President Biden’s new immigration policy protects some 500,000 people who are married to U.S. citizens from deportation and gives them a pathway to citizenship.

The election-year move comes just two weeks after Mr. Biden imposed a major crackdown at the U.S.-Mexico border, cutting off access to asylum for people who crossed into the United States illegally.

The policy announced on Tuesday is aimed at people who have been living in the United States for more than a decade and have built their lives and families here.

Here is how it works:

Why do the spouses of American citizens need protection?

Marrying an American citizen generally provides a pathway to U.S. citizenship. But people who crossed the southern border illegally — rather than arriving in the country with a visa — must return to their home countries to complete the process for a green card, something that can take years. The new program allows families to remain in the country while they pursue legal status.

Who is eligible?

There are roughly 1.1 million undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens in the United States, according to Fwd.us , an immigration advocacy group, but not all of them are eligible for the program.

The spouses must have lived in the United States for 10 years and have been married to an American citizen as of June 17. They cannot have a criminal record. Officials estimate that the policy will provide legal status and protections for about 500,000 people. The benefits would also extend to the roughly 50,000 children of undocumented spouses who became stepchildren to American citizens.

When will the program take effect?

Biden administration officials said they expected the program to start by the end of the summer. Those eligible will then be able to apply for the benefits.

Why is President Biden doing this now?

Mr. Biden is trying to strike a tricky balance on immigration, which is a serious political vulnerability for him. Polls show Americans want tougher policies. Just two weeks ago, Mr. Biden announced a crackdown on asylum at the southern border.

His new policy, giving hundreds of thousands of immigrants new legal protections, is a way for him to answer the calls from the progressive base of the Democratic Party, which has accused the White House of betraying campaign promises to enact a more humane approach to immigrants.

High school president writes notes thanking fellow seniors — 180 of them

A high school class president in Massachusetts who gave a commencement speech wanted to recognize all of his fellow graduates. So he wrote them personal thank-you notes presented at the ceremony — 180 to be exact.

“I wish I could’ve acknowledged you all, but there was simply not enough time,” Mason Macuch of Lakeville said in his June 7 speech. “Instead, I want you to reach under your chairs, where you will find a personal note that I’ve written to each of you as a way to say one final goodbye and thank you for making these years that will soon pass the ‘good ole days.’”

The seniors at Apponequet Regional High School about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Boston found envelopes containing 5-by-7-inch (13-by-18-centimeter) white cards with their messages.

Macuch said it took him about 10 hours to write the cards. As class president, he said he knew most of the students.

“I just wrote anything from farewell messages to little memories that I had with whoever I was writing to, or maybe if it was a close friend, a longer message to them,” Macuch, 18, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “Anything that I could think of about the person I wanted to say about them before we graduated and went on our separate ways.”

Macuch had to clear the idea with school administrators first. He arrived an hour before the ceremony and got help from an assistant principal and a teacher taping the cards under the chairs.

It was a surprise to everyone, said his best friend, Conor Tripp, in an email.

“I do not consider myself an emotional person, but his speech and the gesture of writing each and every member a letter moved me so much and I was very emotional from that moment on,” Tripp said. “It was such a special way to acknowledge every member of the class and show a strong bond between the members of our class.”

Macuch said a lot of graduates thanked him in person afterward. Many parents sent him nice comments on social media.

“Some people I hadn’t talked to in a few years were just so thankful for them. It was really nice to see that they were just so appreciative of all the hard work that went into them, and it was a really nice way to say goodbye to everyone,” said Macuch, who is starting college in the fall and plans to study biochemistry.

He was trained well.

“My mom always pushes to write a thank-you note,” he said.

New RCS Board President, Betsy Duff

At the School’s Board of Trustees meeting on June 17, 2024, current member, Betsy Duff, was elected to become the next president of Radcliffe Creek School, taking over the reins from Robert Ditmars, who has served in the role since 2020.

Vice President Brennan Starkey PÊŒ10 reflected on Ditmars’ service as President of RCS, “Rob Ditmars worked tirelessly to help navigate Radcliffe Creek School through a very turbulent time marked by the Covid pandemic and a change in the head of school. His unflagging optimism, ability to cut to the heart of complex situations and sense of humor buoyed both the staff and the Board as we made difficult decision after difficult decision. He was the right person at the right time to lead the School.”

Duff joined the Radcliffe Creek School Board in 2021 and has served as its secretary, chair of the Committee on Trustees, a member of the Finance and Advancement Committees, and is currently chair of the Head of School Search Committee.

My children attend a private catholic high school. The president of the school always refers to himself & introduces himself as ‘President (name)’.    This just doesn’t feel proper to me. If I were in his role I would say ‘I am Andy Wilson, president of Regina High School’, instead of, ‘I am President Andy Wilson.’

I agree with you. Here is why:

—- #1) It’s a basic rule one never gives oneself a rank or honorific. Thus, one never says to another adult ‘Hello, I am Mr. (Surname)’ . So introducing yourself as “President Andy Wilson’ is odd.  Better would would be ‘I am (Full Name), president of …’ .

There are exceptions. When a physician entering an exam room, he/she will say ‘Hello, I am Dr. Smith.’   This is reassuring to the patient – sitting in a backless paper gown – to know it’s the physician entering. Teachers introduce themselves as ‘Hello I am Mr./Ms./Mrs. Smith’ t o their classes to indicate to the children (who are not their peers) how they prefer to be addressed. When it’s informative, it works.

However, ….

—- #2) President is rarely used as an honorific.

While we hear the President of the United States referred to in the press as President (Name) in the media … this is not a form of address. The POTUS is addressed as ‘Mr. President’.   The President’s name is not used in direct oral or written address. The President, if he were to introduce himself would do so like anyone else – as ‘(Full Name)’.

I’ve never encountered a corporate president who wanted to be addressed as   ‘President (Name)’ rather than ‘Mr./Dr./etc. (Name)’.

Presidents of universities are addressed in writing as ‘Dr. (Full Name)’ and identified after their name as ‘President of ABC University’. It’s possible someone would say orally (and informally) ‘the President will be here in five minutes’   or ‘President may I show you to your seat?’   But formally the university president is directly addressed as ‘Dr./Mr./Mrs./Ms. (Name)’ . This president would also introduce himself as ‘(Full Name)’.

#3) Headmaster is used as an honorific in oral conversation or in a salutation. Use this form:

—- #4) All this said, if he wants to be addressed as President Wilson … I would call him ‘President Wilson’ . It is his name and it is his right to be addressed as he wishes to be. But it’s odd.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about writing this kind of letter - from what to write to how to format it and where to send it.

Basics of Writing a Letter to the President

Let's start with the basics. If you haven't already, you need to consider your reasons for writing to the President. What do you intend on saying? Why not email the President? An email is a great way to keep legislators honest about campaign promises, thereby encouraging them to do what they said they would do. Plus, it leaves an electronic record that cannot be deleted, in case that is something you need.

You could elect to place a phone call to the White Office instead of writing to them. You should know that the President themself will not be answering the phone however; this is manned by professional White House operators. If you do want to call, use one of the following phone numbers:

You could choose to send a gift to the President. Note, however, that the White House is unable to accept any monetary gifts. They also ask that you consider making a donation to a charity instead of sending them a gift. If you really must, though, you're welcome to send them a gift.

You could also use a combination of two methods - i.e. write an email  and a letter. Or a letter, and a follow-up email a few months later.

Best Practices for Content

Now, moving on to the actual writing of your letter. There are certain practices you'll want to follow to ensure that your letter is read, taken seriously, and if you're lucky, answered. Read on to find out what those are.

Format Your Letter to the President 

The White House asks that you take the following precautions when writing your letter:

  • Use an 8 1/2 by 11-inch sheet of paper
  • Include your return address on the letter and the envelope
  • Ensure your letter is neat if hand-written

How to start your letter

The first thing you need to do is address your letter correctly, and appropriately. We suggest "Dear President [last name]" or "Dear [Mr./Mrs.] President".

Use formal language

If there ever was a time to make your writing formal, this is it. Writing your letter to the President in a formal manner will ensure you come across as respectful, but also that you'll be taken seriously. If you want your letter to eventually reach the President, and/or have an impact, using formal language will get you well on your way.

Write the correct address on the envelope

Addressing the letter to the correct address is pretty crucial. Here's what to write on the envelope:

Use a clear structure

You'll want to follow a structure when writing your letter to the President so that you get your point across efficiently. Don't go overboard

No matter what, the tone of your letter must remain gracious, even if you're writing to express your dissatisfaction. Diplomacy is key here, so make sure you're using respectful language.

Using respect and professionalism will help your letter have an impact. After all, you have a specific outcome in mind for your letter, right? You're hoping to get something out of it. The best way to make this happen is to be strategic around your choice of language and tone of voice.

Another important consideration is  when  to send your letter. If sending a letter of congratulations, we recommend sending this soon after the President takes office, as there is a significant delay in letters being read due to the screening process that is undertaken - for security purposes - before any letter is given to the President.

If it's a request for a pardon, it might be useful to know that pardons tend to be given towards the end of their time in office, so you'll do well addressing this letter to them, say, at the beginning of their final year.

If you're lobbying for change about a specific issue, then writing at a time when a scandal has recently broken out in another area might not be the best time, since that will be the current focus at the White House.

Start by brainstorming. Brainstorming what? Everything! In other words, everything we've presented in this article so far presents great brainstorming material.

It's a good idea to create a checklist during this process, adding ideas to it as you go. This will ensure you don't forget anything during the first draft process, and will also be useful during the editing process.

First draft

Write the first draft of your letter. The secret to first drafts is to write without holding back. In fact, in the writer's world, it's often said that you should write a "sh##ty first draft". You'll find you go places you didn't even know you would.

This is where you polish, edit, shift, replace words and move things around. The editing process is where you refine your letter, basically, and get it ready for sending. It's your opportunity to make sure you've included everything you wanted to include. Use the checklist you created during the brainstorming part of the process. Did you omit anything? If so, is there a reason you did? 

Don't sweat it if it's the case. Sometimes, as we're writing, we realize certain details aren't as important as we thought they were, or perhaps they need reframing.

Who Will Read It?

Your letter will be addressed to the President, but it might not be the President themselves who read it. This is worth bearing in mind.

Firstly, anything entering the White House must undergo rigorous security checks, as anyone might expect. Therefore, you should expect a considerable delay in anyone reading your letter at all. The larger your letter, the more security it will need to undergo. This is useful to know if you're sending a gift.

Secondly, your letter will initially be read by staff members of the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence. The staff body is composed of paid full-time members, as well as interns and volunteers. The good news is that such a large office means they can reply to many letters. Here, "many" is subjective, since they received thousands of letters every day, so they couldn't possibly respond to more than a small fraction of those.
