Every time we are dishonest, we are compelled to invent a different reality, which eventually forces us to live in two worlds—the actual one and the manufactured one. When we choose honesty in all facets of life, such as family, relationships, education, and marriage, life becomes easier and less stressful.
Long-Term Consequences | We often lie in order to achieve short-term goals, but we should remember that doing so might have long-term repercussions.
Honesty is a Powerful Tool | Being honest is the only way to express your true views. Use your Honesty to uplift people rather than to minimise them. It is a strong tool since it has great influencing ability.
Moral Compass | It will be difficult for you to live a life of integrity at first, but you'll quickly see that honesty is a far simpler road that leads to happiness in all facets of life.
To be Honest or Not to Be Honest | It's crucial for everyone to realise that sometimes telling the truth might lead to unneeded arguments or damage someone else's feelings.
Honest Inside - Honest Outside | If you decide to be honest with people in life, it is crucial to start by being honest with yourself. If we have sins and scars, we must acknowledge, take responsibility for, and heal them.
Honesty and Relationships | It's crucial to be honest in relationships to prevent miscommunications and hurt feelings in the future. In a relationship, lying will only make you happy in the moment but will have repercussions later.
Why Honesty Is The Best Policy
Let's examine some advantages of being truthful:
Honesty Demonstrates Your Self-Acceptance | Honesty might be accompanied by aches and wounds, but in the end, it is your expression. It undoubtedly represents your sentiments and ideas. It demonstrates your sense of value and self-acceptance.
Benefits of Honesty | We always hold people to the same standard of honesty that we hold ourselves to. If you are honest, you will probably get honesty as a reward.
Honesty Takes Your Burden Away | Your mental serenity will be taken away if you continue to carry about the weight of lying and deception and concealing your actual emotions. Being honest at all times will stop the development of emotional waste.
Honesty Promotes Close Relationships | Everyone loves and respects honest individuals. Any relationship must start with trust, which can only be gained through honesty.
Being honest with people demonstrates your level of trust, respect, and care for your relationships. It conveys your regard for both yourself and other people.
As a result, we are all aware of the benefits of being genuine and honest. Therefore, it is essential to cultivate the practice of being honest with ourselves and others so that we may live in a society with pride.

Essay on Honesty is the Best Policy
Every human being must learn to be honest. Honesty means truth. If a person wants to be honest, he must learn to speak the truth in life. Moreover, by being honest, a person will develop a strong moral character, learn good behavior, maintain discipline, follow the rules and regulations intelligently, and will always be punctual.
Every child must have learned the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy.’ Children learn honesty from their parents, elders, and teachers. Still, people prefer to tell lies for their benefit Since the incidence of deceitful behavior is on a high, the revival of the teachings of honesty is necessary.
Benefits of Honesty
There are several benefits of honesty. Honesty helps in the development of morally strong characters. If you are honest, you will not be afraid of anything. You do not have to think about making false stories and then the fear of repeating the same in exact words. If you are honest, you do not have to remember any false stories. People will trust you more. An honest person will also develop discipline. An honest person will be extremely content, know what to do from time to time, and will not take any pressure or tension about anything. The health will improve, and the mind will be at peace. The person will be very punctual and will complete all tasks on time. Since more people will trust an honest person, he or she will find more friends and will be supported all around. An honest person will not be involved in cheating, lying, lack of trust, greed, stealing, and any other immoral acts.
Honesty promotes authenticity. It is a reflection of the thoughts and feelings of a person. It is a form of self-expression, and if a person is honest, people will know what he or she truly is. It also makes the person confident. To speak the truth, it needs a lot of courage and confidence. Only a coward will tell lies because he or she is afraid of the truth. Speaking the truth is an act of bravery. Telling lies also shows that the person is low on self-confidence.
Honesty brings maturity. An honest person speaks the truth in a mature, non-hurtful manner. Therefore, the person does not hurt others, and therefore, his or her relationship with others remains good. Such a good relationship develops a connection between people. Such good relationships also give you peace of mind. Therefore honesty brings high-quality and trustworthy friendships to a person.
Honesty makes a person feel free. They do not have to keep any secrets. They know what is right, and will speak it naturally. They do not have to take the tension of making a false story and say it, in the same manner, every time. Honesty keeps troubles away from a person.
How to Prevent Oneself from Lying?
People generally lie to avoid getting into trouble and to prevent hurting others. Honest people always have faith in the people whom they are talking to. It is wrong to assume that the listener will reject the truth. To be honest, people must have the courage to say the truth. No one likes to be lied to, and therefore, it is wrong to lie to others. People also have to be diplomatic in their presentation of the truth. They must not be blunt or rude, as it might hurt others. In this way, the true message reaches the listeners, and they take it in without getting emotionally hurt.
Is it okay to be Dishonest at Times
You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.
But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.
You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.
LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS
If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:
There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.
According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.
Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.
If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:
Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.
You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.
If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.
If the Person is Not Close to you:
Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"
Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."
Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

Honesty is the best policy because it leads to a life of integrity and character. When you are honest, you can be more trusted, and people will have more respect for you. Being honest also creates fewer problems in your life and relationships.
What is Honesty?
Honesty is the quality of being honest, truthful and sincere. It is a virtue that is essential for good relationships. Honesty is the cornerstone of trust, without which relationships would crumble.
Being honest means being truthful about what you say and do, and not trying to deceive or mislead others. It also means being open and authentic in your communication, and not hiding your true feelings or intentions. When you are honest with others, they can trust you and feel confident in your relationship.
Honesty is important in all aspects of life – at home, at work, in your personal relationships, and in the wider community. By being honest, you build trust and respect from those around you. You also set an example for others to follow.
Being honest may not always be easy, but it is always the right thing to do.
Benefits of Being Honest
There are many benefits to being honest. For one, honesty builds trust. People are more likely to trust someone who is honest with them. This can lead to better relationships and more opportunities in life.
Honesty also makes you a better person. When you’re honest, you take responsibility for your actions and words. You own up to your mistakes and learn from them. This makes you a stronger and more principled person.
Being honest also shows that you have integrity. Integrity is a quality that is highly respected by others. It’s a sign of strength of character and an indication that you can be trusted.
Finally, honesty is the best policy because it’s the right thing to do. It’s simply the truth and it’s what we should all strive for in our lives.
The Negative Effects of Lying
Lying has many negative effects that can be felt both short-term and long-term. In the short-term, lying can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety. These feelings can be compounded if the lie is discovered, leading to further embarrassment and a loss of trust. In the long-term, habitual lying can damage relationships, both personal and professional. It can also lead to depression and anxiety, as well as a general sense of mistrust and dissatisfaction with life.
Repercussions of Dishonesty
Dishonesty has far-reaching consequences that can destroy personal relationships, damage your reputation, and jeopardize your career. When you are dishonest, people will no longer trust you and they will avoid you. Your reputation will suffer and you will have a hard time regaining people’s trust. In the workplace, dishonesty can cost you your job and damage your professional credibility.
Examples of Honesty in Society
There are many examples of honesty in society. One example is when a person tells the truth on their taxes. This is an act of honesty because they are not trying to hide anything or cheat the government. Another example is when someone volunteers their time to help others. This is an honest act because they are not doing it for any personal gain, but instead they are helping others out of the goodness of their hearts. Finally, another example of honesty in society is when someone returns lost property to its rightful owner. This is an honest act because the person could have kept the property for themselves, but instead they did the right thing and returned it to its rightful owner.
Honesty is the key to success and leads to a better, more satisfying life. It might be difficult to live by this principle all of the time, but it’s important for us to strive for integrity in our actions and words. Honesty should always be our priority when making decisions or engaging with others. If we are honest, not only will those around us benefit from our truthfulness, but so will ourselves as we gain trustworthiness and respect from those who value such qualities. Ultimately, honesty is the best policy because it can lead to positive outcomes within yourself and your relationships with others.

It is noticed that often simple topics that we have been hearing and writing about for many years are the ones that become the most difficult to write. One such topic is 'Honesty is the Best Policy' IELTS essay. Here is how you can write an engaging and advanced essay on it.

Honesty is the best policy essay: sample 1, essay on honesty is the best policy: sample 2, more essays samples to explore:.
The origin of this proverb honesty is the best policy can be attributed to Sir Edwin Sandys. He was an official of Virginia Company who had used the phrase in one of his writings in the 1500s. It is an irrefutable fact that modernization and evolution are all by-products of universal progression. Moreover, honesty, which was very common in ancient times, is now as rare as hens’ teeth. In consonance with this, it can be easily apprehended that the breakthrough has not only encouraged external evolutions but has also blazingly impacted the consciences of beings.
The rareness of honesty cannot modify its ultimate consequence- actualizing an ethical character. Nature functions on the mechanism of giving and taking. Every development does have a cost, as the progression of technology leads to more cyber crimes. Universal progression has not only evolved individuals in terms of lifestyles but has also affected their mindsets and the basic values being rendered to them. The traits which were seen as unlikely earlier, like greed, dishonesty, etc., are now predominant.
Selfishness is the trait that has turned ways around even for honest personalities. It has become complex to understand the fact that honesty is ideally engraved, even if you are selfish. It is time to perceive how being honest will make your life full of grace, gratitude, and gratefulness. Keep the 3G's handy by being honest.
Salient benefits of preaching honesty:
- Builds an established and didactic character,
- Augments the persona of a “credible” person,
- Attracts quality acquaintances rather than quantity,
- Backs in being more prudent and disciplined,
- Guides to be accountable for own, etc.
The ways for showcasing honesty can be tweaked, but in the long run, honesty must be practiced as a sole medium of paving the way through.

The essay topic is a resurgence of the old proverb reminding me what honesty means and what ceaseless good it brings. To me, honesty lies in everything that does not pinch my conscience. I feel it is cosmic and empowers individuals to build a bright future.
From the teachings of the past to the subsequent action, honesty was prevalent. It is for this reason that, as a child, I never experienced or witnessed the consequence of delinquency. Being true was colossal, and another way round was nefarious. Moral science was a perpetual life skill and, surprisingly, never seemed boring. I felt pride in speaking the truth, even when I got no rewards.
As opposed to that, kind, fragile, loving, gentle, honest, and likes of these emotions are weak words in the epoch that relies on quantification. Today, fastidiousness and other capricious ways, such as an over-exposure to the internet and the quantity of 'followers', have become the marshal fact to kindle happiness. Just like 'life' today is replaced with 'trend', the word 'Honesty' is often interchangeably used with expedience, making 'honesty is the best policy' no more than an obsolete idiom.
Honesty can be of many types and is used subjectively. Any modification that is untrue can be categorized as dishonesty. For example, using filters for online dating is also a form of cheating as you are not showing your real self; although, people don't find using the tiara or flowers as filters dishonest. Hence the word 'expedience' is more apt than using 'Honesty'. At the same time, a dog showering love on its caretaker is an honest embodiment.
Honesty reflects prudence, the integrity of character, and morality. And if what you are doing shows any of these, you have thought back for good!

Honesty is the best policy – Essay 1
Honesty, a habit that must be inherent by every individual born on the planet. Honesty implies being truthful. To make it simpler, we often judge the individual to be honest if he practices speaking truth. If you are honest enough, you bear a sense of confidence and a positive aspect of your life.
A person who possesses honesty in his/her life possesses an ethical way of living life. An honest person shows good behaviour, he always follows rules and regulations, maintains discipline, is always punctual, and speaks the truth.
In short, an honest person is trustworthy as he always follows the right path and believes in speaking truth.
To make Honesty applicable in our life. We often say, “honesty is the best policy”. It is a wise phrase. Probably, every child learns this teaching from their parents. To an extent, making life full of ethical nature is the parent’s role. This beautiful teaching has been though since the time being immortal. However, its practice has certainly fallen short. Nowadays, People lies very frequently. Furthermore, there is a lot of things that are completely involved in corruption these days.
People deceive each other by being dishonest. Therefore, there is an urgent need to face the mirror of life.
Benefits of Honesty is the best policy
A famous quote as given by great personality is, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom”. It holds to be a positive and good feature due to its ability to build, motivate, and shape integral values in our life.
To develop moral components within us, we need to look for some important aspects of life, and Honesty is one among those. Honesty helps to develop positive attributes like truthfulness, discipline, moral integrity, kindness, and much more.
If we talk about the elimination part, we should be focused to overcome the lack of trust, steal, lying, cheating, greed, and some other important attributes. These aspects have no place when we talk about Honesty or being Honest.
- Honest people are sincere, loyal, and trustworthy throughout their life. Honesty is valuable and is a habit of utmost importance.
- Honesty promotes Authenticity. If you are honest, you will reflect on one’s feelings and thoughts. Certainly, honesty helps in knowing who you are. Therefore, one must be honest in self – expression.
- To speak trust, a person requires a lot of courage. However, to fake out a lie, all you need is a jumble of words. This shows the difference and the courage one has to reveal to lead a part of Honesty.
- Honesty removes fear from the Heart. It makes people confident and courageous. Speaking truth is a part of bravery. The one who lies is a coward. Also, speaking falsehood is a sign of low self – confidence.
- Another feature to highlight is Maturity. Honesty certainly reflects the maturity of a person. An individual’s personality reflects positive signs if he practices honesty. Also, if you are mature enough, you will speak the trust without even hurting the feelings of others.
- The discussion could not end if we forget about our self – peace i.e. the peace of mind. Being honest makes you feel free. An honest person reflects light-headed feelings. The reason is that he is not stuck in the stress and tensions of lying. Moreover, he does not have to deal with keeping secrets. All this feels makes him more relaxing.
- Additionally, an individual’s reputation is also attached to the power of being Honest. He enhances his reputation and status in society if he practices honesty. Everyone seems to be fond of such an honest person. Also, it is very easy for an honest person to generate trust with other people.
- Honesty keeps all the troubles away. A lie can provide some sort of temporary relief for an individual but in the long run, this is going to be his own fatal. Lies pull a person into more and more trouble. It even makes a person more habitual of being a liar. He/she continuously engages in speaking lies. One lie can lead to a hundred more lies.
Therefore, one must be truthful from the beginning. All this means is that one must stay honest in every situation that crosses the way.
Being honest will certainly result in high – quality friends. Also, with the high – quality you might even get to enjoy a long-lasting friendship with those who deserve. This friendship will be very close and strong which involves such individuals.
How to Avoid lying?
To stop lying is a tough path if you are a chronic liar. But it is not an impossible task. Although this will result in long-lasting fruitful results. One must not assume that others will not accept the truth.
Gather up your courage. This will help you to speak what you wish to and, in the end, you will end up saying all that is true. Though it requires courage but is certainly good. It is not the job of a faint-hearted person.
Try to think the other way. Do you wish to be lied? No, if you don’t consider this for yourself, how can you apply it for others. Assuming this way will structure you as being a remote thinker.
Before speaking the truth, always try to structure your words. Furthermore, always ensure not to speak rude or blunt.
The fact that honesty is a tough path in today’s world is completely acceptable. But keeping in mind the positive sides of Honesty, we must mould ourselves.
Honesty is the best policy, is of significant importance. In this dark word, Honesty is the light of hope.
To make honesty a practice, try to find situations where you can prove yourself of being honest. In some attempts, you might think of dropping the plan but sooner or later, you will enjoy the circumstances. Honesty is the power that prevails in the mind and soul of a person.
Therefore, honesty must prevail while the falsehood must be perished.
Honesty is the best policy – Essay 2
Honesty is a deserving praise for anyone in any walk of life. Dishonesty may bring instant success, but in the long run it will only bring disaster.
Indeed, honesty is the best policy. An honest person is admired and respected by others. Other people know that they can trust him or her and that he or she is a dependable and reliable person.
They know that even if they do something wrong, he or she will own up to it. He or she will never try to make excuses, blame others or tell lies.
When a person tells lies often, very soon, people realize that he or she is a terrible liar. They avoid him or her, and know that he or she is not to be trusted. They do not believe anything that he or she says, for it could be a lie.
People have no respect for such a person. Gandhiji always spoke the truth, even if he knew that he would be punished for what he said.
The guiding principles of his entire life were truth and ahimsa, and he taught this to everyone. Today he is revered and admired all over the world.
So it is up to us to decide which path we wish to take: the path of righteousness and honesty or the path of slyness and dishonesty.
Speaking truth is often difficult in many circumstances, but truth remains long lasting, a person is identified by his/her deeds.
What make a person remembered? His deeds, that how he/she was. It is human tendency to speak lies, but you often avoid speaking lies.
If a person catch you speaking lie, then he will never believe on you, truth as its own power, even sometimes you spoke lie, then also they will believe on you, because they knew that you speaks truth only.
Speaking Truth has a different impact. It is better that you should follow, the famous proverb saying words, that “Honesty is the best policy” and it cannot be avoided.
Story on Honesty is the Best policy
We all have read a story about the woodcutter and mercury in school life. The story was that, one day a woodcutter’s axe accidentally fell into a river. The river at the spot was deep and its current was swift.
The woodcutter tried hard but he could not find his axe. He was very sad. Mercury, the messenger of god, saw the sad woodcutter and took pity on him.
Don’t worry. I will bring you your axe, said Mercury to the wood cutter and dived into the river. Mercury came out of the river with an axe of gold and offered it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter said, “That is not mine. I can’t take it.”
Once again Mercury went down into the river and this time returned with an axe made of pure silver. The honest woodcutter said, “That is not my axe either.”
So Mercury dived into the river a third time. This time he brought with him a crude axe made of iron.
“That’s it,” cried the woodcutter joyfully and rushed to Mercury to take it.
Mercury was pleased with the poor man’s honesty. He gave him both the gold axe and the silver axe as a reward for his honesty.

Why Honesty Isn't Always the Best Policy
The honest truth about honesty..
Posted October 6, 2013 | Reviewed by Kaja Perina
Whether you’re getting it off your chest, venting, expressing yourself, airing your feelings or “just being honest," the truth about honesty is that honesty is not always the best policy.
What’s more, continuing on the path of full disclosure can actually bring permanent closure to your relationships!
The reality is we don’t need knives or guns to mortally wound those closest to us. Words cut like knives and it’s easy to bury your relationship with the verbal cuts of a “truthful” tongue.
The truth is honesty is often a veiled form of self-indulgence.
What do I mean by self-indulgence?
In a nutshell, when feelings build up, it’s frustrating to “sit” on them. And, of course, it feels damn good to release them. That feel good sensation is a form of gratification. It’s like taking an emotional poop, which provides an instant release of pressure. But when we dump emotional turds on others, we are flushing our relationships down the toilet.
It’s a sad fact that our education at home and in school doesn’t include teaching us how to manage our angry feelings. Since intimate relationships trigger negative feelings, this means most of us are mistreating the people we love most by lashing out and even verbally killing those we supposedly love in various overt and symbolic ways.
In my book Kiss Your Fights Goodbye: Dr. Love’s 10 Simple Steps to Cooling Conflict and Rekindling Your Connection , I discuss so-called Fight Traps, which are the dysfunctional ways that humans act out anger. There’s a continuum of dumping that ranges from outright physical violence on the one end of the spectrum to far subtler forms of aggression —honesty being the subtlest of all forms of assault.
While we may feel temporarily relieved when we shoot off rounds of honesty, we pay a terrible price for this temporary satisfaction, as we harm our relationships and our own self-esteem (you can’t feel proud of yourself when you misbehave).
The good news is that you can make the decision to change the way you handle your angry feelings; to consider what you say before you speak, to ask yourself how the other person will feel before you say or do x, y or z. To consider whether what you intend to say or do will be helpful and constructive to the other person and your relationship.
It's also important to remember that anger is never the primary emotion . When we become angry, it’s because we usually feel other more basic and vulnerable feelings such as hurt, sadness and fear .
Making the decision to get beneath the veneer of anger and speak from the most vulnerable part of your emotional core is the ticket. When you honestly speak from this place, you arouse a feeling of empathy rather than antipathy. This one simple shift is your secret to turning conflict into connection by fostering a truly intimate and loving relationship that is based on the right kind of honesty.

16 of the Best Celebrity Memoirs to Read in 2023
By emily malkowski | may 15, 2024, 9:55 pm edt.
It’s no secret that as a society, we’re obsessed with the idea of celebrity , which is perhaps why this memoir genre has become so widely popular over time. When we read highly intimate stories written by our favorite actors, musicians, and public figures, the curtain is temporarily pulled back, giving us an up-close and personal look at the people behind the fame. It’s like reading a private diary or, even better, catching up with an old friend.
And while it’s true that we may never actually be able to sit down and chat with our favorite stars, reading essays where they recount their inspiring journeys (and all of the juicy drama along the way) is arguably the next best thing. If you’re looking for the best celebrity memoirs to read this year, you can start by checking out these 16 standout titles below.
1. Spare // Prince Harry
The most recent release on this list is Spare , an emotional tell-all by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex . Divided into three sections, the book lets readers in on the intimate details of his life, including his mother Princess Diana ’s death, his service in the military, falling in love with Meghan Markle , and making the difficult decision to leave the royal family .
Wondering where the title Spare comes into play? It comes from the colloquial idea that royal families should have at least two children: “An heir and a spare.” The spare , or the second-born child, would serve as a guarantee that, should anything happen to the first child, there would always be a continuation of the royal family lineage . This added context sets the tone for a memoir that doesn’t pull any punches as Prince Harry fearlessly critiques both the British royal family and the impact of living an incredibly public life under the media’s gaze.
2. I’m Glad My Mom Died // Jennette McCurdy
Penned by former Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy, I’m Glad My Mom Died took the world by storm in 2022 and, as of this writing, has spent 23 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. The book chronicles McCurdy’s early beginnings as a child actor and recounts her tumultuous struggles with eating disorders, addiction, and an abusive relationship with her mother, who died of breast cancer in 2013. I’m Glad My Mom Died was originally a darkly comedic one-woman show that McCurdy performed for audiences in Los Angeles and New York City before adapting the material into a memoir.
3. Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood // Trevor Noah
The title of Trevor Noah’s bestselling memoir is unfortunately not a play on words: It was literally a crime to be born a mixed-race baby in South Africa during the apartheid era, when interracial relationships were banned and racial classification was the foundation of all societal laws. Published in 2016, Born a Crime chronicles the hardships Noah faced while growing up in the twilight of apartheid and poignantly reflects on the years leading up to his rise to fame as an award-winning writer, comedian, producer, actor, and former longtime host of The Daily Show . In 2018, Noah won the Audie Award for Best Male Narrator for his narration of the Audible-exclusive audiobook version of the book.
4. We Were Dreamers // Simu Liu
Mirroring the storyline of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, this bestselling memoir is its own immigrant superhero origin story of sorts. In the first half of We Were Dreamers , Marvel star Simu Liu traces his parents’ unique and hard-fought experience immigrating to Canada against all odds.
It isn’t until the second half of the book that Liu begins to unravel his own journey toward stardom, from becoming a breakout TV star on Kim’s Convenience to eventually landing the role of a lifetime in Marvel’s first Asian superhero film. Prior to finding success in the entertainment industry, he was laid off from the consulting firm Deloitte, where he worked as an accountant for nine months after graduating from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario.
5. Finding Me // Viola Davis
Best known for her starring performance as Annalise Keating on ABC’s hit drama How to Get Away With Murder , actress Viola Davis wrote this much-celebrated memoir “for anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades.” Finding Me channels this very honesty as Davis bravely writes about her rise to fame despite the trauma and adversity she has experienced throughout her lifetime. Davis attended and graduated from the Juilliard School in 1993 and is the first Black woman to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony for acting—earning her the coveted title of Triple Crown winner.
6. Behind the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard // Tom Felton
Prepare to meet a real-life “wizard” as you crack open the pages of Behind the Wand , a recent memoir by Harry Potter star Tom Felton. In it, the actor shares fun-filled, behind-the-scenes anecdotes of life on-set as Draco Malfoy , reflects on his mischievous childhood as the youngest of four brothers, and gets vulnerable about his struggles with mental health and addiction after wrapping the films. Not only that, but Felton reveals many fascinating, long-kept secrets throughout the book, including the fact that he’s “always had a secret love” for costar Emma Watson and knew next to nothing about the famous fantasy book series during the audition process.
7. Taste: My Life Through Food // Stanley Tucci
Whether you know actor Stanley Tucci from his scene-stealing roles in films like The Devil Wears Prada or The Hunger Games series, or from his food-centric travel show Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (or even through his two popular Italian-style cookbooks), his memoir Taste: My Life Through Food is an absolute delight. In it, he shares mouthwatering recipes and evocative, yet lighthearted, stories about growing up in Westchester, New York, as the grandson of Italian immigrants. Additionally, he traces how food has shaped his life, loves, and ultra-successful career. The self-proclaimed foodie knows his stuff, and in the early days of the pandemic, his high-end, DIY Negroni tutorial even went viral online.
8. Making a Scene // Constance Wu
As an actress and activist, Constance Wu rose to fame thanks to her roles in the ABC comedy Fresh Off The Boat and the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians , both of which boasted predominantly Asian-led casts and further championed Asian-American representation in media. In this debut collection of personal essays, Wu shares memories of her early childhood and reveals her harrowing experience of rape, abuse, and sexual assault. The star also muses on finding solace in acting, a career where embracing big emotions isn’t just accepted—but encouraged. Wu’s critically acclaimed performances have earned her multiple award nominations, including at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, plus a spot on the Time 100 Most Influential People of 2017 list .
9. Becoming // Michelle Obama
Becoming is a moving memoir penned by Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the United States and the first Black woman to ever serve in that role. The book begins by recounting Obama’s formative years growing up on the South Side of Chicago and traces the entirety of her incredible life and career, through her influential time in the White House and beyond. In each chapter, she reflects on topics ranging from her massive public health campaign to her experiences as a mother, as well as her historic impact on the world as a whole.
Becoming was initially released in 24 different languages and with more than 17 million copies sold worldwide, it is now regarded as one of the bestselling books of all time. A documentary of the same name, which followed Obama’s book tour in promotion of the memoir, was released by Netflix in 2020. In 2022, she also released a follow-up, The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.
10. The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music // Dave Grohl
As a twice-inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member, Dave Grohl has lent his musical talents to multiple legendary rock and grunge bands over the years, including Scream, Nirvana , and Foo Fighters. In The Storyteller , he shares stories about his early childhood in Virginia, his reckless days as a dirt-broke touring musician, and his life-changing experience of becoming a father. The audiobook version also features a bonus chapter that’s not included in the physical book, plus five snippets of never-before-heard original demos produced and performed by Grohl himself.
11. My Body // Emily Ratajkowski
This debut collection of memoir-style, feminist essays from actress, model, and activist Emily Ratajkowski gives readers an up-close and personal look at her work in the modeling and entertainment industries. Told in a non-linear format, Ratajkowski’s stories reveal the relentless challenges she faced with abuse and harassment while building the foundation of her successful career, including her involvement in the music video for the controversial 2013 song “Blurred Lines,” as well as her experiences with sexual assault. Her essay titled Buying Myself Back , which appears in the collection, was first published in The Cut in 2020.
12. Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing // Matthew Perry
The title says it all: Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is actor and comedian Matthew Perry’s bestselling tell-all in which he writes candidly about his experience on Friends , one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. In true Chandler Bing fashion, the work blends earnestness with Perry’s own signature sarcasm and dry humor, as he also recounts his various romantic relationships over the years and delves into his decades-long struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
Perry originally began writing the book in the Notes app on his iPhone , tapping out his life story during a long-term stay in a Los Angeles hospital where he suffered from pneumonia, an exploded colon, and experienced a brief stint on life support, followed by two weeks in a coma and multiple stomach surgeries.
13. She Memes Well // Quinta Brunson
Quinta Brunson is best known as the creator and star of the hit ABC comedy Abbott Elementary . But before she found fame on the show, she wrote and starred in countless viral video sketches at Buzzfeed, and gained a big following on social media for her self-produced Instagram video series Girl Who Has Never Been On a Nice Date.
In her 2021 debut essay collection, She Memes Well, the award-winning writer, actress, and comedian writes with humor and heart about growing up in West Philadelphia, becoming “Internet famous,” and the importance of staying true to yourself at all costs. In 2022, Brunson became the first Black woman to be nominated three times in the same year for the comedy category at the Emmy Awards (she won for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series).
14. If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t) // Betty White
The late Betty White ’s trailblazing career in the entertainment industry spanned more than seven decades. Whether you know her from her iconic roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show or The Golden Girls (or from her later performances in modern rom-coms like The Proposal) , her 2011 collection of memoir-style essays reflects just what a national treasure she was.
In the book, White shares hilarious stories and heartfelt commentary on her extensive work in show business as a pioneer of early television and the first woman to ever produce a sitcom. She earned plenty of awards and accolades along the way, and even made the Guinness World Records in 2013 for Longest TV Career for an Entertainer (Female), in recognition of her 70-odd years in front of (and behind) the camera.
15. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) // Mindy Kaling
Watch almost any episode of the NBC sitcom The Office and it’s easy to see why Mindy Kaling’s sharp wit and signature sense of humor had a major hand in bringing one of the most celebrated comedies of all time to life on screen. But did you know that before she made her way to television, Kaling’s comedy first took center stage in Matt & Ben , a satirical , “bromantic” play about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s friendship? In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me , the award-winning actress, writer, director, and producer shares this little-known origin story and more in essays that radiate cool, big-sister-giving-you-life-advice energy in the best way. The Mindy Project star followed this book up with a second collection, titled Why Not Me?, in 2015.
16. Me // Elton John
With more than 300 million records sold worldwide and a career in music spanning over six decades, Elton John is easily one of the most prolific artists of all time. His official autobiography, aptly titled Me , aims to capture as much of the British singer, pianist, and composer’s fascinating life as possible, from his childhood music lessons and early days of fame to his extremely public struggle with a drug addiction. The star also delves into his experiences as a father, and his continued success as a musician and producer today. The majority of the audiobook version is narrated by Taron Egerton, who played John in the hit 2019 biopic Rocketman .

‘Melissa Clark Could Make a Phone Book Delicious’
Melissa’s five-star cauliflower shawarma is a veritable New York Times Cooking classic.
By Mia Leimkuhler
Hello there! Are the lilacs going completely nuts where you live? My street is exploding in purple, and I highly recommend sticking your nose right into a cluster of blooms and inhaling deeply. Kinda smells like vanilla ice cream, right?
Another recent (nonfloral) development: I’ve been cooking mostly vegetarian meals lately. I wish I could say this is for some noble cause, but it’s really because the grocery store closest to me doesn’t sell meat and I’m lazy. This means I’ve discovered a bunch of vegetarian recipes that are now favorites on heavy rotation: cheesy cabbage tteokbokki , eggplant dal and this insanely good cauliflower shawarma .
The reader notes for this five-star Melissa Clark recipe are ecstatic. “I have been married for 31 years, and my husband said this was the best dish I ever made. He gave it 12 stars out of 10. It was enjoyable, and very difficult to stop eating it,” writes Cheraud. “Melissa Clark could make a phone book delicious,” notes Z. Stafford. And I particularly appreciate the enthusiasm and honesty of RP: “Have made this two more times since my initial review. Eating it while stoned is currently the main source of joy and self-fulfillment in my life.”

Hetty Lui McKinnon’s roasted potato salad with jalapeño-avocado dressing is another vegetarian stunner: Roasted potatoes, cannellinis, green beans and plenty of dill are tossed in a creamy, zesty mix of blended avocado, garlic, lime and chile. It’s a satisfying main, and it would also — if I may allow my brain to drift away from emails to weekend dinner gatherings — be stellar alongside simply roasted whole fish and a citrus salad .
Instead of digging through the New York Times Cooking archive for vegetarian recipes (which is still really fun), I usually just let my colleague Tanya Sichynsky tell me what to make in her Veggie newsletter . That’s how I came across the cauliflower shawarma, and these mushroom smash burgers I made two nights in a row. The Veggie: not just for vegetarians!
Because of easy access to fruits and vegetables, I’m also leaning on dishes that employ protein as a supporting or swappable player, not the marquee star. Panang curry features tender chicken pieces, but I’d argue that the sauce is the draw: a rich mix of coconut milk, ground peanuts, spices and red curry paste that would be delicious on tofu or vegetables.
This skillet chicken with black beans, rice and chiles , a recipe by Diana Henry adapted by Margaux Laskey, is certainly centered on succulent, bone-in skin-on chicken. But I’m also here for the cumin-scented rice and beans, bright tomatoes, Fresnos and all those glorious extras (pickled chiles, sour cream, sliced avocado).
Lastly, even though we’re heading into the season of berries and stone fruits, there’s always a place in my heart for citrus desserts. Yossy Arefi’s new citrusy shortbread is a perfect bit of easy weekend baking or weekday procrastibaking : just one bowl and six ingredients, one of which is whatever mix of citrus zests you like. The reader notes are again happy here. “Baked up perfectly — I added a little rosemary to the zest because it felt good. And it tasted good too!” writes Delicious! (actual reader name).
