’s no wonder you want to write a great essay in Spanish. But there are times when your ideas vanish and your mind goes blank—you wonder, where do I begin and what steps do I follow? 

Even if you’re a pro when it comes to writing in English, writing an essay in Spanish can be a challenge. In this blog post, I’ll help you overcome this small hurdle to help you make your Spanish essay cohesive, persuasive, and as professional as possible.

Are you ready to write an amazing essay in Spanish?

Basics and Benefits of Writing Essays

Strong writing skills are important for school, college, and a professional career. It’s likely that Spanish is not your first language, but if you’re learning the language then writing a research-fueled Spanish essay gives you all sorts of advantages. It enables you to practice grammar, spelling, vocabulary, as well as synthesize your ideas and thoughts surrounding the topic you’re writing about.

Writing a terrific essay in Spanish requires planning, organization, and structure. Having a process saves you time and once you’ve established a system that works for you, the writing comes easy! 

How to Structure an Essay in Spanish

Similar to when you’re telling a story, your essay should follow a traditional story arc. This means that you start with an appealing introduction, after which you develop your idea within the body of the essay, and finally, you close your thoughts or argument with a summary and conclusion. 

Let’s take a deeper look at these 3 parts of an essay in Spanish:

1. Introduction

Start your essay with a summary of the topic you’ll cover throughout your piece. The introduction reflects the argumentative line that your whole essay follows. It should be brief but not too short. I recommend making the intro 10% of your whole essay. 

A good introduction gives enough information by stating a problem or the reason why you’re writing the essay and why the reader should be compelled to read it. 

Some writers choose to write the introduction after they’ve written the body and conclusion. I think it’s a good strategy that allows you to summarize and evaluate the body of your whole essay before you aim to highlight important points in your introduction. 

My biggest advice is to make it clear what the reason for your essay’s existence is, so that your reader can feel excited to know more, and invited to learn from you. 

This is the main part of your essay. I recommend that you dedicate 80% of your whole essay to the body. This critical section develops the core ideas of your essay in Spanish as it’s where you present the main ideas and their arguments in relation to the topic you’re writing about. 

This part requires you to do research from reputable sources, fact checking, and tying all your ideas together in a cohesive way. 

3. Conclusion

The remaining 10% of your essay in Spanish should focus on bringing the essay to a close. You want to summarize all the main ideas of your topic and establish your final posture on it. 

Preferably, leave no loose ends and make sure the ending of your essay has the ability to create a discussion or invite the reader to find out more about the topic. 

Steps to Follow to Write an Essay in Spanish

Every writer has a unique system that works for them. What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa. 

The steps and path you follow for writing an essay in Spanish depend on the knowledge and fluency you have of the language as well as your familiarity with writing. 

Nevertheless, I recommend some basic steps that will help you if you’re a beginner when it comes to writing an essay in Spanish. 

1. Define a Topic

Choose a topic of interest to you. If the topic is not assigned by your teacher, go for a current issue or interesting topic that will inspire you to research as much as possible. Check the local media, or go online and find out what topics are available for you to discuss.

2. Do Your Research

This aspect is critical—you must find reliable sources of information for your essay. Go to a library if possible, find academic papers online, and gather as much documentation as possible that helps you understand the central themes and patterns of your chosen topic.

As a plus, if you do your research in Spanish, you’ll see other essays in Spanish that will help you develop your own Spanish writing style, tone, and personality.  

3. Determine Your Position

After you’ve gathered enough research, you’ll begin to see an angle or position you can take in relation to the information. The angle or position you take is essentially your “point.” Ask yourself, “What’s my point in writing this?” When you’ve answered that, you’ve discovered your position. 

To support your position, your research should include quotes, statistics, and any relevant information you can find from credible sources. 

4. Draft an Outline

This step is vital for organizing your arguments and ideas. Since Spanish is not your first language, an outline will allow you to translate words or phrases. In addition to listing Spanish notes in your outline, keep this basic process in mind:

• Know your audience
• Gather all notes, research, and supporting materials
• Organize them into a cohesive flow 
• Be sure to organize by how each subtopic relates to the main topic and to each other

5. List Spanish Words and Terms

Since you’re writing an essay in Spanish, it’s only befitting that you have a list of specific words and terms you want to include in it. 

Draft a list of terms that are relevant to your essay in Spanish, whether they’re reminders in your outline or they’re unfamiliar terms that beg to be further researched. 

The terms you choose allow you to set a tone and define whether you’re using standard Spanish, informal Spanish, or literary and formal language. 

The tone you choose to follow in your essay guides your word choice. 

Here’s a list of words and phrases in Spanish that can help with your writing:

6. Write the Body of Your Essay

Focus on fully developing your argument with relevant examples and evidence to support your position. Each paragraph should focus on only one argument along with supporting evidence, and the flow from one paragraph to the next should sound natural and rational. 

Spanish is a richer language, so don’t be afraid of writing longer sentences than usual, but make sure you combine them with short dynamic phrases. It’s essential to keep your reader interested! 

7. Write an Engaging Introduction

Once you’re done with the body of your essay, start writing the introduction. The purpose of your intro is to set a tone and prepare the reader for what follows. 

Putting together your introduction at the end allows you to absorb what you’ve written and define how to present the topic and express your point. 

8. Summarize and Conclude

The conclusion is your essay is an opportunity to tie all your points together and restate the main argument. Since some essays are meant to be objective, I recommend you include a paragraph or sentence that stimulates reflection and enriches the reader’s perspective on the topic. 

9. Final Edits and Proofreading

This final step is the second most critical when it comes to writing an essay in Spanish! Edit for correcting typos, punctuation, grammatical errors, and spelling. 

I recommend you share your Spanish essay with a native speaker who can proofread it before you turn it in. Another person’s perspective can help you spot an error or a section that lacks cohesion. 

A Few Final Tips

Read your essay as many times as possible.

I find myself making changes to essays after reading them at least 4 or 5 times. You need to check your essay for: 

• readability
• consistency
• transitions between paragraphs, 
• unnecessary fillers, and 
• adequate adverbs and adjectives.

Think and write in Spanish, if possible

By drafting an outline, doing your research, and organizing your ideas in Spanish from the beginning, you fully immerse yourself and make writing an essay in Spanish more efficient. 

On the contrary, by writing and researching in English with the goal of translating, you’ll end up in a tough spot with way much more work than intended.

This summer my wish came true as mi familia and I explored castles, beaches, and more across el país. From soccer stars to flamenco dancing, Spain truly brought European adventures to life. Let me tell you about our magical memories.

Our first stop was sunny Barcelona—what a vibrant city! At Camp Nou stadium, seeing Messi play live blew my mind. The Gothic Quarter lets us visualize knights in armor too. Making friends at Las Ramblas reminded me how shared smiles know no borders. We even tried paella—so delicioso! Each memory brings a smile.

Madrid: Royal Palaces of La Corte

In Madrid, the Prado and Reina Sofía museums blew me away with artwork. Seeing Velázquez and Picasso in person surpassed all imagination! At the Royal Palace, the golden halls left me feeling like royalty. In lush parks, locals brought joy through picnic fiestas and soccer. Their zest for life inspires living each day con pasión like in España.

Granada: Castles and Flamenco in La Susona

Our final destination was Granada—what magical scenery and culture! At the Alhambra Palace, Arabic architecture transported me to another world. In bars, flamenco dancers mesmerized with spirited stamping and spinning. Their flow of expressive dance will forever stay in mi corazón. Each sunset brought por favor wishes for regreso another día.

Though saying adiós to España posed tricky tears, this trip awakened my world. Every moment showed hospitality and community thrive when cultures connect.
