Creative Writing Lets Imagination Roam Free at Write On! Frisco

Write On Creative Writing Center 12.06.44 PM

Writing is part choice, part calling. And while you don’t have to do it particularly well to enjoy it, honing the craft can definitely make it more fun.

Dawn Rice has taught elementary classes, college courses, home school lessons, and writing workshops. So this educator and creative spirit is well-versed in myriad ways to draw creativity out of writers.

Write On Dawn

Secondly, she added workshops and camps. Write On! hosted its first camps in 2014 and they were an instant hit. Clearly the engaging prompts and focused lessons in a welcoming environment met a need in the community. However, the intimate setting also limited the number of attendees Dawn could welcome.

It was time to go “big time” and move into a retail space. Here’s some foreshadowing: this move coincided with the arrival of a global pandemic.

An Interesting Plot Twist

Write On! Creative Writing Center  opened to the public in mid-February. During the week of March 3, they hosted their first workshop. Next comes the conflict in this story — COVID-19.  Dawn had to close the doors almost immediately after her downtown Frisco storefront opened.

So, Dawn, like the hero in a story, improvised, innovated and overcame. But rather than wielding a sword or time traveling, she chose technology as her powerful ally. You guessed it.

Write On! went virtual, leading weekly creative writing workshops on Zoom. Additionally, there are two online series: “ Writing with the Moon ” and “ Nature Journaling .” In addition to continuing Zoom workshops and series, Dawn is gearing up for summer camps.

What’s Your Story?

You have a story, or ten, in you. Admit it. Also, you’ve likely toyed with the idea of putting them on paper. It’s in our DNA. Since ancient times, we’ve had a need to share our thoughts, hopes, and dreams. Not only can you have a great time improving your writing in Write On! workshops and summer camps, but Lifestyle Frisco readers can even get discounts. Here’s the lineup:

Zoom Workshops (free with the code WOScribe)

5/26 ~ Tuesday Getting Started with Journaling 3:30 – 4:30 pm

5/27 ~ Wednesday Word Art 3:30 – 4:30 Creative Writing Workshop 4:45 pm – 5:45 pm

5/28 ~ Thursday Journaling for Happiness and Stress Release 4:45 – 5:45 pm

Summer Camps (Use codes: LF10 – $10 Off Any Zoom Summer Camp; LF25 – $25 Off Any Summer Camp)

Write On! offers 10 weeks of half day and full day themed and more general Creative Writing Summer Camps as well as quarter day Zoom Camps.

First and foremost, camps are a time to unleash the imagination and discover the writer within. They’re also great for developing literacy skills, building confidence, and encouraging creativity. Camps start the first week of June and go through August 7.

We all have stories to tell and Dawn Rice and her team are ready to help. Here’s hoping you get to tell your stories and that they all end up happily ever after.

This guide provides an introduction to doing research on the topic of creative writing using American Folklife Center collections, and serves as a companion piece to an existing guide on Narrative and Verbal Arts in AFC collections. While the American Folklife Center archive contains primarily unpublished materials, in some cases a collection may include a manuscript or drafts of poems, essays or memoirs that were later published.

The Center's Collection Policy Statement lists nine areas of distinction for its collections, including "Narrative and Verbal Arts." The policy statement has this to say about this area of distinction:

Narrative and Verbal Arts encompass a wide range of genres including stories, myths, legends, jokes, fan literature, memes, proverbs, folk poetry, and cowboy poetry, as well as premier collections of American English regional dialects, plus collections of Gullah (Sea Islands Creole), Caribbean, and French-based Creole dialects.

For the purposes of this guide, "creative writing" encompasses examples of the written word found in AFC archival collections. This may refer to collections of materials written about AFC archival collections, or it may refer to a manuscript item that forms part of a donated collection. The items featured here often cross genres, including poetry, memoirs, and manuscripts for novels, essays and other non-fiction writing. To aid in navigation, collections have been grouped according to the following genres:

  • Autobiography and Memoir
  • Non-Fiction and Essays

Some collections may feature one creative writing style, while still others contain examples of multiple genres. In the latter case, the collection has been grouped according to the genre which best describes its contents.

In addition to these genre collections, the AFC archive also has items which pertain to the act of writing itself. These include interviews with notable authors which include descriptions of their writing process, as well as an exploration of writing for archival cataloguing.

Some of the collections and resources featured in this guide are available online. Others, including many non-digitized collections of note, require a visit to the American Folklife Center reading room. This guide is not intended to serve as a comprehensive record of all AFC archival collections relevant to this subject.

Writers Found in AFC Collections

  • Maya Angelou
  • Allen Ginsberg
  • Stetson Kennedy
  • Arthur Miller
  • Toni Morrison
  • Zora Neale Hurston
