Best way to get GW2 research notes

If you want to craft Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons expansion items, you need the new Research Notes currency. Lots and lots of Research Notes.

Some popular uses for GW2 Research Notes are for crafting:

  • Jade Bot Cores and Modules to upgrade your Jade Bot.
  • Armor and weapons with the Harrier’s, Dragon’s, or Ritualist’s stats.
  • Shadow Serpent weapon skins.

How to get Research Notes

Research Notes come from salvaging craftable items.

  • Each kit has 250 charges.
  • You get one free when you unlock Jade Bots.
  • You can buy them from an assortment of vendors for 2 Silver.
  • Crafted armor.
  • Crafted weapons.
  • Crafted tonics.
  • Crafted jewelry.
  • Crafted potions, Tier 2 crafting level (Initiate) and above.
  • Utility items , Tier 2 crafting level (Initiate) and above.
  • Loaf of Walnut Sticky Bread.
  • Omnomberry Compote.
  • Raspberry Peach Compote.
  • Bowl of Blackberry Pie Filling.
  • Bowl of Cherry Pie Filling.
  • Loaf of Tarragon Bread.
  • Probably a bunch of others people haven’t added to the Wiki yet.
  • The Research Kit works like a salvage kit.
  • Double-click the Research Kit, then click the item to salvage it.
  • Research Notes are deposited directly into your account wallet.
  • The higher the item’s value, the more Research Notes it drops.
  • Sigils and Runes are destroyed by the Research Kit.

The fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to get Research Notes

With all that in mind, what are the best ways to get GW2 Research Notes?

Our pick: Craft Silver and Gold jewelry

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Jeweler items are virtually worthless on the Trading Post. The materials to make them (Silver Ore, Gold Ore, Lumps, and Shards) can’t be used to make anything else.

Best of all, if you’re crafting the items yourself, you can skip the salvage step. If you have a Research Kit in your inventory, tick the box on the crafting UI to automatically salvage the items you craft. They are transformed directly into Research Notes and deposited into your account wallet.

Read more about Jeweler in our Jeweler crafting guide.

If you have leftovers: Halloween foods and some potions

All the Halloween foods and some of the Halloween potions are salvageable for 1 Research Note apiece. This is an excellent way to free up space on your holiday alt !

If you have too much of a good thing: Ascended Items

Don’t buy or craft Ascended items just to salvage them for Research Notes. However, if you have unused Ascended items cluttering up your storage, each one gives 500 Research Notes .

If your Ascended item can’t be salvaged for Research Notes because it’s not craftable, the wiki says you can stat-change the item to normal Ascended gear in the Mystic Forge.

Crafted armor sets

If you plan to buy armor pieces to salvage for Research Notes, the following armor sets are craftable and yield Research Notes:

Fine and Masterwork

  • Bloodsaw Leather
  • Embroidered
  • Iron Legion
  • Tempered Scale
  • Light Illustrious
  • Medium Illustrious
  • Heavy Illustrious

Crafted weapon sets

If you plan to buy weapons to salvage for Research Notes, the following weapon sets are craftable and yield Research Notes:

  • Charged Stormcaller
  • Dragonsblood
  • Dragon Slayer
  • Illuminated Boreal
  • Restored Boreal
  • Shadow Serpent
  • Stormcaller
  • Fiery Dragon Slayer
  • Heroic Dragonsblood
  • Icy Dragon Slayer

Where do i get research notes?

Do i need the mastery for it?

Cause i bought the resarch notes thing, the research salvage kit, but the only thing it wants to salvage is my ascended weapons and superior runes...

I'm not prepared to make that exchange just to see i'll get 5 research notes or somethign.

Is this working as intended? Or do i need a mastery for this to work properly?

Perferably as spoiler free as possible.

Like, if i need a jade bot, just say, you need jade bot, don't spoil half the story on how i get the jade bot and what events and story parts lead to that.

You use the research salvage kit to salvage any craftable item.

It doesn't have have to be something you crafted yourself, just an item that has a corresponding recipe. You can buy stuff on tp, too.

Personally, I had a bunch of christmas and halloween food lying around, and I salvaged those.

Thanks

Follow-up, strawberry ghosts work and are dirt cheap.

Ah, so that doesn't include indentified gear then? Cause most of that is also craftable, but doesn't actually let me salvage it.

I'll try with the ghosts! Thanks!

Is this working with the latest update?

LucianDK.8615

It still does. Buy 4c weak potion of something on tp. I made 5000 research notes.

But its the Pieces of Dragon Jade that is the pain point for Jadebot crafting.

Has the research salvage kit been fixed and is working again as of now???

yes it works now

Had a guildie accidentally buy 250 research salvage kits instead of just a single one that does 250.  He now has 45k+ research notes.  He said even his auto-clicker is tired!  😄

Well they were. It looks like most Craftable food has evened out around 1s. A few like Roasted Parsnips or and Portabellas are slightly cheaper, but not a ton. Are there any non food items that haven't spiked yet?

Everything spiked probably.

I mean, judging by the research kit functionality, they were designed to do exactly this, to get rid of the useless items on tp no one wants to buy and Be a good sink in the process.

Also, tp barons probably bought all those 1c, 2c and everything below 1s, and are now selling it for 1 silver.

And since there's tens of thousands of those items, whoever did that is now even more rich than they were. 😛

Cause all those items literally spiked in 1 day.

So between normal people buying those for salvaging, and tp barons making a profit, the spike was to be expected.

I don't understand this. What determines whether something is salvagable or not?

E.g. "Grilled Portobello Mushroom" is salvagable and Chef lvl 150 whereas "Loaf of Tarragon Bread" is not salvagable and Chef lvl 300

Sleepwalker.1398

Sleepwalker.1398

Does this salvage work on sigils/runes also?

I tried on couple runes, it salvaged but no research notes received.

Then you didn't use a "Research Kit" for the salvage. If you can salvage it with the "Research Kit", it will give you "Research Notes". Don't use the normal salvage kits.

Correct kit was used. I was testing to see if number of notes you get would be higher if you used a major or superior. So suppose you used it on a "Major Rune of Balthazar", it gives you nothing where as others give you some.

As far as I've noticed, the recipes that work with mostly/only cheap vendor-bought materials (e.g. apple sauce) don't work.

It has to be crafted to work.

many low-level crafted items are marked as salvageable, but dont yield any notes when salvaged. for example grilled mushrooms, any kind of flavoured bread, bowls of candy corn custard, the list goes on. its mostly low-level items that are salvageable but dont return anything, but its incredibly inconsistent. Roasted rutabaga returns notes, but grilled mushrooms dont? it doesnt make any sense

Teratus.2859

Teratus.2859

The better the value the more notes you get too. I bought a bunch of cheap pearl exotics on the TP, only spend around 40g and had thousands of notes afterwards. Enough to buy and make everything I wanted from them.

Khisanth.2948

Khisanth.2948

Tarragon Bread might have been disabled because someone was a bit overzealous when disabling Loaf of Bread

Orack.4825

I've read somewhere about using cheap food from halloween/winter festival. I've buyed a stack of them, the cheapest one, and salvage them all. Worked fine for me. ~2g for 250 food and so 250 note.

I have had the same issue.  I crafted several different recipes with a chef, and many do not give research notes.  Is it buggy or just what exactly qualifies?  Guess I'll just make a mound of strawberry ghosts

Right now they are much cheaper to buy even at instant buy price. Crafting is almost 3x as expensive.

The items need to be craftable, it does not need to be crafted.
