An article review is both a summary and an evaluation of another writer's article. Teachers often assign article reviews to introduce students to the work of experts in the field. Experts also are often asked to review the work of other professionals. Understanding the main points and arguments of the article is essential for an accurate summation. Logical evaluation of the article's main theme, supporting arguments, and implications for further research is an important element of a review . Here are a few guidelines for writing an article review.

Education specialist Alexander Peterman recommends: "In the case of a review, your objective should be to reflect on the effectiveness of what has already been written, rather than writing to inform your audience about a subject."

  • Read the article very closely, and then take time to reflect on your evaluation. Consider whether the article effectively achieves what it set out to.
  • Write out a full article review by completing your intro, summary, evaluation, and conclusion. Don't forget to add a title, too!

Preparing to Write Your Review

Step 1 Understand what an article review is.

  • Article reviews present more than just an opinion. You will engage with the text to create a response to the scholarly writer's ideas. You will respond to and use ideas, theories, and research from your studies. Your critique of the article will be based on proof and your own thoughtful reasoning.
  • An article review only responds to the author's research. It typically does not provide any new research. However, if you are correcting misleading or otherwise incorrect points, some new data may be presented.
  • An article review both summarizes and evaluates the article.

Step 2 Think about the organization of the review article.

  • Summarize the article. Focus on the important points, claims, and information.
  • Discuss the positive aspects of the article. Think about what the author does well, good points she makes, and insightful observations.
  • Identify contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the text. Determine if there is enough data or research included to support the author's claims. Find any unanswered questions left in the article.

Step 3 Preview the article.

  • Make note of words or issues you don't understand and questions you have.
  • Look up terms or concepts you are unfamiliar with, so you can fully understand the article. Read about concepts in-depth to make sure you understand their full context.

Step 4 Read the article closely.

  • Pay careful attention to the meaning of the article. Make sure you fully understand the article. The only way to write a good article review is to understand the article.

Step 5 Put the article into your words.

  • With either method, make an outline of the main points made in the article and the supporting research or arguments. It is strictly a restatement of the main points of the article and does not include your opinions.
  • After putting the article in your own words, decide which parts of the article you want to discuss in your review. You can focus on the theoretical approach, the content, the presentation or interpretation of evidence, or the style. You will always discuss the main issues of the article, but you can sometimes also focus on certain aspects. This comes in handy if you want to focus the review towards the content of a course.
  • Review the summary outline to eliminate unnecessary items. Erase or cross out the less important arguments or supplemental information. Your revised summary can serve as the basis for the summary you provide at the beginning of your review.

Step 6 Write an outline of your evaluation.

  • What does the article set out to do?
  • What is the theoretical framework or assumptions?
  • Are the central concepts clearly defined?
  • How adequate is the evidence?
  • How does the article fit into the literature and field?
  • Does it advance the knowledge of the subject?
  • How clear is the author's writing? Don't: include superficial opinions or your personal reaction. Do: pay attention to your biases, so you can overcome them.

Writing the Article Review

Step 3 Identify the article.

  • For example: The article, "Condom use will increase the spread of AIDS," was written by Anthony Zimmerman, a Catholic priest.

Step 4 Write the introduction....

  • Your introduction should only be 10-25% of your review.
  • End the introduction with your thesis. Your thesis should address the above issues. For example: Although the author has some good points, his article is biased and contains some misinterpretation of data from others’ analysis of the effectiveness of the condom.

Step 5 Summarize the article.

  • Use direct quotes from the author sparingly.
  • Review the summary you have written. Read over your summary many times to ensure that your words are an accurate description of the author's article.

Step 6 Write your critique.

  • Support your critique with evidence from the article or other texts.
  • The summary portion is very important for your critique. You must make the author's argument clear in the summary section for your evaluation to make sense.
  • Remember, this is not where you say if you liked the article or not. You are assessing the significance and relevance of the article.
  • Use a topic sentence and supportive arguments for each opinion. For example, you might address a particular strength in the first sentence of the opinion section, followed by several sentences elaborating on the significance of the point.

Step 7 Conclude the article review.

  • This should only be about 10% of your overall essay.
  • For example: This critical review has evaluated the article "Condom use will increase the spread of AIDS" by Anthony Zimmerman. The arguments in the article show the presence of bias, prejudice, argumentative writing without supporting details, and misinformation. These points weaken the author’s arguments and reduce his credibility.

Step 8 Proofread.

  • Make sure you have identified and discussed the 3-4 key issues in the article.

Read the Article

As with any reviews, reports, and critiques, you must first familiarize yourself with the assigned material. It’s impossible to review something you haven’t read, so set some time for close, careful reading of the article to identify:

  • Its topic.  
  • Its type.  
  • The author’s main points and message. 
  • The arguments they use to prove their points. 
  • The methodology they use to approach the subject. 

In terms of research type , your article will usually belong to one of three types explained below. 

Summarize the Article

Now that you’ve read the text and have a general impression of the content, it’s time to summarize it for your readers. Look into the article’s text closely to determine:

  • The thesis statement , or general message of the author.  
  • Research question, purpose, and context of research.  
  • Supporting points for the author’s assumptions and claims.  
  • Major findings and supporting evidence.  

As you study the article thoroughly, make notes on the margins or write these elements out on a sheet of paper. You can also apply a different technique: read the text section by section and formulate its gist in one phrase or sentence. Once you’re done, you’ll have a summary skeleton in front of you.

Write the Text

After completing the critical review stage, it’s time to compose your article review.

The format of this assignment is standard – you will have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction should present your article and summarize its content. The body will contain a structured review according to all four dimensions covered in the previous section. The concluding part will typically recap all the main points you’ve identified during your assessment.  

It is essential to note that an article review is, first of all, an academic assignment. Therefore, it should follow all rules and conventions of academic composition, such as:

  • No contractions . Don’t use short forms, such as “don’t,” “can’t,” “I’ll,” etc. in academic writing. You need to spell out all those words.  
  • Formal language and style . Avoid conversational phrasing and words that you would naturally use in blog posts or informal communication. For example, don’t use words like “pretty,” “kind of,” and “like.”  
  • Third-person narrative . Academic reviews should be written from the third-person point of view, avoiding statements like “I think,” “in my opinion,” and so on.  
  • No conversational forms . You shouldn’t turn to your readers directly in the text by addressing them with the pronoun “you.” It’s vital to keep the narrative neutral and impersonal.  
  • Proper abbreviation use . Consult the list of correct abbreviations , like “e.g.” or “i.e.,” for use in your academic writing. If you use informal abbreviations like “FYA” or “f.i.,” your professor will reduce the grade.  
  • Complete sentences . Make sure your sentences contain the subject and the predicate; avoid shortened or sketch-form phrases suitable for a draft only.  
  • No conjunctions at the beginning of a sentence . Remember the FANBOYS rule – don’t start a sentence with words like “and” or “but.” They often seem the right way to build a coherent narrative, but academic writing rules disfavor such usage.  
  • No abbreviations or figures at the beginning of a sentence . Never start a sentence with a number — spell it out if you need to use it anyway. Besides, sentences should never begin with abbreviations like “e.g.”  

Finally, a vital rule for an article review is properly formatting the citations. We’ll discuss the correct use of citation styles in the following section.

When composing an article review, keep these points in mind:

  • Start with a full reference to the reviewed article so the reader can locate it quickly.  
  • Ensure correct formatting of in-text references.  
  • Provide a complete list of used external sources on the last page of the review – your bibliographical entries .

When you need to compose an article review in the APA format , here is the general bibliographical entry format you should use for journal articles on your reference page:  

  • Author’s last name, First initial. Middle initial. (Year of Publication). Name of the article. Name of the Journal, volume (number), pp. #-#. https://doi.org/xx.xxx/yyyy

Your in-text citations should follow the author-date format like this:

  • If you paraphrase the source and mention the author in the text: According to Horigian et al. (2021), young adults experienced increased levels of loneliness, depression, and anxiety during the pandemic. 
  • If you paraphrase the source and don’t mention the author in the text: Young adults experienced increased levels of loneliness, depression, and anxiety during the pandemic (Horigian et al., 2021). 
  • If you quote the source: As Horigian et al. (2021) point out, there were “elevated levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety, alcohol use, and drug use among young adults during COVID-19” (p. 6). 

Note that your in-text citations should include “et al.,” as in the examples above, if your article has 3 or more authors. If you have one or two authors, your in-text citations would look like this:

  • One author: “According to Smith (2020), depression is…” or “Depression is … (Smith, 2020).”
  • Two authors: “According to Smith and Brown (2020), anxiety means…” or “Anxiety means (Smith & Brown, 2020).”

Finally, in case you have to review a book or a website article, here are the general formats for citing these source types on your APA reference list.

Article Review in MLA

If your assignment requires MLA-format referencing, here’s the general format you should use for citing journal articles on your Works Cited page: 

  • Author’s last name, First name. “Title of an Article.” Title of the Journal , vol. #, no. #, year, pp. #-#.

In-text citations in the MLA format follow the author-page citation format and look like this:

  • Young adults experienced increased levels of loneliness, depression, and anxiety during the pandemic (Horigian et al. 6).

Like in APA, the abbreviation “et al.” is only needed in MLA if your article has 3 or more authors.

Step 1: Write the Title

First of all, you need to write a title that reflects the main focus of your work. Respectively, the title can be either interrogative, descriptive, or declarative.

Step 2: Cite the Article

Next, create a proper citation for the reviewed article and input it following the title. At this step, the most important thing to keep in mind is the style of citation specified by your instructor in the requirements for the paper. For example, an article citation in the MLA style should look as follows:

6 tips for writing a great title for your research article

Title is the first thing the reader sees from your research article. Based on the title the reader decides to have a look at the article — or not. So a better title will attract more readers and quite possibly increase the impact of your research. If you wonder what makes a good title, and how you can formulate one for your paper as well, then check out our six tips for writing a great research article title.

Goal: catch the attention of the *right* reader

A good title helps the reader quickly recognize whether this paper is relevant for them. The title should give the reader an accurate picture of the article — and motivate the *right* reader to go on and read the article.

Additionally, an ideal title is memorable : researchers are reading many papers, some will be inevitably forgotten. A good title ensures that your paper will stick in your reader’s mind.

Case study: Important paper missed because of its title

Let me tell you an example from my own research, about an important paper that we missed because of its title.

Article entitled Distinct contributions of Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 in action potential initiation and backpropagation has been published in July 2009 in the prestigious journal Nature Neuroscience .

A couple of months later I started to work on a project that later became my PhD thesis. And the above mentioned article turned out to be the most important study on which my whole work was based.

Yet when I started, I didn’t know about the paper. My supervisor and another professor working on similar topics didn’t know about it either.

They had surely seen the title since they were following the journal’s publications. But they didn’t recognize that this might be a relevant paper.

Eventually we learned about the paper from a collaborator from a different institute. Later when I was presenting my work at conferences, I encountered many other researchers who missed this paper, even though it was clearly relevant to them.

So, what’s the issue with this title? Read on my tips on how to write a great title , and learn along the way what is problematic with this title and how we can fix it.

1. Headline the main result, not the main effort

If your paper has a clear main finding that can be summarized in a sentence , put it in the title. Such a title is much more interesting (and informative) than a title describing your approach.

Prof. Kevin Plaxco gives the following examples in his commentary article The art of writing science :

  • Main effort (not optimal): A phylogenetic analysis of humans and chimps
  • Main result (preferred): Phylogenetic evidence indicates an exceptionally close relationship between humans and chimps

Here is another example:

  • Main result missing: Cognitive-behavioural stress management skills and quality of life in stress-related disorders
  • Main result in the title: Cognitive-behavioural stress management skills improve quality of life in stress-related disorders

Concerning our case study example, the title Distinct contributions of Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 in action potential initiation and backpropagation does (kind of) contain the main result, albeit it is not formulated as a full sentence. We’ll see later how we can improve it.

2. Adapt the level of detail to your target audience

If your article is intended for a broader audience (that is, you want to publish it in a general journal), your title should be more general , so that it is understandable to this broader audience.

On the other hand, if your article is intended for a specialized audience and a specialized journal, you can include more details and jargon in the title.

  • article published in the broad journal Nature: The hippocampus is crucial for forming non-hippocampal long-term memory during sleep
  • article on a similar topic published in the specialized journal Neurobiology of Learning and Memory: Sleep enhances memory consolidation in the hippocampus-dependent object-place recognition task in rats

However, be careful with short and general titles . Such titles are typical for review articles , because they suggest a broad scope of the article. So your readers might mistaken your original research article for a review article.

For example, the title Axon Initial Segment–Associated Microglia sounds like it’s a review, but it is an original research article. Such a title is misleading for the readers, so it’s better to avoid it.

Not every neuroscientist knows what is “Na V 1.6″ and “Na V 1.2″. My supervisor didn’t know either — and it turns out that this was one of the reasons why he and the other professor missed this article. “Na V 1.6″ and “Na V 1.2″ are sodium channels — and every neuroscientist knows what are those. So the keyword “sodium channels” should definitely be included in an article title published in such a general journal as Nature Neuroscience .

3. Avoid “fluff” at the beginning of the title

Beginning of the title is especially salient , especially visible to the reader. And often this is your only chance to convince your potential reader that this paper is relevant to them.

So it’s a mistake to start the title with “fluff”, that is, a phrase that doesn’t carry much content and can be safely omitted. Instead, begin your title with an important keyword .

For example:

  • Aspects of ​immune dysfunction in end-stage renal disease
  • Revisiting the role of xanthophylls in nonphotochemical quenching

Our case-study title Distinct contributions of Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 in action potential initiation and backpropagation does not start with a meaningless phrase that can be simply deleted. However, it also doesn’t start with an important keyword. Let’s see in the next point what would be a better beginning of the title.

4. Use the Context – Emphasis structure

A great title follows the optimal sentence structure : The beginning of the title acts as context for the rest of the title while the end of the title is naturally emphasized (if the reader gets this far).

So a good strategy is to include at the beginning of the title a keyword that will be recognized by all of your target readers and at the end of the title a keyword that is specific to your paper and its contribution.

However, what is a general keyword and what is a specific contribution might depend on your audience .

For example, the title Selective Adsorption to Particular Crystal Faces of ZnO suggests that this article primarily targets researchers interested in adsorption processes: “selective adsorption” is the general process, which is examined in this paper for the particular case of ZnO. However, if the paper targets researchers working on ZnO (zinc oxide), then it would be better to mention “ZnO” at beginning of the title.

Now let’s consider our case study : Distinct contributions of Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 in action potential initiation and backpropagation .

Then, what is a specific keyword related to the contribution of this paper? I would say it could be “Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 sodium channels”: although there are some previous studies investigating these two channel types, this paper put all the puzzle pieces together and provided a coherent picture about the interplay of these two channel types in — you guessed it — action potential initiation and backpropagation.

So, let’s improve this title by putting “Action potential initiation and backpropagation” at the beginning and “Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 sodium channels” at the end. Then we can rearrange the rest such that it makes sense — and reveals the main message of the paper:

Action potential initiation and backpropagation is differentially regulated by Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 sodium channels

A much better title, don’t you think?

5. “Context: Details” structure also works

But what to do with papers that have no single take-home message that can be summarized in a sentence?

For explorative papers that cover several problems or aspects of a topic, the “Context: Details” structure is often suitable. Here, you start with the general contextual keyword(s) that grab the attention of the reader, and then supplement relevant details after the colon.

  • UCB revisited: Improved regret bounds for the stochastic multi-armed bandit problem
  • Single Cell Assay for Molecular Diagnostics and Medicine: Monitoring Intracellular Concentrations of Macromolecules by Two-photon Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging

Here are some examples that don’t work very well:

  • Noise statistics identification for Kalman filtering of the electron radiation belt observations: 2. Filtration and smoothing
  • A better oscillation detection method robustly extracts EEG rhythms across brain state changes: The human alpha rhythm as a test case

In these cases, the first part before the colon is too long, it provides much more information than just the context, and therefore the whole title becomes harder to understand and remember.

So for an effective “Context: Details” type of title, make sure that the first part before the colon is short and memorable . Then the second part after the colon can be longer and detailed, and the title will still create a clear image in reader’s mind.

6. Title as a question or catchy title? It depends…

Now you might ask yourself: can’t we write more interesting titles than those that accurately reflect the content of the paper? These can be pretty boring… What about titles formulated as questions? And “catchy” titles?

Well, the general rule is to follow the conventions of your field . If some of the research articles you are reading have catchy titles, then it’s most probably OK for you to do this as well.

For example, questions and catchy titles are quite common in research articles from psychology:

  • How often is p rep close to the true replication probability?
  • Must interesting things be pleasant? A test of competing appraisal structures.

On the other hand, I have rarely seen a question as a title in a research article from neuroscience.

However, in most fields catchy and even funny titles are appreciated in commentary and opinion articles . For example, the “news & views” commentary article introducing our case-study paper Distinct contributions of Na V 1.6 and Na V 1.2 in action potential initiation and backpropagation is entitled Who let the spikes out?

Also the titles of review articles might be less formal. Which brings us to the next point…

Titles of review articles

Titles of review articles tend to be more general and broad than titles of original research articles. This, of course, reflects the broader scope and content of review articles. For example:

  • Carbohydrate inhibitors of cholera toxin
  • Neural circuits underlying thirst and fluid homeostasis

These titles don’t consist of a full sentence — because there is rarely a main take-home message in a review article. However, what is helpful here is to follow the Context-Emphasis structure introduced in point 4.

Titles of review articles often include the word “review” in the title, for example:

  • Gap junctions in developing neocortex: a review
  • A systematic review of COVID-19 epidemiology based on current evidence

And as we said in the previous point, titles of review articles may be less formal and more catchy even in fields where such titles are not used for original research articles:

  • Spooky sodium balance
  • Remembering the past to imagine the future: the prospective brain

How to find the perfect title for your article

Now you have learned all the rules for good titles, but one question remains: How to proceed? How to come up with a great title for your article?

Then I recommend the following procedure :

  • First, generate 10 possible titles . These 10 titles don’t have to be unique: some of them might only differ in one or two words or in the word order.
  • Next, select the best title . You can do this together with your co-authors. Or each co-author picks one or two favorites and then you discuss and select the final title together.

With this procedure it’s much easier to find the most suitable title for your paper than if you would create just one title and then try to improve it.

Step 2: Article Citation

You need to properly cite the reviewed article. The most important thing is to make sure you are citing it in either APA or MLA format, whichever one is required by your teacher. 

Step 3: Brief Article Description

After citing the article, start your first paragraph by stating the title of the article, the author, the name of the journal, and the year of publication. 

Step 4: Introduction

Once you’ve identified the article, give a brief description of the main points of the article. Carefully analyze the article to identify and highlight the author’s thesis. Understanding the thesis of the main article is crucial to writing a good review, so make sure you include any sub thesis. End the introduction with your own thesis, this could include accepting and expanding on the original author’s main points, or proposing reasons why the author’s conclusions were flawed. 

Step 5: Article Summary

The first body paragraph should summarize the main points of the original article including the author’s arguments and takeaways. Don’t hold yourself to just 3 body paragraphs unless specifically told so by your teacher. Explore a different main point in each paragraph and explain the author’s perspective on the issues. Make sure you review the summary paragraphs so that they accurately reflect the content of the original article and the views of the author.

Step 6: Analysis 

Start with a general assessment of the clarity and usefulness of the article. Analyze each point of your summary and express your opinions on what the author did well or badly. Critiquing the article is the most important element of an article review, so devote a majority of your time and effort to this section. Analyze the main points of the article and determine if the author did a good job of backing their claims with logic and fact. Finally decide if you agree with the author’s conclusions and provide supporting evidence to substantiate your claims.  

Step 7: Conclusion 

Summarize the main points and lessons of the original article and then state your main critiques of the article. Specify why you believe the author made specific mistakes, and how the key takeaways should be different. If possible pose a question about further research or analysis on the topic. 

The Post-Writing Process: Revision 

Finishing your first draft isn’t the end of the process! If you spent enough time during the prewriting stage and made a good outline you will have to spend much less time during revision.

  • Make sure each paragraph only talks about one main point
  • Get rid of unnecessary information

  • Check the punctuation
  • Check for typos
  • Check your citations

How to Review a Journal Article

For many kinds of assignments, like a  literature review , you may be asked to offer a critique or review of a journal article. This is an opportunity for you as a scholar to offer your  qualified opinion  and  evaluation  of how another scholar has composed their article, argument, and research. That means you will be expected to go beyond a simple  summary  of the article and evaluate it on a deeper level. As a college student, this might sound intimidating. However, as you engage with the research process, you are becoming immersed in a particular topic, and your insights about the way that topic is presented are valuable and can contribute to the overall conversation surrounding your topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!

Some disciplines, like Criminal Justice, may only want you to summarize the article without including your opinion or evaluation. If your assignment is to summarize the article only, please see our literature review handout.

Before getting started on the critique, it is important to review the article thoroughly and critically. To do this, we recommend take notes,  annotating , and reading the article several times before critiquing. As you read, be sure to note important items like the thesis, purpose, research questions, hypotheses, methods, evidence, key findings, major conclusions, tone, and publication information. Depending on your writing context, some of these items may not be applicable.

Questions to Consider

To evaluate a source, consider some of the following questions. They are broken down into different categories, but answering these questions will help you consider what areas to examine. With each category, we recommend identifying the strengths and weaknesses in each since that is a critical part of evaluation.

Evaluating Purpose and Argument

  • How well is the purpose made clear in the introduction through background/context and thesis?
  • How well does the abstract represent and summarize the article’s major points and argument?
  • How well does the objective of the experiment or of the observation fill a need for the field?
  • How well is the argument/purpose articulated and discussed throughout the body of the text?
  • How well does the discussion maintain cohesion?

Evaluating the Presentation/Organization of Information

  • How appropriate and clear is the title of the article?
  • Where could the author have benefited from expanding, condensing, or omitting ideas?
  • How clear are the author’s statements? Challenge ambiguous statements.
  • What underlying assumptions does the author have, and how does this affect the credibility or clarity of their article?
  • How objective is the author in his or her discussion of the topic?
  • How well does the organization fit the article’s purpose and articulate key goals?

Evaluating Methods

  • How appropriate are the study design and methods for the purposes of the study?
  • How detailed are the methods being described? Is the author leaving out important steps or considerations?
  • Have the procedures been presented in enough detail to enable the reader to duplicate them?

Evaluating Data

  • Scan and spot-check calculations. Are the statistical methods appropriate?
  • Do you find any content repeated or duplicated?
  • How many errors of fact and interpretation does the author include? (You can check on this by looking up the references the author cites).
  • What pertinent literature has the author cited, and have they used this literature appropriately?

Following, we have an example of a summary and an evaluation of a research article. Note that in most literature review contexts, the summary and evaluation would be much shorter. This extended example shows the different ways a student can critique and write about an article.

Chik, A. (2012). Digital gameplay for autonomous foreign language learning: Gamers’ and language teachers’ perspectives. In H. Reinders (ed.),  Digital games in language learning and teaching  (pp. 95-114). Eastbourne, UK: Palgrave Macmillan.

Be sure to include the full citation either in a reference page or near your evaluation if writing an  annotated bibliography .

In Chik’s article “Digital Gameplay for Autonomous Foreign Language Learning: Gamers’ and Teachers’ Perspectives”, she explores the ways in which “digital gamers manage gaming and gaming-related activities to assume autonomy in their foreign language learning,” (96) which is presented in contrast to how teachers view the “pedagogical potential” of gaming. The research was described as an “umbrella project” consisting of two parts. The first part examined 34 language teachers’ perspectives who had limited experience with gaming (only five stated they played games regularly) (99). Their data was recorded through a survey, class discussion, and a seven-day gaming trial done by six teachers who recorded their reflections through personal blog posts. The second part explored undergraduate gaming habits of ten Hong Kong students who were regular gamers. Their habits were recorded through language learning histories, videotaped gaming sessions, blog entries of gaming practices, group discussion sessions, stimulated recall sessions on gaming videos, interviews with other gamers, and posts from online discussion forums. The research shows that while students recognize the educational potential of games and have seen benefits of it in their lives, the instructors overall do not see the positive impacts of gaming on foreign language learning.

The summary includes the article’s purpose, methods, results, discussion, and citations when necessary.

This article did a good job representing the undergraduate gamers’ voices through extended quotes and stories. Particularly for the data collection of the undergraduate gamers, there were many opportunities for an in-depth examination of their gaming practices and histories. However, the representation of the teachers in this study was very uneven when compared to the students. Not only were teachers labeled as numbers while the students picked out their own pseudonyms, but also when viewing the data collection, the undergraduate students were more closely examined in comparison to the teachers in the study. While the students have fifteen extended quotes describing their experiences in their research section, the teachers only have two of these instances in their section, which shows just how imbalanced the study is when presenting instructor voices.

Some research methods, like the recorded gaming sessions, were only used with students whereas teachers were only asked to blog about their gaming experiences. This creates a richer narrative for the students while also failing to give instructors the chance to have more nuanced perspectives. This lack of nuance also stems from the emphasis of the non-gamer teachers over the gamer teachers. The non-gamer teachers’ perspectives provide a stark contrast to the undergraduate gamer experiences and fits neatly with the narrative of teachers not valuing gaming as an educational tool. However, the study mentioned five teachers that were regular gamers whose perspectives are left to a short section at the end of the presentation of the teachers’ results. This was an opportunity to give the teacher group a more complex story, and the opportunity was entirely missed.

Additionally, the context of this study was not entirely clear. The instructors were recruited through a master’s level course, but the content of the course and the institution’s background is not discussed. Understanding this context helps us understand the course’s purpose(s) and how those purposes may have influenced the ways in which these teachers interpreted and saw games. It was also unclear how Chik was connected to this masters’ class and to the students. Why these particular teachers and students were recruited was not explicitly defined and also has the potential to skew results in a particular direction.

Overall, I was inclined to agree with the idea that students can benefit from language acquisition through gaming while instructors may not see the instructional value, but I believe the way the research was conducted and portrayed in this article made it very difficult to support Chik’s specific findings.

Some professors like you to begin an evaluation with something positive but isn’t always necessary.

The evaluation is clearly organized and uses transitional phrases when moving to a new topic.

This evaluation includes a summative statement that gives the overall impression of the article at the end, but this can also be placed at the beginning of the evaluation.

This evaluation mainly discusses the representation of data and methods. However, other areas, like organization, are open to critique.

Getting the title right can be more difficult than it seems, and researchers refine their writing skills throughout their career. Some journals even help editors to re-write their titles during the publication process!

  • Keep it concise and informative What’s appropriate for titles varies greatly across disciplines. Take a look at some articles published in your field, and check the journal guidelines for character limits. Aim for fewer than 12 words, and check for journal specific word limits.
  • Write for your audience Consider who your primary audience is: are they specialists in your specific field, are they cross-disciplinary, are they non-specialists?
  • Entice the reader Find a way to pique your readers’ interest, give them enough information to keep them reading.
  • Incorporate important keywords Consider what about your article will be most interesting to your audience: Most readers come to an article from a search engine, so take some time and include the important ones in your title!
  • Write in sentence case In scientific writing, titles are given in sentence case. Capitalize only the first word of the text, proper nouns, and genus names. See our examples below.

Don’t

  • Write your title as a question In most cases, you shouldn’t need to frame your title as a question. You have the answers, you know what you found. Writing your title as a question might draw your readers in, but it’s more likely to put them off.
  • Sensationalize your research Be honest with yourself about what you truly discovered. A sensationalized or dramatic title might make a few extra people read a bit further into your article, but you don’t want them disappointed when they get to the results.

How to write a review article?

In the medical sciences, the importance of review articles is rising. When clinicians want to update their knowledge and generate guidelines about a topic, they frequently use reviews as a starting point. The value of a review is associated with what has been done, what has been found and how these findings are presented. Before asking ‘how,’ the question of ‘why’ is more important when starting to write a review. The main and fundamental purpose of writing a review is to create a readable synthesis of the best resources available in the literature for an important research question or a current area of research. Although the idea of writing a review is attractive, it is important to spend time identifying the important questions. Good review methods are critical because they provide an unbiased point of view for the reader regarding the current literature. There is a consensus that a review should be written in a systematic fashion, a notion that is usually followed. In a systematic review with a focused question, the research methods must be clearly described. A ‘methodological filter’ is the best method for identifying the best working style for a research question, and this method reduces the workload when surveying the literature. An essential part of the review process is differentiating good research from bad and leaning on the results of the better studies. The ideal way to synthesize studies is to perform a meta-analysis. In conclusion, when writing a review, it is best to clearly focus on fixed ideas, to use a procedural and critical approach to the literature and to express your findings in an attractive way.

The importance of review articles in health sciences is increasing day by day. Clinicians frequently benefit from review articles to update their knowledge in their field of specialization, and use these articles as a starting point for formulating guidelines. [ 1 , 2 ] The institutions which provide financial support for further investigations resort to these reviews to reveal the need for these researches. [ 3 ] As is the case with all other researches, the value of a review article is related to what is achieved, what is found, and the way of communicating this information. A few studies have evaluated the quality of review articles. Murlow evaluated 50 review articles published in 1985, and 1986, and revealed that none of them had complied with clear-cut scientific criteria. [ 4 ] In 1996 an international group that analyzed articles, demonstrated the aspects of review articles, and meta-analyses that had not complied with scientific criteria, and elaborated QUOROM (QUality Of Reporting Of Meta-analyses) statement which focused on meta-analyses of randomized controlled studies. [ 5 ] Later on this guideline was updated, and named as PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). [ 6 ]

Review articles are divided into 2 categories as narrative, and systematic reviews. Narrative reviews are written in an easily readable format, and allow consideration of the subject matter within a large spectrum. However in a systematic review, a very detailed, and comprehensive literature surveying is performed on the selected topic. [ 7 , 8 ] Since it is a result of a more detailed literature surveying with relatively lesser involvement of author’s bias, systematic reviews are considered as gold standard articles. Systematic reviews can be diivded into qualitative, and quantitative reviews. In both of them detailed literature surveying is performed. However in quantitative reviews, study data are collected, and statistically evaluated (ie. meta-analysis). [ 8 ]

Before inquring for the method of preparation of a review article, it is more logical to investigate the motivation behind writing the review article in question. The fundamental rationale of writing a review article is to make a readable synthesis of the best literature sources on an important research inquiry or a topic. This simple definition of a review article contains the following key elements:

  • The question(s) to be dealt with
  • Methods used to find out, and select the best quality researches so as to respond to these questions.
  • To synthetize available, but quite different researches

For the specification of important questions to be answered, number of literature references to be consulted should be more or less determined. Discussions should be conducted with colleagues in the same area of interest, and time should be reserved for the solution of the problem(s). Though starting to write the review article promptly seems to be very alluring, the time you spend for the determination of important issues won’t be a waste of time. [ 9 ]

The PRISMA statement [ 6 ] elaborated to write a well-designed review articles contains a 27-item checklist ( Table 1 ). It will be reasonable to fulfill the requirements of these items during preparation of a review article or a meta-analysis. Thus preparation of a comprehensible article with a high-quality scientific content can be feasible.

Contents and format

Important differences exist between systematic, and non-systematic reviews which especially arise from methodologies used in the description of the literature sources. A non-systematic review means use of articles collected for years with the recommendations of your colleagues, while systematic review is based on struggles to search for, and find the best possible researches which will respond to the questions predetermined at the start of the review.

Though a consensus has been reached about the systematic design of the review articles, studies revealed that most of them had not been written in a systematic format. McAlister et al. analyzed review articles in 6 medical journals, and disclosed that in less than one fourth of the review articles, methods of description, evaluation or synthesis of evidence had been provided, one third of them had focused on a clinical topic, and only half of them had provided quantitative data about the extend of the potential benefits. [ 10 ]

Use of proper methodologies in review articles is important in that readers assume an objective attitude towards updated information. We can confront two problems while we are using data from researches in order to answer certain questions. Firstly, we can be prejudiced during selection of research articles or these articles might be biased. To minimize this risk, methodologies used in our reviews should allow us to define, and use researches with minimal degree of bias. The second problem is that, most of the researches have been performed with small sample sizes. In statistical methods in meta-analyses, available researches are combined to increase the statistical power of the study. The problematic aspect of a non-systematic review is that our tendency to give biased responses to the questions, in other words we apt to select the studies with known or favourite results, rather than the best quality investigations among them.

As is the case with many research articles, general format of a systematic review on a single subject includes sections of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion ( Table 2 ).

It might be helpful to divide the research question into components. The most prevalently used format for questions related to the treatment is PICO (P - Patient, Problem or Population; I-Intervention; C-appropriate Comparisons, and O-Outcome measures) procedure. For example In female patients (P) with stress urinary incontinence, comparisons (C) between transobturator, and retropubic midurethral tension-free band surgery (I) as for patients’ satisfaction (O).

Finding Studies

In a systematic review on a focused question, methods of investigation used should be clearly specified.

Ideally, research methods, investigated databases, and key words should be described in the final report. Different databases are used dependent on the topic analyzed. In most of the clinical topics, Medline should be surveyed. However searching through Embase and CINAHL can be also appropriate.

While determining appropriate terms for surveying, PICO elements of the issue to be sought may guide the process. Since in general we are interested in more than one outcome, P, and I can be key elements. In this case we should think about synonyms of P, and I elements, and combine them with a conjunction AND.

One method which might alleviate the workload of surveying process is “methodological filter” which aims to find the best investigation method for each research question. A good example of this method can be found in PubMed interface of Medline. The Clinical Queries tool offers empirically developed filters for five different inquiries as guidelines for etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis or clinical prediction.

Evaluation of the Quality of the Study

As an indispensable component of the review process is to discriminate good, and bad quality researches from each other, and the outcomes should be based on better qualified researches, as far as possible. To achieve this goal you should know the best possible evidence for each type of question The first component of the quality is its general planning/design of the study. General planning/design of a cohort study, a case series or normal study demonstrates variations.

A hierarchy of evidence for different research questions is presented in Table 4 . However this hierarchy is only a first step. After you find good quality research articles, you won’t need to read all the rest of other articles which saves you tons of time. [ 14 ]

Determination of levels of evidence based on the type of the research question

Formulating a Synthesis

Rarely all researches arrive at the same conclusion. In this case a solution should be found. However it is risky to make a decision based on the votes of absolute majority. Indeed, a well-performed large scale study, and a weakly designed one are weighed on the same scale. Therefore, ideally a meta-analysis should be performed to solve apparent differences. Ideally, first of all, one should be focused on the largest, and higher quality study, then other studies should be compared with this basic study.

In conclusion, during writing process of a review article, the procedures to be achieved can be indicated as follows: 1) Get rid of fixed ideas, and obsessions from your head, and view the subject from a large perspective. 2) Research articles in the literature should be approached with a methodological, and critical attitude and 3) finally data should be explained in an attractive way.

Before you begin searching for literature, you need a clearly defined topic .

If you are writing the literature review section of a dissertation or research paper, you will search for literature related to your research problem and questions .

Make a list of keywords

Start by creating a list of keywords related to your research question. Include each of the key concepts or variables you’re interested in, and list any synonyms and related terms. You can add to this list as you discover new keywords in the process of your literature search.

Search for relevant sources

Use your keywords to begin searching for sources. Some useful databases to search for journals and articles include:

  • Your university’s library catalogue

  • Project Muse (humanities and social sciences)
  • Medline (life sciences and biomedicine)
  • EconLit (economics)
  • Inspec (physics, engineering and computer science)

You can also use boolean operators to help narrow down your search.

Make sure to read the abstract to find out whether an article is relevant to your question. When you find a useful book or article, you can check the bibliography to find other relevant sources.

You likely won’t be able to read absolutely everything that has been written on your topic, so it will be necessary to evaluate which sources are most relevant to your research question.

For each publication, ask yourself:

  • What question or problem is the author addressing?
  • What are the key concepts and how are they defined?
  • What are the key theories, models, and methods?
  • Does the research use established frameworks or take an innovative approach?
  • What are the results and conclusions of the study?
  • How does the publication relate to other literature in the field? Does it confirm, add to, or challenge established knowledge?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the research?

As you read, you should also begin the writing process. Take notes that you can later incorporate into the text of your literature review.

To begin organizing your literature review’s argument and structure, be sure you understand the connections and relationships between the sources you’ve read. Based on your reading and notes, you can look for:

  • Trends and patterns (in theory, method or results): do certain approaches become more or less popular over time?

  • Debates, conflicts and contradictions: where do sources disagree?
  • Pivotal publications: are there any influential theories or studies that changed the direction of the field?
  • Gaps: what is missing from the literature? Are there weaknesses that need to be addressed?

This step will help you work out the structure of your literature review and (if applicable) show how your own research will contribute to existing knowledge.

  • Most research has focused on young women.
  • There is an increasing interest in the visual aspects of social media.
  • But there is still a lack of robust research on highly visual platforms like Instagram and Snapchat—this is a gap that you could address in your own research.

There are various approaches to organizing the body of a literature review. Depending on the length of your literature review, you can combine several of these strategies (for example, your overall structure might be thematic, but each theme is discussed chronologically).

Chronological

The simplest approach is to trace the development of the topic over time. However, if you choose this strategy, be careful to avoid simply listing and summarizing sources in order.

Try to analyze patterns, turning points and key debates that have shaped the direction of the field. Give your interpretation of how and why certain developments occurred.

If you have found some recurring central themes, you can organize your literature review into subsections that address different aspects of the topic.

For example, if you are reviewing literature about inequalities in migrant health outcomes, key themes might include healthcare policy, language barriers, cultural attitudes, legal status, and economic access.

Methodological

If you draw your sources from different disciplines or fields that use a variety of research methods , you might want to compare the results and conclusions that emerge from different approaches. For example:

  • Look at what results have emerged in qualitative versus quantitative research
  • Discuss how the topic has been approached by empirical versus theoretical scholarship
  • Divide the literature into sociological, historical, and cultural sources

Theoretical

A literature review is often the foundation for a theoretical framework . You can use it to discuss various theories, models, and definitions of key concepts.

You might argue for the relevance of a specific theoretical approach, or combine various theoretical concepts to create a framework for your research.

Like any other academic text , your literature review should have an introduction , a main body, and a conclusion . What you include in each depends on the objective of your literature review.

The introduction should clearly establish the focus and purpose of the literature review.

Depending on the length of your literature review, you might want to divide the body into subsections. You can use a subheading for each theme, time period, or methodological approach.

As you write, you can follow these tips:

  • Summarize and synthesize: give an overview of the main points of each source and combine them into a coherent whole
  • Analyze and interpret: don’t just paraphrase other researchers — add your own interpretations where possible, discussing the significance of findings in relation to the literature as a whole
  • Critically evaluate: mention the strengths and weaknesses of your sources
  • Write in well-structured paragraphs: use transition words and topic sentences to draw connections, comparisons and contrasts

In the conclusion, you should summarize the key findings you have taken from the literature and emphasize their significance.

Writing a review article also helps to expand the writer's knowledge of their specialist area and to develop their analytical and communication skills, amongst other benefits. Thus, the importance of building review-writing into a scientific career cannot be overstated. In this instalment of The FEBS Journal's Words of Advice series, I provide detailed guidance on planning and writing an informative and engaging literature review.

Opinions: as half of the old saying goes, everyone’s got ‘em. Whether it’s on Twitter, on Yelp, or in Facebook posts from your great-aunt’s best friend, we’re constantly subjected to other people’s opinions—so if you want to share your take with a wider audience, it’s worthwhile to think about how to make it stand out. And if you zoom in on an opinion, build it out, and give it structure, you’ve got yourself a review.

You can review basically anything if you find the right outlet for it, but the best way to present your thoughts depends on what you’re writing about and who your audience is. But with most types of reviews, there’s a simple structure you can stick to in order to help you get started:

Before you write, make sure you know the general message you want to convey. A simple thesis will help keep your review from straying off-topic. This could be as straightforward as “I really liked this meal!” or as complex as “These shoes took a while to wear in.” Think to yourself: If I were telling a friend about this, what would I want their main takeaway to be?

2 Likes and dislikes

In the most glowing review, you may not include any dislikes. If the review is critical, try to find at least one positive to include, just to provide a break in between your incredible zings.

3 Your recommendation

A star rating may be the first thing most people see, but when folks skim your review, they’ll probably check the bottom for an idea of whether or not you’d recommend the meal, album, hike, or movie to others. You could also include a short explanation, like “I knocked it down one star because my utensils were dirty,” or “I’d recommend this play, but only if you’re as big of a musical theater buff as I am.”

Remember that you’re reviewing a book that another human poured their heart and soul into to write. Express your honest opinion, but don’t be nasty about it. Imagine if it were your book being reviewed, how would you want a reader to express their critique?

Avoid vague words and phrases like “The service was bad” or “The pie was great.” Instead, provide specific details like, “The server was friendly but inexperienced and botched our drink order” or “The lemon meringue pie had a wonderfully flaky crust, a tart and tangy filling, and dreamy melt-in-your-mouth meringue.”

No matter what kind of review you’re writing, here are a few more quick tips:

  • Judge the product, restaurant, escape room, or dog park for what it is. If you’re reviewing a McDonald’s, don’t complain about how you weren’t waited on hand and foot. Write your review based on reasonable expectations.
  • Assume the best. You’re often assessing someone’s execution of their vision or product of their hard work, especially when it comes to art or food. You’re also more than likely writing this review on the internet, where the creator could probably find and see it in just a few clicks. We’re all human—assume the people who made this thing weren’t out to get you.
  • Check your writing. Reviews reflect back on you, and readers might not take your opinion seriously if your spelling is all over the place or you use the word “ambiance” three times in one sentence. Grammarly can help you make sure your review is as effective as possible.

A literature review is a document or section of a document that collects key sources on a topic and discusses those sources in conversation with each other (also called synthesis ). The lit review is an important genre in many disciplines, not just literature (i.e., the study of works of literature such as novels and plays). When we say “literature review” or refer to “the literature,” we are talking about the research ( scholarship ) in a given field. You will often see the terms “the research,” “the scholarship,” and “the literature” used mostly interchangeably.

Where, when, and why would I write a lit review?

There are a number of different situations where you might write a literature review, each with slightly different expectations; different disciplines, too, have field-specific expectations for what a literature review is and does. For instance, in the humanities, authors might include more overt argumentation and interpretation of source material in their literature reviews, whereas in the sciences, authors are more likely to report study designs and results in their literature reviews; these differences reflect these disciplines’ purposes and conventions in scholarship. You should always look at examples from your own discipline and talk to professors or mentors in your field to be sure you understand your discipline’s conventions, for literature reviews as well as for any other genre.

A literature review can be a part of a research paper or scholarly article, usually falling after the introduction and before the research methods sections. In these cases, the lit review just needs to cover scholarship that is important to the issue you are writing about; sometimes it will also cover key sources that informed your research methodology.

Lit reviews can also be standalone pieces, either as assignments in a class or as publications. In a class, a lit review may be assigned to help students familiarize themselves with a topic and with scholarship in their field, get an idea of the other researchers working on the topic they’re interested in, find gaps in existing research in order to propose new projects, and/or develop a theoretical framework and methodology for later research. As a publication, a lit review usually is meant to help make other scholars’ lives easier by collecting and summarizing, synthesizing, and analyzing existing research on a topic. This can be especially helpful for students or scholars getting into a new research area, or for directing an entire community of scholars toward questions that have not yet been answered.

What are the parts of a lit review?

Most lit reviews use a basic introduction-body-conclusion structure; if your lit review is part of a larger paper, the introduction and conclusion pieces may be just a few sentences while you focus most of your attention on the body. If your lit review is a standalone piece, the introduction and conclusion take up more space and give you a place to discuss your goals, research methods, and conclusions separately from where you discuss the literature itself.

Introduction:

  • An introductory paragraph that explains what your working topic and thesis is
  • A forecast of key topics or texts that will appear in the review
  • Potentially, a description of how you found sources and how you analyzed them for inclusion and discussion in the review (more often found in published, standalone literature reviews than in lit review sections in an article or research paper)
  • Summarize and synthesize: Give an overview of the main points of each source and combine them into a coherent whole
  • Analyze and interpret: Don’t just paraphrase other researchers – add your own interpretations where possible, discussing the significance of findings in relation to the literature as a whole
  • Critically Evaluate: Mention the strengths and weaknesses of your sources
  • Write in well-structured paragraphs: Use transition words and topic sentence to draw connections, comparisons, and contrasts.

Conclusion:

  • Summarize the key findings you have taken from the literature and emphasize their significance
  • Connect it back to your primary research question

How should I organize my lit review?

Lit reviews can take many different organizational patterns depending on what you are trying to accomplish with the review. Here are some examples:

  • Chronological : The simplest approach is to trace the development of the topic over time, which helps familiarize the audience with the topic (for instance if you are introducing something that is not commonly known in your field). If you choose this strategy, be careful to avoid simply listing and summarizing sources in order. Try to analyze the patterns, turning points, and key debates that have shaped the direction of the field. Give your interpretation of how and why certain developments occurred (as mentioned previously, this may not be appropriate in your discipline — check with a teacher or mentor if you’re unsure).
  • Thematic : If you have found some recurring central themes that you will continue working with throughout your piece, you can organize your literature review into subsections that address different aspects of the topic. For example, if you are reviewing literature about women and religion, key themes can include the role of women in churches and the religious attitude towards women.
  • Qualitative versus quantitative research
  • Empirical versus theoretical scholarship
  • Divide the research by sociological, historical, or cultural sources
  • Theoretical : In many humanities articles, the literature review is the foundation for the theoretical framework. You can use it to discuss various theories, models, and definitions of key concepts. You can argue for the relevance of a specific theoretical approach or combine various theorical concepts to create a framework for your research.

What are some strategies or tips I can use while writing my lit review?

Any lit review is only as good as the research it discusses; make sure your sources are well-chosen and your research is thorough. Don’t be afraid to do more research if you discover a new thread as you’re writing. More info on the research process is available in our "Conducting Research" resources .

As you’re doing your research, create an annotated bibliography ( see our page on the this type of document ). Much of the information used in an annotated bibliography can be used also in a literature review, so you’ll be not only partially drafting your lit review as you research, but also developing your sense of the larger conversation going on among scholars, professionals, and any other stakeholders in your topic.

Usually you will need to synthesize research rather than just summarizing it. This means drawing connections between sources to create a picture of the scholarly conversation on a topic over time. Many student writers struggle to synthesize because they feel they don’t have anything to add to the scholars they are citing; here are some strategies to help you:

  • It often helps to remember that the point of these kinds of syntheses is to show your readers how you understand your research, to help them read the rest of your paper.
  • Writing teachers often say synthesis is like hosting a dinner party: imagine all your sources are together in a room, discussing your topic. What are they saying to each other?
  • Look at the in-text citations in each paragraph. Are you citing just one source for each paragraph? This usually indicates summary only. When you have multiple sources cited in a paragraph, you are more likely to be synthesizing them (not always, but often
  • Read more about synthesis here.

The most interesting literature reviews are often written as arguments (again, as mentioned at the beginning of the page, this is discipline-specific and doesn’t work for all situations). Often, the literature review is where you can establish your research as filling a particular gap or as relevant in a particular way. You have some chance to do this in your introduction in an article, but the literature review section gives a more extended opportunity to establish the conversation in the way you would like your readers to see it. You can choose the intellectual lineage you would like to be part of and whose definitions matter most to your thinking (mostly humanities-specific, but this goes for sciences as well). In addressing these points, you argue for your place in the conversation, which tends to make the lit review more compelling than a simple reporting of other sources.

Final Four highlights, scores: UConn, Purdue will clash in men's title game

The showdown for the NCAA men's basketball championship is set: UConn will face Purdue on Monday night after knocking out Alabama 86-72 in a Saturday night semifinal in Phoenix. In the first men's semifinal at the Final Four , it was No. 1 Purdue 63, No. 11 NC State 50.

The Huskies are aiming to become the first team in men’s college basketball to repeat as champions since Florida did it in 2006-07, while the Boilermakers will be playing for their first basketball championship.

UConn defeats Alabama

Purdue defeats NC State

Battle of the giants Monday: Zach Edey vs. Donovan Clingan

Nice effort, NC State. You too, Alabama.

Now, for the national championship, it’ll be No. 1 seed UConn vs. No. 1 seed Purdue. Which means Donovan Clingan, UConn’s 7-2 center, vs. Zach Edey, Purdue’s 7-4 center and two-time national player of the year.

"A battle of the giants," UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “I think it’s just great for college basketball. You know, us and Purdue have clearly been the best two teams in the country the last two years, and I think it’s just great for college basketball to get the two big dogs playing on Monday night."

UConn 86, Alabama 72

UConn subdued feisty Alabama, 86-72, Saturday at the Final Four and now is in position to win a second straight national championship.

All five of UConn’s starters scored in double-figures, and Stephon Castle led the way with 21 points. Donovan Clingan had 18 points and five rebounds.

Mark Sears led Alabama with a game-high 24 points.

The Huskies capitalized on their size with eight blocked shots and by going 14-for-18 from the free-throw line.

The knockout has landed

A Clingan dunk served as the official KO blow. UConn’s lead is up to 12 with less than 1:30 to play.

Big threes fall, time running out

Alex Karaban’s deep 3-pointer stretched UConn’s lead to 11 points at 76-65 with 3:39 left to play. Sears answers with a three of his own.

UConn starts to pull away

The Huskies took their biggest lead, at 71-61, on Clingan’s second-chance layup with 5:07 left. Then he delivered a blocked shot. 

Will UConn deliver KO blow?

UConn stretched its lead to nine, but the Huskies haven’t been able to land a knockout blow. This time, Sears answered for Alabama with a corkscrew-like layup while getting fouled, followed by a free throw.

Sears has a team-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

UConn leads 69-61 heading into a commercial break with 7:34 left to play.

Can Alabama heat up again?

Hard to imagine Alabama has a chance unless it can heat up from 3-point range again. In the first half, Alabama was 8-for-11 from the 3-point range. This half, the Crimson Tide is 2-for-7. And yes, UConn's defense has greatly influenced that.

Alabama coach Nate Oats apparently is calling for great energy from his team, per TBS.

UConn leads 64-58 with less than 10 minutes to play.

Huskies on the run again

Down by as many as eight points in the half, Alabama rallied and tied the game on Grant Nelson’s short hook shot in the lane, and suddenly the game is tied 56-56 with less than 13 minutes to play.

Not much time to celebrate for Alabama fans.

UConn promptly went on an 8-0 run and leads 64-56 with 10:27 left to play.

The Huskies are benefitting from their size and strength while drawing fouls. They’re 14-for-18 from the free-throw line.

The Full (Grant) Nelson!

Alabama’s Grant Nelson just dunked over UConn’s 7-2 Donovan Clingan, leading Bill Rafferty to exult, “We just got the full Nelson from Grant Nelson!’’

UConn leads 55-54 with about 14 ½ minutes to play. 

Alabama not folding

The Crimson Tide fell behind by eight points when UConn opened the half with a 4-0 spurt for a 48-40 lead. But the  Crimson Tide responded with a 3-pointer – what else? – and  pulled within 48-47.

Inside the box score

UConn’s size is paying off at the line because it’s drawing fouls. The Huskies are 11-for-14 on free throws. Alabama is 4-for-5 on free throws.

Despite the breakneck pace, UConn has committed only two turnovers and Alabama has committed an acceptable five.

Mark Sears led Alabama with 11 points and his next missed shot will be his first missed shot. He’s 5-for-5 from the floor.

Halftime: UConn 44, Alabama 40

Pretty clear UConn has the superior talent and depth. But wow, Alabama can shot the three and is playing with high energy.

The Crimson Tide is 8-for-11 from 3-point range, and all five starters have made at least one trey. It’s a key reason Alabama led by as many as five points in the first half.

But the Huskies proved more dominant inside, while Stephon Castle led UConn with 13 points. 

UConn on the move

The Huskies, who have trailed by as many as five points, took a seven-point lead at 42-35 on a basket from Clingan with 1:15 to play in the half. 

Foul trouble – or not?

UConn’s Alex Karaban goes to the bench with two fouls. By contrast, Alabama has left Mark Sears and Grant Nelson on the floor with two fouls apiece. The Huskies have the depth to be conservative, and would Alabama be in the game with Sears and Nelson on the bench?

UConn leads 35-31 with about three minutes left in the half.

UConn cold from three

Alabama is now having trouble finding open shots against UConn’s suffocating defense. Problem for the Huskies: They’ve missed eight straight threes.

UConn leads 30-28 with about five minutes to play in the half.

Alabama-UConn being played at frenetic pace

Play’s still a little ragged at times, but fast-paced, and appears to be benefitting Alabama. Yes, UConn went on a 10-2 run and retook the lead at 28-25. But then the Crimson Tide did what it does: fire from 3. Aaron Estrada’s 3-pointer pulled Alabama even with UConn at 28-28 and 7:31 left in the half.

Donovan Clingan throws down monster dunk

Donovan Clingan, UConn’s 7-2 center, has surfaced. Though his right hand is bandaged, it appears to be no serious impediment. Clingan made a left-hand hook shot and on UConn’s next possession threw down a monster dunk on a fast break to put UConn back in the lead, 24-23. About 9½ minutes left in the half.

Alabama on fire from outside

Alabama has made 5 of 7 3-pointers and looks more than comfortable in its first Final Four appearance. Rylan Griffen has made a pair and three other Alabama players have made 3s. Alabama leads 23-20 at a commercial break with 10:24 left in the half. 

Alabama hanging tough with UConn

Alabama star Mark Sears finally scores, despite it taking almost seven minutes. Alabama is deadlocked with UConn at 15-15 with about 13 minutes left in the first half. The Crimson Tide looked slightly undersized but not at all intimidated. 

Alabama, UConn letting the 3s fly

Alabama’s known for the 3s and has made 3-of-4 attempts. But UConn’s not afraid to let it fly, and now is 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

Alabama takes lead on UConn ... briefly

It didn’t last long but let the record show that Alabama, in its first trip to the Final Four, opened the scoring on Grant Nelson’s 3-pointer. Not bad considering UConn’s Donovan Clingan blocked Nelson’s layup attempt.

UConn now leads 13-8 heading into a commercial break with 15:31 left in the half.

Stephon Castle leads UConn with eight points and has buried two open 3-pointers. Nelson leads Alabama with five points.

UConn vs. Alabama: What would key Crimson Tide upset?

UConn is heavily favored over Alabama for good reason. They Huskies have steamrolled opposing teams in the NCAA Tournament.

But Jay Wright, the retired Villanova coach, pointed out during the TBS telecast that UConn’s last loss came when the opposing team (Creighton) made 14 3-pointers. (The Huskies lost that game on the road, 85-66, on Feb. 20.)

Alabama certainly is capable of a 3-point barrage. The Crimson Tide average 11.2 3-pointers per game this season, second highest in the country. 

Purdue to play for first national title

Purdue was led by Zach Edey (20 points and 12 rebounds). He was joined in double figures by Fletcher Loyer (11 points) and Lance Jones (14 points). Braden Smith was off from the field (1 of 8) but filled the box score with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. It was all about DJ Horne (20 points) for the Wolfpack, who only got eight points on 4 of 10 shooting from forward DJ Burns and couldn’t do anything inside the paint against Edey and Purdue’s frontcourt.

Boilermakers in control, thanks to three-pointers

The Boilermakers have put N.C. State in their rearview mirror with 3:12 left. The lead is now 61-43 and the Wolfpack just don’t have the offensive punch to keep pace with Purdue’s deep collection of scorers. The big edge in the second half has been shooting from deep: Purdue has now scored 30 points from 3-point range, supporting another solid effort from Zach Edey (20 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists). The Boilermakers are on a 12-1 run over the last four minutes.

Purdue's lead grows with five minutes remaining

OK, Purdue might be on the verge of putting N.C. State away. The lead is now up to 55-43 with 5:20 left, marking the Boilermakers’ biggest advantage of the game. That Purdue hasn’t looked good while building this advantage isn’t something to lose sleep over. (Though they’ll have to clean things up before meeting Connecticut or Alabama.)

D.J. Horne carries scoring load for NC State

Where would N.C. State be without guard DJ Horne? With teammate DJ Burns struggling to get going, Horne has carried the offensive load with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. He’s accounted for almost half of the Wolfpack’s total as Purdue takes a 49-42 lead into yet another commercial break with 7:37 to play.

Purdue threatening to pull away

Purdue leads 47-38 with 9:51 to go thanks to N.C. State’s struggles from the field. The Wolfpack are just 3 of 16 in the second half. While the Boilermakers aren’t much better at 4 of 12, three of those makes are from deep. You’ve heard this already several times through 30 minutes: Purdue is threatening to pull away.

Purdue boosts its lead despite sloppy play

This has been a sloppy second half. Purdue committed four turnovers in a five-minute span, N.C. State has missed seven shots in a row during a scoring drought lasting almost four minutes and the Boilermakers have pushed their lead to 45-33 with 12:30 to go after a 3-pointer in transition by senior guard Lance Jones. That 12-point lead ties Purdue’s biggest of the game.

Missed opportunities for Purdue

If N.C. State is able to pull off this upset and reach Monday night’s title game, Purdue will look back at the handful of missed opportunities in the first 25 minutes to deliver a knockout blow. Every time the Boilermakers push the lead to double digits, they’ll have a sloppy offensive possession or turn the ball over to give the Wolfpack life. And give N.C. State a lot of credit for sticking to its game and not overreacting when Purdue does get a little bit of breathing room.

Purdue’s 35-29 halftime lead has grown just slightly to 39-33 after the first four minutes of the second half. Both teams have been feeding the ball inside: N.C. State has tried to get DJ Burns more involved after a quiet first half and the Boilermakers are tossing it down low to Zach Edey, though the Wolfpack have aggressively combated Edey’s size advantage with some double teams and some quick hands and takeaways in the post.

NC State vs Purdue: What each team must do in second half

What needs to change for both teams in the second half? For Purdue, it will be about cutting down on turnovers (eight at halftime) and continuing to feed Zach Edey in the post. The Boilermakers also need to keep hammering the boards for second-chance points. N.C. State has to scratch and claw to keep pace on the glass while getting more out of forward DJ Burns. With guard Michael O’Connell’s availability in doubt due to an apparent hamstring injury, the Wolfpack also need to find somebody who can pick up the slack from 3-point range. — Paul Myerberg

NC State fights back vs. Purdue, trails by six at halftime

N.C. State is right in this game with Purdue. While the Boilermakers take a 35-29 lead into halftime after a late 3 from guard Fletcher Loyer, the Wolfpack have weathered a 12-point deficit, another dominant start from Zach Edey (14 points, 8 rebounds) and a poor performance on the boards to stay within striking distance with 20 minutes to go. DJ Horne (13 points) has been the top scorer for the ‘Pack, who have landed just four points from senior DJ Burns after he picked up two fouls. If they can get him going in the second half, look out. 

NC State getting dominated on the boards

The three main factors behind Purdue’s 30-25 lead with 3:45 to go until halftime: Zach Edey (14 points), turnovers and rebounding. N.C. State has turned the ball over four times, with the Boilermakers turning those takeaways into seven points. And the Wolfpack are getting dominated on the boards, as expected. Purdue has 18 rebounds, seven offensive, to N.C. State’s 10. But the ‘Pack have been feisty in transition to make this a competitive first half.

Zach Edey already has 10 points for Purdue

It doesn’t look like N.C. State is going to have an answer for Zach Edey. The senior is now up to 10 points and five rebounds as he heads to the line with 6:29 left in the first half, showing off an assortment of post moves and a surprisingly soft touch against the Wolfpack’s undersized front line. After averaging 30 points per game in advancing through the West Region, Edey is picking up where he left off to key Purdue’s 26-16 lead.

Wolfpack guard Michael O'Connell hurt

N.C. State guard Michael O’Connell was taken into the locker room after falling awkwardly in the open court. O’Connell was driving toward the Purdue basket with the Boilermakers up 14-9 with 13:47 left in the first half when he stumbled and lost control of the ball, leading to a turnover. Purdue has since pushed the lead to 18-11 with 11 minutes to go until halftime.

Purdue dominating the boards

The early rebounding results do not bode well for NC State. Purdue has a 7-1 edge in rebounds and 10 second-chance points. The Boilermakers lead 12-7 with about 15 minutes left in the first half.

How can Purdue be stopped?

A media timeout with 15:46 left in the first half was about the most effective way yet. Purdue leads 12-4, with four different Boilermakers having scored. Zach Edey has two points. Only DJ Horne has scored for the Wolfpack.

DJ Burns an unlikely star that has powered NC State to Final Four. 'Nobody plays like him'  

They used to sit down as a family every Sunday night and talk about their dreams, what they wanted out of life, and this is what DJ Burns envisioned for himself.  

OK, maybe not exactly this because there was no way to dream up how North Carolina State would wind up in a Final Four and how Burns would become one of those guys who goes from a largely unknown college basketball player to folk hero in the span of three weeks. It’s a story too ludicrous to invent, a set of circumstances too ridiculous to anticipate.  

But in broad strokes, Dwight and Takela Burns knew they had a son who was gifted and a little bit stubborn and, most of all, huge.

Purdue says they're playing their best basketball as Final Four approaches  

Matt Painter is in his 31st season as a college basketball coach, 19th with the Purdue Boilermakers. 

He's never held a practice in April. But that changes this week as Painter's team hits the court at State Farm Stadium to get ready for the Final Four, taking on North Carolina State in the first semifinal on Saturday. The run to the national semifinals has Painter believing his team is playing its best basketball at present. 

"Especially when you get on a neutral court, you know, Utah State won the Mountain West, they got six teams in the tournament. We got a pretty convincing win against them and then we beat programs like Gonzaga and Tennessee," Painter said Tuesday night right after the Boilermakers arrived in Phoenix. 

"The problem is everybody that we play can say the same thing. But yeah, I think we're playing very good. And we got beat in our tournament,'' he said. "And I think a lot of coaches would talk, I don't think that's that big of a deal. Even though it's hard as a competitor, you want to win all the games you play." — José M. Zach Edey is back and leading Purdue into March Madness again, and is a major reason the Boilermakers are a No. 1 seed for the second straight season. This time, Purdue is hoping for a better outcome than last year – when it was eliminated by a No. 16 seed – and looking to make the Final Four for the first time since 1980. NC State's 1983 national champion Wolfpack men remain a team, 41 years later  

The voice on the other end of the line boomed. "Great day to be a Wolfpack!" Dereck Whittenburg said at the outset of a phone call this week. 

Just about every day has been a great day to be part of the  North Carolina State Wolfpack  during March Madness – especially for people like Whittenburg, a key member of the school's 1983 national championship team that went on a magical postseason run 41 years ago. 

This week, the current NC State men’s and women’s teams  will be playing at the Final Four , with the former never having been ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll all season. 

“It shows you all things are possible," Whittenburg said. “We showed that 41 years ago." 

During the team’s 40-year reunion last year, Whittenburg commemorated its history. He gave each of his former teammates a plaque that included pieces of the court from The Pit, the arena in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where NC State won the national championship. (The court had been replaced and was in storage.) The North Carolina State men's basketball team's extraordinary postseason run continued Sunday, and coach Kevin Keatts' financial present — and future — kept getting brighter. 

The No. 11 seed Wolfpack reached the Final Four  with a 76-64 defeat of No. 4 seed Duke in the South Region final. As a result, in addition to $300,000 in on-court performance bonuses this season, Keatts now stands to gain at least $8.8 million in future scheduled contract value from his team’s  five-wins-in-five-days run through the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament  and continued roll through  the NCAA Tournament . — Steve Berkowitz

NC State has done enough to prove they are not only worthy of a shot at the title, but they could very well earn a trip to the championship game. DJ Burns and DJ Horne have been the consistent duo you need to get this close to ultimate glory. But to finish the job, they will have to get past the immovable force that is Zach Edey and Purdue . Rookie brock faber led wild defenseman after captain jared spurgeon missed most of season, wild season review.

LOS ANGELES – Wild captain Jared Spurgeon started late and barely made it to January, all because of injury.

The penalty kill flirted with becoming the worst in NHL history.

Then there were the results: Four losses by five goals, a pair of 6-0 blowouts, and once the Wild even surrendered seven in a win.

But the season wasn't a complete bust for the blue line, not when Brock Faber was the Wild's breakout star.

Faber's emergence as an all-purpose specialist the past six months should make him a finalist for Rookie of the Year, and yet the future is when he could really make a splash.

If this is just the beginning for Faber, he has the skill to lead the Wild defense's turnaround.

"It's really exciting," coach John Hynes said. "He's played really solid hockey. I think when you look at the substance of Brock's game — the skating, the size, his competitiveness, his ability to really start to grow his offensive game with some power-play time, his ability to join the rush and his offensive blue-line play — there's a lot of substance to that, and that's something he should be excited about.

"We're certainly excited about it."

At 21, Faber is the youngest Wild defenseman, but he didn't play like it.

He previewed this effectiveness a year ago: After the Maple Grove native left the Gophers last April to sign with the Wild following a trade from Los Angeles for Kevin Fiala in 2022, he made a smooth transition from college to the NHL during two regular-season games and was downright impressive in the playoffs; the Wild were never scored on while he was on the ice.

Still, there's a difference between fitting in and becoming the most utilized defenseman on the team, and that's exactly what happened to Faber.

While suiting up for every game, the 6-1, 200-pound Faber has averaged 24 minutes, 59 seconds, which is the sixth-highest ice time in the league .

The 33:25 he skated Dec. 21 vs. Montreal is the most anyone has played in a game this season.

He's blocked 150 shots and despite how often he went up against stiff competition, the Wild have scored more goals than they've given up at even strength when Faber is in action.

As for where he ranks among rookies, Faber is first in assists (39) and third in points (46), with Faber quarterbacking the power play for the first time in his career.

The Calder Trophy, which recognizes the best rookie, has turned into a showdown between him and Chicago's Connor Bedard, who is first in rookie scoring.

"I have the utmost respect for every other rookie in the league," Faber said. "I try to really not focus on that."

Around Faber was adversity.

Spurgeon was sidelined almost the entire first month with a shoulder injury and then was ruled out after appearing in only 16 games because of hip and back issues that resulted in surgery .

Fellow veterans Alex Goligoski, Zach Bogosian (whom the Wild acquired in an early-season shakeup that included trading away Calen Addison) and Jonas Brodin also were hurt, and the Wild relied on patchwork pairings.

Dakota Mermis, who was named captain for the Wild's American Hockey League affiliate in Iowa, has been in the minors for only five games. Daemon Hunt made his NHL debut before going back to Iowa. Declan Chisholm is in a regular role after getting claimed off waivers from Winnipeg.

Jake Middleton rarely left the lineup, and Jon Merrill eclipsed 60 games while Goligoski was a healthy scratch until recently.

"It's been up and down," Hynes said. "Some of the depth defensemen have had really good stretches. Sometimes it's been just OK, and I think that's something we have to look to collectively next year of getting more consistency in those areas of our lineup."

Everyone is signed through at least next season except Goligoski, Mermis and Chisholm, but Chisholm is a restricted free agent so the Wild own his rights.

Getting Spurgeon back is an immediate upgrade that helps reinstate the balance the Wild were lacking: The 256 goals they've allowed (3.16 per game) is near the middle of the league, but the Wild's 74.6% penalty kill is third-to-last after a 63.5% stint early in the season; 68.2% is the worst on record.

"Having guys back healthy at the start of next year, I think they'll be a new sense of confidence," Faber said, "but also still a bitter taste considering that we didn't make the playoffs for the first time in a while."

On Faber's offseason radar is getting stronger and faster.

He'll be eligible to sign a contract extension this summer, a situation Faber has tried not to think about but one he'll give his "full attention" to when the time comes.

"You see guys like [Nathan] MacKinnon, the way he skates," Faber said. "In order to defend him, you obviously have to be smart but also be able to skate, be strong, and I think playing those top players, top minutes, having those matchups the rest of this year, next year, that's a very important thing for me."

The challenges the Wild faced might have fast-tracked Faber up the depth chart but considering how well he acclimated, he was probably always bound for that climb.

"The fact that he was able to do what he did in lieu of the injuries with those opportunities," Hynes said, "he was obviously ready for that."

Title: review for handling missing data with special missing mechanism.

Abstract: Missing data poses a significant challenge in data science, affecting decision-making processes and outcomes. Understanding what missing data is, how it occurs, and why it is crucial to handle it appropriately is paramount when working with real-world data, especially in tabular data, one of the most commonly used data types in the real world. Three missing mechanisms are defined in the literature: Missing Completely At Random (MCAR), Missing At Random (MAR), and Missing Not At Random (MNAR), each presenting unique challenges in imputation. Most existing work are focused on MCAR that is relatively easy to handle. The special missing mechanisms of MNAR and MAR are less explored and understood. This article reviews existing literature on handling missing values. It compares and contrasts existing methods in terms of their ability to handle different missing mechanisms and data types. It identifies research gap in the existing literature and lays out potential directions for future research in the field. The information in this review will help data analysts and researchers to adopt and promote good practices for handling missing data in real-world problems.
