"I started watching TV after I have finished my homework" vs "I started watching TV after I finished my homework"
"I started watching TV after I have finished my homework" or "I started watching TV after I finished my homework" ? Is there any difference at all ?
- 2 The first sentence is not correct, at least not without a time machine. "Started watching" happened in the past, and "after I have finished" is in the future. – Andrew Commented Sep 15, 2017 at 15:10
"I started watching TV after I had finished my homework." In this case, you want to use the past participle. It is also common to hear "I started watching TV after I finished my homework." Those are really the only correct ones. Because you are saying that you started watching TV, you wouldn't be able to say "have finished."
If you are talking about your general routine, it would be okay to say, "I start watching TV after I have finished my homework" or "after I finish my homework."

I watched TV before I did my homework.

I know that subordinating conjunctions are those words that connect an independent clause to a dependent one. But if I said: I watched TV before I did my homework. Both clauses are independent; both of them give full meaning. (I watched TV) is independent, (I did my homework) is also (independent), so how come (before) is a subordinating conjunction?

I don't have that mania for giving definitions to simple parts of speech. I am just delving into the English language and these titles come across. Most of the sites and YouTube videos say it's a subordinating conjunction. I am just asking how it is a subordinating conjunction when it doesn't do that function?
I haven't the faintest idea! Don't those sites and videos explain? If they don't, they're probably just repeating some ancient dogma, and you can safely forget them. (To be honest, whether they can explain or not you will still save yourself time by forgetting them. I've been speaking English for over 70 years without knowing the answer to this. I learnt that there were ten parts of speech, and then how to use them . That is a far more interesting and important thing to learn than this "naming of parts". OK, end of rant.)
"I did my homework" is an independent clause, but "before I did my homework" is a subordinate clause. Adding "because" has "subordinated" the clause - made it into a subordinate clause, therefore "because" is a subordinating conjunction. Tea is not sweet. Tea with sugar is sweet. Sugar is a sweetening agent.

"And she went shopping" is not a subordinate clause. By definition: A single clause beginning with a coordinating conjunction is still an independent clause. A single clause beginning with a subordinating conjunction is not an independent clause and thus not a sentence. The coordinating clause acts as a simple connector. The subordinating conjunction adds a meaning which is dependent on the independent clause. And I am happy. You know there's something else said, but "I am happy" still means "I am happy." independently of whatever that other thing is. "... because I am happy." "I am happy" is now a reason for the missing part. It's meaning is dependent on what the other thing is.

Watching TV in the Past: Simple and Continuous
Hi Jonathan, A question about the uses of the simple past and the past continuous: 1. I watched TV an hour ago. vs. I was watching TV an hour ago. 2. I watched TV when/while my mom was vacuuming the floor. vs. I was watching TV when/while my mom was vacuuming the floor. Are these all correct and commonly used sentences? And what is the main difference between the two sentences in each pair? I know that the past simple is used to talk about events, states, or habits at definite times in the past, while the past continuous is used to talk about events and temporary states that were in progress around a certain time in the past. Still curious though. I might miss some points.
All of these are grammatically correct, but not all are likely to be commonly used.
1.A. “I watched TV an hour ago” is strange, although you might hear it colloquially. The reasons it is strange are subtle.
- It refers more to an act or action rather than an activity.
- It refers to a specific, recent point in time.
- It refers to a specific point in time for an activity that requires a span of time, and there are really no social conventions for “watch TV” that tell us whether you mean started, finished, or something else (as there are with, as an example, “to eat”, e.g., “I ate at noon” would usually be understood to mean “I started eating at noon.”)
We can refer to “watch TV” as an act in a similar way we might refer to “eat steak”. The context is important, or making the context clear in this sentence is important, or we need less precision in the time.
For instance, “When did you last eat steak?” “I (last) ate steak last week.”
“When did you last watch TV?” “I (last) watched TV three years ago.”
Or, we can make the time less specific, either by making it less precise and/or by making it farther in the past. For instance,
“I watched TV this morning.” (answering the question, “What did you do this morning?”)
“I watched TV all day Sunday.”
1.B. “I was watching TV an hour ago.”
This is better since it clearly refers to an activity, and when you were doing it. It answers the question “What were you doing an hour ago?”
2. For these we need to make a distinction: using “when” refers to a concurrent time; using “while” refers to a concurrent activity.
The choice to use one or the other will depend on the context or question being answered.
2.A. “I watched TV when/while my mom was vacuuming the floor.”
This one gets tricky because it implies that your activity began and ended when your mother’s activity began and ended. This would suggest some relationship between the two. For instance, you and your mother might be planning to do something together as soon as she finishes vacuuming the floor, and you watched TV (see what I did there?) until that time.
2.B. “I was watching TV when/while my mom was vacuuming the floor.”
This is easier. It just means that these two things happened at the same time, but were not necessarily related.

How to Clear Your Watch History on Netflix, Apple TV+, YouTube, and More
Almost every movie and TV show streaming app you use keeps track of what you're watching. This is for convenience’s sake; by logging your activity, the app can let you pick up where you left off at another time or on another device, you can be notified of new content you might like, and the app can serve up more relevant recommendations.
You just wouldn't get the same quality of experience if this tracking wasn't happening. But there are also a couple of good reasons why you might want to dive into your viewing history and edit it, or wipe it completely.
First, there's the privacy issue. If you share your account with someone else at home, or with the entire family, maybe you don't want them knowing you skipped ahead in a show, or that you enjoy terrible action flicks quite as much as you do.
And second, there's the recommendations served up by your apps. Everything you watch contributes to these recommendations, so removing movies and shows you didn't like—or that your kids binge watched—will keep those recommendations relevant.
On the Netflix website, hover the cursor over your profile picture (top right), then choose Account and Manage Profiles , and click on your profile. Select Viewing Activity to see everything you've watched lately.
Each item in the list has a Hide button on the right. When you tap Hide, that title will no longer affect your recommendations and won't show up on Netflix as having been watched. If you hide one episode of a show, you'll be asked if you want to hide the entire series. There's also a Hide All button at the foot of the list.
You can't access this list in full from inside the Netflix mobile apps, though you can hide titles you've watched recently. Tap My Netflix , then scroll down to the recently watched section. Tap the three dots on any thumbnail to find the Hide From Watch History option.
You can clear all of your Apple TV viewing history in one go. (David Nield)
In the TV app on macOS, open the TV menu and choose Settings : Under the Advanced tab, there's a Clear Play History button. This resets the list of everything you've ever watched, and you can't select individual titles.
What you can do with individual titles is remove them from the Up Next bar on the main screen. Click the three dots next to any thumbnail and you can choose Remove From Up Next and Remove From Recently Watched to hide the evidence that you've seen it. (The show will still be marked as watched if you search for it.)
The same options are shown if you tap the three dots next to a show or movie thumbnail in the TV app for iOS and iPadOS. To clear your viewing history on a mobile device, tap your profile picture (top right), then Clear Play History .
When you're signed into YouTube on the web, you can click History in the left-hand navigation panel to see what you've been watching recently, and click the X next to any video to remove it from your watch history.
From the same screen, you've got options to Clear all watch history and Pause watch history . You can also select Manage all history , which takes you to a full list of everything you've ever seen on YouTube. From here you can search for videos, browse by date, and delete some or all of the videos from your history.
From the mobile apps, tap You and then View all next to the History heading to get to the same options. Tap the three dots next to a video then Remove from watch history to delete individual items, or the three dots up in the top right corner of the screen to manage your watch history in more detail.
Amazon Prime Video
If you're watching Amazon Prime Video on the web, click your account name (top right), then Account & Settings , and then open the Watch History tab to see the movies and television shows you've been watching lately.
Unfortunately, you can't search through this list or delete items in bulk: All you can do is use the Delete Movie From Watch History and Delete Episodes From Watch History links on the right to strike the items from your Prime Video record. If you want to wipe everything, it could take a while.
You can't access your watch history list through the mobile Prime Video app, but you can remove items from the continue watching bar: Press and hold on the thumbnail, then choose Hide This Video .
You have to go through your Amazon Prime Video history title by title. (David Nield)
Disney+ and Hulu
Disney+ has yet to introduce a way to access or edit your viewing history, so it's lagging behind the other streaming services in that regard. However, you can get at this information on Hulu, which is of course owned by Disney.
On the web, hover the cursor over your account name in the top-right corner of the screen, then choose History . You can click the trash can icon next to any title to delete it from the record, or click Remove All Videos to clear the list out completely.
You can't access the full list on mobile, but you can delete recent items: From the Home tab, tap on the three dots next to any thumbnail under the Keep Watching heading, then choose Remove From Watch History on the menu that pops up.

Here’s Why You Hate Watching TV Right Now
By Priyanka Mattoo
Ms. Mattoo is a filmmaker, a former talent agent and the author of the memoir “Bird Milk & Mosquito Bones.”
I try to watch TV, I swear. But every time I sit down to find a new show, I brace myself to run an exhausting digital gantlet. The viewing experience, which used to be relatively straightforward and, dare I say, fun now feels as overwhelming and unpleasant as walking into a dimly lit, warehouse-size dollar store in search of one decent spatula.
This is not something I should admit because I work in television. I started out as an agent and then worked as a producer, and now I’m a screenwriter who sells a pilot every year or so. I love working in television; I just no longer love watching it.
If the goal of streamers once seemed to be prioritizing and supporting great series from a diverse group of interesting creators, that goal seems to have shifted from making better shows to just … making more of them. As viewers, we’re being flattened by a fire hose of programming — and the experience of watching TV feels like a ritual of submission, passively accepting a slush of shows served up by a streaming service’s algorithm.
I’m not the only one who feels this way, apparently. How else to explain the surprising success of Tubi, a free streaming service that’s supported by ads and offers few prestige shows or buzzy hits yet set a new high for average monthly viewers earlier this year, beating out the average numbers for high-profile rivals like Disney+, Peacock and Max?
Tubi isn’t reinventing television; in fact, with its free programming and frequent ad breaks, it’s returning to a successful model. But the executives at Tubi seem to understand that viewers want to feel engaged and invested, not manipulated and pinned down. We want well-curated choices rather than an avalanche of mush.
Scrolling Tubi, my heart warms to find the BBC’s “Pride and Prejudice” and the original “Bewitched”; I save “MasterChef” to watch with the family and flag a new Nicola Coughlan Channel 4 comedy , “Big Mood,” to savor immediately. While Tubi uses algorithms and personalized recommendations, its offerings feel more thoughtfully chosen, a mix of the familiar and the adventurous; as the TV critic Kaiya Shunyata put it , Tubi “feels very much like you’re choosing what you want to watch; it’s not an algorithm choosing it for you.” It’s a potent reminder of what we used to love about watching TV — and how we might rekindle that love affair.

My wife isn't 'just' a stepmom to my son. He sees her as his other mom.
- My wife has been in my son's life since he was 6 years old.
- She has taken on a parental role, stepping in whenever I need extra help.
- Even though she's his stepmom, my son considers her his other mom.
After Vice President Kamala Harris announced she was running for president, one criticism lobbed against her was that she is not a parent because she has never given birth to children. But she is the stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff's two children.
Like Harris, my wife is a stepmother to my son.
I am no longer in a relationship with his father and have been in a new relationship for four years. My wife came into my son's life when he was 6 years old and quickly stepped into a parental role. It was a role she enthusiastically took on.
Although she didn't give birth to my son, my wife is absolutely his second mother.
My son and wife's relationship started friendly
My wife didn't immediately take an authoritative role or force him to treat her like a parent. At first, she was more like a grown-up friend — someone he knew he needed to respect, but someone who would take him on drives to get ice cream or let him pretend to drive her car while I was inside the grocery store.
Related stories
I was worried about parenting with another person all the time. As the primary parent, I wasn't used to dividing parenting duties . My wife was aware of that and always deferred to me as the primary parent.
But the bond between my son and my wife was instant. He had never met someone I was dating before, but he liked her immediately.
My wife has taken on more responsibility as a stepmom
Over the last four years, she's taken on more parental responsibility but never tried to act like she was more of a parent than myself or my son's father. She is a bonus mom, someone there to kiss him goodnight , help him with his homework, and love him unconditionally.
During the pandemic, my wife volunteered to take the lead in helping my son with virtual school so I could focus on work. She created a schedule for him, made him lunch, and ensured he kept up with assignments. When the playgrounds opened, she would take him to play, armed with a backpack full of whatever was needed.
I have gone on several overnight trips , leaving the two of them alone together. My son doesn't even call or text me when I'm gone because he's having so much fun hanging out with my wife. I never have to worry about him; I know my wife will make sure he takes a bath and goes to bed on time.
There are days when I will ask her to tag in and do the bedtime routine because I'm working or want a break, and she does it without question. My son knows that if he needs something, he doesn't have to come to me all the time.
Seeing my wife willingly step into a parental role with my son has strengthened our relationship. I knew I loved her almost immediately after we met, but seeing how my son responded to her made me more secure in my decision.
Sometimes, she still refers to him as mine, and I always remind her that she's his mom, too. We do everything as a team: school meetings, performances, birthday parties . Everyone knows us as his two moms, and there's no one else I could imagine doing this with.
My son now sees my wife as the missing piece to our family puzzle. He proudly claims her as his other mom.
"You're my mom too," my son will say when my wife calls herself his stepmom. He made that decision. My wife never wanted to force a close relationship on him, but he pushed for it.
Media has warped the perception of stepmoms
Popular media depictions of stepmoms are largely negative. The common trope is that they're evil.
For example, you have characters like Meredith Blake in the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap," the Baroness von Schraeder in " The Sound of Music ," and, of course, the prototype: Cinderella's Evil Stepmother.
These women are always seen as temptresses who come in and seduce the father into marrying them before revealing they intend to get rid of his daughter so that she will be the only woman in his life.
Maybe there are stepmoms out there who fit this description, but by and large, stepmoms are there to be whoever their step kids want them to be.
I know that's exactly the role my wife plays, and my son and I are all the more lucky for it.

"I started watching TV after I had finished my homework." In this case, you want to use the past participle. It is also common to hear "I started watching TV after I finished my homework." Those are really the only correct ones. Because you are saying that you started watching TV, you wouldn't be able to say "have finished."
Aug 28, 2021. #6. Myridon said: "I did my homework" is an independent clause, but "before I did my homework" is a subordinate clause. Adding "because" has "subordinated" the clause - made it into a subordinate clause, therefore "because" is a subordinating conjunction. Tea is not sweet. Tea with sugar is sweet.
When After I did my homework, I listened to music. — 1) we need "after" as "when" would indicate the actions are simultaneous; 2) the simple aspect is sufficient (although I believe the perfect aspect "After I'd done my homework, ..." is also possible here, meaning the same thing). I don't know why, to be honest, but English is just the way ...
I've lost my keys. We've been to a very nice restaurant. We use the past simple (NOT present perfect) when we mention or ask about when something happened or when the time is known by the speaker and the listener. We often use a past expression ( last week, yesterday, when I was a child, etc .) We've arrived yesterday.
Or, we can make the time less specific, either by making it less precise and/or by making it farther in the past. For instance, "I watched TV this morning." (answering the question, "What did you do this morning?") "I watched TV all day Sunday.". 1.B. "I was watching TV an hour ago.". This is better since it clearly refers to an ...
