  • We have a weak system of education
  • We impart useless knowledge to our students.
  • Modern counties are ruling the world because of their advancement in education.
  • The government should make our educational system more effective.
  • Commerce education should be promoted

  • Technology has brought many changes in the field of commerce and trade.
  • Only commerce Education can provide suitable professionals.
  • Hopefully, our government will take important steps to promote Commerce Education in the country.

Our education system is not working as properly as the developed countries of the world. Most of the students in our schools and colleges are not receiving a proper education. They are misdirected by the people who are not aware of the needs of the modern age. There is a basic disadvantage in our educational system. We are educating our students for useless knowledge. The simple education imparted in schools and colleges does not help the students in making their careers. They are unable to earn a decent living.

Europe and America are ruling the world just because of their advancement in education. Our government should understand the need of this age and should change the present educational system into a pragmatic, job oriented and specialized knowledge-based system. We must plan our Commerce Education system according to the needs of the international market. |The motive of Commerce Education should be to train such professionals who can work for the promotion of commerce and trade of the country. European nations realized the great advantages of Commerce Education therefore their industry and trade spread rapidly. They formulated a system of Commerce Education giving stress on professional skills and efficiency.

Only commerce Education can provide good business administrators and managers. The only way to compete with the international market is to improve our professional skills. Commerce as a subject should be promoted. A commerce graduate should be given priority over a simple graduate in the job market. Commerce has a vast variety in itself as it deals with Business, Banking, Accounting, Finance, Law, Income Tax, Business Statistics, and Business Communication.

A person having such knowledge in a profession can perform better than others. He can handle the professional problems more skillfully than a common man. Our government is still not playing its proper role to promote Commerce Education on modern grounds. But it is a matter of satisfaction that our private sector is very keen on this subject. They are updating the traditional approaches and adopting the latest techniques and methodologies to meet the challenges of the age. Practically the world has no geographical boundaries these days. Technological advancement has brought tremendous revolution in the fields of commerce and trade. Business is no more a native phenomenon.

Commerce and industry are directly related to each other. Our trade can only flourish if it has the right kind of professionals. Only Commerce education can produce specialists who can benefit our trade, industry, and economy. Our youth is very keen to learn and adopt this vast field. The prosperity of a country depends on its ability to trade with other countries.

It is hoped that the government will take important steps to establish a Commerce institution in every corner of the country. This is the only way to survive in this age of competition.

Essay on commerce: meaning, nature and other details.

the importance of commerce education essay

ADVERTISEMENTS:

“Commerce is the sum total of all those processes, which are engaged in the removal of hindrance of persons (trade), place (transport and insurance) and time (warehousing) in the exchange (banking) of commodities.”

Every human being is engaged in some kind of activity. These activities are undertaken with some motive. When the object is to create wealth for satisfying human needs, these are categorised as economic activities. If such activities are undertaken only to serve some cause without any economic motive i.e., to satisfy social, religious, cultural or sentimental requirements, these are called non-economic activities.

The motivating force for doing some work is to satisfy human wants. Human wants are unlimited and go on multiplying. The resources to satisfy the needs are limited. The use of scarce resources for satisfying human wants is very important.

The allocation of available resources is done in such a way that optimum satisfaction is achieved. The production of goods and services and making them available to consumers is the essence of economic activities. The distribution of goods and services from producers to the ultimate users is facilitated by commerce.

Commerce refers to all those activities which are necessary to bring goods and services from the place of their origin to the place of their consumption. In the words of Evelyn Thomas, “Commercial occupations deal with the buying and selling of goods, the exchange of commodities and the distribution of the finished products.

” According to Thomas, commerce deals with only the trading part of commerce and ignoring many other activities known as aids to trade which are also very important. According to Dr. Noel Branton, “Commerce comprises a group of specialised activities which together form an essential part of the process of production.”

It links suppliers and consumers by means of trade and activities auxiliary to trade such as transport, banking, insurance and warehousing. The most important links are provided by a series of markets controlled by the price system.

James Stephenson has given an exhaustive definition of commerce. He says that, “Commerce is the sum total of all those processes, which are engaged in the removal of hindrance of persons (trade), place (transport and insurance) and time (warehousing) in the exchange (banking) of commodities.”

Generally trade and commerce are taken as synonymous words. While trade involves buying and selling of goods, commerce has a wider meaning. Commerce includes trade and aids to trade. Besides trade, it includes all those activities which help the expansion of trade. The aids to trade include transport, banking, insurance, warehousing, advertisement and salesmanship.

Without the help of such agencies it is not possible to take goods from one place to another for making them available to consumers who are spread all over the world. The services of various agencies which facilitate transportation of goods, finance various activities, provide storing facilities, help in advertising goods and undertake various risks are not only helpful but are necessary for the growth of commerce.

Nature of Commerce :

Commerce is considered to be a part of business. It is that activity of business which is concerned with the exchange of goods and services. Some persons feel that commerce and business are synonymous.

The following characteristics will help in understanding the nature of commerce:

(i) Economic Activities:

Economic activities are taken up with a motive to earn profits. Commerce deals with those activities which are undertaken for profit. So only economic activities are included in commerce. It is the motive which is important and not the activity.

Some activity may both be economic and non-economic. A trader buys goods to sell them again and earn profit while a consumer buys goods for consumption. In the first case a motive is to make profit while in the second situation the motive of profit is absent. For a trader buying goods is an economic activity and a part of commerce while the purchase of goods by a consumer is non-economic activity, hence out of the purview of commerce.

(ii) Exchange of Goods and Services:

Commerce involves an exchange of goods and services for profit. The goods may be produced or procured from other sources. The purchase of goods should be to re-sell them. It means that goods should be purchased for trading purposes.

(iii) Earning Motive:

The motive for undertaking trading activities is to earn profit. Profit is an incentive or reward for undertaking commercial activities. Any activity which does not have the incentive of profit will not be a part of commerce. If a trader gives some goods as charity then it will not be a part of commerce because profit motive is missing. But if the same trader sells goods to customers, it will form a part of commerce because profit motive is present. So earning motive must be present in activities or transactions.

(iv) Creation of Utility:

Commerce creates place and time utility in goods. The goods may not be consumed at the place of production. These may be needed at different places. The goods are taken to those places where they are in need. Transportation facilities help in creating place utility in goods. The goods are also needed at different periods of time.

It may not be possible to produce goods whenever they are demanded. The producers go on producing goods as per their capacity. The goods are stored upto the time they are not demanded. The production is done at one time and consumers get them as per their needs. The storage facilities create time utility in goods. Both place and time utilities are helpful in increasing the volume of trade.

(v) Regularity of Transactions:

The transactions should be regular. No isolated transaction will be a part of commerce. The sale of old furniture for replacing it by new is not a part of commerce. At the same time the sale of furniture by a furniture trader is commerce since the transactions are regular.

Need for Commerce :

Commerce renders an important service in production and distribution of goods and services. The goods produced not only in different parts of a country but also in other countries are made available to the users with the help of commerce. It has enabled countries or areas to concentrate in the production of those goods for which they are specialised.

The producers are relieved of the marketing botherations and they use all their energies on accelerating production. Commerce helps in taking these goods to the users at various places. People are able to buy goods produced anywhere in the world.

Different countries have specialised in certain goods. They supply these goods to other countries and get their requirements from outside. Various agencies help in internal and external trade. The development of commerce has accelerated the pace of all round development.

Economic Basis of Commerce:

The principle of self sufficiency is no more practicable. People concentrate on the production of those goods in which they have cost advantage. The theory of comparative advantage or comparative costs of production are the basis of commerce. It gives rise to trade dealings between different persons and different areas. It will be profitable to specialise in the kind of activity in which one is most efficient.

No one region or country can be best fitted for the production of all commodities it needs. The theory of comparative costs holds good even in case of individuals. Every person will make a study of his comparative efficiency with regard to different professions that he may follow and choose that one which he feels is more rewarding or profitable. The division of labour and specialisation lead to the development of trade. Many factors influence the flow of goods from one region to the other.

Some places may be better suited for the production of particular goods as compared to others. The factors like climate, physical conditions, availability of factors of production at a region will determine as to what should be produced there. The products are sent to those places or countries where these cannot be produced at a comparative cost. The development of trade from local to international level is all due to the development of greater commercial facilities.

Branches of Commerce:

All those activities which are connected with taking goods and services from producers to users come under the purview of commerce. In between these two ends a number of obstacles have to be crossed. The goal of commerce is to ensure a proper flow of goods and services for the benefit of both producers and consumers. There may be difficulties with regard to trade, transport, distribution, finance, storage, insurance, publicity, etc. These aspects are dealt with and various difficulties are removed by the branches of commerce.

The branches of commerce are discussed as follows:

There is a need for some channel which may remit goods from the producers to the users. The producers may not come into direct contact with consumers or users of their products. There is a need for some agency which can facilitate the flow of goods. This is possible with the help of trade. Trade is the process of purchasing or procuring of goods and services and selling them to those who need them.

(ii) Transport:

Goods may be produced at places where they are in less demand. These goods are to be taken to the places of consumption. With the help of transport facilities we can create ‘place utility’ in goods. The goods are taken from a place where there is less demand, to the places where they are in more demand. The place utility helps the producer to increase the production and earn a remunerative price.

The consumer is also helped by supplying him with the goods which otherwise might not have reached him. The various modes of transport i.e., road, rail, sea, air have helped the growth of commerce and industries. The producer can produce goods on any scale; the demand will be there, provided the goods suit the consumers.

(iii) Distribution:

The producer of goods may not be able to come into direct contact with the consumers. In the present day world, the consumers are in millions and it is not possible for the producers to know the consumers. A chain of middlemen acts between the producers and consumers.

The middlemen purchase goods from the producers and take them to the consumers. Both sides are relieved of their worries. The chain of wholesalers, retailers, brokers, agents, etc. operate between the producers and the consumers and remove the hindrance of persons.

(iv) Banking:

There is always a time lag between production and sale of goods. The traders purchase goods from the producers and then sell to the consumers. It takes time to collect money after sale. There is a need to finance trade activities. The commercial banks help trade in the shape of overdraft, loans, or cash credit.

The banks play an important role in international trade where trading parties are not known to each other. The documents are sent through banks who release the documents after collecting the dues. So banks help in overcoming financial problems.

(v) Warehousing:

Goods are produced in anticipation of demand. They may also be produced at a time when they are not needed. So there is a need to store goods up to a time these are not required for consumption. The hindrance of time is overcome with the help of warehouse.

The foreign trade needs the help of warehoused even more because there is more time gap between production and consumption. Agricultural products are produced seasonally, but they are required throughout the year. So there is need to store them so that they may be supplied according to demand.

(vi) Advertisement and Salesmanship:

The consumers may not be aware of the availability of various goods in the market. The absence of information about goods is a great hindrance in the way of consumers buying them. The producer will also like to increase his customers. The advertisement and salesmanship help in informing the consumer about the availability and usefulness of various products in the market.

(vii) Insurance:

There is a risk involved in transporting goods from one place to another. There can be a risk due to fire or theft. The fear of loss of goods due to any cause acts as an obstacle in the development of trade. The insurance companies provide a coverage for all types of losses of goods. The insurance coverage has given a fillip not only to the national trade but also to the international trade.

(viii) Communication:

The buyers and sellers at wholesale level and retail level need the services of various agencies which communicate their message among themselves. The producers intimate to their customers about the production of goods. The intending buyers send orders to the producers for supply of goods. The services of post offices, telephones, telegraph office, telex, etc. are utilised for communicating purposes.

Combating Human Wants :

There are two stages in satisfying human wants. First stage is the production of goods and services as per the needs of the consumers and the second stage is to take these goods to them. Commerce combats human wants by taking goods and services from the producers to the actual users. The branches of commerce facilitate the movement of goods and ensure that these reach those persons who need them.

Trade is the channel through which goods move to the consumers as per their needs. Transport creates place utility in goods. The goods are taken from the place of surplus (production centres) to places of scarcity (places where needed). Since producers cannot come into direct contact with the consumers so distribution channels solve this problem.

The wholesalers, retailers, agents etc. help in transferring ownership of goods to the consumers. In the absence of such channels, it is not possible for consumers to approach large number of producers to meet their needs. The branches of commerce such as banking, insurance, warehousing provides services which facilitate the transfer of goods to consumers. Since goods cannot be produced for day to day requirements the production has to be carried in anticipation of demand.

Warehousing provides a place for the goods which will be required at a later time. Insurance is necessary to cover up any loss of goods in transit. The funds required by various persons engaged in trade are provided by banks. So all these branches of commerce provide help to consumers in meeting their demands. The communication system improves the flow of information among producers and dealers of goods and services.

The consumer may not be aware of the latest goods and services available to meet their demands. The medias of advertising and salesmanship improve the knowledge of the consumers about the type of goods which are available. The consumer’s arc better placed in making proper selection of goods with the help of these medias.

The branches of commerce are the instruments for combating human wants. The producers and users of goods and services are brought closer by bringing in various people who provide one or the other service so that consumers: are able to meet their needs.

Scope of Commerce :

Commerce has a wider scope. It deals with not only the activities related to transfer of goods and services but also with the development and promotion of trade and its allied activities. The activities relating to various branches of commerce will have to be properly understood. The study of trade will include internal and external (foreign) trade, wholesale and retail trade, mercantile agents associated with trade, etc. The foreign trade will be concerned with import and export trade and the procedures to be followed in such trade.

There are a number of hindrances in undertaking trade. These may relate to transportation of goods, raising of finances, storing of goods for future consumption etc. These hindrances necessitate the study of various modes of transport, banking activities, warehousing and insurance facilities. All these facilities will help in the development of commerce. Both internal and external trade needs the use of cheques, bills of exchange, promissory notes, hundis, etc. The knowledge of drawing negotiable instruments is essential in financing the trade.

The customers will have to be made aware of the availability of goods and services in the market. The advertisement and salesmanship will help in promoting the products. Advertisements are playing an important role in the growth of trade. So these Medias have become an indispensable part of commerce.

The communication services play a vital role in the promotion of business activities. The producers and traders need information about the terms and conditions of buying and selling, movement of goods in transit and information regarding payments. Whole of this information is sent through communication devices of post office, telephone, telex, etc.

A number of time saving office devices like computers have also become a part of commerce. In a growing industrial world, marketing has become an important area. The activities like buying, assembling, grading, branding, and packaging also need proper emphasis in commerce.

Every enterprise needs a suitable form of ownership organisation for its proper working. A choice has to be made out of the sole-proprietorship, partnership. Joint Hindu Family Firm, Joint Stock Company and cooperative societies. Some undertakings are set up as public enterprises and public utilities. Commerce involves a study of various forms of organisation and their suitability in different situations.

Trade and Commerce :

The words trade and commerce do not have the same meaning. The term ‘trade’ is related to activities concerning buying and selling. Commerce, on the other hand, is a wider term including trade also. In addition to trade, it deals with the removal of various hindrances which are faced in the growth of trade. Trade may be internal, external, wholesale or retail.

Components of Commerce :

Commerce can be classified into two categories:

(i) Trade, and

(ii) Aids to Trade.

Value of Education Essay

500 words essay on value of education.

Education is a weapon for the people by which they can live a high-quality life. Furthermore, education makes people easy to govern but at the same time it makes them impossible to be enslaved. Let us take a look at the incredible importance of education with this value of education essay.

value of education essay

                                                                                                                        Value Of Education Essay

Importance of Education

Education makes people independent. Furthermore, it increases knowledge, strengthens the mind, and forms character. Moreover, education enables people to put their potentials to optimum use.

Education is also a type of reform for the human mind. Without education, the training of the human mind would always remain incomplete.

Education makes a person an efficient decision-maker and a right thinker. Moreover, this is possible only with the help of education. This is because education acquaints an individual with knowledge of the world around him and beyond, besides teaching the individual to be a better judge of the present.

A person that receives education shall have more avenues for the life of his choice. Moreover, an educated person will be able to make decisions in the best possible manner. This is why there is such a high demand for educated people over uneducated people for the purpose of employment .

Negative Impact of Lack of Education

Without education, a person would feel trapped. One can understand this by the example of a man who is confined to a closed room, completely shut from the outside world, with no way to exit it. Most noteworthy, an uneducated person can be compared to this confined man.

Education enables a person to access the open world. Furthermore, a person without education is unable to read and write. Consequently, a person without education would remain closed to all the knowledge and wisdom an educated person can gain from books and other mediums.

The literacy rate of India stands at around 60% in comparison to more than 80% literacy rate of the rest of the world. Moreover, the female literacy rate is 54.16% in accordance with the 2001 population census. These figures certainly highlight the massive problem of lack of education in India.

To promote education, the government of India takes it as a national policy. The intention of the government is to target the very cause of illiteracy. As such, the government endeavours to eradicate illiteracy, which in turn would lead to the eradication of poverty .

The government is running various literacy programmes like the free-education programme, weekend and part-time study programme, continuing education programme, mid-day meal programme, adult literacy programme, etc. With the consistent success rate of these programmes, hopefully, things will better.

Teacher unions play an important role in determining the quality of public education, especially when they have political power. However, the effects of teacher unions on education are theoretically ambiguous and empirical evidence is limited, particularly in developing countries. This paper studies how politically powerful teacher unions affect public education, focusing on the largest corporatist teacher union in Mexico and a performance-pay program regarded as an union's patronage tool for rewarding teachers based on their electoral support. We show that the number of public secondary school teachers who got promoted in the program increased in the municipalities supporting the union-affiliated candidate during the 2006 presidential election, compared to less supportive municipalities, after that election. However, we also show that the increased promotion was not associated with improved learning outcomes. Combined with robustness checks, our results suggest that the implementation of the program was distorted when the union gained political influence through the alliance with the ruling party.

Read the college essay a Harvard grad wrote about McDonald's that landed him offers from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton

  • Cofounder of AI company Exa Jeffrey Wang wrote his college application essay about McDonald's.
  • The Harvard graduate said he wanted to make his essay authentic and entertaining.
  • Wang said he got into Yale, Harvard, and Princeton using the same essay.

Insider Today

When Jeffrey Wang was a high-school senior in Connecticut in 2014, he wasn't sure what to write about for his college application essay.

He thought about writing his essay on a subject he enjoyed at school or a project he'd worked on. But he knew others would have the same idea .

Wang told Business Insider he grew up in a middle-class family in the suburbs of Cheshire, CT. He felt he didn't have anything extraordinary to write about.

"I hadn't spent any summers abroad, and I hadn't done any fancy programs," he said.

He wanted to show his personality

He read Harry Bauld's book, 'On Writing the College Application Essay,' which made him realize college admissions officers wouldn't have time to read each essay diligently.

He said he realized his primary objective should be to entertain the admissions officer reading his essay .

"For the most part, they're just looking for character," Wang said. He decided to write about studying at McDonald's.

He told BI he thought it might pique an admissions officer's interest and illustrate his character: someone who did well at school but also hangs out at a McDonald's.

Wang said he also wanted to use his essay to challenge assumptions admissions officers might have. "I'm an Asian-American with a perfect SAT score. Maybe that looks pretty cookie-cutter on paper," he said.

Authenticity is key

The essay summarizes how Wang discovered his local McDonald's was an ideal place to study and meditate. He mentioned he liked interacting with different community members and how it was a more efficient and affordable study space than other options. The underpinning message is finding joy or peace in unusual places.

Related stories

"For the most part, it was a pretty authentic essay," Wang said, adding that he included a few "intellectual references," such as a novel and a physicist, to show the admissions officer he was smart. He said if he were to write it now, he'd leave out the big words and references.

His parents were worried the topic was too risky, but Wang said he felt confident, and if an admissions officer didn't like it — the school wasn't the right fit.

He got into Yale, Harvard, and Princeton

Growing up, Wang dreamed of attending Yale in his home state of Connecticut. He applied to Yale under early decision , using his essay about McDonald's.

Wang received an offer of financial aid from Yale, but he told BI he wanted to see if he could get more from other colleges.

He applied to Harvard, Duke, Princeton, MIT, and others with the same essay. He got into both Princeton and Harvard, and received offers of financial aid from them both. Business Insider has verified these offers with documentation.

Wang chose to study computer science at Harvard in 2015 because he said it was the best for STEM subjects, and he wanted to be further away from home.

He still tries to live authentically

Wang said if his friends read his essay now, 10 years after he submitted it, they'd recognize his personality in it. It shows his "scrappy" attitude to life, he said.

After graduating from Harvard in 2019, he started working as a software engineer for a tech company in San Francisco. He quit in 2022, and cofounded his startup Exa, a search engine for AI, in 2023.

Wang believes that prioritizing authenticity helped his success since college. "If you do things that you feel are authentic or that are right, you'll be rewarded for it," he said.
