Tim Cook: ( 04:29 ) Good morning, and thank you for joining us. I really love the incredible energy in that opening. It represents the way we feel about California. California has always been a place for people with big ambitions and big dreams, a place where people are fueled with optimism to make things better, to make things that can change the world. It is such an important part of who we are at Apple and inspires us in everything we create and do. We’re proud to call California our home. We have a lot to talk about today. Let’s get started with Apple TV+. Apple TV+ is a home to the world’s most creative storytellers and continues to expand with award-winning programming. Apple Original Series films and documentaries have now been honored with more than 130 wins and over 500 nominations in less than two years. We’re so proud this year that Apple TV+ has 35 Primetime Emmy nominations, including 20 for Ted Lasso, a record for the first season of a comedy series. And we’re just getting started. Let’s take a quick look at a few shows that are premiering this fall.

Speaker 1: ( 05:49 ) Thing will happen to you. Things that you cannot control. Raw emotion will find you. When it does, what you do will define who you are.

Speaker 2: ( 06:06 ) Our heroes reunite.

Speaker 3: ( 06:08 ) Hi.

Speaker 4: ( 06:08 ) My God.

Speaker 5: ( 06:09 ) Hi.

Speaker 6: ( 06:10 ) You okay?

Speaker 5: ( 06:10 ) Oh, yes.

Speaker 7: ( 06:11 ) I want to do something that matters.

Jon Stewart: ( 06:16 ) What the hell happened to my face?

Speaker 8: ( 06:30 ) Welcome back.

Speaker 9: ( 06:33 ) I’m going to compete with you, buddy.

Speaker 10: ( 06:38 ) Buddy?

Speaker 11: ( 06:38 ) They’re worried you can predict the future.

Speaker 12: ( 06:40 ) They’re worried people believe I can.

Jon Stewart: ( 06:44 ) My name is Jon Stewart. Welcome to the problem with Jon Stewart. We should put a comma in that.

Speaker 13: ( 06:50 ) The world needs to test us to see if it can break us.

Speaker 14: ( 06:59 ) He didn’t beat you because he’s better. He beats you because he’s smarter.

Speaker 15: ( 07:03 ) You think we’ll make it?

Speaker 16: ( 07:06 ) Not without my team.

Speaker 17: ( 07:14 ) I think I can help you. First thing I’m going to do is completely unethical. I’m going to give you a hug. I’m a hugger.

Speaker 18: ( 07:21 ) Remember to focus on the here and now. Living in the moment, it’s a gift. That’s why they call it the present y’all.

Tim Cook: ( 07:27 ) I can’t wait for all the new shows and movies coming to Apple TV+, including the second season of one of my favorites, The Morning Show, which starts this Friday. Next, we’re thrilled to share our newest product announcements, starting with iPad.

Tim Cook: ( 07:52 ) There’s no other device like iPad, and today it’s more popular and more essential than ever. And the reason it’s so popular is it’s amazing versatility. It can transform into whatever you need it to be. With advanced displays, users can literally touch their content unlike any other device. With powerful and efficient Apple design chips, iPad delivers breathtaking performance all day long.

Tim Cook: ( 08:22 ) And with fast conductivity, advanced cameras, and accessories, like the magic keyboard and Apple Pencil, iPad becomes even more versatile, extending what users can do on iPad and where they can do it. At the heart of it all is iPad iOS, delivering powerful features while maintaining the simplicity of a touch first experience. What makes iPad even more versatile are the over 1 million apps designed specifically for its large canvas. The iPad business has never been stronger. We’ve gone by over 40% this past year. We have a great lineup today with industry leading customer satisfaction, and it’s about to get even stronger. It starts with our most popular iPad, which delivers the full iPad experience at an incredibly affordable price. And today, it gets even better. This is the new iPad. And to tell you all about it, here’s Melody.

Melody Kuna: ( 09:48 ) This new iPad is packed full of updates. So let’s jump in. Under the hood is a more powerful chip, A13 Bionic, and it pushes even further than the speedy A12 from last year’s iPad. With 20% faster performance in every aspect of the chip, from the CPU and GPU, to the neural engine, A13 is leaps ahead of the competition. In fact, it makes this iPad up to three times faster than the best-selling Chromebook and up to six times faster than the best-selling Android tablet.

Melody Kuna: ( 10:22 ) And it means users will see even more responsive performance for all the things that they love to do on iPad. From everyday uses like messaging and browsing the web, to playing immersive high quality games. And as users explore more advanced apps like Adobe Fresco with its super realistic watercolors, A13 delivers the performance they need and then some. And the more powerful neural engine in A13 makes next generation machine learning experiences, like live text in iPad iOS 15, even faster.

Melody Kuna: ( 10:54 ) The upgraded image signal processor in A13 also means the rear camera captures great photos with improved auto focus in low light and better selfies from the front camera as well. Now, the front camera on iPad is essential for things like remote learning and connecting with family. And that’s why we’re so thrilled to give it a big upgrade. It’s now a 12 megapixel Ultra Wide camera that produces a huge leap in image quality and enables a super popular feature from iPad Pro. And that’s Center Stage. We’re bringing the magical Center Stage experience from iPad Pro to this new iPad.

Melody Kuna: ( 11:35 ) Enabled by the Ultra Wide front camera and the neural engine, Center Stage makes video calls more engaging by automatically detecting people and dynamically adjusting the frame as they move around or as more people join it. It works in landscape orientation and portrait. So users can enjoy center stage in all the ways they use iPad.

Melody Kuna: ( 11:55 ) Not only does Center Stage work in FaceTime, it makes video calls more natural in other popular apps like Zoom, BlueJeans, and WebEx. And it’s not just for video conferencing. Users can record, stream, and post Center Stage video in apps like Double Take, Explain Everything, and TikTok. It makes you more productive on iPad and it’s simply more fun.

Melody Kuna: ( 12:18 ) Another new feature coming to this iPad that users love is True Tone. It adjusts the display to the color temperature of a room to provide a more comfortable viewing experience. And by retaining the same popular design, this iPad supports a vast array of accessories, including the thin and light smart keyboard. And third-party keyboards like Logitech;s latest rugged combo with trackpad for schools. And of course, this iPad supports the First Generation Apple Pencil, where iPad OS makes the experience of using Apple Pencil as easy and natural as pen and paper.

Melody Kuna: ( 12:53 ) And this new iPad will ship with iPad OS 15, which is packed with great new features. For example, you can place widgets among your apps, making important information available with just a glance. New multitasking controls make it even easier to launch and use multiple apps. Quick Note gives you a fast and easy way to take notes anywhere. And the list goes on. iPad OS is so immensely capable and so easy to use. When you combine it with a beautiful display, great cameras, broad accessory support, gigabit class LTE, and all day battery life, this iPad delivers enormous value because this new iPad starts at just $329. And that’s with twice the storage, starting at 64 gigabytes. For schools, it’s even more affordable at just $299. It comes in space gray and silver and cellular models are available as well. You can order the new iPad today and it will be available next week. With the power of A13 Bionic, a new 12 megapixel Ultra Wide front camera, with Center Stage, True Tone, double the storage, and the versatility of iPad OS 15, this is a giant upgrade for our most popular iPad. Now, back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 14:17 ) We’re excited that our most popular iPad is now so much better. And now let’s talk about iPad Mini, there’s simply no other device like iPad Mini. It gives users all the power of iPad in its most portable form, which makes it indispensable for a wide range of uses. Like when it’s secured to the leg of a pilot in flight or pulled from a doctor’s lab coat to care for patients in the ER. iPad Mini is in a class of its own. And today, we’re giving our littlest iPad it’s biggest upgrade ever. Introducing the all new iPad Mini.

Katie McDonald: ( 15:15 ) As Tim said, we’re giving iPad Mini a huge set of updates. A complete redesign that puts everything our users love about iPad, right in the palm of their hand.

Katie McDonald: ( 15:28 ) The all-new enclosure features a beautiful all screen design with narrow borders and elegant rounded corners. The design is remarkably thin and light and absolutely stunning. An iPad Mini now comes in a gorgeous array of new colors, purple, pink, starlight, and space gray. And this design features a brilliant liquid retina display. With this new design, we were able to increase the screen size all the way out to 8.3 inches, while keeping the same compact footprint. With wide color, True Tone, 500 nits of brightness, and the lowest reflectivity in the industry, everything you view on iPad Mini will look great wherever you go. And delivering this edge to edge screen meant finding a new location for Touch ID.

Katie McDonald: ( 16:21 ) So just like iPad Air, we put it right in the top button of iPad Mini. Touch ID is fast, easy, and secure, whether you’re unlocking your iPad or using Apple Pay. iPad Mini is already the fastest device of its kind. And the performance of the new iPad Mini is simply remarkable. Compared to the previous generation, the new iPad mini sees a 40% jump in CPU performance and a whopping 80% leap in GPU performance. So whether you’re using ForeFlight to navigate your flight plan with live wind speed overlays or playing the graphically rich game, Star Wars Hunters online with your friends, the new iPad Mini will power right through it with ease.

Katie McDonald: ( 17:13 ) And the neural engine for powerful machine learning applications also takes a big leap forward on the new Mini, increasing performance by up to two times over the previous generation. Combined with the CPU and the GPU, the neural engine enables apps to deliver next level experiences, like the new Translate app in iPad OS 15, which can automatically translate a conversation in real time. The performance of the new iPad Mini is on a whole new level.

Katie McDonald: ( 17:47 ) And we know that iPad users rely on ultra fast connections. Well, the most mobile iPad is about to get a lot faster and even more versatile. iPad Mini now has a USB-C port. So you get the same great USB-C functionality that we brought to iPad Air, which means it’s up to 10 times faster than its predecessor. So iPad Mini can now connect to a vast ecosystem of USB-C accessories, which is great. Whether you’re a photographer who needs to connect to cameras when shooting on location or a doctor in a remote area using Butterfly to conduct an ultrasound. And when users are on the go, it’s crucial to have access to the fastest cellular connections. And that’s why we’re bringing 5G to iPad Mini. Download speeds can be up to 3.5 gigabits per second. This is key when you need to stay connected on the go, like when technicians use Splunk AR on-site to access real-time data, performance analytics, and complex schematics, or if you’re using SharePlay to take a master class with your friends, 5G keeps you connected.

Katie McDonald: ( 19:04 ) Next, let’s talk about the cameras and audio. Users rely on iPad Mini for FaceTime, taking photos and videos, and experiencing AR. So we’ve updated both the front and back cameras. The back camera now features a 12 megapixel sensor with focus pixels and a larger aperture to capture sharp, vivid photos. And we added a True Tone flash to Mini for improved photos in low light. With a new ISP, users will see enhanced photos with Smart HDR, which improves image quality by recovering details in shadows and highlights. And now with the ability to record in 4K, iPad Mini becomes your mobile movie studio.

Katie McDonald: ( 19:48 ) On the front, iPad Mini features the new 12 megapixel Ultra Wide camera, which means it also supports Center Stage. As Melody mentioned, this has been a huge hit on iPad Pro and now it’s coming to iPad Mini. And iPad Mini also features a new speaker system with stereo in landscape. Great for listening to your favorite playlist or doing an Apple Fitness+ workout in your hotel room.

Katie McDonald: ( 20:18 ) An iPad Mini’s versatility is further enhanced by its amazing accessories. There’s a new set of slim SmartFolio covers in beautiful coordinating colors that compliment the new iPad Mini finishes, perfect for expressing your personal style. And now, iPad Mini supports the amazing Second Generation Apple Pencil, which magnetically attaches to the side of iPad Mini. So it’s always connected, charged, and with you. Apple Pencil transforms iPad Mini into your digital sketchbook. We’re so excited about the new iPad Mini. Let’s see it in action.

Katie McDonald: ( 22:30 ) With it’s all new design and huge boost in performance, the new iPad mini starts at just $499 and it will be available in both wifi and cellular configurations. You can order it today and it will be available next week.

Katie McDonald: ( 22:46 ) So this is the all new iPad mini, featuring a brilliant liquid retina display, super fast performance, new cameras front and back, Center Stage, 5G, support for Apple Pencil and all new colors. With all of these new features, this is by far the most powerful and versatile iPad mini ever.

Katie McDonald: ( 23:16 ) And with both the new iPad and iPad mini, we continue our commitment to the environment. Both of these iPad models are built with a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure. And this marks a milestone for iPad, every single iPad in the lineup now features a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure. This is just one of the many ongoing efforts we have underway to reduce the environmental impact of our products. Now, back to Tim.

Tim Cook: ( 23:44 ) Whit the even more capable new iPad and the phenomenal new iPad mini, our iPad lineup is the best it’s ever been. Next, let’s talk about Apple Watch. Apple Watch is an indispensable daily companion that keeps you connected to the people and things you care about most. It encourages you to be active and get more out of your workouts, and it monitors your health, helping you live a better day. I am so inspired by the impact we’ve had on people’s lives, and we continue to push the boundaries of what Apple Watch can do. To tell you about what’s next, here’s Jeff.

Jeff Williams: ( 24:37 ) Being more active is one of the best ways to stay healthy, and it’s been at the heart of Apple Watch since the beginning. Well today, we’re adding new features to Apple Watch for everyone who rides a bike.

Jeff Williams: ( 24:51 ) Watch OS8 will detect when you begin riding and remind you to start a workout, and it will automatically pause and resume if you stop temporarily. And Watch OS8 adds fall detection to cycling by sensing the unique motion and impact of falls while riding a bike. And Apple Watch now better supports e-bikes with an improved workout algorithm that more accurately calculates calories.

Jeff Williams: ( 25:15 ) These cycling updates join all the other great additions in Watch OS8, like the mindfulness app and Memories and Photos. And this year we focused on making these features and everything you do on Watch bigger and better. Introducing the next generation of Apple Watch.

Jeff Williams: ( 25:58 ) [inaudible 00:25:58] This is the incredible Apple Watch Series 7. It takes all the great features of Apple Watch and combines them with our largest and most advanced display ever. The new retina display on Series 7 has nearly 20% more screen area than Series 6, and it’s an even bigger jump over Series 3 with over 50% more screen area.

Jeff Williams: ( 26:35 ) The Series 7 display has been completely re-engineered to reduce the borders to just 1.7 millimeters, that’s 40% thinner than on Series 6. It’s an incredible innovation that maximizes the screen area while barely changing the dimensions of the watch itself. And the shape of the watch has also been refined, both the case and the display of Series 7 have softer, more rounded corners. The new display refracts light at its edges for a subtle wraparound effect, creating a seamless integration with the curvature of the case. And it’s also up to 70% brighter indoors when your wrist is down, making it even easier to discretely check the time. This new display is an industry first, and we fully optimized the user interface for it. Here’s Lauren to tell you more.

Lauren Braun: ( 27:26 ) Across the user interface on Series 7 buttons have been redesigned and enlarged to compliment the size and shape of the new display. Like in Stopwatch, Activity, and Alarms, making them even easier to tap. It can also fit nearly 50% more text on screen than Series 6. This helps you read messages and emails with a lot less scrolling.

Lauren Braun: ( 27:51 ) Series 7 also features new ways to input text. There’s a full keyboard that you can either tap or slide from letter to letter with Quick Path, which uses machine learning to predict the word you’re typing. There are also new watch faces designed specifically for Series 7. The dynamic contour face animates on wrist raise, pushing the dial right out to the edge. And a new modular face leverages the extra screen area with two large data rich center complications. All of these improvements give Series 7, the best user experience of any Apple Watch.

Lauren Braun: ( 28:33 ) We also improved durability, which is another essential aspect of Apple Watch. Series 7 is the most durable Apple Watch we’ve ever built. It has our most crack resistant front crystal, thanks to a stronger and more robust geometry. It’s also the first Apple Watch to have IP6X certification, so you don’t have to worry about wearing it and dusty environments. And of course, it’s still swim- proof with WR50 water resistance.

Lauren Braun: ( 29:03 ) With our best ever durability, you can take Series 7 anywhere you want to go, and use it all day long with the same great 18 hour battery life. Series 7 also has an improved charging experience. It charges up to 33% faster than Series 6. With an updated charging architecture and new fast charging USB-C cable, it takes just 45 minutes to go from 0 to 80% charge. And eight minutes of charging is enough for eight hours of sleep tracking. We think customers will love the optimized user interface, best ever durability and faster charging of Series 7. Now back to Jeff.

Jeff Williams: ( 29:48 ) Series 7 will be available in five new aluminum colors, midnight, starlight, green, blue, and product red. It will also be available in silver, graphite and gold stainless steel as well as natural and space black titanium. Apple Watch Nike models feature a new graphic sport loop and Nike Bounce watch face. And, there’s a new Apple Watch Hermes Circuit H leather band with matching face, plus an elegant new Double Tour band.

Jeff Williams: ( 30:17 ) Now of course, bands are a great way to customize your Apple Watch for any activity or occasion. So we’ve added new colors across our most popular styles, and Series 7 is compatible with all existing bans. We’ve designed Series 7 with the environment in mind. All aluminum watch cases are made with 100% recycled metal and all magnets in Series 7 use 100% recycled rare earth elements.

Jeff Williams: ( 30:42 ) So here’s our 2021 Apple Watch lineup. Series 3 remains at the great entry price of $199. Apple Watch SE starts at $279, and Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399. Series 7 will be available later this fall and we can’t wait for you to try it. Here’s another look at some of the amazing capabilities of Apple Watch Series 7.

Speaker 19: ( 31:12 ) To live is to ask the big questions, like, why are we here? What is our purpose? And whoa, how fast was that serve? Ninety-eight miles per hour. Nice. But I was thinking about… Wow, I’m sorry. Hi there. How far was that drive? 250 yards!

Speaker 19: ( 31:33 ) Okay, getting back to my point. I mean, haven’t you ever wondered-

Speaker 20: ( 31:40 ) How far have I gone?

Siri: ( 31:40 ) Five miles. Average speed 12.4 miles per hour.

Speaker 19: ( 31:40 ) This is how far are you’ve gone, but I was actually thinking… Wait, are you taking an ECG here? And you’re taking one here? Are you taking an ECG next to a pinata? Heads up!

Speaker 19: ( 31:54 ) Oh, hi. We’re surfing. Wow. That’s just, that’s just impressive. Wait, how many waves you get? Fifteen waves?

Speaker 19: ( 32:03 ) Oh, good morning. How’d you sleep? Why are you checking your blood oxygen level? Oh, that’s why.

Speaker 19: ( 32:13 ) Okay, let’s get back to the big questions like, are the mysteries of the universe out of reach or can we discover the answers through the power of meditation? Oh, come on now! You know you’re levitating, right?

Speaker 19: ( 32:25 ) Sorry, don’t mind me. Anyway, there are questions and it seems like your watch has all the answers, which is cheating.

Jeff Williams: ( 32:34 ) So, that’s Apple Watch Series 7. It has the largest and most advanced display ever, an optimized UI with new keyboard and watch faces, best ever durability, fast charging, new colors, and all the great features of watch OS8. Series 7 is simply our best Apple Watch yet, and there’s no better way to stay connected, active, and healthy. And a great way to stay active and healthy with Apple Watch is with Apple Fitness+. I’ll hand it over to Jay to give you an update.

Skiing and snowboarding are fantastic exercise and a fun way to hang out with your family and friends. So we’re introducing workouts to get ready for snow season. We designed these workouts with Ted Ligety, two time Olympic gold medalist, five time world champion and father of three. This program contains workouts that will build up your strength, help you stay on the slopes longer and make it your best snow season ever. Now back to Jay.

Jay Blahnik: ( 36:51 ) For many people, fitness is more fun when it’s a shared experience, like taking a class together or working out with a buddy. We wanted to make it easier for you to work out with the people who motivate you, no matter where they are in the world. So we’re excited to introduce Fitness+ Group Workouts, powered by SharePlay. From a group message thread or FaceTime call, navigate to the fitness app and get started. Tim Cook: ( 41:55 ) This is iPhone 13. To tell you more, here’s Kianne.

Cayenne: ( 42:24 ) Let’s take a closer look at, iPhone 13, starting with design. It has the sleek, flat edge design that people love. It’s also incredibly durable with our exclusive ceramic shield front, tougher than any smartphone glass, and has industry leading IP 68 water resistance. iPhone 13 has a new look for the advanced dual camera system, with the lenses arranged diagonally. The aerospace grade aluminum frame is beautifully formed and really shows off five new colors, an all new pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT) RED. On the front the true depth camera system has been re-engineered to provide more display area. Everything inside, including face ID, the most secure facial authentication in a smartphone, fits into a space that’s 20% smaller. iPhone 13 is designed with the environment in mind, using many recycled materials. For example, these antenna lines use up-cycled plastic water bottles, an industry first.

Cayenne: ( 43:36 ) Under the hood, iPhone 13 has been completely rearchitected to make room for new technologies and a bigger battery. This beautiful design is the same across two sizes, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Both feature a more advanced super retina XDR display. It’s 28% brighter, up to 800 nits. Brilliant for viewing, even when you’re outside. For HDR content, like photos and videos, the peak brightness is higher at 1200 nits. And you can enjoy the pixel precision brightness for longer, thanks to the displays, improved power efficiency. You’ll see true blacks in games, photos, and videos with the incredible contrast ratio of our OLED display. This new brighter super retina XDR display delivers an immersive viewing experience with support for Dolby Vision HDR 10 and HLG. Now let’s talk about the chip that powers iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Frankly, the competition is still playing catch up to our chips, not just from last year, but even from two years ago. And today we’re extending our lead with A15 Bionic. Here’s Hope to tell you all about it.

Hope: ( 45:08 ) Our silicon is the engine of iPhone. With A15 Bionic, we have innovations across the entire system to deliver more performance and power efficiency. At its foundation, A15 uses five nanometer technology, which enables us to include nearly 15 billion transistors. You’ll absolutely fly through demanding workloads smoothly and efficiently, thanks to a powerful new six core CPU with two high performance. And four high efficiency cores. We’ve increased the performance of our CPU’s dedicated machine learning accelerators, that power experiences such as advanced text-to-speech in Siri and on-device processing of directions in maps. It’s the fastest CPU in any smartphone, up to 50% faster than the leading competition. For graphics intensive tasks like advanced games, A15 Bionic features our latest 4-core GPU, enabling more eye-catching visuals and lighting effects. It delivers up to 30% faster graphics versus the leading competition. And we continue to push the limits of machine learning with the new 16-core Neural Engine that is perfect for ML tasks.

Hope: ( 46:24 ) It’s capable of an astounding 15.8 trillion operations per second. We designed our Neural Engine together with our camera hardware and software teams. This unique vision and integration brings to life leading capabilities in video and image processing. This means faster ML computations for experiences like live LiveText with iOS 15, point your camera at texts on the go and instantly take action like buying tickets or getting directions. The ML advancements across our entire chip will empower developers to do even more in their apps, like swing vision, which can smoothly run powerful core ML and AR models on A15 Bionic, for real-time shop tracking, video analysis, and remote coaching. PeakVisor helps you navigate the outdoors to identify mountains and explore detail rich 3D maps while hiking. And Seek uses a machine learning model trained by over 20 million photos, to instantly identify plants and animals around you and all the processing is done on device. A15 is a powerhouse. In addition to core performance improvements, there’s a new display engine, new video encoder and decoder, and twice the system cache. There’s nothing in the world like this chip. Back to Cayenne.

Cayenne: ( 47:54 ) A15 Bionic also powers the amazing camera system on iPhone 13. It combines our powerful cameras, next generation image signal processor and computational photography to create our most advanced dual camera system. The all new wide camera lets you take stunning shots in any situation. Like this photo full of color and texture. It gathers 47% more light for less noise and brighter results in your photos and videos. This is enabled by larger 1.7 micron pixels that capture more light and a wide f/1.6 aperture. It’s the biggest sensor we’ve ever put in our dual camera system. iPhone 12 Pro Max introduced an amazing advanced technology, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and incredibly we are bringing this to iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Here’s a light photo from the new wide camera with censorship OIS. The larger sensor captures nearly 50% more light, hard to believe this photo was taken in a dark room with just a little light coming through a window.

Cayenne: ( 49:09 ) Night mode shots are even more impressive. Capture times are shorter too, for sharper images of your subjects and fine details. We’ve also custom designed a new Ultra Wide camera that will reveal more of the dark areas with less noise. Like you see here in the walls and ceilings. Capturing fun creative perspectives is easy with the Ultra Wide and now it’s even better on iPhone 13. Now let’s switch to video, iPhone already has the highest quality video in a smartphone. And iPhone 13 brings a brand new feature, Cinematic mode. Now over to Johnny to tell you more.

Johnny: ( 49:51 ) Filmmakers have used focus changes to tell engaging stories for decades. It’s a technique called rack focus, that requires skill planning and creative vision. You’ve seen rack focus used in all your favorite films. It brings a whole new dimension to storytelling. Well we’re bringing this capability to iPhone, in a simple and intuitive way, so you can capture cinema style moments even if you aren’t a professional filmmaker. And guess what the movie clip you just saw was shot on iPhone and we’d love to show you more.

Johnny: ( 51:44 ) (movie playing). It’s remarkable and so easy to use. Just start recording and cinematic mode will hold focus on the subject, even when they’re moving. Focus transitions happen automatically in real time, like from one subject to another. Cinematic mode anticipates when a subject is about to enter the frame and intelligently racks focus to them when they do. And when a subject gazes away from the camera, iPhone itself changes focus and then back, to create these automatic focus changes. We extensively studied the art of cinematography and the creative choices directors of photography make to guide the viewer’s attention. We combine these learnings with computational algorithms so you can effortlessly create cinema great videos. For more creative control, you can tap to shift focus at any time, tap again to lock and track focus on the subject. Cinematic mode shoots in Dolby Vision HDR. This is enabled by your Apple custom sensor and the incredible power of A15 Bionic, which grades each frame in Dolby Vision live while you are recording. And that’s cinematic mode. Now back to Cayenne.

Cayenne: ( 53:03 ) iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have advanced new camera systems with sensor-shift OIS, fantastic low-light performance, and cinematic mode also on the front true depth camera. Next let’s turn to 5G. Millions and millions of iPhone users are already experiencing 5G every day for super fast downloads and uploads, lower latency, and new experiences on the go. And on iPhone 13, we’ve innovated further on custom design antennaes and radio components that let us add more bands, so iPhone 13 works on 5G with the latest speeds and in more places. The world is moving quickly to 5G. We’re collaborating with more carrier partners for the best call quality, performance, coverage, and battery life. By the end of the year, we will double 5G support to over 200 carriers in 60 countries and regions. That means you can benefit from 5G in more places than ever to binge watch your favorite shows together using SharePlay on Apple TV + and even more streaming partners for video and music.

Cayenne: ( 54:19 ) You can be ultra competitive in multiplayer games, share surprise greetings from a celebrity in high rez over Cameo, or take the sound at any live event to a whole new level with mixed halo. 5G is taking over and iPhone 13 is ready with the best 5G experience.

Cayenne: ( 54:40 ) Now let’s talk about battery life, which is really important to our users. iPhone 13 has a faster chip, faster 5G speeds, a brighter OLED display, and the most advanced dual camera system ever in an iPhone. And with all these new capabilities, the iPhone 13 lineup has better battery life. On iPhone 13 mini most users will experience an hour and a half longer in their day than with iPhone 12 mini. And on iPhone 13 two and a half hours longer than iPhone 12 for incredible all day battery life. This amazing battery life is delivered by A15 Bionic, more power efficient components, a bigger battery, and power optimizations from our deep hardware and software integration, like smart data mode, which intelligently conserves battery life by automatically shifting your iPhone to LTE when 5G speeds aren’t needed.

Cayenne: ( 55:42 ) We also look at every opportunity to improve privacy. With iPhone and iOS privacy is built in from the beginning. With iOS 15, Siri uses on device speech recognition, meaning your Siri audio requests do not leave your iPhone by default. Intelligent tracking prevention, now prevents trackers from profiling you using your IP address and mail privacy protection hides your IP address and prevents senders from learning about your mail activity. Another huge benefit of owning an iPhone is the vast ecosystem that extends what iPhone can do. That includes MagSafe, which we introduced last fall and has been a hit. From multi chargers and swiveling charger stands, to cases, wallets, tripods, and car mounts, along with our own accessories for charging, like the MagSafe battery pack. For iPhone 13, we have leather, silicone, and clear cases in stunning new colors and engineered to work perfectly with MagSafe.

Cayenne: ( 56:48 ) We also have a new MagSafe leather wallet that supports Find My. You can now be notified of the last known location where your wallet was separated from your iPhone. iPhone 13 is loaded with new technologies, including cinematic mode, A15 Bionic that’s faster than the competition, our most advanced dual camera system with sensor-shift OIS, longer battery life, 5G, and so much more.

Cayenne: ( 57:19 ) With all this iPhone 13 still starts at just $699. We also have some fantastic offers from Apple and our partners, including up to $700 off in the US when you trade in a qualifying iPhone. And we’re increasing the starting capacity to 128 gigabytes for double the storage and adding a new 512 gigabyte option. iPhone 13 is impressively powerful. Let’s see it in action.

Cayenne: ( 59:28 ) (video playing) Now back to Tim.

Tim: ( 59:47 ) We are so excited for iPhone 13, with all of its power and capability, we can’t wait to see what our customers will do with it. And we’re not done yet. Our pro lineup pushes the limits with our most advanced technologies for our users who want the very best iPhone, best in class performance, best in class camera experience, great durability, larger displays, an incredible design. This year, we build on that in a major way. Let’s take a look at our most Pro iPhone ever.

Tim: ( 01:00:31 ) ( video playing) This is iPhone 13 Pro. To tell you more here’s Jaws.

Jaws: ( 01:01:33 ) iPhone 13 Pro features out most pro design. With exceptional materials, like these surgical grade stainless steel bands. Each band goes through a physical vapor deposition process to create an Apple custom finish that is so elegant yet incredibly resistant to abrasion and corrosion. iPhone 13 Pro comes in four striking finishes. A rich deep graphite, gorgeous gold, beautiful silver, and this all new Sierra blue. The Sierra blue required an entirely new process using multiple layers of nanometer scale metallic ceramics applied across the surface for a stunning and very durable finish.

Jaws: ( 01:02:13 ) iPhone 13 Pro has a newly designed front, with a true depth camera system that’s 20% smaller. On the back you’ll see our incredible new camera system with beautiful stainless steel trim that perfectly surrounds the sapphire crystal lenses of each of our three new cameras. And a beautiful textured matte glass that feels great and shows off the stunning color. On the front it has our incredible ceramic shield that is tougher than any smartphone glass. It also has industry leading IP 68 water resistance. On the inside, it’s been completely redesigned to support our latest pro technologies, including the all new camera system, incredible new display and a bigger battery. iPhone 13 Pro also supports MagSafe and the ever expanding ecosystem of really cool new accessories.

Jaws: ( 01:03:02 ) … Ever expanding ecosystem of really cool new accessories. And it’s joined by the larger iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Jaws: ( 01:03:07 ) Now, let’s talk about performance and the powerful, new, A15 Bionic. As you heard from Hope, A15 Bionic features a CPU with two new high-performance cores, and four new high efficiency cores, and a faster neural engine, as well as our new ISP, which provides improved noise reduction, and tone mapping.

Jaws: ( 01:03:27 ) And for these Pro models, A15 Bionic includes our most powerful graphics ever, with a new five core GPU. It provides up to 50% faster graphics performance than the leading competition. In fact, iPhone 13 Pro has the fastest graphics performance in any smartphone ever. Great for high performance gaming, and our most powerful camera features, like apple ProRaw, and 4k Dolby Vision video. And the A15 Bionic chips, new five core GPU, and custom display engine, combine with an amazing new display, and takes the iPhone experience even further.

Jaws: ( 01:04:04 ) This year, we’re proud to introduce an entirely new, Super Retina XDR display. With a new, more efficient Owlet panel, the display now supports up to a thousand nits peak outdoor brightness. That’s 25% higher than last year. And for the first time, we’re bringing ProMotion to iPhone. With our latest technology, this ProMotion display can refresh from as low as 10 Hertz, to as high as 120 Hertz. ProMotion is designed to respond dynamically, and match your content. The advanced custom architecture produces fast frame rates when you need them, and preserves battery life when you don’t.

Jaws: ( 01:04:41 ) We also optimized iOS to take full advantage of this. For example, when swiping between apps, or scrolling, the system adapts the frame rates to precisely match the speed of the user’s finger. The result is an incredibly responsive experience, that is fast and fluid. Of course, ProMotion is also great for apps, providing more responsive inputs, smoother graphics, and more precise gameplay. We brought in a few developers to see what they could do with it, and the results were amazing.

Joe Lee: ( 01:05:10 ) All right, let’s go. I work on a title called Mobile Feature Revolution.

Kyle Webster: ( 01:05:15 ) I am the Senior Design Evangelist for Adobe. I work on Adobe Fresco.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:05:21 ) And I am the founder, and CTO, of Super Evil Megacorp. Catalyst Black is really a rich and detailed world, and ProMotion’s adaptive frame rate is really unique. Because of the 120 frames per second, you can get perfect response time. It’s about the refresh rate. It’s about the controls. It’s almost like your fingers are glued to the screen.

Kyle Webster: ( 01:05:39 ) A device like this changes the game for artists everywhere. With ProMotion, it means that I’m actually seeing the pixels move in real time. There’s absolutely no lag.

Joe Lee: ( 01:05:50 ) Super Retina XDR display allows the gamers to see further into the distance, and catch more details in surroundings. So, we have all these great characters. They need to look better than real.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:06:02 ) The iPhone 13 Pro has one of the most powerful mobile GPUs ever created. And with that, we can really bring all these graphics features to a mobile device.

Joe Lee: ( 01:06:10 ) I like that part.

Tommy Krul: ( 01:06:11 ) The incredible combination of A15 Bionic, ProMotion, and 5G, makes the iPhone 13 Pro the most powerful smartphone in the world, or any world for that matter.

Joe Lee: ( 01:06:19 ) The A15 Bionic, ProMotion, 5G [foreign language 01:06:23].

Jaws: ( 01:06:27 ) The new Super Retina XDR display, with ProMotion, comes in two great sizes, 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch. And the custom design Owlet panels work across different lighting conditions, and content types, maintaining incredible color accuracy, and contrast.

Jaws: ( 01:06:42 ) Now, let’s talk about the all new iPhone 13 Pro Camera System. This is our biggest camera advancement ever. To tell you more about it, here’s Louis.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:04 ) iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max introduce an all new camera system, starting with the new 77 millimeter telephoto camera, with 3X optical zoom, a new ultra wide camera, with auto-focus, and a larger F 1.8 aperture, with a 92% improvement in low light. And a new wide camera that has a larger F 1.5 aperture, and 1.9 micron pixels, for our largest sensor ever, with up to 2. 2 times improvement in low light.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:32 ) So, you’ll get beautiful photos in any situation. The larger sensor of the wide offers more light gathering, for less noise and faster shutter speeds, and even longer brackets when shooting night mode photos with a tripod. The new 77 millimeter telephoto enables beautiful, classic, portraiture photos, and 3X optical zoom, for photos and videos, for a total 6X optical zoom range on iPhone 13 Pro.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:07:58 ) With the new ultra wide, low-light photos are brighter and sharper, with more details, like you see in her dress, or on the couch. The ultra wide camera also enables something entirely new on iPhone, Macro photography.

Louis Dudley: ( 01:08:11 ) Macro photography typically uses a special lens that can focus at close distances. The new ultra wide lens design and auto-focus system enable incredibly sharp focus, and can magnify subjects with a minimum distance of two centimeters. So, you can get detailed close-ups, like of this beautiful red daisy, the cells in this leaf, or the water droplets on this mushroom. And for the first time, all of the cameras, including the telephoto, have night mode, which is made possible by advanced computational photography. With high integration between hardware and software, our cameras can do even more. To tell you all about it, here’s Rebecca.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:08:54 ) When tuning the iPhone Camera System, we shoot review thousands of photos. Analyzing all of those photos allows us to deliver features like smart HDR4, which automatically brings improved color, contrast, and lighting, for each subject in a group photo, including for challenging shots like this. Our software and ISP adjust for different lighting, and we’ve made improvements for skin tones, so everyone looks even better.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:09:19 ) We’re also introducing a way to personalize your iPhone Camera with Photographic Styles. This is a feature that pro photographers are going to love. Photographic Styles bring your individual preferences right into our advanced image pipeline, applying local edits, like a photo editor would, but in real time, as we run through the photo. That means, we get all the benefits of our multi frame, image processing pipeline, with the ability to customize it, in a way you can never achieve with a simple filter.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:09:49 ) Select from one of our four default styles before you shoot. For example, Rich Contrast for a bolder look, or Vibrant for a punchier look. Each uses our deep semantic understanding to intelligently apply the right amount of adjustments to different parts of the photo, while preserving skin tones. You can also customize the styles further, with Tone and Warmth, which combine multiple attributes for a look that’s all your own.

Rebecca Puols: ( 01:10:16 ) Styles works across scenes and subject types. You don’t need to set it every time, so you can define your style, and use it across your photos. And that’s Photographic Styles, coming into iPhone 13 Pro, and we’re excited to bring it to iPhone 13 as well. Now, back to Jaws.

Jaws: ( 01:10:35 ) The all new Pro Camera System, combined with the power of computational photography, will allow users to capture beautiful images better than ever before. The new iPhone 13 Pro Camera System also provides our most advanced video features. The all new camera system, along with Dolby Vision HDR recording, produces incredible pro level video. So, we asked two time Academy Award winning director, Kathryn Bigelow, and Oscar nominated cinematographer, Greg Frazier, to show us what they can do with the power of iPhone 13 Pro.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:11:08 ) Look up.

Speaker 40: ( 01:11:09 ) Light please.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:11:29 ) It’s a completely integrated process now. The iPhone doesn’t require any ancillary pieces of equipment. Like it become still, and she turns slowly. It’s the dawning realization. I thought it was a good challenge. You know, these are all genres I love, and it’s so great to kind of parachute in, do a deep dive with the iPhone. And with so much accessibility, I think all pretension tends to disappear. And so, it makes the set, and the filming process, much less apprehensive.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:12:12 ) There was no limitations to what I could do with this particular camera. Whereas normally, everybody gets so precious about a camera… And lens looks so expensive, or it’s so fragile. One of the things that the iPhone couldn’t do up until now, was to create an idea of depth from a lens. With Cinematic mode, what’s exciting is, we can actually choose focus later. To me, that’s really bringing it up to the professional film cameras.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:12:50 ) We can actually go ahead and make these stories, and make these films, using the tools on this iPhone. I believe that with the advent, and with the addition of Cinematic mode, we’re going to very soon see filmmakers make films in a different way, which is exciting.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:08 ) It might even verse a brand new genre.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:11 ) I have no doubt it will, just given the size, and given the ability to move this camera.

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:15 ) Exactly.

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:16 ) It will change the language of cinema…

Kathryn Bigelow: ( 01:13:18 ) … Of cinema…

Greg Frazier: ( 01:13:18 ) … In a very positive way.

Speaker 40: ( 01:13:46 ) Cutting.

Jaws: ( 01:13:50 ) Everything you just saw, including the behind the scenes’ footage, was shot on iPhone 13 Pro. With major updates across the wide, ultra wide, and telephoto cameras, it’s an incredible device for filmmaking. The new ultra wide camera enables amazing macro slow-mo videos, thanks to the new lens design. And the new 3X telephoto allows you to zoom even closer to the action, and offers a great new focal length for video.

Jaws: ( 01:14:16 ) This is really awesome when using our all new Cinematic mode, which uses machine learning and disparity, to create a depth map that’s built into the video. So, you can change the depth effect, including the level of BOCA, and where the focus is applied, even after the capture. This is another iPhone first, as iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 Pro, are the only smartphones that can do this.

Jaws: ( 01:14:40 ) We also have another Pro video feature coming later this year, and that’s ProRes video. ProRes offers exceptionally high color fidelity, and more efficient encoding, for use in pro video editing apps, like Final Cut Pro. That’s why it’s widely used by video editors as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcast. A15 Bionic adds hardware acceleration for ProRes, and in combination with our advanced video encoders and decoders, as well as our faster file system, and flash storage pipeline, you can now record up to 4k at 30 frames per second in ProRes, right in the camera app. iPhone 13 Pro is the only smartphone to provide an end to end pro workflow, allowing you to record, and edit, in ProRes, or Dolby Vision. This will transform filmmaking with a device that can simply slip into your pocket.

Jaws: ( 01:15:33 ) Next, let’s talk about battery life. This is our most pro iPhone ever, with our fastest performance, most advanced display, and most powerful camera system ever in an iPhone. Thanks to the efficiency of the A15 Bionic, and iOS15, as well as a larger battery, iPhone 13 Pro delivers incredible, all day battery life. iPhone 13 Pro lasts more than one and a-half hours longer in your day, than iphone 12 Pro. And iPhone 13 Pro Max will last more than two and a-half hours longer than iPhone 12 Pro Max. That means iPhone 13 Pro Max has the longest battery life ever in an iPhone.

Jaws: ( 01:16:12 ) The entire iPhone 13 lineup has been carefully designed to minimize its impact on the environment. We redesigned the packaging to eliminate the outer plastic wrap, saving 600 metric tons of plastic. This brings us closer to our goal of completely removing plastic from all of our packaging. iPhone uses 100% recycled, rare earth elements and magnets, and 100% recycled tin in the solder of the main logic board.

Jaws: ( 01:16:38 ) So, that’s iPhone 13 Pro, with our most advanced technologies, an all new camera system with three new cameras, ProRes video, Cinematic mode, the new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, A15 Bionic with five core GPU, 5G, Mag safe, and incredible durability features. These I-phones push the boundaries for what’s possible in a smartphone.

Jaws: ( 01:17:02 ) Even with all this incredible technology, iPhone 13 Pro still starts at $999, and iphone 13 Pro Max still starts at $1099. We also have amazing offers from apple, and our partners, including up to $1000 off a new s, when you trade in a qualifying iPhone.

Jaws: ( 01:17:20 ) And this year, we’re introducing a new 1 terabyte storage option. This is a great addition for our pro iPhone users. The 1 terabyte joins our 128, 256, and 512 gigabytes storage options. You can pre-order all four new models of iPhone 13 family this Friday, September 17th. And they will all be available on September 24th. So, here’s our new iPhone lineup, including iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and iPhone se, starting at just $399. Now, back to Tim.

The pandemic’s time elasticity vortex may have you constantly wondering what day it is , but there’s at least one certainty in gadget land each fall: Apple will launch a new iPhone . Apple is hosting its annual fall hardware event this morning, and, as usual, the entire tech industry (and anyone who’s been thinking it’s time to buy a new iPhone) will be watching—online—to get a sense of how Apple is both responding to and advancing trends in consumer tech.

We know one thing for sure heading into the media event: There will be a new iPhone in at least two variations. (TBD on whether it will be called “iPhone 13”—maybe Apple will realize that the numeral naming convention is starting to get a bit ridiculous.) An early report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that some of the biggest enhancements to the new iPhone will be camera features, including a higher-quality video format, a bokeh effect for video capture, and “smarter” filters. Unsurprisingly, the new iPhones will also be powered by Apple’s newest custom chip, and they will finally catch up to Samsung’s flagship phones in terms of screen refresh rate. And an investors’ note from Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives has suggested that the high-end “Pro” model of the new iPhone might have a whopping 1-terabyte storage option.

Other rumor roundups have pointed to a redesigned iPad mini, as well as new AirPods, as part of the fall hardware launch. The invitation to the virtual event included a reference to “California streaming” and contained an image that suggested augmented reality might be a part of the event. (There was even an AR easter egg hidden in the invite.)

Some of the more significant news might be around what’s not immediately available for preorder this week: the Apple Watch . The Apple Watch Series 7 will reportedly be delayed due to production issues, though some reports have also indicated that the hurdles may be cleared in time for today's event. A production delay on a well-established product suggests that the Series 7 watch, whenever it launches, might include a significant design change or the inclusion of new features that go beyond run-of-the-mill activity tracking. But it also shows that Apple is not immune to the manufacturing troubles or supply constraints affecting the rest of the consumer tech industry.

Apple’s fall hardware event is also happening at a time of reckoning for the company. It has weathered the pandemic remarkably well so far, as have many tech companies, with consumers clamoring for the smartphones, tablets, laptops, and web services that enable remote working, learning, exercising, unwinding, and connecting. But Apple’s sheer bigness and influence in our lives has also come into sharper focus this year, with the Epic trial , the company’s presence in China , its controversial decision (and then walk-back ) to scan iCloud photos, and even unrest within its US workforce. An iPhone launch is no longer just an iPhone launch. Then again, for a certain set of consumers who are just wondering if they should get a new iPhone … it’s an iPhone launch.

Apple's presentation will start at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific, on Tuesday, September 14 . You can stream it in the player above. You can also view the stream on Apple’s website or on the company’s YouTube channel .

You can also watch it in the Apple TV app. Now that Apple has its own streaming service, it also has a dedicated video app on mobile devices, Apple TV boxes, Roku boxes, and in some smart TVs. You can open that app and find the option to stream today's event whether or not you subscribe to the monthly Apple TV+ streaming service.

We'd recommend launching the stream on your television using either your YouTube app or the Apple TV app; virtual events still aren’t quite as exciting as attending in-person ones, but watching it on a larger screen at least makes it feel like an event. Besides, if you watch it on your television, that frees up your laptop for tweeting snarkily into the Apple enthusiast Twitterverse (soon, no doubt, to become the “metaverse”).

Expect Apple's presentation to last anywhere from 60 minutes to two hours. And, of course, once the event ends, come back to WIRED.com. We’ll be rounding up the most significant news and offering our analysis of the event.

5 Big Takeaways From Apple’s iPhone 13 Event, Including 1 Thing iPhone Users Should Do Right Now

new iphone 13 presentation

O n Tuesday, Apple hosted another virtual presentation, showcasing both the beautiful scenery of California and a slew of new consumer products, including the expected new line of iPhones and updates to its tiniest tablet.

While the upgrades were numerous, many of them were predictable, expected and incremental, failing to knock the collective audience’s socks off. The base iPad, the iPad mini, the Apple Watch and the new iPhones all received updated hardware. However, the upgrades were more quantity than quality, and rumored announcements like new AirPods or augmented reality glasses were nowhere to be found.

Still, the slight updates add up if you’ve been holding off on copping a new Apple device, and they seem particularly intriguing when looking at the company’s smallest devices.

More iPhones, more power

Like clockwork, Apple has a new line of iPhones. But aside from the diagonally arranged rear dual cameras and slightly changed color palette, you’d be quite hard-pressed to find something noticeably different about the iPhone 13, compared to last year’s models. The new A15 Bionic processor is an expected, but welcome, upgrade to an already lightning-fast phone, speeding up activities like video processing and live translation.

Also on deck for the iPhone 13 is a new pair of upgraded cameras, along with the addition of pro-level image stabilization features found on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The changes allow the lenses to take in more light, which means less noise and clearer photos in low-light conditions. Apple also added new video recording modes like “Cinematic mode,” which allows for easier and more automatic rack focusing.

The iPhone 13 will also feature improved 5G support, including support for more 5G bands, meaning over 200 carriers worldwide will be able to support the faster cellular connection standard using the iPhone 13 by year’s end, according to Apple.

Starting at $699 for the 128GB version, Apple’s iPhone 13 line will be available for U.S. customers on Sept. 24.

Pro users might not like the iPhone 13 Pro

Once again, Apple announced Pro and Pro Max models for its new iPhone line, but they didn’t exactly steal the show either. Yes, they have a better battery life, improved cameras, and — surprise — the new A15 Bionic processor. The 6.1-inch display (or 6.7-inch display on the Pro Max) has a new 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, which is perfect for twitchy, fast-paced games that require instant reaction times.

As always, each iPhone 13 version features an upgraded processor and camera system, including new features like professional-grade video recording and real-time image presets to apply custom image tweaks to your photos on the fly. ProRes video, the format used to record and display professional video, will soon be available on the iPhone 13 Pro, letting you record at 30 frames per second in 4K HDR. The three cameras have received sensor upgrades, along with a new 3x telephoto lens that lets you zoom in even closer to your subject.

Still, many actual creative professionals might be disappointed by the lack of professional-grade ports. The iPhone 13 Pro still uses the Lightning port, while other “Pro” devices like the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro feature the universal USB-C port for easy connectivity between devices used by professionals, like cameras, tablets or hubs.

Apple’s smartwatch gets tougher

The company also updated its Apple Watch wearable with some new colors and a slightly refreshed look.

The Apple Watch Series 7 features a tougher display, and is the first IP6X-certified Apple Watch, making it dust resistant and water resistant for up to 50 meters. The display is slightly larger than the Series 6, thanks to thinner bezels and a modified overall frame. The new Apple Watch Series 7 also charges faster when paired with its magnetic fast charger USB-C cable.

Available in five colors, its slightly rounded edges and curvier design looks pretty sleek, but doesn’t mess with the device’s growing ecosystem of bands and accessories.

Tied to the Apple Watch is Apple Fitness +, the company’s premium streaming workout service. Apple also announced today that it would bring Pilates and guided meditation to the program beginning Sept. 27. An Apple Watch Series 3 or later is required to use the service. It showcases your vitals on your TV or mobile device while you’re working out and assists in tracking progress.

The new Apple Watch Series 7 will be available starting at $399 later this fall.

The iPad dark horse gets an upgrade

To near-unanimous approval online, Apple also upgraded the much beloved iPad mini. It now features support for the newest Apple Pencil, a fingerprint sensor on the power button and the same flat-edged design as the iPad Air and iPad Pro. Apple also swapped out its Lightning port for a more universal USB-C port in the new iPad mini, letting you connect it to various accessories made for USB-C devices, like USB hubs and memory card readers.

The entire package is contained beneath a high-resolution 8.3-inch “Liquid Retina Display,” the same tech on the larger iPad Air and Pro models, and is powered by an updated, faster chip.

The cheapest, base model iPad also received a small spec bump, along with some new features to go with its updated front-facing camera (which still lacks the face-scanning features found on Apple’s other tablets). The new camera in the updated iPad supports the iPad Pro-specific CenterStage feature, which follows you around the frame during video calls, letting you walk around while still being in view of the front-facing camera. The education-friendly tablet still supports Apple Pencil, along with the previous “new iPad’s” accessories.

The new 10.2-inch iPad starts at $329 and is available to order today, with in-store availability on Sept. 24, along with the smaller iPad mini that starts at $499.

You should update your Apple products right now

While Apple didn’t announce this incredibly important security update during its product announcement showcase, it’s no less important.

Every Apple device user should update their device with the latest security update, which was released by the company on Sept. 13. The security update addresses the flaw called “Forced Entry,” a hack that could allow iPhone users to be compromised through no action of their own. Apple cited the security research group Citizen Lab in a blog post addressing the security update, which is designed to protect users that interact with a “maliciously crafted PDF.”

Apple event summary: iPhone 13 is here at $799, plus a new iPad, the return of the iPad Mini, Apple Watch Series 7

Apple fans finally got their first look at iPhone 13.

On Tuesday, Apple introduced the next version of its popular smartphone, one of several device announcements made during a virtual event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Among the other devices unveiled Tuesday: a revamped budget iPad, an updated version of its iPad Mini, and the new Apple Watch Series 7 with a bigger display.

The iPhone 13 will arrive in four models: a standard version with a 6.1-inch display, a Mini model, plus Pro and Pro Max models with larger screens and better battery life.

All four devices will be available to preorder on Friday and launch in stores on Sept. 24. The iPhone 13 will start at $699 for the Mini model, all the way up to the iPhone 13 Pro Max at $1,099.

"Our customers rely on iPhone every day, which is why we’ve made iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini more powerful, more capable, and more fun to use,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a statement.

This year's release features several subtle upgrades to the iPhone, which will remain popular due to "pent up demand" for a new Apple phone, said Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives.

About 250 million of the 975 million iPhones already sold have not been upgraded in more than 3.5 years, said Ives.

iPhone 13 features

The iPhone 13 will be available in five colors: red, starlight (a whiteish shade), midnight (a blackish shade), blue and pink. The two camera lenses on the back of the smartphone have been placed diagonally.

Along with the typical upgrades to processing speed, display and battery life, the iPhone 13 adds a Cinematic Mode, which uses an automatic focus to shift between subjects in a video, similar to Portrait Mode for photos.

The new phone also means the arrival of iOS 15, which will launch as a free software update on Sept. 20. It will include updates to FaceTime, a Live Text feature where users can search text within images, and a Focus mode to manage your notifications.

A new Apple Watch

It wasn't just the iPhone enjoying the attention at Apple's event. The tech giant also unveiled Apple Watch Series 7, with a larger display and redesigned look to provide more of a wraparound effect.

Digital buttons on the watch face appear bigger to make them easier to tap, such as trying to find snooze on an alarm. The watch will also include new faces to leverage the size of the display.

The Apple Watch uses the extra screen area to add a predictive text keyboard, so users can quickly type messages by dragging their fingers across the appropriate letters or they can do it the old-fashioned way letter by letter.

Apple says the updated watch boasts an 18-hour battery life and charges 33% faster than the Series 6. It's available in multiple colors including midnight, starlight, green and red.

The Series 7 will start at $399 and launches later this fall.

Two new iPads, including a revamped Mini

Apple also rolled out updates to its iPad line, with new versions of its entry-level model starting at $329 and an overhauled iPad Mini starting at $499.

Apple says the new iPad Mini, which will feature an 8.3-inch touchscreen, will perform 80% faster than the previous model. The tablet, available Sept. 24, will include an upgrade to its cameras, support for the second-generation Apple Pencil, and support for 5G wireless networks.

The entry-level iPad will retain the same design and price but feature more storage starting at 64GB, and add a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with support for Center Stage, a feature on iPad Pro models which can automatically detect and follow who's on screen. It's available on Sept. 24.

Which iPhone to choose?

Here's a quick rundown of all the iPhones Apple will have available, with iPhone 13 on the list, and its starting price:

  • iPhone SE: $399
  • iPhone 11: $499
  • iPhone 12: $599
  • iPhone 13: $699
  • iPhone 13 Pro: $999

The iPhone 13 Pro is not cheap

Bigger phone, bigger screens, bigger battery life and a bigger price tag. The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999, and the Pro Max starts at $1,099. There's also a storage option for the Pro at 1 terabyte. You can preorder all four new iPhones starting Friday. They reach stores Sept. 24.

A big camera update for iPhone 13 Pro

The camera features a brand new telephoto lens, Ultra-wide and wide lenses. Low light photos will look brighter and sharper, optical zoom will get a boost, while the system will allow for macro photography to get detailed closeups on objects. The smartphones will also feature Night Mode for taking pictures without proper lighting conditions.

Users can also personalize their cameras with photographic styles. You can use default templates like rich contrast or vibrant warm, altering the tone and warmth on a photo to create the specific style you want.

Apple showcased how the cameras work by putting them in the hands of directors including Kathryn Bigelow. And here I am wasting all this on my dog (but still worth it).

As for battery life, the 13 Pros last 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro and 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

There's an iPhone 13 Pro model, too

And of course, here comes the info on the Pro model of iPhone 13.

The Pro comes in four finishes: graphite, gold, silver and sierra blue. They seem to feature a more metallic look compared to the standard models. There's still the three-camera system on the back of the phone as well.

There's also going to be an iPhone 13 Pro Max, for the Apple fans who love their big screens. Apple said it has the fastest graphics processing of any smartphone, ideal if you enjoy games on your phone.

The Pro models will have a new Super Retina XDR display, as well as ProMotion, which offers really high refresh rates and adapts depending on the activity. Translation: Scrolling and swiping through your phone will feel more fluid.

The Pro will have a 6.1-inch screen and Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch screen.

The iPhone 13 will start at $799

The iPhone 13 Mini will start at $699 while the iPhone 13 will start at $799. The tech giant is also increasing the storage capability, starting with 128 GB of storage, which is pretty impressive. Both phones top off at 512 GB.

Also interesting to note Apple hasn't said anything about a Pro or Plus model with a larger screen.

How's iPhone 13 battery life?

The big question I have, as well as every other curious smartphone owner, is how long will the battery run? It runs between 1.5-2 hours longer than last year's phones.

There's a smart data mode that will automatically shift your phone from 5G to LTE to help conserve battery life.

What is Cinematic Mode?

As expected, the iPhone 13 is adding a new mode called Cinematic Mode, which is essentially a version of Portrait Mode for use in videos.

The feature is capable of highlighting and framing the key elements in a video clip, from people or objects in the background to those who are closer to the camera.

The mode will anticipate when the focus of the clip changes. Apple said they studied cinematography used in filmmaking to help design the mode. The mode will shoot in Dolby Vision HDR as well.

The iPhone 13 has arrived

Time for the star of the show, the next iPhone. Cook just unveiled the iPhone 13.

It has a flat-edged design just like the iPhone 12, and a diagonal arrangement for the dual-camera system in the back. It will be available in five colors.

Apple is also bringing back the iPhone Mini model. The display is 28% brighter than last year's phones. The display also boasts improved power efficiency. The standard iPhone 13 has a 6.1-inch screen, while the Mini has a 5.4-inch screen.

The next iPhone has a brand new chip (shocker) called A15. So, big surprise, it's going to run faster and better than your old iPhone.

Apple says the new chip has 50% faster processing than its competition and 30% faster graphics processing.

Apple Fitness+ gets an update, too

The fitness app available for Apple Watch will launch in 15 more countries and include additional types of experiences such as pilates and guided meditation. There are also workouts to help users get ready for snow season activities such as skiing or snowboarding.

The Fitness+ app will also add Group Workouts using the upcoming SharePlay feature for FaceTime launching on iOS 15. It can support up to 32 people at the same time.

Apple Watch Series 7 is here at $399

Next up is the Apple Watch, the company's popular wearable. It will add new features specific to biking, including support for e-bikes and fall detection.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will boast a new display with 20% more screen area than last year's model. The shape has also been tweaked to feature softer, more rounded corners to create a more seamless wraparound effect. It's also 70% brighter indoors.

Buttons of the watch have been made larger to make them easier to find (especially if you're half asleep trying to hit snooze on an alarm). There's also a keyboard on the Apple Watch. Finally. It also has several watch faces aimed at leveraging the additional screen space.

The Apple Watch is water-resistant and is the first model with dust resistance. It also boasts an 18-hour battery life and charges 33% faster than the Series 6.

It's available in multiple colors including midnight, starlight, green and product red. Watchbands also feature a fresh variety of colors, too.

The Series 7 will start at $399. It's available later this fall. Meanwhile, the budget Series 3 will stay at $199, while the Apple Watch SE starts at $279.

The iPad Mini returns at $499

Cook said "its littlest iPad" is getting its biggest upgrade ever. It's available in four colors: purple, pink, starlight and space grey. It also boasts an 8.3-inch liquid retina display.

The top button will also double as a way to use Touch ID option as well. It's 40% faster and 80% faster with graphics processing. So, yeah, it's going to be really fast.

The iPad Mini features a USB-C port, similar to iPad Air, which they say will result in 10 times faster data transfers, and support third-party devices that also use USB-C. It will also feature 5G.

The new mini-tablet will also record in 4K and the same camera as the upgraded entry-level iPad, which means it will also support Center Stage.

It will support the second-generation Apple Pencil, and will have its own line of super -hin Smart Folio cases.

The iPad Mini starts at $499, available in both Wi-Fi and cellular models. It's available for preorder Tuesday, and launches next week.

Apple unveils new iPad at $329

Apple plans to roll out a new version of its low-cost iPad model. Apple says the new model will provide 20% faster computer and graphics processing, as well as a stronger neural engine to make services such as Live Text operate more quickly.

The front-facing camera is now a 12MP Ultra Wide camera and features Center Stage, which makes video calls more engaging by automatically detecting people. It's currently available on Pro models of iPad.

It maintains a similar design, which allows it to support most third-party peripherals such as the first-generation Apple Pencil and keyboards.

The iPad will also stick with the same price at $329 but will add 64GB of storage to start, a major upgrade. It will launch next week.

New shows on Apple TV

Cook introduces the audience to new series coming this fall to the tech giant's streaming TV service. Several big names popping up, including Jon Stewart, a new season of The Morning Show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston coming this month, and the science-fiction show called "Invasion," a show called "The Shrink Next Door" starring Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell.

The Apple event has started

We've officially begun with a musical interlude that appears to take place across different parts of California, performing the song "California Soul."

Tim Cook now jumps on stage to sing the praises of California. "We're proud to call California our home," he said.

Where can I watch the Apple event?

Along with streaming the event on Apple's website , you can also watch it through YouTube .

Remember, you can also stay on this page and follow the latest news once the event begins at 1 p.m. EDT.

Apple Store: 'Be right back'

As expected prior to any Apple event, the company's online store is down since we're going to see new products later Tuesday.

"Be right back," reads the message on Apple's store . "We're making updates to the Apple store. Check back soon."

A new Apple Watch and AirPods, too?

Apple typically doesn't only talk iPhone when it hosts (physically or virtually) its September events. We're likely going to see a new version of the Apple Watch as well. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman , the upgraded Apple Watch Series 7 will sport a new design, larger screens and a faster processor.

Meanwhile, 9to5Mac reports Apple could also introduce a fresh version of its AirPods. The last time Apple rolled out new AirPods was in 2019, said the report.

Beware the iPhone 13 scams

As buzz rises over the likely unveiling of the iPhone 13, so too are the number of scams linked to Apple's event. Research firm Kaspersky said they have seen intensified scamming activity ahead of the event.

The schemes often involve fake offers such as snagging the next iPhone before release or getting other deals on products like AirPods. People who sign up never get the device, and hackers get a hold of their personal information.

“Apple presentations have always been a popular lure for scammers to roll out malicious activity,” said Tatyana Shcherbakova, security expert at Kaspersky, in a statement. “For several years now, we’ve seen how fraudsters use the buzz around new iPhone release and start spreading malicious features."

Among tips Kaspersky offers to protect yourself: Verify messages are from reliable sources, don't click on links in suspicious emails, and be skeptical about offers that appear too good to be true.

Epic ruling: Changes for the App Store?

It's likely Apple will address the recent decision in Epic Game's lawsuit filed against the iPhone maker. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ordered Apple to let developers use payment options beyond the App Store, which would circumvent Apple's 30% commission on most app transactions.

Epic Games has said it is appealing the judge's decision rejecting Epic's allegations that Apple ran a monopoly.

By mid-December, Apple must build a framework that would allow developers to steer payments outside of the App Store and Apple's iOS, said Gene Munster, a managing partner with Loup Ventures.

But "it won't be until next year that developers can do steering A/B testing," Munster said on Twitter. " Apple will probably make further changes in the next 5 years, which will collectively yield an App Store that is a favorable asset from an investor's standpoint."

– Mike Snider

Regarding App Store policies, it won't be until next year that developers can do steering A/B testing. 'Pent up demand' for a new iPhone

In advance of today's event, Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives laid out a synopsis of Apple's position, noting that the company "remains in the midst of its strongest overall product cycle in roughly a decade."

The new line of iPhones, expected to be called the iPhone 13, will be the second model to include 5G wireless connectivity. Apple appears to be boosting production of the new phones beyond that of the iPhone 12, Ives said. His analysis suggests Apple's initial production of about 90 million units surpasses that of the initial iPhone 12 production of 80 million.

The reasoning? "This 5G driven product cycle will extend into 2022 and should also benefit from a post-vaccine consumer 'reopening environment,' Ives said.

Beyond that, there is "pent up demand" for new iPhones among current customers because about 250 million of the 975 million iPhones already sold have not been upgraded in more than 3.5 years, he said.

The new wave of iPhones is expected to include "an eye-popping 1 terabyte storage option," twice the highest storage capacity in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Ives expects.

►iOS 15 is arriving soon: Here's what we know about the iPhone's upcoming update

Follow Brett Molina on Twitter: @brettmolina23 .

RECAP: Apple unveils the iPhone 13, a new iPad, and a new Apple Watch

  • Apple just unveiled new versions of many of its biggest products, including the iPhone 13.
  • New versions of the iPad, iPad Mini, and Apple Watch also debuted.
  • With the exception of the Watch Series 7, all the new products will ship this month.

Rather than beginning with the iPhone, Apple CEO Tim Cook started the presentation with the debut of the latest iPad: The new iPad starts at $329 and is expected to ship to customers starting next week.

new iphone 13 presentation

The first new product Apple debuted on Tuesday was an update to its long-running tablet, the iPad.

The latest version of the iPad comes with a more powerful chip, the "A13 Bionic," boasting 20% stronger performance, and an upgraded 12 megapixel ultrawide camera. It's also getting a storage boost, with the base model coming with 64 GB.

Apple's latest iPad starts at $329, comes in two colors ("space gray" and silver), and it's expected to start shipping to customers next week. It's available for pre-order on Tuesday, Apple said.

Apple also updated its smaller iPad, the iPad Mini. The fifth generation iPad Mini starts at $499, comes with 5G connectivity, and has a more powerful chip and camera.

new iphone 13 presentation

It's not just the traditional iPad getting an update: Apple rolled right from the big iPad update to an update for the iPad Mini.

In the 2.5 years since Apple last updated the iPad Mini, Apple focused on improving the chip at the heart of the tablet, adding 5G connectivity, and producing the device in more colors (space grey, pink, purple, and starlight).

In a nod to its bigger brother, the iPad Mini now has a USB-C port which is used both for charging and for connecting to various accessories, and it matches the overall design of the standard iPad.

The product updates kept coming: The latest version of Apple's Watch is known as Apple Watch Series 7 and it's the biggest version of the watch Apple's ever made.

new iphone 13 presentation

The latest version of the Apple Watch is the Series 7, and it starts at $399.

The new Series 7 has a larger and tougher display than ever before, Apple said. It comes in five new colors, and employs Apple's "Retina" display technology.

It's otherwise not a massive update over previous models, but the benefit of the new Apple Watch models dropping is that older models are likely to drop in price. Apple didn't put a specific launch date on the new Apple Watch models, and only committed to a "fall" launch window.

After nearly 40 minutes of presentation, Apple finally gave in and debuted the product update everyone was waiting for: The iPhone 13!

new iphone 13 presentation

Apple's new smartphone is the iPhone 13, embracing the notoriously unlucky number for the latest version of its wildly popular device.

Like the other new Apple products announced on Tuesday, the iPhone 13 comes in an array of colors (pink, blue, "midnight starlight," and Product RED). It's got a new chip at its heart (the A15 Bionic) that makes it Apple's most powerful iPhone yet, and the base storage has been increased to 128 GB (a new 512 GB model is also being added at the high end).

Despite a tease from Apple-produced "Ted Lasso," the latest iPhone isn't ditching the notch at the top of the screen. It looks nearly identical to last year's iPhone in design.

There isn't just one new iPhone model: the iPhone 13 also comes in a smaller form factor, with the iPhone 13 Mini. The smaller form factor matches the larger iPhone in power, but in a smaller size.

The new iPhone 13 starts at $699, Apple said, and pre-orders open on Friday, September 17. The first units will arrive with customers on September 24, Apple said.

Apple wasn't done with the iPhone 13: The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, its highest-end models of the iPhone, were also unveiled.

new iphone 13 presentation

As the name suggests, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are the more powerful, higher tech versions of the standard iPhone 13.

The big updates to the Pro models over the standard models are a Super Retina XDR display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and more powerful cameras, and it comes in two large sizes at 6.1 (Pro) and 6.7 inches (Pro Max).

Like last year, the Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max starts at $1099. All models of iPhone 13 are available for pre-order starting this Friday, September 17, and will begin arriving with buyers on September 24.

Apple event recap — iPhone 13, Apple Watch 7, new iPad mini 6 and more

All the big apple announcements in one place.

Apple september 2021 event live blog

Apple introduced two new iPads, four new iPhones and an updated Apple Watch during its Sept. 14 product event, while also leaving a few rumored products waiting in the wings.

Still, more than half-a-dozen product launches is nothing to sneeze at, especially when led by the iPhone 13 series. While there are plenty of similarities between this year's phones and the iPhone 12 models from 2020, there are significant enough changes — especially on the iPhone 13 Pro models — to tantalize people to upgrade.

Here's a closer look at what Apple announced at the Apple event and when you can get it.

iPhone 13 : Like last year, Apple is introducing four phones, and they have the same prices as the iPhone 12 lineup — $699 for the iPhone 13 mini, $799 for the iPhone 13, $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro and $1,099 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. But there are several upgrades here.

The phones have smaller notches as rumored, and major improvements to the cameras, including big sensors to let in more light. All four models support a new Cinematic mode which brings Hollywood-style rack focus to the videos you shoot. And it's all powered by the faster new A15 Bionic processor.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max see the more substantive changes with improved telephoto lenses plus 120Hz ProMotion displays that adjust their refresh rate for smoother, more immersive experiences.

The best news is the promise of better battery life across the board, thanks to bigger batteries and other tweaks.

Apple Watch 7 : Apple's new watch is arriving later this fall with a bigger, brighter screen, thinner display borders and faster charging (though not longer battery life, we're sad to say).

Another highlight is the crack-resistant display for better durability. The new watch will start at $399 while the Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch SE will remain as lower cost options.

iPad 9 : Apple's standard iPad gets an A13 Bionic processor, an improved 12MP front camera that adopts the Center Stage feature and better low-light photography. It's arriving next week at $329.

iPad mini 6 : Apple's smallest iPad sees its first update since 2019, with a new edge-to-edge display and Touch ID button similar to the one Apple introduced with the iPad Air. Center Stage video and Apple Pencil support is included in this $499 model, which ships next week.

Missing in action from this event was any news of new MacBooks — which we expected to be left out — and the AirPods 3 — which surprised us by its absence. Apple did detail new features coming to its Apple Fitness Plus subscription service, though.

Be sure to also check out our archived live blog below for more details, as well as our live reactions to every big announcement as it happened and an embedded replay of Apple's product event announcements.

So today's the big day. And the iPhone 13 is coming. Think you'll upgrade? Well, here's the one feature we're hoping to see to make Apple's new iPhones worth buying .

iOS 15 widgets

iOS 15 is also coming this week and will get a recap at the Apple event. So here are 8 of the new iOS 15 features you'll want to try out .

A last-minute case leak adds further credence to the leaks we've heard about the iPhone 13's design. It basically looks like an iPhone 12 but we expect a smaller notch.

Interested in the new Apple Watch design? Then here are the colors we are expecting to see from the Apple Watch 7 .

Apple Watch Series 7 colors — here's what the rumors suggest

Another leak has the iPhone 13 tipped to get 1TB of storage space , which isn't a first for smartphones, but could be pretty massive. It would be a boon for people who capture a lot of photos and videos.

New iPad mini 6 leak alert! Or at least an alleged one, claiming there'll be Apple Pencil 2 support, a USB-C port, Smart Connector, and a trio of colors. The jury's still out on whether it'll be revealed today.

It's looking like the new iPhone could get a ProMotion display, and we have a good breakdown of why an iPhone 13 120Hz display is a big deal for users.

iPhone 13 concept design

The AirPods 3 are expected to launch today but could be more expensive than the AirPods 2 . At least that's according to Apple oracle and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has the next-gen wireless earbuds tipped to be sold alongside the previous generation.

AirPods 3 design leak

Well this won't come as a huge surprise to people who follow tech events, but Apple has its own 'like' animation for Twitter for the Apple event, with a like flashing up a luminescent Apple logo before tuning into a heart.

Given the whole "California streaming" tagline for the Apple event, we'd be somewhat curious as to whether there'll be any mention of Apple TV Plus . We've heard no leaks around it, but maybe Apple has managed to keep the lid on a few surprises.

If you're not convinced by the design of the iPhone 13, then you might want to wait for the iPhone 14 . According to the early claimed leaks so far, it could finally drop the display notch and lose the camera bump. And Face ID could even be hidden under the iPhone 14's display . That would be cool, but we'd be curious to see how Apple would pull that off.

More claimed iPhone 13 case renders have been posted by serial leaker Evan Blass on his evleaks Twitter account. They give us yet another look at how Apple could have shrunken down the display notch, finally!

Uh-oh! The Apple Store appears to be down. But that's actually a good thing as it means Apple is likely refreshing its product lineup ahead of the Apple event, meaning we could see iPhone 13 pre-orders go live today.

The Apple Store is down! The average Store downtime is about 3 hours and 29 minutes – https://t.co/hnhhIQ6KjH September 14, 2021

And here's our take on the iPhone 13 case leaks . It's not going to revolutionize the iPhone's current design, but we're absolutely ready for a smaller notch.

iPhone 13 case render

Don't expect so see the much-rumored MacBook Pro 2021 14-inch or a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro today, as they've been tipped for a separate Apple event, likely in October time. But Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has claimed the new M1X MacBook pros could arrive in "the next several weeks" at a second Apple event that may also feature iPads.

We've perused the rumor that the iPad mini 6 will be inspired by the iPad Air , and we reckon Apple could be onto a winner here. A sleeker design with slimmer bezels and extra functionality could make for a rather impressive compact tablet.

Tom’s Guide’s editors are making their predictions for the Apple Event. Global editor in chief Mark Spoonauer thinks the camera upgrades will be the highlight of the iPhone 13.

“If the rumors are true, I think people will be talking about the improved Night mode and portrait mode video. Right now the iPhone 12 really struggles when shooting the moon or stars,” Spoonauer says.

iPhone 13 renders by Ian Zelbo

Meanwhile, it's all about the display upgrades for managing editor of news Roland Moore-Colyer: "I really hope to see Apple adopt a 120Hz refresh rate across all iPhone 13 models. But it looks like only the iPhone 13 Pro will get it.

"But having used the Oppo Find X3 Pro for months now, I'm utterly enamoured with high-refresh rate displays, so if the iPhone 13 Pro gets one, it'll be the Apple phone for me."

iPhone 13 renders

Senior staff writer Kate Kozuch would like to see Apple adopt the much-rumored under-display Touch ID. Sadly, it looks like she'll have to wait until the iPhone 14.

"The return of Touch ID would make all my iPhone 13 dreams come true. Yeah, it's probably not happening, but under-screen Touch ID would make getting into my iPhone so much easier," said Kozuch.

iPhone 13 Pro Touch ID

More of an Android user, editor in chief Marc McLaren still feels that camera improvements are again the big draw of Apple's next-gen phone.

"The iPhone 13 Pro will supposedly be getting some big new camera skills such as autofocus on the wide-angle lens and a bigger sensor," he said. "If true, this could push the iPhone even further ahead of the competition when it comes to photography. And let's face it, that's a far bigger deal for most people than whether it has a slightly smaller notch."

iPhone 13 dummy unit

Finally. The iPhone 13 is tipped to ditch the measly 64GB storage option and start with a base 128GB of storage. This would put Apple's new iPhone on par with the best Android phones.

An iPhone in sharp focus with a MacBook in the background.

If you haven't done so yet, update your iPhone to iOS 14.8 right now . Apple has issued an emergency update for iPhones and iPads in response to a serious spyware flaw.

Apple iPad 10.2-inch

The iPad 9 has just been tipped to launch today alongside the iPhone 13. It's definitely not set in stone, but we could see a larger 10.5-inch display, faster A14 Bionic chip and more RAM inside Apple's most affordable tablet.

Feeling nostalgic as we wait for the iPhone 13 launch? @SuperSaf has a closer look at the original iPhone on video, and it looks positively tiny.

If this Tim Cook tweet is to be believed, today's Apple Event is coming to you live from the Joshua Tree National Park.

Good morning from somewhere a little different this time. We’re California streaming in 3 hours! See you soon. 👀 #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/C5V5hiel8F September 14, 2021

Nah, that's probably not true. But we'd guess this tweet sheds more light on the California Streaming theme of the event, with Apple likely featuring executives talking up its products from the four corners of California instead of from around the Apple campus, as has been the case in previous virtual events.

Celebrity cameos were a mainstay of Apple events back when these things were held in person. (Remember that time back in 2014 when U2 showed up to help launch the iPhone 6, and suddenly there was a new U2 album on our phones? Good times...) But the pace of celebrity walk-ons has tapered off in the COVID-19 area, as Apple has taken its events virtual.

That said, we'd wager there's a non-zero chance of a Ted Lasso cameo today, though perhaps a Schmigadoon-style musical number is too much to hope for.

With the Apple Store down — see our earlier live blog update — it's a pretty good better that there will be things to pre-order at the end of the day. If you're hoping one of those things is an iPhone, be sure to check out our iPhone 13 pre-order guide , which we plan to update with all the information from retailers and carriers just as soon as it comes in.

In the meantime, you'll find links to the top iPhone retailers and a guide on what to expect in terms of ordering info and potential deal.

Sure, you can watch the Apple event live stream , or follow along here in the live blog or even watch the Tom's Guide Twitter account for updates. But you can TikTok your way through today's proceedings, too, and Tom's Guide is here to helpl

Here's a TikTok of our own Kate Kozuch previewing today's big Apple reveal .

@tomsguide Will you watch today’s #Apple event? #iphone13 will make a big debut, but we could see new #airpods, a new #ipad and the #applewatch7, too! 🍎 #tech ♬ Tech (V1) - Brian Englishman

We're expecting Apple to reveal release dates for iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8 today. (We could also get the release date for macOS 12 Monterey, though if Apple is holding a separate Mac event in a few weeks, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Apple to release a macOS update then.) In fact, Apple could go so far as to roll out the new software updates today.

But even if the latest software updates aren't available until next week, that raises the inevitable question — should you update right away or should you wait for an update or two before taking the plunge?

It's never a bad idea to wait, as that gives Apple a chance to stamp out any lingering bugs. And you can also judge how smooth the upgrade process is by seeing how people react on social media. In terms of iOS 15, at least, I've been testing the beta since it came out in June — you can read my iOS 15 beta hands-on to see what I think. And I've found it to be pretty stable, with the most persistent bug being that apps occasionally crash when I try to launch them and I'll need to launch them once again — not exactly a showstopper of a bug.

So if you normally proceed with caution around software updates continue to do so. Otherwise, if you're feeling adventurous, these feel like pretty solid updates.

We mentioned potential Apple Watch colors earlier, but what about the iPhone? As you can imagine, iPhone color rumors are a big source of speculation leading up to any iPhone launch. After all, the color of the phone is the first thing people see, so clearly, everyone wants an iPhone that makes a good impression.

iPhone 13 could get a pink version — what we know

In the case of the iPhone 13, think pink. Apple is going with that as a color option for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, according to rumors. Pink would replace Green among the current color options, with white, black, purple, blue and Product [Red] all returning from the iPhone 12. Or so the rumor goes.

On the iPhone 13 Pro front, expect fewer color options, though two of them are likely to be new. Apple is reportedly adding matte black and bronze as options alongside silver and gold.

As always, it will be interesting to see which colors people embrace and which ones will be in ample supply.

Got plans for after the Apple event? Tom's Guide editorial director Mark Spoonauer will be appearing on the Future Tech Show with Laptop editor-in-chief Sherri Smith to talk about whatever Apple announces.

The show gets underway at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT, and you can watch along on YouTube or on the embedded stream below.

If you're looking for a last-minute prediction to wow friends and family with, it's not out of the question that Apple could talk about Apple Arcade today. It would make particular sense if the iPhone 13 Pro models do get 120Hz displays, since immersive gaming would be one of the known benefits of having a fast-refreshing 120Hz display .

Apple Arcade Verizon

Apple could stoke enthusiasm for 120Hz displays by talking about games on Apple Arcade that have been optimized for the faster refresh rate — at least, that's one way to talk up both the benefits of Apple's new phones plus its subscription services.

This isn't based on any rumor or inside knowledge — just some speculation on our part. We'll see if it's correct in a little more than an hour.

If this were an in-person product launch, about now, Apple would be opening the doors, and tech reporters would be tweeting out photos of the Steve Jobs Theater. In lieu of that, here's a photo of my TV, opened to the TV app on Apple TV, which will be live streaming the event.

Apple September 2021 event

The Steve Jobs Theater, this ain't.

If you like your iPhone 13 predictions last minute, AppleInsider has posted a round-up of what the analysts at TrendForce think about the upcoming phone announcements. What they're forecasting is consistent with the iPhone 13 rumors we've been tracking.

The highlights:

  • The iPhone 13 Pro will get ProMotion displays — that's the dynamically adjusting 120Hz refresh rate — and a 1TB storage option.
  • As with the iPhone 12, all the iPhone 13 models will have AMOLED screens.
  • Sensor shift stabilization, a feature on the iPhone 12 Pro Max's camera, will be available on all four iPhone 13 models.
  • LiDAR returns, though the story doesn't specify if that's just returning to the Pro models or if the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are joining in on the fun. We've heard dueling predictions on that front.

Only another 50 minutes or so, and we'll find out who's right.

Some last-minute reading, while we're waiting for Apple to flip the switch on today's presentation: The iPhone 12 was a big hit, helping Apple enjoy record sales throughout the past year — even at times when iPhone sales tend to peter out. One of the big reasons was the addition of 5G.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 13 dummy

So how does Apple follow that up? True, not everyone upgraded to a 5G iPhone since the iPhone 12's release, so there will still be some upgraders for that feature. But what else? Here's how Apple could make the case that the iPhone 13 is the device you need .

It has only now occurred to me that there could be a good reason for Tim Cook to be wandering around the desert , other than the fact that Joshua Tree is a lovely national park, and well worth a visit (though maybe not in the summertime). The iPhone 13 is rumored to be getting some form of satellite communication — likely a way to send alerts via text when a cellular connection isn't available.

iPhone 13 render alongside image of satellite

Having spent some time in Joshua Tree National Park, I can tell you that it is also an ideal place to show what happens when you can't pick up a cellular connection. So chalk that up as another last-minute prediction.

If you're following along at home, Apple's live stream is now live — if you define "live" as showing the Apple logo floating above a field of flowers while soothing music plays.

Apple September 2021 event

Strap yourself in, folks.

And we're underway with a musical number — California Soul — with shots of music makers around the state of California. In addition to that desert Tim Cook tweeted from, we've got coastal, forest and city scapes, so Apple is leaning into its home state here.

Oh, Tim Cook is in a theater, not the desert. Well, that's a disappointment.

We're starting with Apple TV Plus, as Tim Cook recounts the critical and award acclaim Apple shows are getting (obligatory Ted Lasso mention). And we're going to get a preview of some of the shows coming to Apple TV this fall. That includes returning favorites — The Morning Show — as well as new programs like Jon Stewart's upcoming show and programs with Tom Hanks and Paul Rudd.

We're getting a new iPad, the iPad 9 to be exact. It will be powered by the A13 processor, which Apple says is 3x faster than the best selling Chromebook and 6x faster than the best selling Android tablet.

iPad 2021

Apple's also touting the neural engine on the A13 processor, as well as the upgraded 12MP ultrawide camera that's now on the front of the iPad. To go with that camera, the iPad will adapt the Center Stage feature from the iPad Pro, so that you remain in the shot as you move around.

Center Stage works in FaceTime as well as third party apps like Zoom and Blue Jeans. It works with things like TikTok too, which should impress the young'ins.

The new iPad starts at $329 for 64GB (which is twice the storage as before). The education price is $299, so clearly Apple is touting this as a tablet for schools.

iPad 2021 Price

We're getting a second iPad too — the iPad mini 6 in purple, pink, starlight and space gray. You get a liquid retina display with an all-screen design and new enclosure.

Because the screen is edge-to-edge, Touch ID has moved to the button on the top of the screen — a trick Apple borrowed from the iPad Air (and should add to its phones, if you ask me.)

iPad mini 2021

Apple is adopted the USB-C port for the mini, same as the IPad Air. So that's a faster data connection. Apple's touting the speed and improved neural engine on the iPad mini, too. (If they mentioned what chip is powering the tablet, though, I missed it.)

iPad mini 2021

But the biggest connectivity addition may be the inclusion of 5G. Presumably that will be included with the cellular option of the iPad mini, as opposed to the Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet.

As with the other iPad (and the iPad Pro before it), the iPad Air adds the Center Stage feature. (It's almost as if video conferencing has become important over the last 18 months.)

Like the iPad, the iPad mini now has Apple Pencil support. So basically, this tablet is becoming a lot like Apple's full-sized iPad only shrunken down.

The iPad mini costs $499, with Wi-Fi and cellular connections. Like the main iPad, it's available to order today and on-sale next week.

iPad mini 2021 price

The iPads now dispensed with, Apple turns to the Apple Watch. Tim Cook says Apple is continuing to push the boundaries of what the Apple Watch continue to do. And to show you what that means, chief operating officer Jeff Williams has been dispatched to the central coast of California to talk about new cycling features in watchOS 8. The best addition: fall detection in case you and your bike take a tumble.

But we're not just here to talk about how watchOS can now better track cycling — Apple's introducing a new generation of Apple Watch, the Series 7. It features the largest display ever — 20% more than Series 6. Borders are just 1.7mm, 40% thinner than last year's watch, to maximize screen area.

We get rounder corners for the display, not the flat edges that had been rumored. More importantly, the watch is 70% brighter when your wrist is down, so that it's easier to check the time. ("Discretely," Williams adds.)

Apple Watch Series 7

Series 7 has WR50 water resistance and is more durable than before. Charging's been improved to be 33% faster, but Apple Watch users will be disappointed that Apple is still only touting all-day battery life. We had been hoping that Apple would boost how long its watch would last.

Apple Watch Series 7

The watch will come in Midnight, Starlight, Green and Product [Red] colors. Additional colors for available for stainless steel.

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399; it won't be available until later this fall (possibly confirming rumors that the Apple Watch is experience production displays.) The Apple Watch Series 3 remains in the lineup for $199 while the Apple Watch SE costs $279.

It wouldn't be an Apple Watch presentation without talk of Apple Fitness Plus, the subscription service available in six countries. Fifteen countries will add the service later this fall with subtitled workouts.

Among the additions to Fitness Plus are pilates, guided meditations and a new workout program that takes its inspiration from winter sports (Workouts to Get Ready for Snow Season).

Apple Fitness+

Apple is also introducing Fitness Plus Group Workouts through Share Play. The feature will be available through iPhone, iPad and Mac, and support up to 32 people at once. Presumably, with SharePlay not coming when iOS 15 launches, that feature will be delayed until later this fall. Otherwise, Apple says that new features are arriving next month.

By the way, here's our report on the iPad 9 and all the new features Apple announced earlier.

iPad 2021

Sound the iPhone 13 alarm. Apple's ready to show off the new phones. A lot is the same from last year — Ceramic Shield display and straight edges — though the camera array is rearranged to be diagonal. The notch is smaller, too as rumored, and there are five colors — pink joins black, white, red and blue.

iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have new displays that are 28% brighter than before. And inside there's the new A15 Bionic chip, which features a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU. Apple says the CPU is the fastest of any phone, and we'd believe that claim given how the iPhone has smoked Android devices in past benchmarking.

iPhone 13

Let's talk cameras. There's a next-generation image signal processor powering what Apple touts as the the most advanced dual-camera system it's put on any phone.

The main 12MP sensor is larger to let in more light, and the sensor shift stabilization introduced in the iPhone 12 Pro Max is coming to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. That should mean sharper photos.

A new ultrawide camera is included to better capture dark areas.

iPhone 13

On the video front, Cinematic mode can adjust background and foreground focus to make your videos look more like the movies you see on the big-screen. You start recording and Cinematic mode holds focus on the subject, transitioning the focus in real time. One of the neater tricks is when your subject trains her focus away from the camera, the iPhone will adjust the focus as well. You're also able to tap to shift focus or lock it on another subject

iPhone 13 cinematic mode

Camera demos don't always translate well to video, but this one really impressed.

Apple says the iPhone 13 features customized antennas to add more 5G bands than before — pretty impressive given the array of bands the iPhone 12 support. Apple's promising 5G support for 200 carriers in 60 countries and regions by year's end.

Let's be frank — battery life on the iPhone 12 wasn't great. Apple apparently heard those complaints because it's promising better battery life for the iPhone 13. Specifically, the iPhone 13 mini will last 1.5 hours longer than its predecessor while the iPhone 13 could last up to 2.5 hours longer.

Credit a bigger battery, the A15 processor and power optimizations resulting from software and hardware integration. This is one feature we definitely hope lives up to Apple's billing.

iPhone 13 battery

Prices are the same as last year — $699 for the iPhone 13 mini and $799 for the iPhone 13. Thankfully, you'll get more storage, as the phones now start with 128GB of storage instead of a paltry 64GB. There are also 256GB and 512GB options.

Apple's promising trade-in deals to lower the cost of your new iPhone, which I'm sure we'll find out about later today.

"Say, aren't there usually Pro versions of those iPhones?" Right you are, friend. It's time to talk iPhone 13 Pro — "our most Pro iPhone ever," Tim Cook says.

iPhone 13 Pro

You get four finishes — graphite, gold, silver and Sierra Blue. Sounds like the color rumor mongers missed the boat here. You get the ceramic display and IP68 water resistance, as before, and a redesigned interior makes room for a bigger battery.

Sounds like the iPhone 13 Pro gets a slightly modified A15 chip, with a 5-core GPU. Apple is touting it as the fastest graphics experience on the iPhone ever.

As widely anticipated, Apple is bringing ProMotion displays to the Pro lineup, with the ability to scale between 10Hz and 120Hz, depending on what you're doing on the screen. That includes adjusting the refresh rate based on how quickly you're scrolling through the screen

iPhone 13 touch and gaming

Apple's presentation features developers — largely from games and creative apps — talking about the responsive, lack of lag and more detailed graphics that appear, thanks to ProMotion graphics.

There's an all-new camera system, highlighted by a 77mm telephoto camera with 3x zoom. The ultrawide camera has a wider aperture than before for brighter sharper photos. The sensor on the main lens is larger, too, and Apple's touting the astrophotography aspects of that, as well as better low light images.

All of the cameras have Night mode, including the telephoto lens.

iPhone 13 pro camera

Kathryn Bigelow, who's won two Oscars, and cinematographer Greig Fraser are showing off what the iPhone 13 Pro cameras can do with video capture. It will not surprise you to learn that they were impressed with Cinematic mode and the ability to create depth from a lens.

Later this year, Apple is bringing ProRes Video to the iPhone 13 Pro. A15 Bionic adds hardware acceleration for ProRes video, allowing you to record 4K at 30FPs right in the camera app. As ProRes is favored in the movie-making industry, that's invaluable to creative pros.

We mentioned bigger batteries and Apple is promising longer battery life for the iPhone 13 Pro (1.5 hours longer than the 12 Pro) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (2.5 longer than its predecessor). That's great news for the 13 Pro Max considering the iPhone 12 Pro Max just missed out on landing on our list of the best phone battery life.

Price are the same as last year — $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro and $1,099 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And yes, the long-rumored 1TB model is now with us.

All four iPhone 13 models go on pre-sale this Friday (Sept. 17) and hit stores on Sept. 24.

Apple's wrapping things up, which means it's true that any Mac announcements will have to wait for a future event. Also missing — more curiously — are the rumored AirPods 3.

While we're talking about things that haven't been announced, the Apple presentation came and went with no mention of the release dates for iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and watchOS 8. If we had to guess, the software's going to debut before the phones hit the stores on Sept. 24, so we'd guess early next week.

And that does it for Apple's product event. We'll have more on what was announced all across Tom's Guide. Thanks for joining us.

During a virtual product presentation, Apple today unveiled the iPhone 13, which has longer battery life and an improved camera, including “cinematic mode.”

The phone’s camera is designed to be more effective at capturing night scenes, capturing about 50% more light than the previous model. The goal, the company said, is to record “videos of people, pets, and objects with a beautiful depth effect with automatic focus changes, so anyone can capture cinema-style moments.”

In addition to the iPhone, the company unveiled its seventh-generation Apple Watch and new iPads, and an expansion of its fitness streaming service. Apple Fitness+ will also now offer guided meditation.

Pre-sales begin Friday for the new iPhone, which has a proprietary chip and a battery that the company says can last up to 90 minutes longer than the iPhone 12 battery. The chip is also billed as delivering faster operational speeds and faster neural/machine learning technology . The base price of the iPhone 13 will be $799, though discounts through carriers and for trade-ins can bring it lower. The iPhone Pro starts at $999.

Due to Covid-19 safety protocols, the presentation was pre-recorded and streamed online. It has been two years since a live audience attended an Apple unveiling in person at the company’s Cupertino, CA home base.

Even with a live audience, product events under CEO Tim Cook have a different feel from the classic “just one more thing” stagecraft of the company’s late co-founder Steve Jobs. While Jobs pulled off a series of stunners, notably the introduction of the iPod and iPhone, Cook has always been known for his strength as a steady operational executive.

The tech giant’s growing services business — everything from cloud storage to music to video streaming — has become a priority under Cook. That shift positioned Apple well to weather the coronavirus pandemic without too much reliance on the more volatile hardware business. Nevertheless, the iPhone alone still accounted for nearly half of the company’s $81.4 billion in total revenue for the quarter ending June 30.

The company’s product unveiling followed a ruling by a federal judge in a legal battle with Epic Games over the “steering” of consumers to Apple’s App Store. The company takes 30% of the revenue from all apps downloaded via its store, with the so-called “Apple tax” causing consternation among app and game developers. Epic, which makes games like Fortnite , called the store policy monopolistic. The judge partly agreed and ordered Apple to loosen some restrictions on the App Store, but the company had already begun to incorporate many of the changes she requested.

Create a presentation in Keynote on iPhone

To create a new presentation, you first choose a theme to use as a starting point. Themes use coordinated fonts and colors for a unified look and often include placeholders that you can replace with your own content.

Create a presentation from a theme

new iphone 13 presentation

Note: If you’d like the ability to format table and chart data using the conventions of another language, choose the language before choosing a theme. See Format a presentation for another language .

In the theme chooser, tap the category names at the top of the screen to view different themes, then tap a theme to open it.

Some themes aren’t downloaded to your device until you choose them or open a presentation that uses one. If your connection is slow or you’re offline when this happens, placeholder images and slide backgrounds in the presentation may appear at a lower resolution until you’re online again or the theme finishes downloading.

the Format button

Each slide layout offers a different arrangement of text and images that you use as a starting point for your content.

the Close button

Do any of the following to build your presentation:

the Add Slide button

Add text: Double-tap placeholder text to add your own.

the Replace Image button

To end the presentation, pinch closed anywhere on the screen. For more ways to show a presentation, see Play a presentation on your iPhone or iPad .

the Back button

Keynote automatically saves your changes as you work, so you don't need to worry about consistently saving your presentation manually. However, it's a good idea to rename your presentation so you can easily find it the next time you want to work on it. You can change the name of the presentation or change where it’s saved at any time.

Create a presentation outline

You can create a text outline of a new presentation in outline view in Keynote. Outline view displays your slides as a hierarchical series of titles, subtitles, points, and media placeholders. You can add and edit text, place images and videos, and change the format of slides in outline view. This is useful for creating an initial draft, taking notes, or focusing on the structure of a new presentation.

In the presentation manager, tap Start an Outline to open a new presentation in outline view.

Do any of the following:

To quickly add a slide while typing in the last row of a slide, tap Return twice.

the drag handle

Add text: Tap a row in the text outline, then type.

the single image placeholder

Your presentation is saved automatically as you work, so you don’t lose your work when you close the presentation. Closing the presentation doesn’t quit Keynote.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus Hands-On: Camera Key, Action Button, New Colors

I tried out the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus' new camera buttons that you can press and slide. These high-end phones are among the only iPhones to run Apple Intelligence.

new iphone 13 presentation

The iPhone 16's most premium models have buttons you can actually press.

Starting now, you can preorder all four models of Apple's new iPhone 16 phones , which go on sale Sept. 20 and come with iOS 18 , Apple Intelligence (what Apple calls its AI software) and, remarkably, two physical buttons you can push down -- one on either side of the phone. I went hands-on with the iPhone 16 at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., earlier this week and got to try out the new features in person, including the camera button. I have some thoughts to share.

If you're wondering what the biggest differences are between the iPhone 16 and last year's iPhone 15, this new dedicated camera button and the addition of the Action button (previously exclusive to the Pro) are my major callouts. Apple has also upgraded to a new A18 processor and improved the iPhone's zoom camera quality. Apple is also touting its new iPhone lineup as being the first phones built for Apple Intelligence at a time when tech giants are competing to inject their most important products with more AI.

Pricing remains the same as last year's phones: The 128GB iPhone 16 starts at $799 (£799, AU$1,399) and the 128GB iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899 (£899, AU$1,599).

Apple preorder sales: We're rounding up the best iPhone 16 , Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4 deals at launch.

iPhone 16: A look at the cameras

iphone-16-camera

The iPhone 16's cameras are vertically stacked.

The new iPhones will have a redesigned rear camera bump that aligns the sensors vertically, similar to how they appeared on the back of the iPhone X, XS, XR, 11 and 12 (the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 had rear cameras that were diagonally aligned). Vertically aligning the cameras makes them capable of recording spatial photos and videos for viewing on Apple's Vision Pro headset.

More notably for those looking to improve their photo and video shooting, there is now a dedicated camera control "button" along the side of the device. Apple has long pitched that the iPhone was on par with DSLRs, and this dedicated button may make it even easier to capture moments and memories.

Clicking the button takes a photo while sliding can adjust zoom. Double pressing can switch modes or settings. Apple says the "camera control" will be usable in third-party apps.

Based on the time that CNET's Lisa Eadicicco spent trying the Phone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Camera Control seems like a lot of fun to play with. You can access different settings and controls by sliding your finger across the sensor like a touchpad. It feels like a button and a touchpad in one, building on the idea Apple introduced with its QuickTake feature on the iPhone 11, which lets you record a video by holding the shutter button.

iphone-16-camera-capture

The iPhone 16's Camera Control "button" lets you launch the camera without touching the screen.

CNET will need to spend more time with the iPhone 16 before deciding how useful Camera Control is and how well it works. But so far, it seems like a useful way to manage camera settings and shooting modes without obscuring the screen with your finger.

The more interesting use for Camera Control, though, is a new tool Apple is calling "visual intelligence." You'll be able to press and hold the Camera Control button to quickly point the iPhone's camera at a place or object to learn more about it, almost like Google Lens. It's another sign that tech companies are positioning the camera as a tool not just for capturing photos but for learning more about the world around you.

Google and OpenAI, for example, have both been touting the way their mobile virtual assistants can answer questions and process requests based on images and text. But this feature won't be available at launch; Apple says it's coming later this year.

As for camera specs, the main camera remains a 48-megapixel shooter (capable of 2x telephoto shots at 12 megapixels), while there is a new ultrawide sensor that Apple says "can capture up to 2.6x more light."

iPhone 16's design includes Action button

iphone-16-action-button

The iPhone 16 now has the Action button, which was only on the Pro models last year.

The camera button isn't the only new addition to the iPhone 16 line, with both models gaining an "Action" button similar to what was added to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max last year. This button lets you set shortcuts to open specific apps or tasks (like setting the phone to "Do Not Disturb," opening the flashlight or setting a direct coffee order from Dunkin' ). It's a small change, but a practical one that should make the base iPhone more personal and customizable.

Displays for the new phones will be similar to 2024's iPhone 15 and 15 Plus: 6.1 inches on the smaller model and 6.7 inches on the larger Plus. Those looking for larger displays will need to look at the new  iPhone 16 Pro (now 6.3 inches) and 16 Pro Max models (now 6.9 inches). The Pro models will also have improved cameras and even faster processors.

new iphone 13 presentation

iPhone 16's 'bigger battery'

All iPhone 16 models will run iOS 18  on the new A18 processor, which is capable of tapping into the company's new Apple Intelligence AI features. Apple says the iPhone 16 will have a "bigger battery," but it didn't reveal how much longer the battery will last during the presentation.

Looking at the specs page , Apple now says that the iPhone 16 will have 2 more hours of video playback compared with the iPhone 15 (for both watching videos stored locally and streaming videos). The iPhone 16 Plus will have 1 more hour of local video playback and 4 more hours of streaming video playback.

Like the iPhone 15 line, the phones will be able to physically charge over USB-C or wirelessly over MagSafe or Qi2. MagSafe charging can now take advantage of faster 25-watt speeds, an increase from the max of 15 watts on the iPhone 15. (Qi-based wireless charging remains at 15 watts for Qi2 chargers and 7.5 watts for older Qi chargers.)

iphone-16-colors

The iPhone 16's new color options

The new base iPhone 16 and 16 Plus colors are white, black, ultramarine (blue), teal (green) and pink, and they look bright and colorful in person.

Between the new Camera Control and Action button, along with a new processor and camera improvements, the iPhone 16 seems like a notable improvement over the iPhone 15. But the big question on everyone's minds will likely be whether Apple Intelligence is worth the upgrade, since these new phones are among the only models to run Apple's new AI features. We'll know more once we've had the chance to spend more time with it and when Apple Intelligence rolls out.

PRESS RELEASE

Powered by the A18 Pro chip and built for Apple Intelligence, the Pro lineup introduces larger display sizes, Camera Control, innovative pro camera features, and a huge leap in battery life

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today introduced iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max , featuring Apple Intelligence, larger display sizes, new creative capabilities with innovative pro camera features, stunning graphics for immersive gaming, and more — all powered by the A18 Pro chip. With Apple Intelligence, powerful Apple-built generative models come to iPhone in the easy-to-use personal intelligence system that understands personal context to deliver intelligence that is helpful and relevant while protecting user privacy. Camera Control unlocks a fast, intuitive way to tap into visual intelligence and easily interact with the advanced camera system. Featuring a new 48MP Fusion camera with a faster quad-pixel sensor that enables 4K120 fps video recording in Dolby Vision, these new Pro models achieve the highest resolution and frame-rate combination ever available on iPhone. Additional advancements include a new 48MP Ultra Wide camera for higher-resolution photography, including macro; a 5x Telephoto camera on both Pro models; and studio-quality mics to record more true-to-life audio. The durable titanium design is strong yet lightweight, with larger display sizes, the thinnest borders on any Apple product, and a huge leap in battery life — with iPhone 16 Pro Max offering the best battery life on iPhone ever.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available in four stunning finishes: black titanium, natural titanium, white titanium, and desert titanium. Pre-orders begin Friday, September 13, with availability beginning Friday, September 20.

“Powered by the faster, more efficient A18 Pro chip and built for Apple Intelligence, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are the most advanced iPhone models we’ve ever made,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers who are looking for the best possible iPhone will be able to take advantage of this huge step forward, whether they’re applying edits to a photo without lifting a finger, rewriting meeting notes for a more professional tone, or using the advanced camera system to capture their next masterpiece in 4K120 fps in Dolby Vision — all while enjoying extraordinary battery life.”

Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 lineup harnesses the power of Apple silicon and Apple-built generative models to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. Apple Intelligence maintains the privacy and security of user data with Private Cloud Compute. This groundbreaking approach provides the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers — an extraordinary step forward for privacy in artificial intelligence. Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update, with the first set of features rolling out next month in U.S. English for most regions around the world.

With systemwide Writing Tools, users can adjust notes or emails to be more friendly, more concise, or add a more professional tone to their writing; check for grammar, word choice, and sentence structure; and summarize selected text to make it more digestible. In the Notes and Phone apps, users can also record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call in the Phone app, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to recall key points.

Apple Intelligence helps users prioritize with summarized notifications, along with Priority Messages in Mail, a feature that understands the content of emails and surfaces time-sensitive messages. Across a user’s inbox, summaries convey the most important information of each email instead of previewing the first few lines.

Siri becomes more deeply integrated into the system experience and gets a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when active. With richer language-understanding capabilities, communicating with Siri is more natural and flexible. Siri follows along when users stumble over their words, and maintains context from one request to the next. Users can type to Siri at any time, and switch fluidly between text and voice as they accelerate everyday tasks. Siri also now has extensive product knowledge to answer thousands of questions about features on iPhone and other Apple devices.

Additional Apple Intelligence features will roll out later this year and in the months following, including Image Playground, which allows users to create playful images in moments. Emoji will be taken to an entirely new level with the ability to create original Genmoji by simply typing a description, or by selecting a photo of a friend or family member. Siri will be able to draw on a user’s personal context to deliver intelligence that is tailored to them. It will also gain onscreen awareness to understand and take action with users’ content, as well as take hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps. And while using iOS 18 features like Siri and Writing Tools, users will be able to easily access ChatGPT from OpenAI.

The new Pro lineup features the thinnest borders of any Apple product and introduces larger display sizes: 6.3 inches on iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches on iPhone 16 Pro Max — the largest iPhone display ever. 1 The stunning Super Retina XDR displays with Always-On and ProMotion technologies help users accomplish more. Both models offer industry-leading durability with a strong, lightweight titanium design, as well as the latest-generation Ceramic Shield, which has an advanced formulation that is 2x tougher than glass on any other smartphone. The new mechanical architecture improves heat dissipation and efficiency for up to 20 percent better sustained performance. Along with the new internal design and advanced power management of iOS 18 , larger batteries are optimized to offer a huge leap in battery life.

Camera Control — a result of thoughtful hardware and software integration — makes the pro camera system more versatile with an innovative new way to quickly launch the camera, take a photo, and start video recording. It has a tactile switch that powers the click experience, a high-precision force sensor that enables the light press gesture, and a capacitive sensor that allows for touch interactions. A new camera preview helps users frame the shot and adjust other control options — such as zoom, exposure, or depth of field — to compose a stunning photo or video by sliding their finger on the Camera Control. Later this fall, Camera Control will be updated with a two-stage shutter to automatically lock focus and exposure on a subject with a light press, letting users reframe the shot without losing focus. Additionally, developers will be able to bring Camera Control to third-party apps such as Kino, which will offer users the ability to adjust white balance and set focus points, including at various levels of depth in their scene.

Later this year, Camera Control will unlock visual intelligence to help users learn about objects and places faster than ever before. Users can click and hold Camera Control to pull up the hours or ratings for a restaurant they pass, add an event from a flyer to their calendar, quickly identify a dog by breed, and more. Camera Control will also serve as a gateway into third-party tools with specific domain expertise, like when users want to search on Google to find where they can buy an item, or to benefit from ChatGPT’s problem-solving skills. Users are in control of when third-party tools are used and what information is shared.

With iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the world’s favorite camera gets even more powerful. Powered by A18 Pro, the upgraded camera system introduces a new 48MP Fusion camera with a faster, more efficient quad-pixel sensor and Apple Camera Interface, unlocking 4K120 fps video recording in Dolby Vision — the highest resolution and frame-rate combination ever available on iPhone, and a smartphone first. The quad-pixel sensor can read data 2x faster, enabling zero shutter lag for 48MP ProRAW or HEIF photos. A new 48MP Ultra Wide camera also features a quad-pixel sensor with autofocus, so users can take higher-resolution 48MP ProRAW and HEIF images when capturing uniquely framed, wider-angle shots or getting close to their subjects with macro photography. The powerful 5x Telephoto camera now comes on both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, allowing users to catch the action from farther away, no matter which model they choose. iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max now take spatial photos in addition to videos to help users relive memories with remarkable depth on Apple Vision Pro.

Users can capture 4K120 fps in Slo-mo or Video mode, and adjust the playback speed after capture in the Photos app, including a quarter-speed playback, a new half-speed option for a dreamy effect, and a fifth-speed option that corresponds to 24 fps. When coupled with the new image signal processor (ISP) of A18 Pro, users can do frame-by-frame cinema-quality color grading for 4K120 fps in Dolby Vision. Users can also capture 4K120 fps ProRes and Log directly to an external storage device for efficient pro workflows.

Both Pro models feature four new studio-quality mics that preserve true-to-life recorded sounds, and video can now be captured in Spatial Audio for immersive listening with AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, or a surround sound system. The iPhone 16 Pro lineup also introduces creative new ways to edit video sound with Audio Mix — allowing users to adjust their sound after capture to focus on the voice of the person on camera, make it sound like the video was recorded inside a professional studio, or position vocal tracks in the front and environmental noises in surround sound. With wind noise reduction, powerful machine learning (ML) algorithms reduce unwanted noise for better audio quality.

Next-generation Photographic Styles help users express their creativity and customize their photos by locally adjusting color, highlights, and shadows in real time. Styles also have a deeper understanding of skin undertones, so users can personalize how they appear in photos. Unlike filters, which often use a one-size-fits-all approach by adding a color to an entire scene, adjustments are applied to specific colors of a selected style. A wider set of styles offers more creative options for editing a photo’s aesthetic, and styles can be further personalized with an easy-to-use new control pad and intensity slider for simultaneous adjustments across tone and color. These adjustments can be rendered during live preview, applied after a photo is taken, or even reversed later.

Apple Intelligence takes the pro camera system to a new level. Coming later, Siri will be able to complete in-app requests and take action across apps, like pulling up a specific shot from a user’s Photos library and then applying an edit to the image in Darkroom. Siri can also help users fully utilize the wide range of photo and editing capabilities, such as asking how to adjust the blur in the background of a photo.

The new A18 Pro chip is designed with industry-leading compute power to propel Apple Intelligence, ushering in a new era of pro performance. Built with second-generation 3-nanometer technology and featuring a new architecture with smaller, faster transistors, A18 Pro delivers unprecedented efficiency. The new 16-core Neural Engine is faster and more efficient than the previous generation, powering remarkable on-device performance for Apple Intelligence. A 17 percent increase in total system memory bandwidth — the highest ever in iPhone — enables faster experiences when using Writing Tools and Image Playground, and helps deliver astounding graphics. The bandwidth increase also benefits the 6-core GPU, which is up to 20 percent faster than the previous generation, driving graphics rendering for Apple Intelligence and stunning visuals for gaming. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing gets up to 2x faster for even more realistic light sources and reflections, and Game Mode in iOS 18 unlocks more consistent frame rates while making AirPods, game controllers, and other wireless accessories incredibly responsive. A new 6-core CPU is the fastest in a smartphone, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores that can run the same workload as the previous generation 15 percent faster while using 20 percent less power. Next-generation ML accelerators are optimized for Apple Intelligence, and save power by handling high-efficiency, high-throughput, and low-latency computations on the CPU without engaging the Neural Engine.

A18 Pro enables Always-On and ProMotion technologies for an exceptional viewing experience on iPhone, as well as faster USB 3 speeds and ProRes video recording. A new ISP and video encoder process 2x the amount of data for faster video encoding and pro workflows.

The iPhone 16 Pro lineup features innovative ways to stay connected and provides enhanced safety capabilities for peace of mind. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as Emergency SOS via satellite, users are able to connect to the nearest satellite to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS while outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. 2 Messages via satellite in iOS 18 are end-to-end encrypted. Also new with iOS 18, Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share a live video feed or photos with participating emergency dispatchers during an emergency call. 3 Later this fall, Roadside Assistance via satellite — which connects users to a roadside assistance provider if they have car trouble while off the grid — expands beyond the U.S. to the U.K.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are designed with the environment in mind. As part of Apple 2030, the company’s ambitious goal to be carbon neutral across its entire carbon footprint by the end of this decade, Apple is prioritizing renewable electricity in manufacturing, and investing in wind and solar projects around the world to address the electricity used to charge all Apple products, including the iPhone 16 lineup. Today, all Apple facilities run on 100 percent renewable electricity — including the data centers that power Apple Intelligence.

To achieve Apple 2030, the company is also designing products with recycled and renewable materials. iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature more than 25 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the internal structural frame and 80 percent or more recycled steel across multiple components. The battery is made with 100 percent recycled cobalt and — in a first for iPhone — over 95 percent recycled lithium. 4 The iPhone 16 Pro lineup also meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency, and is free of mercury and PVC. The packaging is entirely fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of removing plastic from its packaging by next year.

Pricing and Availability

  • The display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 6.27 inches (iPhone 16 Pro) or 6.85 inches (iPhone 16 Pro Max) diagonally. Actual viewable area is less.
  • Apple’s satellite features are included for free for two years starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 14 or later. For Emergency SOS via satellite availability, visit support.apple.com/en-us/HT213426 . Messages via satellite will be available in the U.S. and Canada in iOS 18. SMS availability will depend on carrier. Carrier fees may apply. Users should check with their carrier for details. Roadside Assistance via satellite is currently available in the U.S. with AAA and Verizon Roadside Assistance, and is launching in the U.K. with Green Flag this fall. Participating roadside assistance providers may charge for services, and iPhone users who are not members can take advantage of their roadside assistance services on a pay-per-use basis. Apple’s satellite services were designed for use in open spaces with a clear line of sight to the sky. Performance may be impacted by obstructions such as trees or surrounding buildings.
  • Emergency SOS Live Video will be available in the U.S. in iOS 18.
  • All cobalt and lithium references are on a mass balance allocation.
  • 128GB storage capacity is available on iPhone 16 Pro.

Ios 17.7: apple launches new update for iphone users avoiding ios 18.

One of the very last iOS 17 updates is here because iOS 18 is out now. If that sounds confusing, here’s the reasoning. Every phone that runs iOS 17 can run iOS 18, too. But not everyone wants to leap on board with a newest update on day one. So iOS 17 provides the security and bug fixes without the uncertainties of iOS 18.

iPhone 15 is the last iPhone that can use iOS 17. All new iPhone 16 models will come with iOS 18 ... [+] pre-loaded.

Which iPhones Can Run iOS 17.7?

All currently available iPhones from the iPhone Xs onwards can run iOS 17. That means it’s also for the iPhone Xs Max and iPhone XR released in 2018. All subsequent iPhones are also compatible. That means the iPhone 11 series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 14 series and iPhone 15 series. This also includes iPhone SE second- and third-generation models.

How To Get It

To update is straightforward enough: open the Settings app, click on General, then Software Update. Here you can choose to download the new software immediately, which will usually mean it’s on your iPhone sooner. Pick Download and Install, and it’ll be on your phone pronto.

What’s In The Release

There are no new features mentioned by Apple, and it’s clear that this update is focused on bug fixes. Apple’s notes read: “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users.”

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

In other words, the security updates that are part of iOS 18 are also available here. Fellow Forbes contributor Kate O’Flaherty talks about the security issues here .

Apple won’t be doing this dual-release system throughout the whole year that iOS 18 is available. Rather, it is likely to have iOS 17 complementary updates, entirely focused on bugs and other security issues, for perhaps one or two more goes, almost certainly alongside the release of iOS 18 updates. The next scheduled iOS 18 update is iOS 18.1, due in October, with iOS 18.2 expected in December.

But there could easily be smaller updates as we go along. Last year, the sudden overheating of some iPhone 15 models led to an almost unprecedentedly quick software update. That shouldn’t happen this time, by the way, as Apple has redesigned the thermal envelope in the iPhone 16 hardware.

I’ll be reporting on whether or not this release (and indeed iOS 18) are worth upgrading to later in the week.
