If you’re new to the world of research, or it’s your first time writing a dissertation or thesis, you’re probably noticing that the words “research hypothesis” and “scientific hypothesis” are used quite a bit, and you’re wondering what they mean in a research context .

“Hypothesis” is one of those words that people use loosely, thinking they understand what it means. However, it has a very specific meaning within academic research. So, it’s important to understand the exact meaning before you start hypothesizing.

What is a hypothesis?

Let’s start with the general definition of a hypothesis (not a research hypothesis or scientific hypothesis), according to the Cambridge Dictionary:

Hypothesis: an idea or explanation for something that is based on known facts but has not yet been proved.

In other words, it’s a statement that provides an explanation for why or how something works, based on facts (or some reasonable assumptions), but that has not yet been specifically tested . For example, a hypothesis might look something like this:

Hypothesis: sleep impacts academic performance.

This statement predicts that academic performance will be influenced by the amount and/or quality of sleep a student engages in – sounds reasonable, right? It’s based on reasonable assumptions , underpinned by what we currently know about sleep and health (from the existing literature). So, loosely speaking, we could call it a hypothesis, at least by the dictionary definition.

But that’s not good enough…

Unfortunately, that’s not quite sophisticated enough to describe a research hypothesis (also sometimes called a scientific hypothesis), and it wouldn’t be acceptable in a dissertation, thesis or research paper . In the world of academic research, a statement needs a few more criteria to constitute a true research hypothesis .

What is a research hypothesis?

A research hypothesis (also called a scientific hypothesis) is a statement about the expected outcome of a study (for example, a dissertation or thesis). To constitute a quality hypothesis, the statement needs to have three attributes – specificity , clarity and testability .

Let’s take a look at these more closely.

Hypothesis Essential #1: Specificity & Clarity

A good research hypothesis needs to be extremely clear and articulate about both what’ s being assessed (who or what variables are involved ) and the expected outcome (for example, a difference between groups, a relationship between variables, etc.).

Let’s stick with our sleepy students example and look at how this statement could be more specific and clear.

Hypothesis: Students who sleep at least 8 hours per night will, on average, achieve higher grades in standardised tests than students who sleep less than 8 hours a night.

As you can see, the statement is very specific as it identifies the variables involved (sleep hours and test grades), the parties involved (two groups of students), as well as the predicted relationship type (a positive relationship). There’s no ambiguity or uncertainty about who or what is involved in the statement, and the expected outcome is clear.

Contrast that to the original hypothesis we looked at – “Sleep impacts academic performance” – and you can see the difference. “Sleep” and “academic performance” are both comparatively vague , and there’s no indication of what the expected relationship direction is (more sleep or less sleep). As you can see, specificity and clarity are key.

A good research hypothesis needs to be very clear about what’s being assessed and very specific about the expected outcome.

Hypothesis Essential #2: Testability (Provability)

A statement must be testable to qualify as a research hypothesis. In other words, there needs to be a way to prove (or disprove) the statement. If it’s not testable, it’s not a hypothesis – simple as that.

For example, consider the hypothesis we mentioned earlier:

Hypothesis: Students who sleep at least 8 hours per night will, on average, achieve higher grades in standardised tests than students who sleep less than 8 hours a night.  

We could test this statement by undertaking a quantitative study involving two groups of students, one that gets 8 or more hours of sleep per night for a fixed period, and one that gets less. We could then compare the standardised test results for both groups to see if there’s a statistically significant difference. 

Again, if you compare this to the original hypothesis we looked at – “Sleep impacts academic performance” – you can see that it would be quite difficult to test that statement, primarily because it isn’t specific enough. How much sleep? By who? What type of academic performance?

So, remember the mantra – if you can’t test it, it’s not a hypothesis 🙂

A good research hypothesis must be testable. In other words, you must able to collect observable data in a scientifically rigorous fashion to test it.

Defining A Research Hypothesis

A research hypothesis (or scientific hypothesis) is a statement about an expected relationship between variables, or explanation of an occurrence, that is clear, specific and testable.

So, when you write up hypotheses for your dissertation or thesis, make sure that they meet all these criteria. If you do, you’ll not only have rock-solid hypotheses but you’ll also ensure a clear focus for your entire research project.

What about the null hypothesis?

You may have also heard the terms null hypothesis , alternative hypothesis, or H-zero thrown around. At a simple level, the null hypothesis is the counter-proposal to the original hypothesis.

For example, if the hypothesis predicts that there is a relationship between two variables (for example, sleep and academic performance), the null hypothesis would predict that there is no relationship between those variables.

At a more technical level, the null hypothesis proposes that no statistical significance exists in a set of given observations and that any differences are due to chance alone.

And there you have it – hypotheses in a nutshell.

What is a Research Hypothesis?

Research hypothesis is a statement that introduces a research question and proposes an expected result. It is an integral part of the scientific method that forms the basis of scientific experiments. Therefore, you need to be careful and thorough when building your research hypothesis. A minor flaw in the construction of your hypothesis could have an adverse effect on your experiment. In research, there is a convention that the hypothesis is written in two forms, the null hypothesis, and the alternative hypothesis (called the experimental hypothesis when the method of investigation is an experiment).

Characteristics of a Good Research Hypothesis

As the hypothesis is specific, there is a testable prediction about what you expect to happen in a study. You may consider drawing hypothesis from previously published research based on the theory.

A good research hypothesis involves more effort than just a guess. In particular, your hypothesis may begin with a question that could be further explored through background research.

To help you formulate a promising research hypothesis, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the language clear and focused?
  • What is the relationship between your hypothesis and your research topic?
  • Is your hypothesis testable? If yes, then how?
  • What are the possible explanations that you might want to explore?
  • Does your hypothesis include both an independent and dependent variable?
  • Can you manipulate your variables without hampering the ethical standards?
  • Does your research predict the relationship and outcome?
  • Is your research simple and concise (avoids wordiness)?
  • Is it clear with no ambiguity or assumptions about the readers’ knowledge
  • Is your research observable and testable results?
  • Is it relevant and specific to the research question or problem?

How to formulate a research hypothesis.

A testable hypothesis is not a simple statement. It is rather an intricate statement that needs to offer a clear introduction to a scientific experiment, its intentions, and the possible outcomes. However, there are some important things to consider when building a compelling hypothesis.

1. State the problem that you are trying to solve.

Make sure that the hypothesis clearly defines the topic and the focus of the experiment.

2. Try to write the hypothesis as an if-then statement.

Follow this template: If a specific action is taken, then a certain outcome is expected.

3. Define the variables

Independent variables are the ones that are manipulated, controlled, or changed. Independent variables are isolated from other factors of the study.

Dependent variables , as the name suggests are dependent on other factors of the study. They are influenced by the change in independent variable.

4. Scrutinize the hypothesis

Evaluate assumptions, predictions, and evidence rigorously to refine your understanding.

Types of Research Hypothesis

The types of research hypothesis are stated below:

1. Simple Hypothesis

It predicts the relationship between a single dependent variable and a single independent variable.

2. Complex Hypothesis

It predicts the relationship between two or more independent and dependent variables.

3. Directional Hypothesis

It specifies the expected direction to be followed to determine the relationship between variables and is derived from theory. Furthermore, it implies the researcher’s intellectual commitment to a particular outcome.

4. Non-directional Hypothesis

It does not predict the exact direction or nature of the relationship between the two variables. The non-directional hypothesis is used when there is no theory involved or when findings contradict previous research.

5. Associative and Causal Hypothesis

The associative hypothesis defines interdependency between variables. A change in one variable results in the change of the other variable. On the other hand, the causal hypothesis proposes an effect on the dependent due to manipulation of the independent variable.

6. Null Hypothesis

Null hypothesis states a negative statement to support the researcher’s findings that there is no relationship between two variables. There will be no changes in the dependent variable due the manipulation of the independent variable. Furthermore, it states results are due to chance and are not significant in terms of supporting the idea being investigated.

7. Alternative Hypothesis

It states that there is a relationship between the two variables of the study and that the results are significant to the research topic. An experimental hypothesis predicts what changes will take place in the dependent variable when the independent variable is manipulated. Also, it states that the results are not due to chance and that they are significant in terms of supporting the theory being investigated.

Research Hypothesis Examples of Independent and Dependent Variables

Research Hypothesis Example 1 The greater number of coal plants in a region (independent variable) increases water pollution (dependent variable). If you change the independent variable (building more coal factories), it will change the dependent variable (amount of water pollution).
Research Hypothesis Example 2 What is the effect of diet or regular soda (independent variable) on blood sugar levels (dependent variable)? If you change the independent variable (the type of soda you consume), it will change the dependent variable (blood sugar levels)

You should not ignore the importance of the above steps. The validity of your experiment and its results rely on a robust testable hypothesis. Developing a strong testable hypothesis has few advantages, it compels us to think intensely and specifically about the outcomes of a study. Consequently, it enables us to understand the implication of the question and the different variables involved in the study. Furthermore, it helps us to make precise predictions based on prior research. Hence, forming a hypothesis would be of great value to the research. Here are some good examples of testable hypotheses.

More importantly, you need to build a robust testable research hypothesis for your scientific experiments. A testable hypothesis is a hypothesis that can be proved or disproved as a result of experimentation.

Importance of a Testable Hypothesis

To devise and perform an experiment using scientific method, you need to make sure that your hypothesis is testable. To be considered testable, some essential criteria must be met:

  • There must be a possibility to prove that the hypothesis is true.
  • There must be a possibility to prove that the hypothesis is false.
  • The results of the hypothesis must be reproducible.

Without these criteria, the hypothesis and the results will be vague. As a result, the experiment will not prove or disprove anything significant.

What are Some of the Types of Hypotheses?

Understanding the concept of hypotheses completely is essential for creating a good hypothesis. It is, therefore, important to understand the different types of hypotheses before you begin writing.

Regarding types, there are mainly two, namely Alternative and Null hypotheses.

1. Alternative Hypothesis

Academically, it is often referred to as H1. Identifying the expected outcome of your research procedure is the purpose of this type of research. Furthermore, it can be further classified into two subcategories:

The first is directional: This statement specifies how to gather the expected results. In most cases, it is used to establish a relationship between variables rather than to compare multiple groups. 

Example : The performance of athletes on the field will be improved by attending physiotherapy sessions.

Another alternative hypothesis is non-directional: As the name implies, a non-directional alternative hypothesis does not suggest a direction for the expected outcomes.

Example : Attending physiotherapy sessions affects an athlete's performance on the field.

Observe carefully the two statements in the above examples. A directional statement states that physiotherapy sessions will enhance or boost performance. Non-directional statements establish a correlation between the two variables (physiotherapy sessions and performance). There is no indication, however, that physiotherapy sessions will result in better or worse performance.

2. Null Hypothesis

H0 is the null hypothesis. As opposed to an alternative hypothesis, there is a null hypothesis. This is a statement that defines the opposite of what you expect to see during your research. Essentially, a null hypothesis asserts no relationship exists between the variables specified in the hypothesis.

The last example can be stated as follows to provide an idea of how a null hypothesis is written:

Example: On-field performance is not affected by physiotherapy sessions.

Alternative and null hypotheses are written to clarify and examine the research problem in detail. A research problem statement is a question that is not valid or testable, while a hypothesis is a hypothesis that can be tested. The former, however, can be tested, validated, or denied.

3. Simple Hypothesis

Statements that reflect the relationship between dependent and independent variables are called dependent statements. You will understand the example if you follow it through,

  • Lung cancer is a common result of smoking
  • Obesity may result from sugar-rich diets

4. Complex Hypothesis

Depending on the research problem, complex hypotheses imply a relationship between several dependent variables. You can better understand this by following the examples below:

  • A person who eats more fruits tends to have a higher immunity, a lower cholesterol level, and a higher metabolic rate.
  • Work hours can be made more productive by taking short breaks during them.

5. Empirical Hypothesis

A "Working Hypothesis" is also known as an experiment that validates a theory. As a result, the statement appears plausible and not just a wild guess.

6. Statistical Hypothesis

The statistical hypothesis is a statement claiming an explanation based on a sample of the population. An example of logic-based analysis is researching a particular population and gathering evidence using a certain sample size.

  • 54% of Canadians are between the ages of 22 and 27
  • An Agro-based industry in Kenya employs 57% of the rural population.

Hypothesis VS Prediction: How Do They Differ?

Hypotheses can mean predictions, too, causing confusion. Both are guesses but different. Hypotheses are for science; predictions are more common outside of science. A hypothesis is like a smart guess. It uses what we've learned to understand things we're unsure about. It connects facts to make an educated scientific guess. Experiments test these guesses. Assumptions are what you think will happen in the study.

Predictions are different. They're often just guesses without proof. While they could be scientific in theory, they usually lack facts. Predictions guess what might happen, often by people who don't know much. Also, how we prove these is very different. Predictions have only one test: if they're right or wrong when the event happens. Hypotheses can be tested many times by different scientists using various methods.

The following examples will help you better understand the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction:

Example Hypothesis: Eating more fruits and vegetables will lead to faster weight loss and a cleaner body.

The hypothesis is based on general knowledge (i.e. fruits and vegetables have fewer calories than other foods) and past experiences (i.e. people who choose healthier foods like fruits and vegetables lose more weight). Though it is still a guess, it is based on facts and can be tested.

Example Prediction: 2023 will be the end of the world.

A prediction foretells what will happen in the future. However, given the lack of actual grounded evidence to support this claim, it is a fictional assumption.

It is not easy to select a hypothesis. Let us suppose you have chosen an intriguing topic with lots of research potential. 1. Conducting Research is the First Step

What Is the Hypothesis in a Dissertation?

Types of Research Hypotheses

Your dissertation hypothesis is the prediction statement based on the theory that you are researching in your study. Doctoral candidates test their hypotheses in their dissertations, their original research project that they write and defend in order to graduate. Here, you will learn about hypothesis types, writing and testing for your dissertation and hypothesis examples.

In your dissertation, you may create a hypothesis based on your research that predicts a relationship, called an "alternative" or "research" hypothesis. To balance your findings, you will also create a "null" hypothesis, which claims that the relationship that is to be proven in the research hypothesis does not exist. According to Alan Agresti and Barbara Finlay in “Statistical Methods for the Social Sciences,” the null is directly tested and predicts no effect, and the alternative contradicts the null and predicts an effect.

There can also be types of research hypotheses. As indicated in Research Methods Knowledge Base, a "one-tailed" hypothesis specifies a direction, either an increase or a decrease, while a "two-tailed" hypothesis does not specify a direction, only a change.

You must write your dissertation hypotheses before you collect and analyze your data. A useful hypothesis as testable and should include the independent variable, which you control, and the dependent variable, which is observed or measured based on the independent variable. For example, taking media consumption of violence as the independent variable and aggression as the dependent variable, the null hypothesis could state, “Media consumption of violence has no effect on aggression,” while the alternative hypothesis would state, “Media consumption of violence has an effect on aggression.” Similarly, if you wanted to create a one-tailed hypothesis, you would indicate a direction, such as, “Media consumption of violence increases aggression." Make sure that your statements are brief and straight-to-the-point and keep in mind the results you will measure in your study.

Research Methods Knowledge Base states that hypothesis testing assumes that both mutually exclusive hypotheses (research and null) exhaust every possible outcome and in the end, one is accepted and the other is rejected. When you analyze your data, you conclude whether you reject your null hypothesis and accept your alternative or fail to reject your null.

A dissertation can test a very broad range of hypotheses, depending on the discipline and focus of the writer. For example Antoinette Hill from Our Lady of the Lake University lent her research hypothesis to the title of her dissertation, "Are There Differences in Leadership Styles at Local, State, and National/Federal Levels among Advocates for People with Disabilities?" Her hypothesis used leadership as the independent variable and level of advocacy for people with disabilities as the dependent variable. Simply looking through the titles of dissertations published at a university of college each year can provide a long list of examples of a variety of hypotheses and ways to present them.

How to structure the Research Limitations section of your dissertation

There is no "one best way" to structure the Research Limitations section of your dissertation. However, we recommend a structure based on three moves : the announcing , reflecting and forward looking move. The announcing move immediately allows you to identify the limitations of your dissertation and explain how important each of these limitations is. The reflecting move provides greater depth, helping to explain the nature of the limitations and justify the choices that you made during the research process. Finally, the forward looking move enables you to suggest how such limitations could be overcome in future. The collective aim of these three moves is to help you walk the reader through your Research Limitations section in a succinct and structured way. This will make it clear to the reader that you recognise the limitations of your own research, that you understand why such factors are limitations, and can point to ways of combating these limitations if future research was carried out. This article explains what should be included in each of these three moves :

  • THE ANNOUNCING MOVE: Identifying limitations and explaining how important they are
  • THE REFLECTING MOVE: Explaining the nature of the limitations and justifying the choices you made
  • THE FORWARD LOOKING MOVE: Suggesting how such limitations could be overcome in future

THE ANNOUNCING MOVE Identifying limitations, and explaining how important they are

There are many possible limitations that your research may have faced. However, is not necessary for you to discuss all of these limitations in your Research Limitations section. After all, you are not writing a 2000 word critical review of the limitations of your dissertation, just a 200-500 word critique that is only one section long (i.e., the Research Limitations section within your Conclusions chapter). Therefore, in this first announcing move , we would recommend that you identify only those limitations that had the greatest potential impact on: (a) the quality of your findings; and (b) your ability to effectively answer your research questions and/or hypotheses.

We use the word potential impact because we often do not know the degree to which different factors limited our findings or our ability to effectively answer our research questions and/or hypotheses. For example, we know that when adopting a quantitative research design, a failure to use a probability sampling technique significantly limits our ability to make broader generalisations from our results (i.e., our ability to make statistical inferences from our sample to the population being studied). However, the degree to which this reduces the quality of our findings is a matter of debate. Also, whilst the lack of a probability sampling technique when using a quantitative research design is a very obvious example of a research limitation, other limitations are far less clear. Therefore, the key point is to focus on those limitations that you feel had the greatest impact on your findings, as well as your ability to effectively answer your research questions and/or hypotheses.

Overall, the announcing move should be around 10-20% of the total word count of the Research Limitations section.

THE REFLECTING MOVE Explaining the nature of the limitations and justifying the choices you made

Having identified the most important limitations to your dissertation in the announcing move , the reflecting move focuses on explaining the nature of these limitations and justifying the choices that you made during the research process. This part should be around 60-70% of the total word count of the Research Limitations section.

It is important to remember at this stage that all research suffers from limitations, whether it is performed by undergraduate and master's level dissertation students, or seasoned academics. Acknowledging such limitations should not be viewed as a weakness, highlighting to the person marking your work the reasons why you should receive a lower grade. Instead, the reader is more likely to accept that you recognise the limitations of your own research if you write a high quality reflecting move . This is because explaining the limitations of your research and justifying the choices you made during the dissertation process demonstrates the command that you had over your research.

We talk about explaining the nature of the limitations in your dissertation because such limitations are highly research specific. Let's take the example of potential limitations to your sampling strategy. Whilst you may have a number of potential limitations in sampling strategy, let's focus on the lack of probability sampling ; that is, of all the different types of sampling technique that you could have used [see Types of probability sampling and Types of non-probability sampling ], you choose not to use a probability sampling technique (e.g., simple random sampling , systematic random sampling , stratified random sampling ). As mentioned, if you used a quantitative research design in your dissertation, the lack of probability sampling is an important, obvious limitation to your research. This is because it prevents you from making generalisations about the population you are studying (e.g. Facebook usage at a single university of 20,000 students) from the data you have collected (e.g., a survey of 400 students at the same university). Since an important component of quantitative research is such generalisation, this is a clear limitation. However, the lack of a probability sampling technique is not viewed as a limitation if you used a qualitative research design. In qualitative research designs, a non-probability sampling technique is typically selected over a probability sampling technique.

And this is just part of the puzzle?

Even if you used a quantitative research design, but failed to employ a probability sampling technique, there are still many perfectly justifiable reasons why you could have made such a choice. For example, it may have been impossible (or near on impossible) to get a list of the population you were studying (e.g., a list of all the 20,000 students at the single university you were interested in). Since probability sampling is only possible when we have such a list, the lack of such a list or inability to attain such a list is a perfectly justifiable reason for not using a probability sampling technique; even if such a technique is the ideal.

As such, the purpose of all the guides we have written on research limitations is to help you: (a) explain the nature of the limitations in your dissertation; and (b) justify the choices you made.

In helping you to justifying the choices that you made, these articles explain not only when something is, in theory , an obvious limitation, but how, in practice , such a limitation was not necessarily so damaging to the quality of your dissertation. This should significantly strengthen the quality of your Research Limitations section.

THE FORWARD LOOKING MOVE Suggesting how such limitations could be overcome in future

Finally, the forward looking move builds on the reflecting move by suggesting how the limitations you have discuss could be overcome through future research. Whilst a lot could be written in this part of the Research Limitations section, we would recommend that it is only around 10-20% of the total word count for this section.

Refuting a hypothesis in a dissertation

I am writing my dissertation, and things came out somewhat different to what I had thought three years ago. Back then, I had three hypotheses. Two turned out to be true. The third, last and flimsiest, looks false. The question is: how should I describe the third hypothesis in the short list of hypotheses?

I could phrase it the way I did three years ago. In the results and conclusions section, I could try refuting it.

I could phrase it the other way around, as if I always thought it was untrue. There a billion problems to that, the least being: how does one then describe the experimental plan? I can't really say I wanted the null hypothesis to come true? Surely different kinds of experiments would have been more useful.

I could leave that section out. That is madness, it's a lot of work down the drain.

  • As a slight tangent, it can sometimes help fill out the greater context and place of a work if you at some point (usually in an introduction) detail how the entire project got started. Frequently the best way of writing out a paper is wildly different from how it proceeded in reality--I recently had a paper which started with a clear and specific idea for the starting point, and this ended up being the last thing talked about, as a simple application, in the actual paper--, and this can make it unclear how the problem was originally approached or even found. It is hard to give good advice on this without knowing the concrete dissertation and the expectations of your community. Hence, this is one of those famous questions where the right answer really is ask your advisor .

However, in the dark I am not sure why you would not just use Option 1 from your list - you had a (hopefully reasonable) hypothesis, you set up experiments and tested it, and found no evidence to support your hypothesis. Assuming that the hypothesis wasn't bad to begin with and the experiments were sound, why can't you just write it down like this?

I agree with @xLeitix's advice (+1): use the first option, that is, leave your hypotheses untouched . There is nothing wrong with not confirming certain hypotheses - negative results are also valuable (for example, see this paper , this journal and this workshop ). I would suggest to complement textual reporting with a summary table , with a minimum of three columns: hypothesis, result of hypothesis testing, statistical significance of the test. In addition, I would recommend (and this is expected in a dissertation report) to include your interpretation of all results (including the negative ones) in the Discussion section of the Results chapter.

Many organisms must navigate attractive odor signals to find food or mates. However, this is not a simple task; odor signals can be spatiotemporally complex and depend on the flow conditions and terrain. In this talk, I present computational studies that suggest normative strategies for this task, alongside an analysis of olfactory navigation decisions in walking Drosophila. Our simulations show that detecting two complementary temporal features of odor signals supports robust navigation across diverse environments. Furthermore, we find that models of the Drosophila olfactory circuit are sensitive to two features in a manner useful for navigation. Additionally, analysis of real behavioral data indicates that flies do use these features in navigation, as predicted. Finally, I present ongoing research employing deep reinforcement learning to optimize the integration of various directional cues into a goal heading for navigating complex odor plumes. Doctor of Nursing Practice project focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration to increase ICU patient early mobility

When considering a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) as the next step in their education, many nurses share concerns regarding the program’s final project. Unlike a traditional doctoral dissertation, the goal of a DNP project is to allow students to showcase their ability to translate knowledge and research into practical applications and solutions to real-world problems, impacting health care outcomes at a systems or population level.

At UC College of Nursing, students work with faculty advisors to choose a DNP project topic that relates to their advanced-practice specialty. The nature of projects varies and can include:

  • A quality improvement initiative
  • Implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice guidelines
  • Policy analysis
  • Design and evaluation of new models of care or health care programs

To provide additional insight into the planning and steps of a DNP final project, we interviewed Paige Dahlke, BSN, RN, CCRN, an adult-gerontology acute care DNP candidate whose project ranked top at the college’s Annual Doctoral Student Project Showcase .

Dahlke received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Northern Colorado in 2016, before relocating with her husband to Dayton, Ohio where she worked closely with ICU nurse practitioners at Kettering Health Dayton.

“Watching my leadership exercise higher level thinking when making impactful decisions for patients inspired me to go back to school,” she says. “I enjoyed caring for critically ill patients and wanted to progress in my ability to care for them, so I decided the DNP in adult-gerontology acute care program was the path for me, since it allows me to not only care for patients at a higher level, but also implement quality improvement projects, teach and so much more.”

Given her previous work experience, Dahlke decided to pursue a quality improvement project focused on early mobility interventions for ICU staff.

“ICU patient care requires life-saving treatments that frequently relate to increased immobility. My literature review showed that prolonged immobility is detrimental to all systems and functional ability; even when patients recover from what landed them in the ICU, they’re still not doing great due to adverse effects such as ICU-acquired weakness,” Dahlke shares. “Getting patients up and moving leads to better patient outcomes, decreased length of stay, increased functional ability and better recovery after illness.”

Aware that the lack of collaboration among different disciplines providing patient care in the ICU is a consistent barrier to early mobility intervention completion, Dahlke decided to create and deliver an education module showcasing the safety and feasibility of early mobility interventions and shared a Level of Function Mobility (LOF) scale to assist in consistent care and seamless communication for care providers in the ICU.

Dahlke partnered with Kelsey Schweikert, BSN, RN, clinical nurse manager at Kettering Health, to present the education module and explain the LOF scale at the hospital’s ICU multidisciplinary meeting. She also showed where the LOF mobility scale and documentation for rating would be found in ICU patient rooms. To assess staff perceptions of the intervention and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dahlke collected surveys pre- and post-LOF scale use, in addition to data on length of stay and Morse Fall Risk Assessment before and after intervention and scale implementation. A statistical analysis showed an improvement in ICU length of stay, change in Morse Fall Risk and staff perceptions of early mobility. As the changes were not statistically significant, Dahlke concluded that, although the improvement in each of the metrics shows potential for the project, further evaluation—including longer implementation and additional resources—is necessary to potentially produce statistically significant results.

“My goal is to decrease the burden of one single discipline to complete early mobility interventions within the complex ICU,” says Dahlke. “A multidisciplinary approach will encourage collaboration and improve patient outcomes.”

When asked about her steps towards a successful DNP project, Dahlke praises the support she has received at the UC College of Nursing.

“Dr. Eilleen Werdman, my project chair, has been supportive of the project since day 1. DNP projects entail three well-defined phases—planning, implementation and data collection—each covered throughout the classes that walk you through the process for a successful project. You follow a well-defined process guided by faculty and your chair.”

Dahlke, who will welcome her first baby in July, graduate in August and move alongside her husband in September, is excited about her future professional options.

“I feel that the DNP has prepared me to do anything I want in my career. I may pursue cardiology or pulmonology, or another specialty. Even if I end up not going back to work in the ICU, I’m glad to have contributed to patient outcomes through my project,” she says.

National rankings highlight UC’s co-op program, innovation

The University of Cincinnati’s co-op program stands at No. 4 in the U.S. News & World Report’s latest rankings, continuing its historical placement among the top five co-op programs in the country — and No. 1 for co-op among public universities. The latest 2023 issue of the magazine’s influential “Best Colleges” guide ranks UC in the top tier, including among the “most innovative among national universities,” (No. 68) — UC’s first-ever ranking in that category.
