A selection of CHM's digital costume and textile images are also accessible via CARLI Digital Collections,  which offers users the capability of zooming in and downloading low-res files of certain.

To find relevant images of clothing in the Digital collections or through our main image database, try one or more of these search strategies:

• Search by year, decade (1887 or 1770)

• Search by the designer (Halston, Bes-Ben)

• Search by article of clothing/accessory name (corset, watch)

• Search by material (silk, fur)

Clothing  - This word is used to mean any sort of textile/garment worn on the body.

Dress –  Though many people’s first associations with this term might be the type of garment (a dress), it can also serve as a general description for clothing practices and accessories. Many contemporary academics who study clothing use the term “dress studies” to describe their field.

Costume  – This word evokes clothing that is special or unusual in some regard, though it is also frequently used in museums and academic scholarship in place of “clothing”. “Costume” as an analytic term helps capture other aspects of daily dress that fall outside the realm of fashion, such as military uniforms or ceremonial garb.

Fashion  - Fashion is a cultural process/ecosystem of consumption that includes “designers, their clientele, shopkeepers, magazine editors, and department store buyers” (Diana Crane,  Fashion and Its Social Worlds, p.168 n2).  In general, it is used to talk about the way clothing trends change over time. The term “fashion” as opposed to “clothing” can also be helpful in describing the dynamic ways clothing consumption choices are connected to age, gender, class, race, and nationality.

Dry Goods Store – This  appears frequently in 19th and 20th-century materials related to the sale of clothing and textiles. These stores sold fabric and other goods that were measured with “dry” measurements or standardized quantities, rather than by volume. “Dry Goods” can also be a collective term for clothing, fabric, and textiles.

Note: The Chicago History Museum's fashion collection is referred to as the Costume Collection , so the term "costume" may be seen more frequently when searching our institutional archives.

A Note on Library of Congress Subject Headings

The study of the history of clothing was originally closely connected to research for constructing theatrical costumes. As a result, early books and resources about historical clothing usually have “costume” in the title. The Library of Congress has recently made a distinction between the subject headings “clothing and dress”  and "costume." The subject heading  Clothing and Dress is assigned anything pertaining to clothing as an everyday practice, while Costume  is used to reference garb worn for stage, screen, or ceremonial purposes. In the Library of Congress system, the subject heading Fashion  is used to refer to the industry that makes clothing for consumers and usually pertains to resources about fashion designers.

The Top 10 Most Interesting History Research Topics

Choosing history research topics is one of the hardest and most time-consuming things to do, especially if there is no guidance. You have to employ the right research skills to find authentic sources and ensure that your history research questions are precise and clear.

So to make your work easier, we have curated history research paper topics for college students and high schoolers, as well as examples of history research questions you can use for your assignment.

What makes a strong history research topic.

Clarity makes a strong history research topic. History is a broad subject, so your topic should be well-defined and your language should be simple enough for the reader to understand the basic outline of your history research project. In other words, there should be no ambiguity. An ambiguous topic will be much harder to write than a clear one.

Tips for Choosing a History Research Topic

  • Understand the requirements. Pay attention to your academic level and make sure that you are clear on what is expected of you. Keep referring to your assignment as you go along to ensure that you do not deviate from it.
  • Choose a topic that interests you. If your history topic is boring, doing the research and writing the paper will become tedious work. It is important that you select a topic that appeals to you and that you will enjoy writing about. Even if you choose a controversial topic, it’s worth pursuing as long as it will motivate you to keep writing.
  • Be objective. Movies such as Pearl Harbor have romanticized history as their subject, so make sure you select a topic based on facts and not merely your opinion. This will help in removing bias from your research questions as well.
  • Begin your search for research sources early. Ensure that there are adequate primary and secondary sources for your research assignment. You can also consult other alternative sources for your research. Remember to also make use of your high school or college librarian. They will guide you toward reliable sources.
  • Consult others when necessary. Whenever your assignment requirements are unclear to you, consult your professor. You can also brainstorm with fellow students to get more ideas on what topic you should select, or visit your university’s writing center to get a refresher on how to write strong topic sentences.

What’s the Difference Between a Research Topic and a Research Question?

A research topic refers to a broad idea that you may have chosen for your history research paper. For example, “modern history” is a general topic from which you can get various, more specific topics, such as “the role of globalization in industrialization.”

A research question takes a broad topic and narrows it down to a more specific subject. Your question will help in selecting the right sources. A research question answers the what, why, and how of the research topic. For example, what role has industrialization played in globalization?

How to Create Strong History Research Questions

A strong history research question should be empirically sound. This means that it should be narrow enough to do an in-depth analysis. However, it should not be so narrow that it can be answered with a simple yes or no. A simple search on Google should not answer your research question.

According to Kristin Poling from the Department of History at Harvard, formulating a research question requires preliminary research. You need to see whether there are authentic sources available to answer your question, and you need to understand where the gaps in the literature are. Strong questions lead to strong thesis statements.

Hooking the Student, Pre-assessment, and Field Trips

Student buy-in is an important part of the inquiry process. Use this  Graffiti Activity (PDF)  to grab student attention and engage them in the process.

This  pre-assessment (PDF) , created in consultation with History Fair teachers, allows you to assess students’ historical thinking skills before the program gets underway.

A field trip to the Chicago History Museum can spark students’ curiosity and allow them to see history displayed in a tangible way. Take inspiration from the following field trip guides:

  • History Fair Detectives Investigative Report (PDF)
  • Explore Breaking Barriers in the Facing Freedom exhibition (PDF)
  • History Fair Activity for the Crossroads Exhibition (PDF)

Topic Selection

Guiding students through topic selection is a foundational job for the History Fair teacher. Topics come from a student’s curiosity, interest, or passion—they cannot be imposed. There are many tactics teachers can use to help students find topics they are passionate about.

  • Our  “History Day and You” (PDF)  handout can help students find a topic that matches their interests.
  • Direct them to the  History Day Topics list (PDF)  on the current theme to look for ideas.
  • Use our  “History Day Interest Survey” Google Form  to help students learn which areas of history interest them (you will need to be signed into a Google account and “Make a Copy” of the survey for yourself before administering it to students).
  • Suggest they identify current issues and help them work backwards to find a similar topic from the past.
  • Encourage students to talk to their elders, or flip through history books and popular history magazines, newsmagazines, or documentaries.
  • Visit or museum or scan online digital collections. Scrolling through the  Encyclopedia of Chicago  can also spark interest.

Worksheets will help students to define and assess their topic to make sure it is doable.

  • Topic Development Worksheet (PDF)

Developing Questions

Developing historical curiosity through questioning gives students tools to handle any inquiry project they may face. Review this  guide to developing questions  and implementing questioning activities for History Fair… and beyond.

Notetaking and Citations

Give students a preferred notetaking system to  avoid plagiarism  and encourage them to maintain their  annotated bibliography  as they conduct their research.

We highly recommend that schools take advantage of the free one-year trial version of  NOODLE TOOLS , available through NHD. See significant improvement in student note-taking, citation and bibliography-making, tasking–and, for the teacher, feedback and management of student work.

These two notetaking guides can also be helpful:

Research and Sources

Visit the  research pathway  for great tips on how to find and the purpose of sources. The  Research Journey PowerPoint  reviews the research process for use in your classroom.

Use this  activity  to discuss the differences between primary and secondary sources.

The  SEARCH graphic organizer  can guide students’ research and help formulate ideas.  (Note that this resource was specifically designed for the 2020 “Breaking Barriers in History” season)

When students analyze their sources, they build critical thinking skills and produce stronger projects. Encourage students to use primary sources as evidence—not illustration. Use the models below, or your favorite analysis worksheet, or the worksheets offered by the  National Archives  or  Library of Congress .

After collecting and analyzing their sources, students will connect them to form claims for their argument.

The  Connect-It graphic organizer  encourages students to make connections among the sources for each segment of their project.

An additional way to prompt students to synthesize their research is to have them do a “ free-write ” about everything they have found out.  A Free-write can then lead to more organized ways of developing an argument and is an effective formative assessment too.

The  “DocsTeach”  website by the National Archives also has great interactive tools to help students process and weigh evidence.

The thesis statement is a one or two sentence stance on a historical issue. It may explain why or how something happened, express an interpretation related to the NHD theme, and/or suggest the larger significance of historical events or actions.  The thesis is the answer to their historical question.  Students often struggle to define and refine their thesis statements.

Use the  How to Write a Thesis  and  History Fair Thesis: What’s it all About  activities, and the  Thesis PowerPoint,  to direct students through this challenging process. The  Thesis Development Worksheet  provides a format for using the theme.

Teachers may find the  Thesis Rubric  a useful tool for evaluating students’ theses. Further reading about thesis statements can be found in this  online writing guide  by Patrick Rael of Bowdoin College.

Claims and Evidence

This  Organize Your Argument  worksheet helps organize the students’ work into arguments and sections they can use to build their final projects. Another option is this  Argumentation Plan .

Project Category Guides

History Fair students present their research findings in one of five formats, known as “categories:” exhibits, documentaries, performances, websites, or historical papers. Each History Fair category has its own strengths and weaknesses and might be right for different students in your classes.

Visit the  NHD Project Categories page  to learn about the specific rules, learn tips from experts, and see previous NHD winners in each project category.

Use the  You Be the Judge  classroom activity to provide students with an authentic experience in evaluation and to prompt them to think critically about their own projects. We suggest you introduce this activity mid-way in the students’ own projects.

No matter the category, History Fair projects are judged based on their historical quality (knowledge and analysis), relation to the national theme, and clarity of presentation.

See the NHD evaluation forms for each category here:  (please note that as of the 2021 season, these evaluations are no longer used at any level of History Fair/History Day competition)

  • Documentary
  • Performance

Stay tuned for exciting rule changes for the 2022 season!

All students must have a summary statement form ( PDF file ,  Word document , or  Google Doc ) and  annotated bibliography .

“The past is a foreign country,” the novelist L.P. Hartley wrote in 1953. “They do things differently there.” Our courses introduce students to the ways in which people, ideas, cultures, and societies have changed over time. History majors and minors learn to engage with issues affecting both past and present from a variety of perspectives, as well as research, writing, and rhetorical skills that will serve them far beyond their history coursework.

History offers undergraduate courses that touch every corner of the globe and range in time from the ancient world to the twenty-first century. Our faculty teach courses that focus on issues that remain critical in our current world—race, gender, sexuality, religion, economics, globalization, law, and war—as well as courses on topics that continue to shape identity, politics, and culture, like sports, fashion, food, literature, and art. We believe part of the joy of history is that of discovery. To that end, History students are given significant freedom to explore the Department’s diverse offerings as they fulfill the requirements of their degree.

Studying history at the University of Chicago enables you to become not just a consumer of academic knowledge, but a scholar in your own right. History Majors will approach the study of the past through different perspectives and methodologies, while developing specialized expertise in their chosen geographic or thematic major field. Students will also consider the nature of historical evidence, hone their writing skills, and become comfortable making historical arguments based on primary sources and on the work of other scholars.

History majors have the option of pursuing the Thesis Track, the Capstone Track, or the Colloquium Track. Thesis Track students undertake a year-long independent research project and produce a piece of original historical scholarship. Capstone Track students also perform rigorous independent research, but produce historical scholarship that takes an alternate form, such as a documentary, a podcast, an art installation, or a website. Colloquium Track students have no final project requirement and instead take additional electives, a course of study that works well for students with multiple majors or other time constraints, pre-med students, or students with broad historical interests.

The Major Field

All History majors select a geographic or thematic field on which to focus their historical study.

Geographic Fields: Africa, Ancient Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America, Russia, South Asia

Thematic Fields: Economic, Empire, Environment, Gender/Sexuality, Intellectual, Legal, Race, Religion, Science/Technology/Medicine, Urban

Students take 6 courses, or half their major, in their field of choice. (And if you want to pursue a major field not on our list, you can petition to do so!)

Methods Courses

All History majors complete two methods courses:

Historiography (HIST 29803) – Historiography is an introduction to the nuts and bolts of historical practice: what is it that historians do when they do history? How do they make arguments, evaluate evidence, and write narratives that tell us something true about the past? Students will walk away with a sense of the debates that animate historians, the range of approaches to historical argumentation and narrative, and an understanding of how interpretation of evidence relates to historical methodologies.

Research Colloquium (HIST 296xx) – Research Colloquia are offered every quarter on a variety of topics. With the guidance of their professor, students will craft a research paper of approximately 15-20 pages based on primary sources. For Thesis Track students, it’s a warmup round; for students in other tracks, the course provides a taste of original historical research and scholarship.

Seminars and Electives

In addition to their Major Field courses and Methods requirements, students

…in the Thesis track take BA Seminar I, II, and III (2 credits total, spanning Spring of 3rd year to Winter of 4th year), along with 2 History electives.

…in the Capstone track take BA Seminar I and Capstone Seminar I and II (2 credits total, spanning Spring of 3rd year to Winter of 4th year), along with 2 History electives.

…in the Colloquium track take 4 History electives.

Other Requirements

History majors in all tracks must take courses in at least two geographic regions, and at least one course that treats history before 1800, and at least one course that treats history after 1800.

History Majors’ courses

—can be double counted with another major if they are cross listed (for example, a History and NELC major may count a course that has both HIST and NEHC course numbers toward both majors).

—must be taken for quality grades.

For further details about the major requirements, please explore the history program pages in the College Catalog.

The Importance of Learning History

Often mistaken as mere retrospection, history is, in truth, a powerful lens through which we discern the continuum of human experience. Understanding history, especially in a city as illustrious as Chicago, grants us a clearer insight into the human narrative and offers profound lessons that shape our collective future.

  • Comprehending Cause and Effect

Diving deep into history develops a keen sense of cause and effect. By studying the sequence of events, decisions, and their subsequent consequences, we train our minds to foresee possible outcomes in our own lives. For instance, understanding the socioeconomic conditions that led to the Chicago Pullman Strike can inform modern views on labor rights and industrial relationships.

  • Empathy and Cultural Understanding

Encountering tales of ancient struggles, achievements, and day-to-day life enables us to walk in the shoes of those who came before. This cultivates a heightened empathy, allowing us to better understand and appreciate the diverse tapestry of human stories and the myriad cultures they spring from.

  • Guidance for the Present

As the adage goes, “History repeats itself.” By studying the past, we arm ourselves with the knowledge to recognize patterns, prevent pitfalls, and harness strategies that have proven effective before. Chicago’s resilience post-Great Fire is a testament to human endurance and innovation — a story that inspires global urban planners and policymakers.

  • Inspiration for the Future

Every story of triumph in the face of adversity, every account of innovation and vision, serves as a beacon for future endeavors. Learning about pioneers like Jane Addams or the architectural ingenuity that Chicago boasts can act as a catalyst, spurring contemporary minds to craft their legacies.

  • Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills

Deciphering historical accounts necessitates discernment, especially when confronted with divergent sources or biased narratives. This hones critical thinking, a skill indispensable in today’s era of information overload.

  • Grounding and Identity

A Brief Guide to Academic Paper Writing

Crafting an academic paper, especially on a topic as rich as a Chicago history fair subject, can be a rewarding venture. It’s not merely about stringing facts together but about telling a story, constructing an argument, and contributing a voice to the ongoing conversation of historical scholarship. Here’s a concise guide to navigating the intricate process:

  • Choosing Your Focus

Begin with your interest. While many Chicago history fair topics beckon, selecting one that resonates with you is crucial. An authentic curiosity ensures sustained motivation and a deeper connection with your research.

  • Thorough Research

Before putting pen to paper, immerse yourself in exhaustive research. Visit libraries, engage with primary sources, and delve into digital archives. With its storied past, Chicago offers many resources waiting to be unearthed.

  • Crafting a Thesis Statement

Your thesis is the heartbeat of your paper, a brief, clear claim that your research seeks to prove. Ensure it’s specific, defensible, and offers fresh insight into your chosen Chicago history fair topic.

  • Structuring Your Paper

A well-structured paper guides the reader seamlessly. Typically, an academic paper follows the trajectory of an introduction (with the thesis), body paragraphs (supporting the thesis), and a conclusion (reinforcing the thesis and offering final insights).

  • Citing Sources

Academic writing demands integrity. Every claim should be substantiated with a credible source only if it is common knowledge. Please familiarize yourself with citation styles like APA, MLA, or Chicago and use them consistently.

  • Engaging the Reader

While accuracy and evidence are pillars of academic writing, engagement is its soul. Weave a narrative. Use evocative language when discussing the vibrant streets of historic Chicago or the bustling atmosphere of its stockyards. Paint pictures with words, making the past palpable.

  • Revision and Peer Review

A paper’s first draft is rarely its best version. Take time to revise, refine, and tighten your arguments. Moreover, a peer review offers fresh perspectives and can spotlight areas for improvement that you might have overlooked.

  • Avoiding Plagiarism

Academic integrity is paramount. Always give credit where it’s due and ensure your work is original. Tools like Turnitin or Grammarly can be invaluable in cross-checking your work against potential matches online.

  • Concluding with Impact

A conclusion shouldn’t merely rehash your paper but provide a synthesis. Link back to your thesis and offer broader implications, drawing connections between your Chicago history fair topic and larger historical themes or contemporary issues.

  • Seeking Feedback

Never shy away from critiques. Engaging with professors, fellow students, or academic mentors can offer invaluable insights and perfectly polish your paper.

Remember, academic writing is as much an art as a science. As you delve into your chosen Chicago history fair topic, you’re not merely recording events but weaving a tapestry that captures the spirit, challenges, triumphs, and idiosyncrasies of a time gone by. It’s a responsibility and a privilege. Embrace it with passion and diligence.

Making History Tangible

History study often risks being perceived as merely an academic exercise confined to textbooks and lecture halls. Yet, the essence of history is vibrantly alive, an ever-unfolding tapestry of human experiences and lessons. By making history tangible, we enhance its appeal and underscore its relevance to contemporary issues. Especially when exploring topics such as the Chicago history fair, the aim should be to breathe life into the past, illuminating the path that led us here. Here’s how one can do that:

  • Historical Reenactments

One of the most immersive ways to make history come alive is through reenactments. By stepping into the shoes of historical figures or embodying a moment in time, participants and observers get a firsthand feel of history’s texture. Imagine reliving the hustle and bustle of 1920s Chicago or witnessing the enthusiasm of its political rallies.

  • Interactive Exhibitions

Modern technology has made it possible to create dynamic, interactive exhibitions. Augmented and virtual reality can transport visitors to a different era, letting them stroll down historic Chicago streets or attend a jazz club from the Prohibition era.

  • Oral Histories

Narratives passed down through generations give a voice to those who lived through pivotal moments. Recording and preserving these tales offer rich, personal insights that textbooks might miss. They humanize history, reminding us of the lived experiences behind each event.

  • Historical Walking Tours

There’s magic in walking the grounds where history was made. Organized walking tours of historic districts, landmarks, or significant sites in Chicago can offer an intimate connection with the past. The echoes of ancient days resonate more deeply when standing on the cobblestones where history unfolded.

  • Engaging Workshops

Workshops that teach historic crafts, trades, or arts can be immensely engaging. For instance, a workshop on vintage Chicagoan printmaking or 19th-century culinary traditions can offer a tactile connection to the past.

  • Documentaries and Films

Visual storytelling can transport viewers back in time. Well-researched and artistically crafted documentaries or films can provide a cinematic gateway into the heart of historic events, making them feel immediate and visceral.

  • Historical Fiction

While it’s essential to differentiate between fiction and factual accounts, historical fiction novels can spark interest and foster a deeper emotional connection to events or eras. They craft a narrative around factual backdrops, making history more relatable.

  • Authentic Artifacts

Handling artifacts, whether letters, tools, garments, or everyday items from a specific era, forms a tangible link to the past. Museums and exhibitions that allow tactile engagement with artifacts make history feel immediate and real.

Making history tangible is about bridging the temporal divide, creating avenues for modern individuals to connect, empathize with, and understand the myriad stories and lessons from the past. As we delve deeper into topics like the Chicago History fair, the goal is not just to learn but to feel, to immerse oneself in the ebb and flow of time and emerge with a richer appreciation of the tapestry of human existence.

As we journey through the annals of time, we discover that history is more than a mere collection of dates, events, and personalities. It’s the resonating heartbeat of countless lives intertwined, a mirror reflecting our shared humanity, achievements, struggles, and aspirations. The Chicago history fair topic serves as a splendid testament to this sentiment, encapsulating the vibrant spirit of a city that has weathered storms and celebrated triumphs, shaping America’s cultural and socio-political landscape.

Exploring Chicago’s past is about more than just acknowledging its significant contributions. It’s a compelling invitation to delve deep into a city’s ethos, understand its essence, and find reflections of its indomitable spirit in our present circumstances. Such explorations underscore the vital importance of preserving and understanding our history. It provides context, wisdom, and insights to guide our steps forward.

Moreover, as we’ve observed, history needn’t remain a two-dimensional recounting on the pages of a textbook. By employing innovative and immersive techniques – from historical reenactments to interactive exhibitions we can bring history to life, making it tangible, relevant, and deeply resonant.

As students, educators, or merely curious souls, when we embark on quests like the Chicago history fair, we’re not just learning history but experiencing it. Such endeavors remind us that history is alive, evolving, and, most importantly, a part of us. As we look toward the future, these historical foundations will anchor our path, helping us craft a narrative that future generations will seek to explore, understand, and cherish.

History and the Range of Easy Research Paper Topics It Offers

History is an inexhaustible well of knowledge, a vast tapestry of time. As a field of study, it presents a unique opportunity for scholarly exploration, providing a multitude of easy research paper topics. This academic realm invites curiosity and exploration, as it encompasses a broad spectrum of periods, events, figures, and themes. So, let’s dive into the heart of this field, exploring its rich depth and breadth, while uncovering the range of easy research paper topics it offers.

Understanding History

At its core, history is the study of past events, civilizations, and significant figures, and how they have influenced the present. It offers us the ability to perceive patterns over time and draw conclusions based on these patterns. It serves as a vital instrument for understanding the human condition, shedding light on societal structures, cultures, ideas, conflicts, innovations, and transformations.

History is not confined to political or military events. It spans a vast range of categories, including but not limited to social, cultural, intellectual, economic, environmental, and public history. It encompasses diverse geographical regions and time periods, from the ancient civilizations to the contemporary era, from the local to the global scale. This multidimensional nature of history offers a broad range of topics for research papers, catering to different interests, skills, and academic levels.

Easy Research Paper Topics in History

Embarking on a historical research journey does not always imply tackling complex, intricate topics. There are numerous easy research paper topics, perfect for students beginning their historical exploration. The key lies in selecting a topic that is clear, manageable, and yet still richly informative. Here are some guidelines for choosing easy research paper topics in history.

Firstly, consider choosing a specific time period or civilization that interests you. Delving into the lifestyle, political system, economy, or culture of a particular era can provide a wealth of information. For instance, one might study daily life in ancient Rome, the political system of ancient Greece, or the impact of the Industrial Revolution on European society.

Secondly, focusing on significant historical figures can offer fascinating insights. These figures could be political leaders, scholars, artists, or explorers whose contributions have shaped the course of history. Examples include examining the role of Martin Luther in the Protestant Reformation, the influence of Leonardo da Vinci during the Renaissance, or the impact of figures like Nelson Mandela or Simon Bolivar on their respective regions.

Thirdly, turning to key historical events or phenomena can also yield rewarding research topics. Such topics could encompass wars, revolutions, social movements, epidemics, or technological advancements. For example, one could analyze the effects of the American Revolution, the societal impact of the Black Death in Europe, or the significance of the invention of the printing press.

Fourthly, studying the history of ideas, beliefs, or practices can present an engaging area of research. This approach could involve exploring the influence of philosophies like Confucianism or ideologies such as feminism, or examining practices like the caste system in ancient India or feudalism in medieval Europe.

Lastly, thematic or comparative history can be a worthwhile avenue to pursue. How to Choose Easy History Research Paper Topics

Choosing a research paper topic is a crucial step in the process of writing an academic paper. It sets the foundation for your research, guides your investigation, and influences the overall quality of your work. When it comes to selecting easy history research paper topics, you want to find subjects that are manageable, interesting, and allow for ample available resources. In this section, we will provide you with valuable advice on how to choose easy history research paper topics that will make your writing experience more enjoyable and rewarding.

  • Understand Your Assignment : Before diving into the topic selection process, carefully review your assignment guidelines. Pay attention to any specific requirements or restrictions provided by your instructor. Understanding the scope, length, and expectations of your research paper will help you narrow down your options and choose a topic that aligns with the assignment criteria.
  • Consider Your Interests : Selecting a topic that genuinely interests you is key to maintaining motivation and enthusiasm throughout the research and writing process. Think about your personal passions, hobbies, or areas of curiosity within the realm of history. Whether it’s a particular time period, geographic region, or specific historical event, finding a topic that resonates with you will make the research more engaging and enjoyable.
  • Brainstorm Broad Themes : Begin your topic selection process by brainstorming broad themes or categories related to history. Consider major historical periods, civilizations, cultural movements, or significant events that catch your attention. This brainstorming exercise will help you generate a list of potential research areas to explore further.
  • Conduct Preliminary Research : Once you have identified a few broad themes, conduct preliminary research to gain a better understanding of each topic’s scope and available resources. Use reputable online databases, academic journals, books, and other scholarly sources to gather background information and identify key aspects that you find interesting and accessible.
  • Narrow Down Your Focus : After conducting preliminary research, narrow down your focus by selecting a specific aspect or subtopic within your chosen theme. For example, if you are interested in World War II, you might consider researching the role of women during the war, the impact of technology, or the diplomatic strategies employed by different countries. By narrowing down your focus, you can delve deeper into the subject matter and produce a more focused and cohesive research paper.
  • Evaluate Available Sources : When choosing easy history research paper topics, it is essential to ensure that there is a wealth of available sources to support your research. Evaluate the accessibility and availability of primary and secondary sources such as books, scholarly articles, archival documents, interviews, and online resources. Having a rich pool of sources will make your research process smoother and help you develop a well-supported argument in your paper.
  • Consider the Significance : While easy history research paper topics should be manageable, it is still important to consider the significance and relevance of your chosen topic. Ask yourself why your topic matters and how it contributes to the broader understanding of history. A topic that holds significance and offers insights into historical processes, cultural shifts, or social dynamics will enhance the value and impact of your research.
  • Seek Guidance and Feedback : Don’t hesitate to seek guidance and feedback from your instructor, peers, or academic advisors during the topic selection process. They can provide valuable insights, suggest additional resources, and help you refine your research question. Collaborating with others can also inspire new ideas and perspectives that you may not have considered on your own.
  • Be Flexible and Open to Adjustments : As you delve deeper into your research, be open to adjusting or refining your topic if necessary. Sometimes, new information or emerging research interests may lead you to modify your original research question or explore different angles. Being flexible and adaptable will ensure that you stay engaged with your topic and produce the most compelling research paper possible.
  • Trust Your Instincts : Ultimately, trust your instincts when choosing an easy history research paper topic. Select a topic that resonates with you, aligns with your research interests, and offers a balance between accessibility and scholarly significance. Your passion and genuine interest in the topic will shine through in your writing, making the research process more enjoyable and the final paper more impactful.

Choosing an easy history research paper topic requires careful consideration, thoughtful exploration, and a balance between personal interest and scholarly significance. By understanding your assignment, considering your interests, conducting preliminary research, and evaluating available sources, you can confidently select a topic that aligns with your goals and provides ample opportunities for exploration. Remember to seek guidance, be flexible in your approach, and trust your instincts. With these expert tips, you are well-equipped to embark on a successful research journey in the field of history.

How to Write a History Research Paper

Writing a history research paper can be a rewarding and intellectually stimulating experience. It allows you to delve into the past, explore historical events, and contribute to the existing body of historical knowledge. To ensure a successful research paper, it is essential to follow a systematic approach and employ effective writing strategies. In this section, we will provide you with valuable guidance on how to write a history research paper that is well-structured, persuasive, and academically rigorous.

  • Understand the Assignment : Begin by thoroughly understanding the requirements of your research paper assignment. Familiarize yourself with the guidelines, word count, formatting style, and specific instructions provided by your instructor. Pay attention to the research question or thesis statement, as it will serve as the backbone of your paper and guide your writing process.
  • Conduct In-Depth Research : Before you start writing, conduct in-depth research on your chosen topic. Gather relevant primary and secondary sources, including books, scholarly articles, archival documents, and reputable online resources. Take meticulous notes and ensure that you cite your sources accurately to avoid plagiarism. The more comprehensive your research, the stronger your argument and the more credible your paper will be.
  • Develop a Clear Thesis Statement : Craft a clear and concise thesis statement that reflects the main argument or perspective of your research paper. Your thesis statement should be specific, debatable, and supported by evidence from your research. It serves as a roadmap for your paper, guiding your analysis and shaping the overall structure of your argument.
  • Create an Outline : Organize your thoughts and ideas by creating a well-structured outline for your research paper. Divide your paper into sections, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each section should focus on a specific aspect of your research and contribute to the overall coherence and flow of your paper.
  • Write a Compelling Introduction : Start your research paper with a compelling introduction that captures the reader’s attention and provides necessary background information. Clearly state your research question or thesis statement and briefly outline the main points you will address in your paper. Engage the reader by highlighting the significance of your research topic and its relevance to the field of history.
  • Develop Coherent Body Paragraphs : In the body of your research paper, present and analyze the evidence that supports your thesis statement. Each body paragraph should focus on a specific aspect of your argument and provide supporting evidence from your research. Use clear and concise language, and ensure that each paragraph transitions smoothly to the next, creating a coherent and logical flow of ideas.
  • Engage with Primary and Secondary Sources : Demonstrate your understanding of the historical context by engaging with both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include original documents, artifacts, and eyewitness accounts from the time period you are studying, while secondary sources are scholarly interpretations and analyses of primary sources. Use a combination of both to provide a well-rounded and evidence-based argument.
  • Analyze and Interpret the Evidence : Rather than merely presenting facts, critically analyze and interpret the evidence you have gathered. Demonstrate your ability to evaluate different perspectives, weigh the strengths and weaknesses of arguments, and draw insightful conclusions. Support your analysis with evidence and scholarly interpretations from reputable sources.
  • Use Proper Citation and Formatting : Adhere to the required citation style (such as APA, MLA, Chicago, or Harvard) and ensure that you accurately cite all sources used in your research paper. Proper citation not only avoids plagiarism but also enhances the credibility and academic integrity of your work. Pay attention to formatting guidelines, including headings, in-text citations, and the bibliography or references section.
  • Craft a Persuasive Conclusion : In your conclusion, restate your thesis statement and summarize the main points of your research paper. Reflect on the significance of your findings and their implications for the broader understanding of the historical topic. Avoid introducing new information but rather leave the reader with a thought-provoking insight or a call to further research.

Writing a history research paper requires careful planning, in-depth research, and effective writing strategies. By understanding the assignment, conducting thorough research, developing a clear thesis statement, creating an outline, and engaging with primary and secondary sources, you can craft a compelling and academically rigorous paper. Remember to analyze and interpret the evidence, use proper citation and formatting, and conclude your paper with a persuasive reflection. With these guidelines, you are well-equipped to embark on a successful journey in writing a history research paper.

Program Overview

Through free editorial service, mentorship, and workshops, the program will help scholars prepare academic article manuscripts for submission to the venue of their choice.

The journal devised this program to demystify scholarly publication processes for scholars who are having difficulty getting an article published. When institutions provide research and publishing grants, paid leave, and structured writing support to faculty, staff and students, these scholars’ publication acceptance rates improve. Unfortunately, not all scholars enjoy these benefits. The American Art journal wants to bridge this gap. Our goal is to invigorate and diversify the field at large.

Toward Equity in Publishing is a new initiative designed to remediate the inequitable conditions that precede and impede publication in the field of American art history. This professional development program is being launched by the peer-reviewed journal American Art, which is co-published by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and University of Chicago Press. It is supported by grants from the Dedalus Foundation.

  • 40 hours of free editing service from a professional editor, conducted at the author’s convenience over a period of up to two years
  • Six months of workshops on finding the right venue for your work, preparing your manuscript for the best possible fit, anticipating what readers will need, post-outlining, managing image rights and reproductions, finding a publisher for your book, and responding to peer-reviews
  • A writing group cohort of six author-participants, plus a larger network as the program grows
  • Weekly optional co-writing sessions open to all participants
  • Double-anonymized peer reviews provided by subject-area experts
  • A one-on-one meeting with the American Art journal’s executive editor about your publishing strategy
  • Two years of access to program materials

With the continued generosity of the Dedalus Foundation, participants will now receive a one-time $1,000 stipend to offset participation costs such as family care, missed wages, or research expenses.

Some institutions provide their students, faculty, and staff with research and publishing grants, paid leave, and structured writing support; such perquisites increase these scholars’ publication acceptance rates. Not all scholars enjoy these benefits. American Art wants to bridge this gap. Our goal is to invigorate and diversify the field at large.

Participants meet once a month. To take full advantage of the program, participants are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings and other occasional workshops available during the program. Currently, the meetings take place on the second Monday of the month, 4:00pm—6:00pm ET. Co-writing sessions are available weekly and are open to all participants across the cohorts. These sessions are not mandatory.

The Dedalus grant allows the program to contract experienced and highly skilled editors. The editors provide developmental and line editing support to the TEP author-participants by engaging with the argument, evidence, structure, and prose. They will guide the author through revision. Each selected author will receive 40 hours of editing support for a single article-length manuscript.

Author presentations are not part of the curriculum, although participants may share their work with each other.

Yes. The journal’s executive editor or another staff-member will attend most of the monthly meetings and provide some of the workshops. There may be opportunities to meet editorial board members on request.

The TEP program is currently digital. Participants meet as a group and with developmental editors via Zoom. Workshops are also available through Zoom and some are prerecorded.

Month 1 : Meet the editors. Editor-author pairs set up one-on-one meetings to occur in month one or two. In advance of the meeting, author provides editor with manuscript materials and a reflective memo about your writing goals, challenges, and feedback preferences. In the meeting, talk about structure and major concerns of the article.

Month 2 : Editor performs first round of developmental editing for your article; one-on-one meetings as necessary during this process.

Month 3 : Editor sends you the full article with edits and revision advice.

Month 4 : Independent revision of your abstract, in dialogue with your TEP cohort.

Month 5-6 : Continuing revision with editor as needed, time for additional research and revision.

Month 7-9: If you wish, American Art journal staff will arrange for external peer review of your revised manuscript. Talk to your editor about the timing.

Month 13-14 : write cover letter for the editor of the journal of your choice and/or additional research and revision.

Within two years of start date : Submit your manuscript, if ready. Then, revision in consultation with your developmental editor about peer reviews. Optional one-on-one meeting with Robin Veder about publishing strategy after peer reviews come back. Earlier meetings are also possible.

There is no obligation for the participants to publish with American Art , nor for the journal to publish their work.
