The storage facilities of agricultural projects are not fully used by Senegalese producers. To appraise the nonappropriation, we used a mixed approach. First, we interviewed fifteen (15) officials and eight (08) farmers' representatives. We identified five (05) clusters of factors: the low production, the project shortcomings, the unfavorable environment, the sociocultural realities and the storage facility construction. Secondly, we surveyed a sample of seventy five (75) farmers. We found that stores are mainly used for inputs (48%) and cereals (22.7%). Low usage over time (below 6 months for 81.4% of farmers) and space (below 1/3 of the facility for 60% of farmers) derived from the low agricultural production (36%) and cultural habits (28%). We recommend an integrated PASTE solutions (Partnership, Administrative, Socio-cultural, Technical and Economic) model to overcome the non-appropriation of the storage facilities.

The present research aims to make the typology of peasant systems of storage of agricultural products in the Department of Zou. The typology of peasant systems for the storage of agricultural products has been possible thanks to socio-anthropological surveys. AFC (Factorial Correspondence Analysis) and the Chi-square test (chi2) respectively made it possible to establish the factorial map of the storage structures in relation to the arron dissements and to search for a possible relationship between the variables and the factors using the Chi-square test (Chi2). From the results obtained, it can be seen that in the study area there are traditional, semi-modern and modern storage. The traditional one is governed by the use of Agogranaries (48.73% of users), Djago (6.8%), the use of the ceiling of houses (34.4%) and wool bags (69.6%). The use of cans (8.7%) and casks (8.2%) constitutes the bulk of semi-modern storage. Modern storage that is governed by the use of modern stores. Modern ...

New Advances in Postharvest Technology [Working Title]
Storage is a crucial link in the food supply chain. It helps to even-out fluctuations in food demand and supply. This ensures food availability during the lean periods. Despite the immense contribution of storage, a knowledge gap exists on the storage types used by smallholder maize farmers, how they are acquired, used, and their cost in Uganda. Storage affects the social and economic well-being of smallholder maize farmers. In this study, smallholder maize farmers in three districts of eastern Uganda (Iganga, Manafwa, and Katakwi) were interviewed during the maize storage season of 2014/2015. The aim was to: describe the different storage types; find out how they were acquired and used; the length of storage and the cost. The findings show that sacks were the most used storage type. Storage types were acquired through purchase; however, some were constructed by the smallholder maize farmers. Affordability and accessibility determined the storage type used. Some storage types were n...

This study examined the economic impact of grain storage structures and storage duration on the income of rural farmers in Kogi State, north-central, Nigeria. The study utilised the questionnaire method, supported by on-site observation and interactions with key players along the grain supply chain. Multistage sampling was used to select three hundred (300) rice and maize farmers spread across fifty (50) communities in the State that participated in the research. The results show that the storage systems and length of storage of the farm produce (maize and rice) has a significant impact on the annual income of the farmers, and only 1 per cent of the grain farmers' population earned above the 2017 world's poverty benchmark. We found out that access to technology for agricultural purposes was zero. The major challenges reported by the farmers are; poor processing/storage facilities (43.4 %), poor sales after harvest (30.3 %) and lack of agricultural credits (23.3 %). The existing storage structures encourages post-harvest waste and losses, affecting the quality of stored grains and invariably its market value and farmers' income; the grain market is erratic with middlemen dictating the price of grains. None of the farmers surveyed had accessed agricultural credit at any time. The study recommends shared or communal storage centres for each of the communities, where farmers can either have their grains sold at Guaranteed Minimum Price or with an option to store the grains in anticipation of better prices in the future. Bank Accounts would be opened for the farmers, and a Grain Card would be issued to help keep and build the farmers' "Activity Ratings" for economic purpose like credit assessment to determine eligibility for agricultural credit. Private firms should manage the shared or communal centre in each community in a public-private partnership with the government, but the farmers should be shareholders by default. The shared or communal centres should also be a reliable intermediary between the farmers and other key stakeholders, strengthening the rural economic institution, and serving as a training centre for the rural farmers. A theoretical shared or communal storage model was designed.

This study examines the economic feasibility of improved storages and the potential impacts of using them on household food security and income. Moreover, it tests whether storage losses can induce early sale of households maize produce. We used data from on-farm experiment, household survey, and secondary sources. We considered Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags, metallic silos, and polypropylene bags (control). Results show that PICS bags are profitable when the grain is sold during the lean season. However, the economic feasibility of metallic silos depends on the size of the storages and location i.e. silos of 1.5t and 2t storage capacities are feasible in some districts while lower size silos are not feasible in all locations. Storing maize using PICS bags will enhance household food security, especially among net-buyer farm households enabling them to reduce their annual grain deficit period by three to four weeks. Moreover, market-oriented storage using the improved sto...

The aim of this study is to identify the attributes of storage structures sought by maize producers based on a choice experiment. The experimental processes took place in the maize production areas of northern and central Benin. The sample consisted of 365 maize farmers (80.55% male and 19.45% female) randomly selected from 40 villages. Data were collected and analyzed using a latent class logit model to study the heterogeneous preferences of the key attributes of storage structures. The results show that men and women are eager to change their current practices and to adopt new storage technologies. The study identifies four potential producer segments, including three large-farmer segments that have access to credit and are particularly attracted to structures related to metal silos. Of those three segments, two are also attracted to improved traditional silos. Another segment of poor farmers, who do not have access to credit, prefer to have a very efficient structure (loss rate o...
