The study identified the level of work values and job satisfaction of the seafarers and staff in J-Phil Marine Incorporated. Specifically, the study obtained the demographic profile variables of the respondents, outlined the benefits of work values and job satisfaction which improve seafarers/employees performance (Brennan, 2008) and determined how J-Phil Marine Incorporated can motivate its crew officers and ratings for enhanced involvement in the organization. The researcher employed single random sampling techniques in selecting 154 respondents while informants were selected purposively for data generated through questionnaire and interviews conducted. Results showed that the respondents of J-Phil Marine Inc. consider very important are the intellectual achievement, familial and inter-personal aspects, while subscales of work values important. Respondents are highly satisfied in their job. Age, length of service, monthly income and educational attainment are highly influence/related to the work values. Gender and civil status are both not influenced/related to the work values of the respondents. In job satisfaction, the age and length of service are influenced, while the rest of variables of the respondents are not influenced. Highly significant relationships on the work values and job satisfaction are from the familial, inter-personal, managerial, material, occupational, religious, organizational and variety of aspects while environmental and intellectual achievement are significant to them.

This study aimed to determine the extent of work values based on its importance and work performance between Maritime faculty members with above median and below median teaching performance rating in one Asian maritime academy. Descriptive type of research was utilized in the study. Results showed that Maritime faculty members generally have above average faculty performance rating and findings revealed that professional growth is the work related factor that maritime faculty members really valued most in working with higher education institution and job security as the least. The above median group has significantly higher value on personal gratification while below median group has significantly higher value on social environment. Knowing the output of their job in a day makes them outcome oriented individuals. Assessing their teaching strategies through self-observation and awareness on how they deliver instruction would provide them first-hand information on what areas of faculty performance they really need to enhance. Active involvement in research and community services of the college and institution would give them more rewards and recognition as they contribute to the achievement of the vision and mission of the university while they are fulfilling their personal mission and applying work values in maintaining professional integrity as seafarers and model teachers.

This paper aims to identify the ranking of importance of work values as perceived by marketing students, and to explore the underlying dimensions of work values in the Malaysian context. It also aims to determine whether there are differences of work values between marketing students in Malaysia and US. Previously validated Super's Work Values Inventory (SWVI) containing 15 dimensions was completed by business students undertaking Marketing and other majors in Malaysia and USA. Factor analysis is employed to examine the underlying structure of work values. The study confirms the two-factor structure (intrinsic and extrinsic) of work values and shows that marketing students value the work that allows them to fulfill their potential in terms of creativity (M = 4.23) and intellectual stimulation (M = 3.99) in Malaysia. Moreover, the results showed that significant differences in work values exist between Malaysia and US students with respect to economic return, way of life, altruism, prestige, management and variety. This article contributes to the worldwide knowledge on work values by highlighting the importance of understanding potential marketing professionals' work values in the two different countries. Respondents selected from two countries will limit the generalizability of the study.

Students with different performance levels have varying degrees of development needs in order to discover their full potential as future leaders and professional. This study aims to determine the comparison between Maritime Students with high and low academic performance in developing their confidence in terms of social and personal needs; and leadership capabilities in terms of cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. Maritime students have higher development needs in terms of cognitive leadership capability as well as confidence for personal and social development. The low performing students have significantly higher needs in terms of developing their confidence compared to high performing students as well as in cognitive leadership capability. Allowing the maritime students to participate in the international academic activities like attending research conferences would provide them the exposure and experience to meet and communicate with various professionals from different nationalities. Giving them the chance to actively participate in the community extension activities as support to classroom instruction that will also provide a better view of the society on how they will apply the knowledge and theories they learned from the University and contribute to the welfare of the community and as part of their personal and social development.

Volunteer in Marine Conservation

THESIS STUDENTS

For some components of our  projects , we seek program participants with academic backgrounds in marine and environmental science. Besides helping our research, we hope that by providing opportunities for early career scientists, we may help create the conservationists of tomorrow.

We seek dedicated people with a background in marine science (either current students or people looking for working experience after completing their studies).

We recognize that thesis students typically contribute much more than regular volunteers both to conservation and to our organisation, and that the work carried out has a desirous long term application. Since we don’t have external funding, we  do however need you to cover most of your costs. The heavily reduced participation fee reflect your contribution to us.

We will provide any letters, documents or other help needed if you are looking for grants or other funding. Keep in mind it often takes a while for requests by grants to get approved, so start looking long before you plan to join us.

  • Enrolled in a MSc or BSc program in (marine) biology, environmental sciences or similar;
  • Willing to carry out an independent research project at MCP;
  • Will design a research proposal back home;
  • A university tutor will help with writing a research proposal and final report;
  • The research proposal needs to be logistically compatible with our running programs. This is agreed upon by us before you come;
  • Inform us before you come what your university expects of us in terms of evaluation and tutoring;
  • Stay for a minimum of 16 weeks, so you have ample time to get to know the location, hone your research skills and gather your data;
  • Bring your own laptop for data entry. Any other research materials that aren’t available already need to be brought or bought by you from your own budget.
  • Collected data will be freely available for everybody. Your research report will be published on our website.
  • If you publish a scientific article, your MCP tutor will be listed as co-author. If MCP publishes an article, you will be co-author if part of the data is from your research.

What You Will Learn

You will improve your skills as a researcher. You will learn to be independent and self-reliant. It is a good step up if you would like to continue as a researcher after your studies. With your tutor back home you will design a good research proposal and you will carry it out while with us. This will improve your creativity both in designing feasible research proposals, managing changing circumstances and reporting it in a consistent manner.

If you have your own topic in mind, you can discuss it with us, and we’ll consider it carefully, if we think it is feasible with logistics, our location and facilities in mind.

What We Offer

  • Tutoring on site;
  • Feedback on your proposal, activities and methodology;
  • Usage of all the MCP facilities;
  • Training in methodology and species identification if required for your work;
  • 66% discount on the normal volunteer fee. You will pay only $150/week. This includes three daily meals; tea, coffee and water; various snacks; basic dorm accommodation; free scuba diving and use of dive gear; marine park fees.
  • Ability to join any  PADI dive course  you wish to. (to the extent it offered anyway, and if not detrimental to program needs or scheduling) You have to pay for the PADI certification and required manual(s). Kindly note divemaster training takes many weeks, and may not be compatible with a thesis-placement due to workload.
  • Assistance from program volunteers for data collection if needed and depending on availability, scheduling and program needs.
  • Possibility of presenting your research proposal and research findings to the staff and volunteers, and – if relevant, to the community as well.
  • An inspiring and fun working environment of local and international conservationists, volunteers and scientists.

If you a thinking about doing the divemaster course while writing your thesis with us, add at least four extra weeks to have enough time. The minimum duration is then 20 weeks.  During those four week, during your divemaster course, you will be paying the regular volunteer price.
