PhD Degrees in Canada

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Canada are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.

PhD Entry Requirements

Canadian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, there are a number of documents required when submitting your application. They include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal

- PhD Research Proposal

A research proposal is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your program can begin.

How much does a PhD cost in Canada?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive. Candidates can cost between $5,000-$20,000 per year, although this is still considerably cheaper than US or UK equivalents. Dedicated scholarships can help support your PhD, and it is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship .

Admission requirements for PhD programmes in Canada vary by institution and subject, but there are some general eligibility requirements. Prospective applicants must possess a Master’s degree in the same subject for admission to any doctoral programme. Besides this, the other general eligibility requirements for PhD in Canada are

It’s common to be asked for your Grade Point Average (GPA) when applying to a Canadian doctoral programme while submitting your academic transcripts. To get accepted into one of these programmes, applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must also show that they have taken advanced courses in their field of study.

Graduate Admissions Tests

Universities and graduate schools use scores from the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to assess potential students’ aptitude for higher learning. Requirements can change between universities, so be sure to do your research beforehand.

Language Requirements

Depending on your chosen province of study, a Canadian Doctoral degree can be attained in either English or French. While the majority of universities teach primarily in English, those located within Quebec for example may offer instruction exclusively in French.

If you are a native speaker or have already studied the language at the university level, that should be enough to meet the criteria. Otherwise, you must take and pass a language test before submitting your application as part of its requirements.

Work Experience

Having some experience in the field you are applying to can be beneficial, although it’s not always mandatory. Admissions committees may want to know that students have relevant work experience or volunteer activities in their chosen field prior to applying for a doctoral programme in Canada.

Research Statement

Applicants for PhDs are usually required to show a strong interest in research through their statement of purpose or a research proposal. This is an important part of the application process and should detail why you are applying for the programme, what you hope to gain from it, and your future goals. Having a good research statement can help strengthen your application.

Your resume should include the following information: academic achievements, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and awards. It’s important to provide an accurate and detailed description of your qualifications so that admissions committees can get a better idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.

Canadian universities may conduct a PhD interview as an assessment of your application and capability, or simply to become more acquainted with you. You must be prepared to answer questions about your chosen field and research, experience, interests and career aspirations. It is best to research potential topics of discussion before attending such an interview and practice as best you can.

Admission to a doctoral programme in Canada requires two or three academic references from previous professors or employers, who can be contacted for a reference only after you have received their permission. Ensure that your references are aware of their role in the application process so they can provide the most honest and accurate assessment of your abilities and knowledge.

Reaching Out to Potential Supervisors

Potential PhD students should research possible dissertation supervisors and acquaint themselves with the research areas of their prospective Schools prior to applying. This allows them to understand the type of research they would be expected to undertake and make an informed decision. Finally, make sure that you meet all the deadlines for your application and keep a track of all the documentation you are sending. This will help ensure that you submit a complete and accurate application package.

First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

Program Options

Course-based programs.

Course-based pograms, sometimes referred to as professional programs, require a student to complete a set number of courses to obtain a degree. Submission of an individual research thesis is usually not required, but programs may include major projects, capstone courses, internships or other work placements. Course-based programs tend to be shorter in duration and more flexible in program delivery, usually with higher tuition costs. These are often targeted at professionals with some work experience to attain the next career promotion or a change into another field.

View Course-based Programs

Research-based programs

Research-based programs usually include some coursework at the beginning of the degree and then focus on individual independent research under the supervision of a faculty member that culminates in the formulation of a thesis or dissertation. Most master programs require 2 years of study and PhD programs usually require between 5-7 years of study. Research degrees provide the possibility to become an expert in a chosen field of study with the possibility to pursue an academic career as professor as well as exciting careers in non-academic environments. Many UBC programs expect applicants to have obtained a master's level qualification before entering a PhD, although direct entry into PhD progams is possible at UBC.

Common Questions

Do i require an english language test.

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

The value of strong English skills

English is one of the two official languages of Canada, and the primary language of instruction at UBC. Strong English skills mean new students can settle quickly into their academic environment, and get to know their fellow students and faculty members who will be their colleagues during their time at UBC. Students with good English skills are far more likely to succeed; they experience far less stress and get greater enjoyment and fulfillment from their studies.

Applicants are advised to focus on learning how to speak, listen, read, and write in English, independent of studying for the TOEFL (or other tests), as this will best prepare them for communicating in all types of situations. Students with strong English skills are more likely to do well on the TOEFL.

Students from eligible countries planning to apply for a study permit via the Student Direct Stream (SDS) pathway are advised to carefully review the language test eligibility requirements .

Individual graduate programs may require higher English language proficiency scores, and may require minimum scores on individual components of any of the tests. Please check individual program websites to verify English language score requirements.

  • TOEFL ibT Home is accepted for admission to UBC-Vancouver.
  • TOEFL ITP and TOEFL Essentials are  not  accepted for admission.
  • TOEFL MyBest composite scores are not accepted for applications to UBC-Vancouver.
  • Minimum scores must be achieved in a single sitting of the test (i.e. scores from multiple test-taking instances may not be used to satisfy minimum component requirements.)

What are the academic minimum requirements by country?

Applicants should have academic backgrounds within the general requirements listed by country below.

Given that the number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available, a record that satisfies basic entrance requirements does not guarantee admission to graduate studies.

Important note to students with three-year bachelor's degrees from European institutions (except UK): Most three-year, Bologna-compliant degrees from research-intensive universities are acceptable as a basis for admission to master's programs at UBC. Contact the UBC program of interest and see individual country listings below for further information.

How do I submit transcripts and degree parchments?

  • For your INITIAL APPLICATION we only accept scanned copies of original documents or self-uploaded digital copies.
  • If you receive an ADMISSION OFFER , you will have to provide hard copies or secure electronic delivery of academic documents.

Initial Application

Each entry under the Academic History section of the application must include pdf copies of official, up-to-date, transcripts for all current and previous post-secondary study (see exception for current and former UBC students below).

Note : Grade sheets/records are not transcripts and will not be accepted in lieu of copies of official transcripts.

Uploading transcripts in the application system

The application to graduate school must be made under the current/former  CWL (Campus-wide Login) . Applying with the correct CWL will automatically transfer the UBC record into the application.

Official academic documentation for all other post-secondary institutions that have been attended (e.g., exchange year, transfer year, etc.) will need to be uploaded as part of the application.

Applicants with Canadian transcripts (other than UBC) must obtain an official transcript for every post-secondary institution they have attended.

  • Each transcript should be scanned as an individual .pdf file and then uploaded to the application system as indicated.
  • Users of the MyCreds | MesCertif digital service have to download the documents as PDF (see video “How to download my document as a PDF”) and self-upload to the application system. Documents sent via secure electronic delivery to UBC as receiving organization directly will not be accepted for initial application purposes!
  • Please refer to any directions provided by the selected graduate program on naming scanned document files. Otherwise, files should be named: "Applicant Full Name-Document Description.extension"

Examples: Peng Zhang-University of Waterloo Transcript.pdf Peng Zhang-CV.pdf Peng Zhang-Journal of Neurosciences Paper.pdf

  • Transcripts must be scanned front and back.
  • All pages of a transcript must be uploaded as a single file (rather than a separate file for each page).
  • The online application system provides additional, detailed directions on scanning and uploading of documentation.

Applicants must obtain an official transcript for every post-secondary institution they have attended (other than UBC).

  • Each transcript must be scanned as an individual .pdf file and uploaded to the application system as indicated.
  • Scan both sides of the transcript and/or degree certificate where there is information, notations, or stamps from the issuing institution.
  • Please refer to any directions provided by the selected graduate program on naming scanned document files. Otherwise, files should be named: "Applicant Full Name-Document Description.extension"

Examples: Peng Zhang-Peking University Transcript.pdf Peng Zhang-Peking University Transcript English Translation.pdf Peng Zhang-CV.pdf Peng Zhang-Journal of Neurosciences Paper.pdf

  • Each transcript must be uploaded as a single file (rather than a separate file for each page).
  • If you have documents that are issued in a language other than English, then, in addition to uploading digital copies of the documents in their original language, you must also upload a certified literal English translation of your transcripts from your home university's translation service or a certified English translator.
  • The online application system provides additional, detailed directions on scanning and uploading of academic documentation.

After Being offered Admission

Conditional admission offers are made based on documents uploaded to the application system. Once an offer of admission is received:

  • A list of required transcripts will be posted in the applicant's online portal.
  • Note: UBC reserves the right to also require any individual applicant to provide official transcripts for study of less than one year duration.
  • Do not send official transcripts before receiving an offer of admission unless special instructions were received from the selected graduate program.
  • Applicants will not be allowed to register in a graduate program until the initial transcript requirements are met.

How to Submit Official Academic Documents

To be considered official, academic records must either be received in official university envelopes, sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution, or be received via secure electronic delivery from the issuing institution.

If you applied with your CWL account, your transcript will have been received electronically. No hard copies of UBC transcripts are required. Please ensure to submit official documents of any other institutions.

Documents being provided to meet conditions of admission should be sent directly to:

Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies The University of British Columbia 170 - 6371 Crescent Rd Vancouver, BC CANADA  V6T 1Z2

Applicants from Canadian institutions that participate in the MyCreds | MesCertif service for secure electronic delivery should follow the instructions below under "secure electronic delivery."

If your university issues only one original set of academic documents (transcripts/degree certificates):

Make photocopies of your original academic documents and send them to your home university. Ask your home university to:

  • Verify that the photocopies are consistent with their records.
  • Attest that the copies are true photocopies and stamp them with an official university stamp.
  • Put the attested, stamped photocopies in sealed envelopes endorsed by the Registrar.
  • Mail the sealed, endorsed envelopes directly to Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

If your academic documents are issued in a language other than English:

  • Order a set of academic documents in the original language along with certified literal English translations from your home university's translation service.

If your home university does not provide English translation:

  • Photocopy a set of your documents.
  • Take the copy to a certified English translator and order a complete, word-by-word, literal English translation.
  • Direct the translator to put both the original language photocopy and the English translation into a sealed envelope, and endorse the envelope by signing across the seal.
  • Send the sealed, endorsed envelopes from the translator to UBC Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.
  • Important : Remember that UBC will still require a set of official academic documents received directly from your home institution.

Note: Academic records must be translated in their entirety, including any information that appears on the reverse side of any document.

UBC does not accept the following:

  • Photocopies that have not been stamped, attested and endorsed by the Registrar at your home university
  • Documents in envelopes that have been opened
  • Documents that do not arrive in sealed envelopes endorsed by the issuing institution or certified translator
  • Documents that arrive without the official seal of the university
  • Photocopies notarized by a notary public
  • Photocopies endorsed by a lawyer, professor, judge etc.
  • Unofficial translations
  • Non-literal translations

Do not order academic records that are not in sealed and endorsed envelopes, or not sent by secure electronic delivery. It will only delay the processing of your application.

Documents being provided by post/courier to meet conditions of admission must be sent directly to:

See below for information on meeting the condition of admission with secure electronic documents.

Document Ownership

Documents submitted in support of applications become the property of the University and are not returned to the applicant or student. Refer to the UBC Academic Calendar statement on ownership of application documents .

Where is UBC and what is the campus like?

The University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus is located at the western tip of the Point Grey Peninsula, close to the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. UBC's second campus - Okanagan campus - is located in Kelowna, about 5 hours north-east of Vancouver.

UBC's Point Grey (Vancouver) campus, sits on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation .

The University Endowment Lands community (also known as University Hill) is situated adjacent to the campus to the east, while 763 hectares of forested parkland known as Pacific Spirit Regional Park serves as a "green belt" between Vancouver and the campus.

The main campus is bounded by Chancellor Boulevard to the northwest, Marine Drive to the southwest, Wesbrook Mall to the northeast, and West 16th Avenue to the southeast. This represents the administrative and educational core of UBC.

The South Campus is bounded by Southwest Marine Drive to the south, West 16th Avenue to the northwest, and Pacific Spirit Park to the northeast. The South Campus houses many research facilities.

The East Campus is bounded by West 16th Avenue on the south, Wesbrook Mall on the west, Acadia Road on the east, and on the north its border zigzags from Toronto Road to Agronomy Road to Fairview Avenue. A large part of the East Campus is made up of student, faculty and staff housing, along with child care buildings and the local police and fire department. UBC's first market housing development, known as Hampton Place, is also located here.

Although many buildings on campus are quite new, the University's history actually dates back to 1877.

Campus locations

Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is responsible for the majority of graduate students at the Vancouver campus, including those who study at many of the affiliated facilities in the city of Vancouver and BC. The majority of graduate programs are offered at the Point Grey campus or the affiliated facilities , one program (Digital Media) is offered at the Great Northern Way Campus (Vancouver) and few programs such as the Master of Health Administration and business programs are offered at UBC Robson Square (Downtown Vancouver). If you are interested in the Okanagan campus (Kelowna, BC), please visit the website of the College of Graduate Studies .

Campus Tours

Due to the diversity of our many research facilities, we do not offer campus tours specifically for graduate students. However, individual departments or research groups may offer open houses or other outreach events that may allow you to visit their facilities. Please check on the websites of individual departments or programs for such opportunities.

You can enjoy one of our many self-guided campus walking tours, such as from the Sustainability Initiative or the Art Outdoor Tour . Or you may decide to walk in Pacific Spirit Regional Park .

Or try out one of these five 30 minute walking maps:

  • Main Mall Trail
  • Sword Fern Trail
  • Thunderbird Trail
  • Tower Beach Trail
  • Wreck Beach Trail

Once you're here, there are several options for getting around campus—you can walk, bike and for longer distances there are  convenient and accessible shuttle buses  to get you where you need to go. Find more information on how to get around campus .

If you have a temporary or permanent condition that limits your mobility, the  Accessibility Shuttle  can help you get around areas of campus that can only be reached on foot. The shuttle is a free, shared-ride service; you can book up to three trips a day. Each building in the service area is within 100 meters of a shuttle stop.

How much will it cost?

UBC is located in one of the most livable cities in the world which affects living costs - a challenge that many major metropolitan centres face. Your perception of costs may depend on from where you will be joining UBC. If you are relocating from a similarly popular metropolis, costs may be comparable. For others, the costs may come as a surprise. G+PS provides this estimator as a starting point to create a financial plan and budget. Please note that the estimator can only provide estimates and broad projections. We cannot guarantee availability of listed rates. We link to relevant sources for you to verify data and account for market changes since we last updated our data.

UBC expects you to assume primary responsibility for covering the cost of your education and supporting any family members who might accompany you. It is especially important to plan your finances for the entire duration of the degree. G+PS provides average completion times for most graduate programs in the degree listing under the heading "Enrolment, Duration & Other Stats". Financial awards may be restricted in their duration and in many cases end after four years. With help of the completion data and this annual cost estimator, you can plan a multi-year budget and account for a possible funding drop which usually occurs in upper years.

How to apply for a PhD in Canada

If you are an international student planning to apply to a canadian university to study a phd, this guide will answer all the questions you might have, jens locher, .css-76pyzs{margin-right:0.25rem;} ,, shane moore, julian dierkes.

Once you’ve decided to apply for a postgraduate programme, starting the application process can often be the hardest part. If you’re planning to pursue your PhD in Canada, this guide will help you understand the application process and how to write a research proposal.

While this guide covers the main questions that students might have around applying for a PhD in Canada, it is important to check the requirements for your university and ask the admissions team if you have any questions about the process.

How do I apply to do a PhD in Canada as an international student?

Once you have decided to apply to a PhD programme in Canada, you can use degree databases to find which university offers PhDs in your area of interest, such as  Universities Canada or provincial bodies such as Education Planner BC . Search engines or other global commercial degree directories may also help you identify a suitable programme.

Alternatively, you could search for which faculty members conduct research in your area via publication databases and then look up the universities where they teach.

If you already know which university you are most interested in, you should look at both its departmental/programme web pages and the pages of a central graduate school if applicable.

Unlike at undergraduate level, where you can apply via a central application system, application to graduate programmes is usually targeted to each programme, which can vary across institutions.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a PhD ?

We recommend that applicants check the admissions requirements for their programme of interest.

In terms of qualities admission committees may be looking for, these will vary by subject area – for example graduate programmes in natural sciences may look for different attributes from those in the performing arts.

Graduate students in Canada are usually expected to work independently and be self-directed. As such, applicants may want to provide evidence of how they have taken initiative and shown self-direction and perseverance. Passion, curiosity, focus, commitment, collegiality and enthusiasm are all qualities that applicants may find mentioned on programme websites.

How do I look for a PhD supervisor?

The first step would be to check with your programme of interest to see if contact with a supervisor is encouraged or required. Processes vary and some programmes assign you supervisors based on interests identified in your application, some require commitment from a supervisor prior to the application, and some may determine supervisors after some initial coursework or rotations.

If a programme requires you to contact potential supervisors, begin by researching faculty members and their research topics. Most universities, including the University of British Columbia  (UBC), have a research supervisor database where prospective students can search faculty.

Candidates should read recent papers by potential supervisors and look for a good match between their own interests and those of the faculty member. Reading graduate student stories can also help, as applicants will be able to see current research projects students are working on, and get a sense of the faculty or programme they are looking into.

Once you have found a faculty member you would like to work with, you can reach out to them individually. Prospective students should be aware that academics often receive many such requests every week. Plan carefully who to contact and customise each message to the particular faculty member, explaining your research interests and why you are interested in working with them.

Everything you need to know about studying in Canada Everything international students need to know about student visas in Canada

How should I write my research proposal?

Your research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It gives a sense of how prepared you are to conduct research and what directions of research you’re likely to pursue. A specific proposal is more likely to impress than some general ideas.

Your research areas and interests may change once you have entered your programme, so you will not be held to the ideas you’ve proposed. However, it gives prospective supervisors a sense of how your research aligns with theirs and that of the department in general.

Be sure to stay within the word count requested, and of course it’s essential you avoid any spelling or grammatical errors. We always recommend that applicants write several iterations of their research proposal and gain feedback from friends, colleagues and, if possible, professors at each stage. When you approach previous professors for a letter of reference, it’s worth sharing your proposal to get their feedback on it.

When should I start applying?

Applicants need to meet the application deadlines, which are often a year or more in advance of the desired start date (eg apply in December to start the following September). On top of that it is important to allocate enough time to prepare and complete various steps to be able to submit a completed application in time.

International applicants will need to ensure there is enough time to take the required English language tests. Applicants should also check if they have to complete any other courses before applying and that they have enough time to collect the necessary documentation and proofread everything.

We recommend that prospective students review application timelines for their programme of interest and then plan backwards, ensuring they have time to complete all aspects of the application. All the steps may take longer than expected, so give yourself extra time to compile the strongest possible application.

How long will the application process take?

This will depend on each university, programme and sometimes supervisor. Once you have applied, the process will probably take a further two to three months at least. At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be:

  • Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
  • Reference letters
  • Statement of interest/research statement
  • English language test scores
  • Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants.

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

What would be your top pieces of advice for an international student applying for a PhD?

Deciding to go to graduate school is a big decision and often a difficult one if you do not have a clear understanding of what it will be like. It is important to go to graduate school for the right reasons, including:

  • Being interested in a given field.
  • Desiring to be part of an intellectual or professional community.
  • Gaining qualifications for career progression.
  • Acquiring expertise to change sector or professional area.
  • Gaining experience and entry requirements for an academic career.

Also, it is important to think about where you would like to study. Location and lifestyle can make a significant difference. Think about how this will affect your life, and importantly, is it a place where you could live in the future?

Regarding being successful in the process, preparation is key. Most universities provide a lot of information on their websites about the process and how to prepare strong applications. Make use of these resources, take the time to read the advice and treat the application itself as an opportunity to show that you possess key qualities faculty members are looking for, such as paying attention to detail, and writing ability.

Canada scholarships promise a fully or partially funded path to study, work and build a life in one of the most popular countries in the world.

Official data from the Canadian Bureau for International Education showed more than  800,000 international students had active student visas in 2022, up from 275,000 in 2012.

With its welcoming immigration policies and top-ranked universities, it’s little wonder Canada has become a popular study abroad destination.

It is so popular that there is now not enough decent, affordable accommodation for international students, with 25 students reportedly resorting to sleeping in tents on the side of the road .

In response, there is ongoing discussion to limit the number of international students allowed into Canada — the first of its kind.

Canadian Housing Minister Sean Fraser says this limit was “one of the options that we ought to consider,” BBC  reports.

Many universities rejected this idea swiftly, saying that tying international students to the country’s housing crisis is “deeply concerning.”

Canada targets to welcome 1.5 million new immigrants by 2025 — students are a key group it recognises for bringing “tremendous economic, cultural and social benefits” to the country.

By offering high-quality educational institutions and opportunities to work (for up to three years after graduation) or immigrate, it has attracted hundreds of thousands to the country, like Nakul and Nishul Juneja.

Being able to stay and work in Canada was a big factor for the identical twins, who pursued their MBA  at the University of Toronto Rotman’s School of Management after completing their bachelor’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Today, with a Canadian MBA in hand, Nakul is an Associate with McKinsey & Company and Nishul is a Senior Product Manager at Amazon.

Canada scholarships offer international students a clear path to similar success.

Tips to win scholarships from a winner of scholarships

canada scholarships

There are many Canada scholarships for students, if you know where to look. Source: Ryan Sutherland

Sutherland’s proven tips for scholarship triumph include:

  • Start early: Start extremely early if you want to get a competitive scholarship.
  • Know your deadlines: Sutherland always had an Excel document with all the deadlines. As he explains, some scholarship applications take up to 15 minutes, while he spends a longer time with other applications.
  • The more, the merrier: Think about your other “identities.” Some organisations like the United Nations offer scholarships or jobs if you’re working for one of those organisations. Some companies may say the benefit of working for them is getting a master’s degree for free.
  • Make your application unique, but don’t do twice the work: Try to make your application relevant to how your career has developed currently and relevant for the times. If there’s a political movement happening at the time or you’re involved in activism or public service relevant to a particular scholarship, mention these in your scholarship applications.

Upgrading from general to honours degree (honour's equivalency), completing a second degree, graduate studies.

If you already have a degree and would like to take additional undergraduate or graduate courses, or strengthen your degree to apply to graduate school, you should apply as a Non-Degree student.

You must already hold a degree which is recognized as equivalent to a Canadian university's undergraduate or graduate degree. You will be asked to submit official transcripts of your previous academic work. This category is not normally open to applicants who do not meet University of Guelph continuation of study or transfer requirements.

If you have not previously registered at the University of Guelph, apply through the  Ontario Universities’ Application Centre . The program code for Non-Degree Studies is GND and you will need to indicate the degree you previously hold in the ‘Subject of Major Interest’ section.

If you have ever registered at the University of Guelph, apply using the  Application for Internal Transfer and Readmission .

If you already hold an undergraduate general degree (3 year) and wish to upgrade to the equivalent of an honours degree (4 year), you may apply to obtain an  Honours Equivalent .

Current University of Guelph degree holders may also augment an honours degree by completing an additional specialization (e.g., i.e. an additional major or minor)..

Students who are granted the Honours Equivalent designation do not receive a second degree parchment and do not participate in a convocation program. Upon completion, the designation will appear on their official transcript.

To be granted an Honours Equivalent, students must satisfy the University of Guelph Academic Residence Requirements. In addition, students must satisfy the conditions for graduation for the specified honours program using the Calendar that is in effect for the semester to which they have been admitted.

PhD researcher draws on refugee experience to study plight of asylum-seekers in Canada

""

Jona Zyfi, a doctoral candidate at the Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies, is using a human rights lens to explore the links between technology and migration (supplied image)

Published: August 14, 2024

By Cynthia Macdonald

Jona Zyfi ’s life has so far been an “adventurous story” full of fear, hope, resilience and relief.

At age seven, Zyfi was smuggled into Australia under a false name as a child refugee claimant. At 16, after a forced return to her native Albania, she emigrated to Canada carrying only a suitcase and teddy bear.

Now a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies, Zyfi is examining how public policy shapes the plight of asylum seekers and migrants in Canada. Her work is shedding valuable light on some of the little-known – and sometimes shocking – injustices faced by refugee claimants in a country widely thought to be among the most welcoming and multicultural in the world.

“The work that I do is very much informed by my lived experiences,” she says. “It’s where I find the strength to do it.”

Why is Zyfi examining the refugee experience through the lens of criminology and not political science?

“Lots of people have asked me that,” she says. “Even I had moments when I’d wonder, ‘Am I in the right department?’ But the deeper I go into my research, the more confirmation I get that I am doing the right thing.”

This is due to the phenomenon of “crimmigration,”  a term that’s used to describe how refugee claimants are often subjected to processes normally associated with the criminal justice system.

“Immigration is an administrative field, while the criminal justice system is a lot more heavy-handed,” Zyfi explains. “And yet, we’re using criminal justice mechanisms to deal with what should be an administrative process. That doesn’t make sense.”

In some ways, she says, Canada’s approach to refugees is a good news story.

In the last decade, for example, the country has welcomed more than 40,000 Syrian refugees, and has been in the vanguard of acceptance for those fleeing persecution on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

But there is darker side, too. Many Canadians are unaware that children can be held in detention with or without their parents and that adult asylum seekers who can’t be accommodated in holding centres have been detained in provincial jails alongside those serving criminal sentences.

Canada is also one of the few countries in the Global North where there is no legal limit on detention, meaning that claimants can spend years in jails or holding centres before their cases are heard.

“They rarely get access to legal aid and many of them can’t speak the language,” Zyfi says. “So they don’t even understand what’s happening. They’re unaware of their rights and terrified of being deported.”

Zyfi says she is particularly interested in the role technology plays in immigration and asylum processes and application assessment procedures. In an effort to reduce dependence on migrant detention, some asylum seekers are now granted temporary freedom but monitored in ways that are highly controversial.

These methods include the use of electronic ankle monitors as well as voice reporting via cellphone – both of which can fail if batteries or cell reception run out. Facial recognition software is also gaining in popularity.

But even a small technical mistake, Zyfi argues, can place a claimant’s life in danger. “There’s this idea that technology is going to solve all our problems,” says Zyfi. “It’s going to make faster decisions, better decisions. The decisions are faster, but that doesn’t always mean that they are better.”

Zyfi’s concern about the rights of asylum seekers is born from her own experiences.

Born shortly after the fall of communism in Albania, her early life was spent amid the anarchy and civil insurrection that followed the collapse of the country’s economy. “We had to hide under the tables, because bullets could fly through at any minute,” she recalls. “One flew through our balcony window. The arms depots were open; anybody could get bullets, a grocery bag full of grenades, whatever they could find. It was a free-for-all.”

Using a false name, Zyfi made her way to Australia with her mother and sister via a human smuggling network. But the family was expelled from Australia in 2005 when Albania was deemed to be a safe country of origin. “I remember my mother packing up our entire life in a shipping container,” she says.

Four years later, Zyfi came to Canada and two years ago, after a lengthy series of applications and various immigration statuses, she was finally granted citizenship.

Now, she is firmly committed to making life better for other migrants and refugees, including by giving them a bigger say in decisions that affect them. In policymaking, “our stories are not being incorporated in a meaningful way,” she says. “To me, that is the saddest part.”

The groundswell of private support for Syrian refugees – Zyfi herself was an enthusiastic sponsor – shows that caring for survivors of global crisis is a Canadian value. But she says that civil society alone cannot provide the support needed, and the government can do more – not only for immigrants deemed to be economically desirable, but for those whose lives are in jeopardy.

“Historically, immigration has been key to the Canadian economy. It has also been a fundamental tenet of nation-building and multiculturalism,” Zyfi says. “But we are doing the bare minimum. We have the capacity to do so much more.”

Canada's housing crisis is adversely affecting international students, University of Waterloo study finds

'they face discrimination [and] fall victim to fraud a lot,' researcher says.

Social Sharing

A new study led by a team of researchers at the University of Waterloo's faculty of environment has found that international students are among the most vulnerable people impacted by the current housing crisis.

"They experience very similar challenges regarding the lack of affordable, suitable quality housing similar to other groups — newcomers, low income families in Canada and other students. They face discrimination [and] fall victim to fraud a lot," researcher Alkim Karaagac told CBC News.

We have seen several levels of sources of housing pressure for international student families. - Alkim Karaagac, researcher, University of Waterloo

Karaagac said that at the federal level, the research found that there are fewer building programs for universities, provincial-level higher education institutions funding is frozen for decades, and there is limited or nonexistent family housing or student housing in general.

"We have seen several levels of sources of housing pressure for international student families," Karaagac said.

  • Region of Waterloo one step closer to tackling affordable housing crisis
  • Well-being of people in Waterloo region tied to how much they pay for housing: Report

In February, a representative with Khalsa Aid Canada told CBC News it had seen an uptick in calls from international students needing food, clothing and a place to live.

The charity helps students struggling to access food, clothes and shelter in cities nationwide. Its director, Jindi Singh, said governments and post-secondary institutions should be doing more to support international students in need.

"We truly feel it's not really our role," Singh said, adding that post-secondary institutions are "making billions out of this situation," but "there's absolutely no wrap-around services for these students, who are left to fend for themselves."

'Financial burden'

Karaagac said researchers heard from a family of four from the Bahamas who were looking for a rental before they arrived in Canada, but their applications were all being rejected. She said they eventually found an Airbnb and had still been staying there at the time of the interview — for eight months — living out of boxes and suitcases because no one accepts them as tenants.

Seated people hold tiny Canadian flags.

She said another family from Bangladesh shared how they thought they had rented an apartment through an agency before they arrived in Canada. However, when they arrived they found out that the apartment was already rented out.

"They have been living in the basement of another [family's house] for the rest of their education," Karaagac said.

"Another family from Colombia, they've been asked for so [much] documentation that they can't possibly provide because they're newcomers. So, they were asked to pay six months of rent upfront, which is not legal, but it has become the common industry practice and they had to pay. So, this financial burden, spending entire years saving and borrowing from family or banks has become prevalent."

'It is not all sunshine and roses'

Karaagac is recommending that at the university and city levels, international students should be provided with guidance and up-to-date information before they embark on their journey.

"We need to talk about not only the programs and university, but also housing markets, cost of living, waiting lists for university housing and day cares and family doctors so that they make informed decisions," she said.

"It is not all sunshine and roses, but we need to tell them, otherwise it is false advertisement."

  • International students are in 'crisis.' Governments need to take responsibility: Peel charities
  • We're welcoming record numbers of international students. Here's how they got caught up in the housing crisis

Karaagac also recommends guaranteeing subsidized, off market housing for every full-time tuition-paying international student.

"This is not a radical idea. The U.K. and U.S., other major international student-receiving countries, they guaranteed it. When they offer acceptance to a program, they also offer a place to live — housing, subsidized housing in their offer letter, so that when people come we don't fail them and they're not in a vulnerable situation in the housing market," she said.

The researcher said there is also a need for bylaws to protect newcomers from illegal practices, rental scams, improper fees and discrimination in the market.
