When you complete your TOEFL test, your writing must be evaluated. This is done by a combination of human readers and a computer program called e-rater®. Each of your essays is given a score from 0 to 5. Your combined essay scores are converted to a section score of 0 to 30.
There are four basic criteria on which your essay is evaluated. These four criteria are:

In the TOEFL Writing section, your ability to write in English in an academic setting is assessed. This section comprises two tasks: an Integrated Writing task and an Independent Writing task. You will be given a total of 50 minutes to complete both tasks, and you have the freedom to choose the order in which you complete them.
The TOEFL writing section covers a wide range of topics, including education, technology, environment, and social issues. The Integrated Writing task usually involves reading a passage and listening to a lecture on a related topic, while the Independent Writing task requires you to express and support your opinion on a specific issue.

For this task, you will read a passage on an academic topic. You can take notes while you read the passage. Once the passage is removed, you will listen to a lecture on the same topic. You will be able to see the passage again when it is time for you to write. Here you can use your notes to write the answer.
Reading Passage Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has become a valuable historical source about European society in the eighteenth century. However, some critics have raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir. They claim that the Chevalier distorted or invented many events in the memoir to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous than it really was. For example, in his memoir, the Chevalier claims that while living in Switzerland, he was very wealthy, and it is known that he spent a great deal of money there on parties and gambling. However, evidence has recently surfaced that the Chevalier borrowed considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant. Critics thus argue that if the Chevalier had really been very rich, he would not have needed to borrow money. Critics are also sceptical about the accuracy of the conversations that Chevalier records in the memoir between himself and the famous writer Voltaire. No one doubts that the Chevalier and Voltaire met and conversed. However, critics complain that the memoir cannot possibly capture these conversations accurately because it was written many years after the conversations occurred. Critics point out that it is impossible to remember exact phrases from extended conversations held many years earlier. Critics have also questioned the memoir's account of the Chevalier's escape from a notorious prison in Venice, Italy. He claims to have escaped the Venetian prison by using a piece of metal to make a hole in the ceiling and climbing through the roof. Critics claim that while such a daring escape makes for enjoyable reading, it is more likely that the Chevalier's jailers were bribed to free him. They point out that the Chevalier had a number of politically well-connected friends in Venice who could have offered a bribe. |
Sample Answer:
Giving some logical reasons, the professor is defending the Chevalier memoir and making it reliable. She uses sophistication to make the critics convinced that their claim on memoir is not true. First of all, she mentions the issue of borrowing some money from a merchant by Chevalier. She thinks the Chevalier was in trouble with cash and he hadn't enough time to prepare it . He hadn't time to sell his own properties and estates to provide the money. so the loan is reasonable, and it doesn't show his poverty. Secondly, the critics say that he escaped from jail by bribing the watchman. But we know that there were more powerful men there in the jail with much more powerful friends and relations that made the escape so easy for them, but they weren't able to escape. Therefore, we can accept what the Chevalier has said about the way he managed to escape from the prison using a piece of metal and digging the ceiling. The last reason the critics give on the unreliability of Chevalier's memoir is that the details of the conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire are not truly mentioned in details in Chelavier's memoir. They believe that there's a long period of time between the time they were conversing and the time Chelavier wrote that on paper. And it is impossible to write the exact talk that occurred at that time. However, the professor solved the dilemma easily. From his point of view, the Chevalier had a chance to get the tool due to the watchmen's come and go to repair the ceiling. Overall, the professor is trying to make his opinion seem true. |

Basically, I agree with the idea that it is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts. There are two reasons to make my view convincing. That is because only learning facts makes it easy to get the main point in the wrong ways, and student is easy to lose their concentration on studying. Some people just want to get facts to reduce their learning time. However, it is a really dangerous idea and could be temporary and impermanent knowledge. For instance, when people learn english, they just memorise vocabulary and grammar. This makes people unable to communicate with foreigners even though they have studied english for more than 10 years. That is because they might learn focused on the facts, such as a score on an English test, not trying to study what these words came from, such as prefixes and stems of english. If someone who just learns in wrong way is a teacher, he will definitely use his students in the same method. In turn, it could be a serious problem, especially if it were an educational case.
Furthermore, students who concentrate on only the facts are easy to lose their interest of studying. If they could learn something, how it came from, or how it works, that encourage students to study harder and allow them to develop more creative hypotheses. For instance, when I had a history class in college, there were two kinds of distinctive teachers. One helped me to teach how to get a good grade in terms of the history class teaching only the facts. The other taught me both the answer, such as the name of the war and all processing of the history, such as why a specific war has to be, or what was the problem between two countries. I still remember parts of the history the second teacher taught, although it is not really related to my current major. When students learn something with the concepts and main idea, it will go longer than getting the information about only the facts.
As stated above, I agree with the idea that students should learn both concepts and facts together. That is because it is possible for students to study in a wrong way, which might be dangerous, and getting only facts will lead students to lack interest in studying. It is impossible to overstate the importance of both the process and the result in gaining some knowledge. |

The TOEFL writing test evaluates the candidate’s ability to express their ideas and opinions through writing. The section has two writing tasks, integrated and independent, lasting 50 minutes. The maximum score for the TOEFL writing section is 30.
You can achieve a perfect score of 30 in the TOEFL writing section. You should practice and improve your writing abilities. Large language models like those that power ChatGPT have shown impressive performance on tasks like drafting legal briefs, analyzing the sentiment of customer reviews, or translating documents into different languages.
These machine-learning models typically use only natural language to process information and answer queries, which can make it difficult for them to perform tasks that require numerical or symbolic reasoning.
For instance, a large language model might be able to memorize and recite a list of recent U.S. presidents and their birthdays, but that same model could fail if asked the question “Which U.S. presidents elected after 1950 were born on a Wednesday?” (The answer is Jimmy Carter.)
Researchers from MIT and elsewhere have proposed a new technique that enables large language models to solve natural language, math and data analysis, and symbolic reasoning tasks by generating programs.
Their approach, called natural language embedded programs (NLEPs), involves prompting a language model to create and execute a Python program to solve a user’s query, and then output the solution as natural language.
They found that NLEPs enabled large language models to achieve higher accuracy on a wide range of reasoning tasks. The approach is also generalizable, which means one NLEP prompt can be reused for multiple tasks.
NLEPs also improve transparency, since a user could check the program to see exactly how the model reasoned about the query and fix the program if the model gave a wrong answer.
“We want AI to perform complex reasoning in a way that is transparent and trustworthy. There is still a long way to go, but we have shown that combining the capabilities of programming and natural language in large language models is a very good potential first step toward a future where people can fully understand and trust what is going on inside their AI model,” says Hongyin Luo PhD ’22, an MIT postdoc and co-lead author of a paper on NLEPs .
Luo is joined on the paper by co-lead authors Tianhua Zhang, a graduate student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Jiaxin Ge, an undergraduate at Peking University; Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL); senior author James Glass, senior research scientist and head of the Spoken Language Systems Group in CSAIL; and others. The research will be presented at the Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics.
Problem-solving with programs
Many popular large language models work by predicting the next word, or token, given some natural language input. While models like GPT-4 can be used to write programs, they embed those programs within natural language, which can lead to errors in the program reasoning or results.
With NLEPs, the MIT researchers took the opposite approach. They prompt the model to generate a step-by-step program entirely in Python code, and then embed the necessary natural language inside the program.
An NLEP is a problem-solving template with four steps. First, the model calls the necessary packages, or functions, it will need to solve the task. Step two involves importing natural language representations of the knowledge the task requires (like a list of U.S. presidents’ birthdays). For step three, the model implements a function that calculates the answer. And for the final step, the model outputs the result as a line of natural language with an automatic data visualization, if needed.
“It is like a digital calculator that always gives you the correct computation result as long as the program is correct,” Luo says.
The user can easily investigate the program and fix any errors in the code directly rather than needing to rerun the entire model to troubleshoot.
The approach also offers greater efficiency than some other methods. If a user has many similar questions, they can generate one core program and then replace certain variables without needing to run the model repeatedly.
To prompt the model to generate an NLEP, the researchers give it an overall instruction to write a Python program, provide two NLEP examples (one with math and one with natural language), and one test question.
“Usually, when people do this kind of few-shot prompting, they still have to design prompts for every task. We found that we can have one prompt for many tasks because it is not a prompt that teaches LLMs to solve one problem, but a prompt that teaches LLMs to solve many problems by writing a program,” says Luo.
“Having language models reason with code unlocks many opportunities for tool use, output validation, more structured understanding into model's capabilities and way of thinking, and more,” says Leonid Karlinsky, principal scientist at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab.
“No magic here”
NLEPs achieved greater than 90 percent accuracy when prompting GPT-4 to solve a range of symbolic reasoning tasks, like tracking shuffled objects or playing a game of 24, as well as instruction-following and text classification tasks. The researchers found that NLEPs even exhibited 30 percent greater accuracy than task-specific prompting methods. The method also showed improvements over open-source LLMs.
Along with boosting the accuracy of large language models, NLEPs could also improve data privacy. Since NLEP programs are run locally, sensitive user data do not need to be sent to a company like OpenAI or Google to be processed by a model.
In addition, NLEPs can enable small language models to perform better without the need to retrain a model for a certain task, which can be a costly process.
“There is no magic here. We do not have a more expensive or fancy language model. All we do is use program generation instead of natural language generation, and we can make it perform significantly better,” Luo says.
However, an NLEP relies on the program generation capability of the model, so the technique does not work as well for smaller models which have been trained on limited datasets. In the future, the researchers plan to study methods that could make smaller language models generate more effective NLEPs. In addition, they want to investigate the impact of prompt variations on NLEPs to enhance the robustness of the model’s reasoning processes.

Two years after Roe was struck down, the conversation has focused on the complications that can come with pregnancy and fertility, helping to drive more support for abortion rights.

In the decades that Roe v. Wade was the law of the land, abortion rights groups tried to shore up support for it by declaring “Abortion Is Health Care.”
Only now, two years after the Supreme Court eliminated the constitutional right to abortion, and just six months before the presidential election, has the slogan taken on the force of reality.
The public conversation about abortion has grown into one about the complexities of pregnancy and reproduction, as the consequences of bans have played out in the news. The question is no longer just whether you can get an abortion, but also, Can you get one if pregnancy complications put you in septic shock? Can you find an obstetrician when so many are leaving states with bans? If you miscarry, will the hospital send you home to bleed? Can you and your partner do in vitro fertilization?
That shift helps explain why a record percentage of Americans are now declaring themselves single-issue voters on abortion rights — especially among Black voters, Democrats, women and those ages 18 to 29 . Republican women are increasingly saying their party’s opposition to abortion is too extreme, and Democrats are running on the issue after years of running away from it.
“When the Dobbs case came down, I told my friends — somewhat but not entirely in jest — that America was about to be exposed to a lengthy seminar on obstetrics,” said Elaine Kamarck, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, referring to the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
Abortion opponents say that stories about women facing medical complications are overblown and that women who truly need abortions for medical reasons have been able to get them under exceptions to the bans.

These “Writing for an Academic Discussion” questions were added to the TOEFL iBT on July 26, 2023. They replaced the “Independent Writing Task.” Each link below includes a complete sample question and response. These questions are based on the information we have at this time. I will revise them as more information is provided. I also have a guide to answering this question .
Basically, test-takers see a question written by a professor and responses by two students. The test-taker should respond to the question and add to the conversation. They have ten minutes to read the question, read the responses and write their own responses.

Below is an official TOEFL Integrated Writing sample question and as well as an essay response that received a score of 5. It includes a written passage, the transcript of a conversation (which would be an audio recording on the actual TOEFL, and the essay prompt. After the prompt is an example of a top-scoring essay.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Writing an Introduction. The first part of your TOEFL independent essay is the introductory paragraph. You could follow this template: Sentence One: The "Background Information" This is an interesting sentence that introduces the general theme or topic of the essay.
Type 1: Agree or Disagree. This is the most common prompt type for the Independent Writing Task, and the sample question above is an example of it. For this type of prompt, you'll be presented with two sides of an argument. You'll need to pick one side and give specific reasons and examples that support your opinion.
