Measure Length 1 Lesson

This Year 1 Measure Length 1 lesson covers the prior learning of using everyday language to talk about size, before moving onto the main skill of measuring length using non-standard units.

The lesson starts with a prior learning worksheet to check pupils’ understanding. The interactive lesson slides recap the prior learning before moving on to the main skill. Children can then practise further by completing the activities and can extend their learning by completing an engaging extension task.

Years 1 & 2: Measures

This list consists of visual resources, activities and games designed to support the new curriculum programme of study in Years 1 and 2. Containing tips on using the resources and suggestions for further use, it covers aspects of:

Year 1: Compare, describe and solve practical problems for: lengths and heights, mass/weight, capacity and volume, time, measure and begin to record the following: lengths and heights, mass/weight, capacity and volume, time (hours, minutes, seconds), recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes, sequence events in chronological order using language, recognise and use language relating to dates, days of the week, weeks, months and years, tell the time to the hour and half past the hour, draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

Year 2: Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure: length/height (m/cm); mass (kg/g), temperature (°C), capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =, recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p), combine amounts to make a particular value, find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money, solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change, compare and sequence intervals of time, tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times, know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day.

Visit the primary mathematics webpage to access all lists.

This video shows how one teacher introduces capacity to her class. The idea, which begins at 9mins, on the film involves children estimating the capacity of different containers by drawing the size of puddle they think the liquid inside will produce. Children could order the containers from smallest capacity to largest. They work in pairs to investigate the size of puddles produced using containers of different capacities. This activity provides an opportunity for children to work systematically in a fun, 'hands on' way.

Starting Games

Quality Assured Category: Mathematics Publisher: Unwin Hyman Ltd

This resource contains a wealth of games which practise many aspects of mathematics at levels 1-3.

Guess the length  on page 32 practises estimating the lengths of given lines and measuring them.

Page 52 introduces an activity on comparing the masses of objects in a comparison game, which uses a pan balance. It could be extended into an activity where children practise weighing the objects and reading off scales.

Page 68 practises making sums of money using different coin combinations.

Page 74 is a game in which children recognise times on clockfaces looking at quarter to, quarter past, and half past hour.

Price Lists

This would be great on the interactive whiteboard whilst learning about coins and shopping. It could also be used in small group work. Children decide what they want to buy and work out the total cost. The items are displayed in a sum and also a bill. It can be differentiated for work at different levels.

Money and Measure Activities for Students Aged 5-7
