Proper Classroom Management is Essential for an Effective Elementary School Classroom
Kayla Cotter , Roger Williams University Follow
Document Type
I am an elementary education major and have a deep love for seeing children make connections, and learn about not only academics but moral values and life lessons. As much as I have learned in different classes over the past four years of my education, I have learned the most during my Practicum and Student Teaching experience as I really have gotten to run my own classroom. I believe that classroom management is the most important tool of strong learning. It provides the atmosphere students need to learn to their best ability. My thesis paper discusses why classroom management is essential to any effective classroom at an elementary school level. I will implement theories of some well-noted authors in the education field, along with sharing my personal experiences in my Practicum and Student Teaching journey. Explored are the reasons behind why a classroom should be managed well, safety issues, relationships, teacher reflection, and more.

The purpose of this thesis project is to investigate the different philosophies of classroom management. Classroom management is one foundation in the academic setting; it helps set the tone of the classroom. As a future elementary teacher, it is crucial that I understand the role of effectively managing a successful classroom. This thesis highlights classroom management in three main areas: planning, motivation, and discipline. It also supplies research from experts in the field of education. The research paper includes appendices designed for use in my own classroom. The project contains classroom policies and rules, letters to parents, a student of the week plan, a token economy system, and other items. Some of the documents in appendices appear twice because the provide examples of more than one topic. All components of the project are created for implementation in my future classroom.

This study was driven by the researcher’s interest in learning more about classroom management, and in particular, how experienced teachers thought about positive discipline as part of a management system. The researcher was a teaching intern in an elementary suburban school, where she interviewed 5 teachers and the building principal about classroom management and positive discipline. Interviews were transcribed, and patterns across responses were sought. Findings revealed common pieces of effective classroom management: 1) setting clear expectations and rules, 2) consistency in applying rules and expectations, and 3) having good parent communication. All teachers used tangible extrinsic rewards to motivate students, and saw this as positive discipline. The subjects’ responses are compared and contrasted to recent research on classroom management and positive discipline.
