A biography is an account of someone’s life story that is written by an author who is not the subject of the nook. An autobiography, on the other hand, involves an individual narrating their own life experiences.

The differences between biographies and autobiographies relate most prominently to the authorhship:

  • Autobiography: When you read an autobiography, you’re getting the author’s own interpretation of their life.
  • Biography: When you read a biography, you experience the subject’s life through someone else’s lens (Schiffrin & Brockmeier, 2012).

Origins of Biographies

The concept of biography as a literary genre dates back to antiquity. Such works were primarily used to capture the lives of dignified individuals, mainly rulers and war heroes.

Suetonius’s Lives of the Caesars and Plutarch’s Parallel Lives are landmark examples from this ancient period (Sweet, 2010).

The popularity of biographical works only grew in the ensuing centuries, and they became a prominent part of many cultures’ literary traditions. 

Into the 18th century and during the Enlightenment, biographies began to present a more balanced portrayal of the subject. They would present both their strengths and flaws, providing a holistic perspective on the subject.

Dr. Samuel Johnson’s compilation of English poets biographies, Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1779-1781) ushered in a new era of biography writing by focusing on examining human nature (Ditchfield, 2018).

In the modern era, the genre has evolved and broadened, encompassing a diverse range of figures from all walks of life – there’s a biography in every niche imaginable, with each offering readers an in-depth exploration of their lives, their struggles, and their triumphs.

This demonstrates the enduring appeal of biographies and their value in providing snapshots of history through individual lenses.

2. Autobiography

An autobiography is a self-written record of someone’s own life. It is a personal narrative in which the author writes about their life from their own perspective.

Autobiographies are usually centered around the author’s personal experiences, including key milestones, challenges, and achievements (Eakin, 2015).

They’re also often a defense of the person’s perspective (especially in political autobiographies) or insight into their thought processes, which can make them very intimate.

Origins of Autobiographies

The term ‘autobiography’ was first used deprecatingly by William Taylor in 1797 in the English periodical The Monthly Review, when he suggested the word as a hybrid but condemned it as ‘pedantic’.

Pioneering examples of the genre form include Thomas De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821) and the memoirs by veterans of the Napoleonic Wars (Lejeune, 2016).

However, apart from these early instances, autobiographies have been composed by a wide array of individuals from history. 

In the early 20th century, the genre witnessed major transformations, and autobiographies started to cover a broader spectrum of experiences, including trauma, struggles, and successes.

‘Black Boy’ by Richard Wright, for instance, shares the author’s experiences with racism and his journey towards developing a literary career (Wright, 1945).

This was followed by a host of autobiographies by public figures sharing their diverse stories, such as Ernest Hemingway’s ‘A Moveable Feast’, depicting his days as a struggling young writer in Paris (Hemingway, 1964). 

Autobiography as a genre has continued to evolve over the years, and a variety of forms have emerged to communicate individual experiences globally.

As history has progressed, we see more and more people with diverse perspectives sharing their stories, broadening our understanding of the human experience (Smith & Watson, 2010).

Similarities and Differences Between Biographies and Autobiographies

While both biographies and autobiographies are excellent sources of information and entertainment about significant figures in history (or the present!), they serve different purposes. By knowing the different purposes of each, we can develop stronger media literacy , understanding what the intention of the author is, and how we should approach the text.

It gives an elaborate information regarding the birthplace, educational background, work, relationships and demise of the person concerned. It presents the subject’s intimate details about life, focusing on the highs and lows and analysing their whole personality.

A biography is usually in the written form but can also be made in other forms of a music composition or literature to film interpretation.

It is the recreation of the life of an individual composed of words by another person. The author collects every single detail about the subject and presents those facts in the biography, which are relevant and interesting, to engross the readers in the story.

Definition of Autobiography

An autobiography is the life sketch of a person written by that person himself or herself. The word auto means ‘self.’ Therefore, autobiography contains all the elements of a biography but composed or narrated by the author himself. He/She may write on their own or may hire ghostwriters to write for them.

An autobiography presents the narrator’s character sketch, the place where he is born and brought up, his education, work, life experiences, challenges, and achievements. This may include events and stories of his childhood, teenage, and adulthood.

  • In an Autobiography, the author uses the first narrative like I, me, we, he, she, etc. This, in turn, makes an intimate connection between the author and the reader since the reader experience various aspects as if he/she is in that time period. As opposed a biography is from a third person’s view and is much less intimate.
  • The purpose of writing a biography is to introduce and inform the readers about the person and his life whereas an autobiography is written in order to express, the life experiences and achievements of the narrator.

An  autobiography  (awe-tow-bye-AWE-gruh-fee) is a self-written  biography . The author writes about all or a portion of their own life to share their experience, frame it in a larger cultural or historical context, and/or inform and entertain the reader.

Autobiographies have been a popular literary genre for centuries. The first Western autobiography is attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo for his 13-book work titled  Confessions , written between 397 and 400 CE. Some autobiographies are a straightforward narrative that recollects a linear chain of events as they unfolded. The genre has expanded and evolved to include different approaches to the form.

The word  autobiography  comes from the Ancient Greek  auto  (“self”) +  bios  (“life”) +  graphein  (“to write”) = “a self-written life.” It is also known as autography .

The History of Autobiography

Scholars regard Augustine’s  Confessions  as the first Western autobiography. Other autobiographical works from antiquity include Jewish historian Flavius Josephus’s  Vita  (circa 99 CE) and Greek scholar Libanius’s  Oration I  (374 CE). Works of this kind were called apologias, which essentially means “in my defense.” Writers approached these works not as acts of self-documentation but as self-defense. They represented a way to explain and provide rationale for their life, work, and escapades. There was also less focus on their emotional lives.

The Book of Margery Kempe , written in 1438 by an English Christian mystic, is the earliest known autobiography in English. (Though it didn’t see full publication until the 20th century.) Other early English-language biographies of note include:

  • Lord Herbert of Cherbury’s 1764 memoirs
  • John Bunyan’s  Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners  in 1666
  • Jarena Lee’s  The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee  (the first autobiography of an African American woman)

Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s  Confessions was published in 1782. It paved the way for the more thoughtful, emotionally centered autobiographies seen today. Autobiography as a literary genre emerged a few years later, when British scholar William Taylor first used the term to describe a self-written biography. He did so disparagingly, suggesting the form was  pedantic . In 1809, English Romantic poet Robert Southey used the term more seriously to describe self-written biographies.

Starting in the 20th century, more young people started writing autobiographies. Perhaps the most famous example is Anne Frank’s  The Diary of a Young Girl , about her time hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic. The 21st century saw an increase in autobiographical essay collections and memoirs by younger celebrities, including:

Autobiographies are not immune to controversy. One notable scandal involved author James Frey’s  A Million Little Pieces . Originally billed as a memoir, evidence later emerged that Frey invented key parts of the story. This example underscores how easily authors can cross over into autofiction—fictional autobiography—and how seriously readers take authors’ responsibility to accurately and honestly market their books.

Types of Autobiographies

There are a few different types of self-written works that qualify as autobiography.

Standard Autobiographies

In the most traditional form, authors recount their life or specific formative events from their life. This approach often utilizes a chronological format of events, but it doesn’t necessarily have to. An author’s approach might include a framing device such as flashbacks, in which they move from the present to the past as they remember their lives. For example, Broadway star Patti LuPone’s self-titled autobiography begins on the opening night of  Gypsy  in 2004 before moving back in time to LuPone’s childhood. An author could take a more stream-of-consciousness style, in which one memory links to another by a common theme. Irish writer Seán O’Casey narrates his six-volume  Autobiographies  in this manner

This is a type of autobiography that is narrower in scope and focus. It places greater emphasis on particular memories, thoughts, and feelings. A standard autobiography can certainly cover some of this same ground—most do—but the memoir is more interested in individual events or defined portions of the author’s life and the emotions and lessons behind them.

Henry David Thoreau is a notable memoirist. In Walden , he reflects on his time spent living in solitude in the woods of Massachusetts and what he learned about life and nature throughout this experience. Another example is  The Year of Magical Thinking  by Joan Didion, which relates the death of her husband and its impact on her life and work. Another is  Wild  by Cheryl Strayed, wherein Strayed remembers her time hiking the Pacific Crest Trail during a period of great change in her life.

Autofiction

The fictionalized autobiography, or autofiction, is another type of autobiography. The author presents their story not as fact but as fiction. This method gives them considerable space to take creative license with events and characters, thereby blurring the lines between reality and fiction. The overall goal is less about the author wanting to obscure facts and make things up and more a matter of taking another tactic to delve into their experiences in service of self-discovery.  Taipei  by Tao Lin is a work of autofiction. The central character, Paul, mirrors Lin’s own life and experiences, from the literary world of New York City to his ancestral roots in Taiwan.

Spiritual Autobiographies

These autobiographies center on the author’s religious or spiritual awakening and the subsequent journey their faith has taken them on. Common elements include struggles and doubt, a life-altering conversion, periods of regression, and sharing the “message.” These all act as endorsements of the author’s faith. Augustine’s  Confessions , Paramahansa Yogananda’s  Autobiography of a Yogi , and Augusten Burroughs’s  Toil & Trouble: A Memoir  are all spiritual autobiographies.

Autobiography vs. Biography

Both autobiographies and  biographies  are records of real lives, but there is one major distinction. A person other than the book’s subject writes a biography, while the subject themselves writes an autobiography. In this way, an autobiography is essentially a biography of the self. The biographer’s job is typically more involved, entailing detailed research into the life of the subject. The autobiographer, however, is usually not burdened by this because they lived through the events they write about. They may need only to confirm dates and stories to accurately relate the pertinent details.

The Function of Autobiography

An autobiography allows the author to tell the true story of their own life. This is the reason why autobiographies have always been written by famous people. History tends to remember notable individuals for just one significant contribution or event and, even then, the public’s perception of it may be inaccurate. Writing an autobiography allows the author to share the real story and put it into the larger context of their life and times.

Most readers pick up an autobiography expecting some degree of subjectivity from the author. After all, the events chronicled happened to the author, so the writing will of course have a biased  perspective . There are advantages to this subjectivity, though. The reader gets the real story directly from the person who lived it, unvarnished by others’ opinions or erroneous historical data.

One way this subjectivity is problematic is that the author may not possess the ability to see the story they’re telling from other perspectives. For example, they may not acknowledge any hurt they caused others, dangerous behaviors they engaged in, or the “other side” of a controversial event in which there are equally valid opposing viewpoints and experiences. Any of these deficiencies can result in a somewhat skewed narrative.

1. Maya Angelou,  I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Angelou’s autobiography is the first installment in a seven-volume series chronicling the life of the legendary poet, teacher, actress, director, dancer, and civil rights activist. Given all those roles, it’s easy to see why Angelou’s life story makes for interesting reading.

This volume centers primarily on her early life in Stamps, Arkansas, and the devastating effects of a childhood rape. It also explores racism in the American South. It discuses the important role reading plays in helping young Maya deal with the sexual assault and pervasive prejudice in her environment.

2. Helen Keller,  The Story of My Life

Keller’s autobiography details her first 20 years, starting with the childhood illness that caused her blindness and deafness. She discusses the obstacles she had to overcome and the life-changing relationship she shared with her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who helped her learn to read and write. Keller also documents her friendships with several famous figures of her day, including Alexander Graham Bell, John Greenleaf Whittier, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and First Lady Frances Cleveland.

3. Vinh Chung,  Where the Wind Leads

Chung’s autobiography recalls the harrowing story of a Vietnamese refugee and his journey to make the American Dream his own. Born in South Vietnam, Chung comes of age in a changing political climate that eventually compels his family to flee the country. Their voyage takes them through the South China Sea, run-ins with pirates, resettlement in Arkansas, and Chung’s graduation from Harvard Medical School.

How to Write an Autobiography

Autobiography is a truly universal art form and is accessible to anyone, whether you're in high school or 100 years old. Exploring the process of writing an autobiography deserves an article in itself, but the process should include these steps:

  • Determine your "why." What lessons do you want to impart via your story, and why are they worth sharing with a broader audience?
  • Draft an autobiographical outline. It should include information about your upbringing, impactful moments throughout your life, stories of failure and success, and meaningful mentors.
  • Begin with the easiest sections. Getting started is often the greatest hurdle, so begin by writing the chapters that feel most accessible or enjoyable.
  • Write your first draft. Once you write the first chapters, it will feel easier to write the rest. Capitalize on your momentum and write a full draft.
  • Step away. As with anything, stepping away from your work will help foster fresh perspectives when you return.
  • Edit and re-write your draft. Your first draft will probably benefit from thorough revisions, as will your second draft, and maybe your third. Continue to edit and revise until it feels right.

Your life story, or autobiography , should contain the basic framework that any essay should have, with four basic elements. Begin with an introduction that includes a thesis statement , followed by a body containing at least several paragraphs , if not several chapters. To complete the autobiography, you'll need a strong conclusion , all the while crafting an interesting narrative with a theme.

When writing your autobiography, find out what makes your family or your experience unique and build a narrative around that. Doing some research and taking detailed notes can help you discover the essence of what your narrative should be and craft a story that others will want to read.

Research Your Background

Just like the biography of a famous person, your autobiography should include things like the time and place of your birth, an overview of your personality, your likes and dislikes, and the special events that shaped your life. Your first step is to gather background detail. Some things to consider:

  • What is interesting about the region where you were born?
  • How does your family history relate to the history of that region?
  • Did your family come to that region for a reason?

It might be tempting to start your story with "I was born in Dayton, Ohio...," but that is not really where your story begins. It's better to start with an experience. You may wish to start with something like why you were born where you were and how your family's experience led to your birth. If your narrative centers more around a pivotal moment in your life, give the reader a glimpse into that moment. Think about how your favorite movie or novel begins, and look for inspiration from other stories when thinking about how to start your own.

Think About Your Childhood

You may not have had the most interesting childhood in the world, but everyone has had a few memorable experiences. Highlight the best parts when you can. If you live in a big city, for instance, you should realize that many people who grew up in the country have never ridden a subway, walked to school, ridden in a taxi, or walked to a store a few blocks away.

On the other hand, if you grew up in the country you should consider that many people who grew up in the suburbs or inner city have never eaten food straight from a garden, camped in their backyards, fed chickens on a working farm, watched their parents canning food, or been to a county fair or a small-town festival.

Something about your childhood will always seem unique to others. You just have to step outside your life for a moment and address the readers as if they knew nothing about your region and culture. Pick moments that will best illustrate the goal of your narrative, and symbolism within your life.

Consider Your Culture

Your culture is your overall way of life , including the customs that come from your family's values and beliefs. Culture includes the holidays you observe, the customs you practice, the foods you eat, the clothes you wear, the games you play, the special phrases you use, the language you speak, and the rituals you practice.

As you write your autobiography, think about the ways that your family celebrated or observed certain days, events, and months, and tell your audience about special moments. Consider these questions:

  • What was the most special gift you ever received? What was the event or occasion surrounding that gift?
  • Is there a certain food that you identify with a certain day of the year?
  • Is there an outfit that you wear only during a special event?

Think honestly about your experiences, too. Don't just focus on the best parts of your memories; think about the details within those times. While Christmas morning may be a magical memory, you might also consider the scene around you. Include details like your mother making breakfast, your father spilling his coffee, someone upset over relatives coming into town, and other small details like that. Understanding the full experience of positives and negatives helps you paint a better picture for the reader and lead to a stronger and more interesting narrative. Learn to tie together all the interesting elements of your life story and craft them into an engaging essay.

Establish the Theme

Once you have taken a look at your own life from an outsider’s point of view, you will be able to select the most interesting elements from your notes to establish a theme. What was the most interesting thing you came up with in your research? Was it the history of your family and your region? Here is an example of how you can turn that into a theme:

"Today, the plains and low hills of southeastern Ohio make the perfect setting for large cracker box-shaped farmhouses surrounded by miles of corn rows. Many of the farming families in this region descended from the Irish settlers who came rolling in on covered wagons in the 1830s to find work building canals and railways. My ancestors were among those settlers."

A little bit of research can make your own personal story come to life as a part of history, and historical details can help a reader better understand your unique situation. In the body of your narrative, you can explain how your family’s favorite meals, holiday celebrations, and work habits relate to Ohio history.

One Day as a Theme

You also can take an ordinary day in your life and turn it into a theme. Think about the routines you followed as a child and as an adult. Even a mundane activity like household chores can be a source of inspiration.

For example, if you grew up on a farm, you know the difference between the smell of hay and wheat, and certainly that of pig manure and cow manure—because you had to shovel one or all of these at some point. City people probably don’t even know there is a difference. Describing the subtle differences of each and comparing the scents to other scents can help the reader imagine the situation more clearly.

If you grew up in the city, you how the personality of the city changes from day to night because you probably had to walk to most places. You know the electricity-charged atmosphere of the daylight hours when the streets bustle with people and the mystery of the night when the shops are closed and the streets are quiet.

Think about the smells and sounds you experienced as you went through an ordinary day and explain how that day relates to your life experience in your county or your city:

"Most people don’t think of spiders when they bite into a tomato, but I do. Growing up in southern Ohio, I spent many summer afternoons picking baskets of tomatoes that would be canned or frozen and preserved for cold winter’s dinners. I loved the results of my labors, but I’ll never forget the sight of the enormous, black and white, scary-looking spiders that lived in the plants and created zigzag designs on their webs. In fact, those spiders, with their artistic web creations, inspired my interest in bugs and shaped my career in science."

One Event as a Theme

Perhaps one event or one day of your life made such a big impact that it could be used as a theme. The end or beginning of the life of another can affect our thoughts and actions for a long time:

"I was 12 years old when my mother passed away. By the time I was 15, I had become an expert in dodging bill collectors, recycling hand-me-down jeans, and stretching a single meal’s worth of ground beef into two family dinners. Although I was a child when I lost my mother, I was never able to mourn or to let myself become too absorbed in thoughts of personal loss. The fortitude I developed at a young age was the driving force that would see me through many other challenges."

Writing the Essay

Whether you determine that your life story is best summed up by a single event, a single characteristic, or a single day, you can use that one element as a theme . You will define this theme in your  introductory paragraph .

Create an outline with several events or activities that relate back to your central theme and turn those into subtopics (body paragraphs) of your story. Finally, tie up all your experiences in a summary that restates and explains the overriding theme of your life.

Definition of Biography

A biography is the non- fiction , written history or account of a person’s life. Biographies are intended to give an objective portrayal of a person, written in the third person. Biographers collect information from the subject (if he/she is available), acquaintances of the subject, or in researching other sources such as reference material, experts, records, diaries, interviews, etc. Most biographers intend to present the life story of a person and establish the context of their story for the reader, whether in terms of history and/or the present day. In turn, the reader can be reasonably assured that the information presented about the biographical subject is as true and authentic as possible.

Biographies can be written about a person at any time, no matter if they are living or dead. However, there are limitations to biography as a literary device. Even if the subject is involved in the biographical process, the biographer is restricted in terms of access to the subject’s thoughts or feelings.

Biographical works typically include details of significant events that shape the life of the subject as well as information about their childhood, education, career, and relationships. Occasionally, a biography is made into another form of art such as a film or dramatic production. The musical production of “Hamilton” is an excellent example of a biographical work that has been turned into one of the most popular musical productions in Broadway history.

Common Examples of Biographical Subjects

Most people assume that the subject of a biography must be a person who is famous in some way. However, that’s not always the case. In general, biographical subjects tend to be interesting people who have pioneered something in their field of expertise or done something extraordinary for humanity. In addition, biographical subjects can be people who have experienced something unusual or heartbreaking, committed terrible acts, or who are especially gifted and/or talented.

As a literary device, biography is important because it allows readers to learn about someone’s story and history. This can be enlightening, inspiring, and meaningful in creating connections. Here are some common examples of biographical subjects:

Difference Between Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir

Biography, autobiography , and memoir are the three main forms used to tell the story of a person’s life. Though there are similarities between these forms, they have distinct differences in terms of the writing, style , and purpose.

A biography is an informational narrative and account of the life history of an individual person, written by someone who is not the subject of the biography. An autobiography is the story of an individual’s life, written by that individual. In general, an autobiography is presented chronologically with a focus on key events in the person’s life. Since the writer is the subject of an autobiography, it’s written in the first person and considered more subjective than objective, like a biography. In addition, autobiographies are often written late in the person’s life to present their life experiences, challenges, achievements, viewpoints, etc., across time.

Memoir refers to a written collection of a person’s significant memories, written by that person. Memoir doesn’t generally include biographical information or chronological events unless it’s relevant to the story being presented. The purpose of memoir is reflection and an intention to share a meaningful story as a means of creating an emotional connection with the reader. Memoirs are often presented in a narrative style that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Examples of Biography in Literature

An important subset of biography is literary biography. A literary biography applies biographical study and form to the lives of artists and writers. This poses some complications for writers of literary biographies in that they must balance the representation of the biographical subject, the artist or writer, as well as aspects of the subject’s literary works. This balance can be difficult to achieve in terms of judicious interpretation of biographical elements within an author’s literary work and consideration of the separate spheres of the artist and their art.

Literary biographies of artists and writers are among some of the most interesting biographical works. These biographies can also be very influential for readers, not only in terms of understanding the artist or writer’s personal story but the context of their work or literature as well. Here are some examples of well-known literary biographies:

Example 1:  Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay  (Nancy Milford)

One of the first things Vincent explained to Norma was that there was a certain freedom of language in the Village that mustn’t shock her. It wasn’t vulgar. ‘So we sat darning socks on Waverly Place and practiced the use of profanity as we stitched. Needle in, . Needle out, piss. Needle in, . Needle out, c. Until we were easy with the words.’

This passage reflects the way in which Milford is able to characterize St. Vincent Millay as a person interacting with her sister. Even avid readers of a writer’s work are often unaware of the artist’s private and personal natures, separate from their literature and art. Milford reflects the balance required on the part of a literary biographer of telling the writer’s life story without undermining or interfering with the meaning and understanding of the literature produced by the writer. Though biographical information can provide some influence and context for a writer’s literary subjects, style, and choices , there is a distinction between the fictional world created by a writer and the writer’s “real” world. However, a literary biographer can illuminate the writer’s story so that the reader of both the biography and the biographical subject’s literature finds greater meaning and significance.

Example 2:  The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens  (Claire Tomalin)

The season of domestic goodwill and festivity must have posed a problem to all good Victorian family men with more than one family to take care of, particularly when there were two lots of children to receive the demonstrations of paternal love.

Tomalin’s literary biography of Charles Dickens reveals the writer’s extramarital relationship with a woman named Nelly Ternan. Tomalin presents the complications that resulted for Dickens from this relationship in terms of his personal and family life as well as his professional writing and literary work. Revealing information such as an extramarital relationship can influence the way a reader may feel about the subject as a person, and in the case of literary biography it can influence the way readers feel about the subject’s literature as well. Artists and writers who are beloved , such as Charles Dickens, are often idealized by their devoted readers and society itself. However, as Tomalin’s biography of Dickens indicates, artists and writers are complicated and as subject to human failings as anyone else.

Example 3:  Virginia Woolf  (Hermione Lee)

‘A self that goes on changing is a self that goes on living’: so too with the biography of that self. And just as lives don’t stay still, so life-writing can’t be fixed and finalised. Our ideas are shifting about what can be said, our knowledge of human character is changing. The biographer has to pioneer, going ‘ahead of the rest of us, like the miner’s canary, testing the atmosphere , detecting falsity, unreality, and the presence of obsolete conventions’. So, ‘There are some stories which have to be retold by each generation’. She is talking about the story of Shelley, but she could be talking about her own life-story.

In this passage, Lee is able to demonstrate what her biographical subject, Virginia Woolf, felt about biography and a person telling their own or another person’s story. Literary biographies of well-known writers can be especially difficult to navigate in that both the author and biographical subject are writers, but completely separate and different people. As referenced in this passage by Lee, Woolf was aware of the subtleties and fluidity present in a person’s life which can be difficult to judiciously and effectively relay to a reader on the part of a biographer. In addition, Woolf offers insight into the fact that biographers must make choices in terms of what information is presented to the reader and the context in which it is offered, making them a “miner’s canary” as to how history will view and remember the biographical subject.

A biography, also called a bio, is a non-fiction piece of work giving an objective account of a person’s life. The main difference between a biography vs. an autobiography is that the author of a biography is not the subject. A biography could be someone still living today, or it could be the subject of a person who lived years ago.

Biographies include details of key events that shaped the subject’s life, and information about their birthplace, education, work, and relationships. Biographers use a number of research sources, including interviews, letters, diaries, photographs, essays, reference books, and newspapers. While a biography is usually in the written form, it can be produced in other formats such as music composition or film.

If the target person of the biography is not alive, then the storytelling requires an immense amount of research. Interviews might be required to collect information from historical experts, people who knew the person (e.g., friends and family), or reading other older accounts from other people who wrote about the person in previous years. In biographies where the person is still alive, the writer can conduct several interviews with the target person to gain insight on their life.

The goal of a biography is to take the reader through the life story of the person, including their childhood into adolescence and teenage years, and then their early adult life into the rest of their years. The biography tells a story of how the person learned life’s lessons and the ways the person navigated the world. It should give the reader a clear picture of the person’s personality, traits, and their interaction in the world.

Biographies can also be focused on groups of people and not just one person. For example, a biography can be a historical account of a group of people from hundreds of years ago. This group could have the main person who was a part of the group, and the author writes about the group to tell a story of how they shaped the world.

Fictional biographies mix some true historical accounts with events to help improve the story. Think of fictional biographies as movies that display a warning that the story is made of real characters, but some events are fictional to add to the storyline and entertainment value. A lot of research still goes into a fictional biography, but the author has more room to create a storyline instead of sticking to factual events.

One of the main differences between an autobiography vs. a biography is that autobiographies tend to be more subjective. That’s because they are written by the subject, and present the facts based on their own memories of a specific situation, which can be biased. The story covers the author’s opinions on specific subjects and provides an account of their feelings as they navigate certain situations. These stories are also very personal because it’s a personal account of the author’s life rather than a biography where a third party writes about a specific person.

What is a Memoir?

Memoir comes from the French word  mémoire , meaning memory or reminiscence. Similar to an autobiography, a memoir is the story of a person’s life written by that person. These life stories are often from diary entries either from a first-person account or from a close family member or friend with access to personal diaries.

The difference between a memoir vs. an autobiography is that a memoir focuses on reflection and establishing an emotional connection, rather than simply presenting the facts about their life. The author uses their personal knowledge to tell an intimate and emotional story about the private or public happenings in their life. The author could be the person in the story, or it can be written by a close family member or friend who knew the subject person intimately. The topic is intentionally focused and does not include biographical or chronological aspects of the author’s life unless they are meaningful and relevant to the story.

Memoirs come in several types, all of which are written as an emotional account of the target person. They usually tell a story of a person who went through great struggles or faced challenges in a unique way. They can also cover confessionals where the memoir tells the story of the author’s account that contradicts another’s account.

This genre of writing is often stories covering famous people’s lives, such as celebrities. In many memoir projects, the celebrity or person of interest needs help with organization, writing the story, and fleshing out ideas from the person’s diaries. It might take several interviews before the story can be fully outlined and written, so it’s not uncommon for a memoir project to last several months.

Memoirs do not usually require as much research as biographies and autobiographies, because you have the personal accounts in diary entries and documents with the person’s thoughts. It might require several interviews, however, before the diary entries can be organized to give an accurate account on the person’s thoughts and emotions. The story does not necessarily need to be in chronological order compared to an autobiography, but it might be to tell a better story.

Bill Walton, a Hall of Fame center who authored a career that was triumphant and tragic, as well as colorful and controversial, died Monday at the age of 71.

Walton was regarded as one of the most dominant and versatile centers to ever play, which translated to two state titles with Helix High in La Mesa, Calif., two NCAA titles at UCLA and two  NBA  titles, one with the  Portland Trail Blazers  in 1977 and one with the  Boston Celtics  in 1986. In 1993, he was elected into the Naismith Hall of Fame, and in 1997, the NBA named him one of the Top 50 players of all-time.

“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans. But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events – always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.

“As a cherished member of the NBA family for 50 years, Bill will be deeply missed by all those who came to know and love him. My heartfelt condolences to Bill’s wife, Lori; his sons, Adam, Nate, Luke and Chris; and his many friends and colleagues.”

When Walton flew into Portland, Oregon, in October 2009, he was surprised to find tears streaming down his cheeks.

As the legendary center looked out the window of the plane, he was flooded with memories. He had returned to Portland many times since he left in 1979, the result of a hastily requested trade. But for some reason, this time, at age 56, he was overcome with emotions. There was the satisfaction and appreciation of a team coming together to win the 1977 NBA title. The agony of multiple surgeries on his feet and ankles. The anger and confusion of how his medical care was handled. And the regret of how he handled it all.

The next day, before a Trail Blazers home game, Walton explained his emotions to a group of reporters.

“I’m here to try and make amends for the mistakes and errors of the past,” Walton said. “I regret that I wasn’t a better person. A better player. I regret that I got hurt. I regret the circumstances in which I left the Portland Trail Blazers’ family. I just wish I could do a lot of things over, but I can’t. So I’m here to apologize, to try and make amends, and to try and start over and make it better.”

Ironically, Walton was in Portland to be feted. Oregon governor Ted Kulongoski was honoring him with the Governor’s Gold award, given annually to four people or organizations who have made great contributions to the state. And the Trail Blazers had invited him to headline a fundraising event. But as the governor and the franchise prepared to celebrate one of its greatest athletes, Walton was revealing the complexity behind his legacy.

Ten years later, on another return to Portland, he looked back on that 2009 flight into Portland.

“It was very sad,” Walton told  The Athletic . “I always try to self-reflect, and when you are living a life that is on stage, on camera, out in front, the minute it gets quiet, that’s when the true answers come to you … when it’s too late.”

Walton’s greatness on the court was unquestioned. In high school, Walton’s teams won their final 49 games. At UCLA, he was the  NCAA ’s player of the year for three consecutive seasons (1972-74), a span that included a string of 88 consecutive victories. In the NBA, he won the 1978 Most Valuable Player award with the Trail Blazers and the 1986 Sixth Man of the Year award with the Celtics.

But behind many of his triumphs was the tragic disappointment of injuries. Walton had 39 surgeries during his playing career, mostly on his feet and ankles, which caused him to miss 762 games over 13 seasons. Three times he missed an entire season because of injury. In his autobiography, Walton wrote that his biggest regret was playing hurt.

“I didn’t let pain be my guide,” Walton wrote. “I didn’t say, ‘If it hurt a lot, don’t play.’”

He said he suffered a knee injury on the playground as a youth and was never the same.

“My legs were pretty much shot by the time I got to the NBA in 1974,” Walton wrote. “I peaked when I was 12.”

When healthy, few were more versatile or more dominant. He was a brilliant passing big man, both in the half court and by initiating the fast break after a rebound with an outlet pass. He was 6-foot-11 and long, which helped him become an effective shot blocker. Those who played with Walton called him the ultimate teammate, who helped elevate their game. Still, never was Walton more ready to step to the forefront than in big games.

In the 1973 NCAA title game against Memphis State, Walton had 44 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks while making 21 of 22 shots in UCLA’s 87-66 win. Walton made four other shots that were disqualified and ruled offensive goaltending because of a then-NCAA rule prohibiting dunking. The previous season, in 1972, Walton had 33 points in the national semifinal, then led all scorers with 24 points in the title game, helping UCLA beat Florida State 81-76, which earned him the first of his two Most Outstanding Player awards.

In Game 6 of the 1977 NBA Finals, Walton had 20 points against  Philadelphia , plus 23 rebounds, seven assists and eight blocks as Portland clinched the series and won its only NBA title. Walton in the series averaged 18.5 points, 19 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.7 blocks and was named Finals MVP.

His most gratifying moment, Walton said, came at the end of his career, after he was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Boston Celtics. Accepting a reserve role backing up Robert Parrish, Walton played in 80 of the 82 regular season games and 16 of the Celtics’ 18 playoff games. Averaging 7.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19 minutes, Walton beat out  Milwaukee ’s Ricky Pierce and  Sacramento ’s Eddie Johnson for the Sixth Man of the Year award, and helped Larry Bird and Kevin McHale win another title. Walton called it “my greatest personal playing accomplishment.”

“I never had a better time playing,” Walton wrote in his biography. “Aside from winning, my favorite moments on the court came when I was out there with Larry Bird. It’s safe to say our styles were complementary.”

In a four-part documentary on Walton called “The Luckiest Man on Earth,” producer Steve James interviewed Bird about playing alongside Walton. Bird told James that Walton was as good as anybody when healthy.

“When Larry Bird said that, I mean, Larry Bird is not a guy who just throws around compliments,” James told  The Athletic . “When he said he was one of the best ever, I said: Centers?

“And he said, no. Players.”

The next season would be Walton’s last, limited to 10 games because of injury.

“When he was right, I think he was the best center playing the game,” said Dave Twardzik, a guard on Portland’s title team.

In the turbulent 1970s, with the Vietnam War raging and Watergate eroding the confidence in the United States government, Walton became more than just a basketball player. He became a voice in the counter-culture movement.

He was arrested in May 1972 on the UCLA campus for protesting the escalation of the Vietnam war, and a picture capturing Walton sitting down on Wilshire Ave. with arms peacefully raised before his arrest, was circulated widely in newspapers and magazines.

Walton told author Tom Shanahan that he believed in peaceful protests then, and always.

“Protesting is what gets things done,” Walton said. “The drive for positive change requires action. The forces of evil don’t just change their ways.”

And in 1975, a week after his second season with the Trail Blazers, Walton took part in a San Francisco news conference defending friends Jack and Micki Scott, who at times lived with Walton in Portland. The Federal Bureau of Investigation were pursuing the Scotts for harboring members of the Symbioses Liberation Army, who had kidnapped Patty Hearst, and the Scotts disavowed any wrongdoing. Walton asked the world to “stand with us in the rejection of the United States government” while also calling the FBI “the enemy.”

The Trail Blazers were outraged by Walton’s comments, and owner Herman Sarkowsky, team president Larry Weinberg, and executive vice president Harry Glickman issued a statement.

“The Portland Trail Blazers deplore Bill Walton’s statement calling for the rejection of the United States Government. The United States is the freest and most democratic nation in the world. We and the people throughout the world recognize this,” the Blazers said in their statement. “The American system, despite its imperfections, has been and continues to be the have which oppressed people throughout the world yearn to reach. We believe the National Basketball Association is an example of the opportunities available to people under the system of government, and Walton, more than most, has reaped extraordinary benefits from this system.”

At the time, it was not unusual for an athlete to speak out on political or social issues. Arthur Ashe, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali … they all took stands and were unafraid to voice their opinions. They all were Black. Walton was White.

“He was arguably the most outspoken White superstar, certainly in college, of that time,” James said. “To this day, there aren’t many White players of stature who speak out with regularity about capitalism … politics … whatever. Bill was a real outlier, in part because he was White, and in part because athletes at that time were trying to toe the line. They were viewed as culturally conservative.”

Years later, Walton argued against the notion that athletes should focus on their sports and not voice their opinions.

“Sports encompasses all aspects of life,” Walton told Hal Bock of the Associated Press in 1991. “It’s unfortunate when people use the argument that it is not a platform for politics … I believe you can’t stop and put sports in a vacuum. Just because people are involved in a special thing like sports, that doesn’t prevent them from taking a position.”

For the younger generation, Walton may only be known for his second career: broadcasting, where he was an over-the-top, and at times zany, color commentator for college and NBA games.

The irony was Walton grew up with a stutter, and struggled with interviews in college and the NBA. When Walton was 28, he said he met  New York Knicks  broadcaster Marty Glickman, who gave him a series of tips on how to correct his stutter, which included slowing your thoughts down, reading out loud and chewing sugarless gum to strengthen jaw muscles. He also told Walton to identify the sounds that gave him trouble — for Walton it was words with D, H, S, Th and W — and find books or articles with those words and practice.

Walton, who would later become a paid public speaker, often cited in his presentation that learning to speak was “my greatest accomplishment  … and your worst nightmare.”

In 1990, Prime Ticket Network hired Walton as an analyst. Soon, he was everywhere. He had stints with NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, Turner Sports and most recently was providing color commentary for ESPN broadcasts of Pac-12 basketball. In 2001, he received an Emmy for best live sports television broadcast. No matter the network, or the stage, Walton was always spouting outrageous, off-the-wall commentary.

Awful Announcing made a list of Walton’s most outlandish broadcast moments. A sampling:

“Yesterday, we celebrated Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity. Today, Fabricio Roberto is defying it.”

“If you ever think you’re too small to make a difference, you’ve never spent a night in bed with a mosquito, or you’ve never played basketball against Taylor from Utah — No. 11 in your program, No. 1 in your heart.”

“John Stockton is one of the true marvels, not just of basketball, or in America, but in the history of Western Civilization!”

“Tonight’s start was electric. Just both teams riding quasars all the way to the top of the mountain to the promised land!”

When Walton was descending upon Portland on that October day in 2009, there was another factor that led to his emotional state: He was a reborn man.

During 2007 and 2008, Walton was absent from the airwaves. No television. No radio. No appearances. He was on his back, in misery, and contemplating suicide.

“I had been in the hospital, on my death bed, wanting to kill myself. For years,” Walton said in 2009. “I was in a terrible spot.”

In February 2009 he had a spinal fusion, and it not only eased his pain, but also gave him a fresh outlook. It’s why he was so eager to repair his relationship with the Trail Blazers, and why he once again became an avid bike rider, and once again started attending what he called “church” — concerts of the Grateful Dead, of which he has attended more than 1,000 shows.

He was happy, with a feeling of accomplishment, and he wanted to spread the word. He called himself the “luckiest man in the world” and he believed it.

“When you face death, it changes you,” Walton said. “And you are never the same again.”

Michael Richards Revisits "Kramer" and the Racist Rant That Roiled His Reputation

M ichael Richards, best known for his role as Kramer on the iconic TV show Seinfeld , hasn't been seen on television much since his 2006 racial-slur laden meltdown at a Hollywood comedy club.

He also hasn't spoken too much about the event since a widely panned apology on The Late Show with David Letterman , an appearance he made three days after his rant, the day video emerged and made him one of the top stories nationwide.

While some point to Richards as an early example of cancel culture, he never claims to have been "canceled." He was still getting offers, a few of which he accepted. Most notably, in 2009 he reluctantly appeared on a Seinfeld reunion of sorts in episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm , the HBO show created by Larry David, the co-creator of Seinfeld . Richards says it was his choice to largely shut down his career as an actor-comedian.

In his new autobiography, dubbed "Entrances and Exits," set for release on June 4, he finally lays bare the incident — while also offering plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes for Seinfeld aficionados to pore over.

Life after Kramer

Richards writes that he's always had a problem controlling his "rage" and that the genesis of his Laugh Factory rant might have been the failure of The Michael Richards Show , which was canceled after just two months in 2000.

Fast-forward six years, and he's in a parking lot when someone shouts to him, "Do you know who you are?" He figures it's a "kooky fan," though, in fact, it's George Carlin, and the legendary comedian invites him to see him perform at the Universal Amphitheater and the Comedy & Magic Club.

Richards hadn't done standup in 18 years, though watching Carlin on stage gives him the urge to have at it again, he writes. Soon, the then 57-year-old actor is doing two shows a week at The Comedy & Magic Club and he branches out to the Improv, The Comedy Store and The Laugh Factory.

Before his now-infamous set on November 17, 2006 at the Laugh Factory, he appears on a talk show hosted by a producer of the failed Michael Richards Show . It's awkward, but a chance to "button things up." Then he's stuck in traffic on his way to the Comedy Store and, after that, The Laugh Factory.

His set is 25 minutes late and he's informed the audience is "edgy, all drunk." It's a surprise appearance and the audience goes wild when they see "Kramer" on stage. He plays a physical bit — impersonating a dog on a leash — but can't hear laughter, only talking and commotion from the balcony.

He shouts, "Shut the f--- up!" and gets a laugh. He figures it's time to "go wild" and "be naughty," which is what standup comedy is all about, he writes. But the room goes quiet when someone in the balcony yells, "You're not funny."

It's his biggest fear — not being funny — and they are fighting words for a comic. He angrily hurls the N-word repeatedly toward the balcony. "He went low, and I went even lower ... shocked at my foul language and anger, I drop the mic and leave the stage," he writes.

After his set, he tries to find the man who called him unfunny and "make peace" with him, but his group had already been given a refund and left the club. In retrospect, he should have yelled back at the guy, "Okay, I'm not very funny tonight. Is there anything I can do? Wash your car, mow your lawn?" But he didn't think of that at the time.

Fallout from Richards' set

The Laugh Factory founder Jamie Masada tried consoling him with stories of other comedians who had a bad night, like when Sam Kinison fought with a man who was angry about Kinison mocking Jesus; or when Carlin threw a chair at someone who interrupted his act.

Richards reminds himself to never blame the audience for a bad show and resolves to power through the dark times, thus he's back on stage the following night. After his set, a reporter asks him how he plans to "make amends for my racism once the footage from my act is shown to the country."

He writes that no recording of shows is allowed — it's right there on the tickets – thus wonders how a woman has video and is backstage asking him about it.

"On Monday, I'm the biggest story on every news outlet in the country," he writes, and Larry King sends a handwritten letter to his home asking him to appear on CNN . Richards doesn't respond, but Jerry Seinfeld is scheduled on Letterman that night and asks Richards if he'll appear via satellite to apologize, and he agrees.

Stepping away from comedy

"I lost my temper onstage. I was at the comedy club trying to do my act, and I got heckled ... and went into a rage. Said some pretty nasty thing to some Afro Americans. A lot to trash talk," he tells Letterman that night.

When the audience chuckles nervously, Seinfeld admonishes them: "Stop laughing. It's not funny."

Richards ends his apology with, "I have to do personal work."

That work includes coming to grips with his childhood, born of a single mother who nearly aborted him before giving birth and allowing him to be adopted, only to change her mind two weeks later and reclaim him from his adoptive parents. And he still doesn't know who his father is.

He withdraws from the world and seeks help from a Jungian therapist and a Hindu monk, and he immerses himself in Vedanta philosophy and takes up photography.

He writes that celebrities he hasn't heard from in years reach out to console him, as do his Seinfeld costars: Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander.

He reveals in his book that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer six years ago and thought he'd die. A successful surgery saved his life.

And he writes that his "personal work" paid off, as he's now at peace; he no longer seeks the limelight, nor does he miss the limelight.

How Richards became "Kramer"

But all of this comes at the tail end of his upcoming book because, first, he regales the reader with the backstage fun and drama of Seinfeld .

It was in 1989 when Seinfeld and his pal, Larry David, were creating a show to be dubbed, The Seinfeld Chronicles and they needed someone to play Jerry's neighbor, named Kessler at the time. Richards was set for a bit on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson on a night when Jay Leno was subbing for Carson.

The skit had Richards playing a skinny, clumsy fitness guru to the stars, a character he called Dick Williams. Seinfeld, who wrote the forward to the book, writes that when he saw Richards on Leno, "I fell hopelessly, forever in love with him." The network required a multi-layered audition process but it was a charade, because "no one else stood a chance."

The Kessler character was based on a neighbor of Larry David, comic Kenny Kramer, and George Costanza, was based on David himself. That role went to Alexander, though others who were considered included Danny DeVito, Larry Miller, Nathan Lane and Steve Buscemi.

The pilot aired on July 5, 1989 and NBC approved four more episodes, but network suits wanted to replace both Richards and Alexander and add a girlfriend. They settled on keeping both actors and adding Elaine, an ex-girlfriend of Jerry's to be played by Louis-Dreyfus, and Kessler's name was changed to Kramer.

Behind the scenes on "Seinfeld"

Seinfeld writes that "no real-life rules would apply" to Kramer, a character he likened to Harpo Marx, Stan Laurel and Bugs Bunny. "Whatever's funny, that's what Kramer would be."

But Richards writes that he presumed he'd be gone after the initial four episodes, especially after NBC set up a promotional photo shoot with his three costars and did not include him.

He's also upset that his character doesn't appear at all in one of those four episodes, "The Chinese Restaurant," where Jerry, George and Elaine can't get a table. Later, when the show is a bonafide hit, George is left out of two episodes dubbed "The Pen" that take place at Jerry's parents' home in Florida, and Alexander threatens to quit over the snub.

"This business breeds both massive egos and incredible insecurity," writes Richards.

When the show adds a nemesis for Jerry, a neighbor named Newman, Seinfeld slumps to the floor laughing at Wayne Knight's portrayal of the mailman.

Richards writes that he didn't like an episode dubbed "The Bris" because the rabbi is "loud and mean and way over the top," and that among David's favorite episodes is "The Puffy Shirt." Among Richards' favorites is "The Jimmy," where Kramer is mistaken for someone with special needs.

For the episode "The Stand-In," Mickey, played by Danny Woodburn, flies into a rage when George calls him a midget instead of a little person. In reality, Woodburn tells Richards off-camera, "You can call me a f---ing martian. I don't give a doo-da."

The character Izzy Mendelbaum, an elderly fitness fanatic who takes offense when Jerry jokes about his advanced age, was supposed to be played by legendary comic Jerry Lewis, but the network balked at his $50,000 salary demand so the part went to Lloyd Bridges, according to Richards.

Ironically, the last episode before the show's finale in 1998, called "The Puerto Rican Day," has Kramer doing something so politically incorrect that it was "canceled" for a time—removed from the rotation of reruns. The scene that caused NBC to ban the episode, according to entertainment trade papers, has Kramer accidentally lighting a Puerto Rican flag on fire and stomping on it to put out the flames.

"It's an ultra-comedy of errors, certainly not real politics," Richards writes.

The episode has since been added back to the rotation, and can be seen both on broadcast TV and on Netflix .

Finding "Meaningful Purpose"

Richards also tells anecdotes away from the show, like when Bruce Willis tells him to "be careful" with a woman flirting with him, advice that proved prescient. And when Mel Gibson invites him to join a weekly card game at his home, he declines, writing that, "I can't sit around with Braveheart," given that Richards is typically shy and awkward around other celebrities.

There's even an OJ Simpson sighting in the book.

In 1995, Richards is with Ed Begley Jr. at a party hosted by Gaven de Becker, a well-known security expert for celebrities. Other guests include Peter Falk and Jeff Goldblum, and all are talking about the so-called "trial of the century" when prosecutors Marcia Clark and Chris Darden walk through the door.

"You've got Columbo, Dr. Ehrlich from St. Elsewhere , the scientist from Jurassic Park , and Kramer huddling with the legal team trying football great OJ Simpson for murder," writes Richards.

"It's surreal, especially when Peter says he has to go but steps back into the living room a moment later with just one more question, as he usually does through his character Columbo, another question that usually leads him to solve the case."

At the gathering, Clark and Darden express concern about their chances of convicting Simpson, who was found not guilty a few weeks after de Becker's party.

In the final chapter, it is 2022 and he's preparing to write his autobiography by doing something he has never done before: watching every episode of Seinfeld , and he's doing so with his son, Antonio. Richards is impressed with his co-stars and guest-stars and is recalling the hard work they all put into the show, and his son is laughing.

"I'm reliving Seinfeld through my son, grateful to have put my interest in acting to a meaningful purpose," he writes.

Who Were Marilyn Monroe's Most Famous Lovers? Revisiting Her Relationships and Rumored Affairs

From John F. Kennedy to Jerry Lewis, a look at Marilyn Monroe's great loves and alleged flings

Over the years, Marilyn Monroe 's love life has become as shrouded in mystery and legend as the circumstances of her death on Aug. 4, 1962.

Despite the constant whispers about the Blonde Bombshell’s alleged lovers, even Monroe understood her power to refuse to kiss and tell. Plus, as her good friend and photographer Sam Shaw — who himself was rumored to be her lover — once said: "If Marilyn slept with every guy that claims he was with her, she would have never had time to make any movies."

That said, let’s look back on the most famous men (and women) who have been lucky enough to be linked to Hollywood's greatest sex symbol.

Jim Dougherty

Monroe was 16 years old and still known as Norma Jeane Baker when she married Jim Dougherty, a classmate at Van Nuys High School, in 1942.

Their relationship began to disintegrate when Dougherty joined the Merchant Marines and she began modeling. They were divorced by 1946.

"If I hadn't gone into the Merchant Marines during World War II, she would still be Mrs. Dougherty today," he told PEOPLE in 1976.

Charlie Chaplin Jr.

Rumor has it that Monroe had an affair with the legendary Charlie Chaplin's son, Charlie Jr., in 1947. The relationship allegedly ended when Charlie caught Marilyn in his brother Sydney's bed.

Charlie referenced the affair in his autobiography, and Anthony Summers mentions the relationship in his book Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe .

The alleged romance was also explored in Blonde (2022), starring Ana de Armas in an Oscar -nominated role as Monroe, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name. Although unconfirmed, the film depicted Monroe in a three-way relationship with Charlie and Edward “Eddy” G. Robinson Jr.

Milton Berle

Milton Berle and Monroe first met on the set of Ladies of the Chorus in 1948. Although the comedian was officially dating film star Adele Jergens at the time, Berle claimed to have had a brief affair with the young actress.

Berle, the first superstar of the TV era (and, according to Truman Capote and showbiz lore, famously well-endowed), also starred with Monroe as himself in the aptly titled film Let's Make Love in 1960.

"Marilyn was on the climb in Hollywood, but there was nothing cheap about her," he wrote in his 1975 autobiography . "She wasn't one of the starlets around town that you put one meal into and threw into the sack. Maybe she didn't know exactly who she was, but she knew she was worth something. She had respect for herself. Marilyn was a lady."

Natasha Lytess

Monroe met Natasha Lytess, her beloved drama coach, when she signed a short contract with Columbia Pictures in 1948. The duo would become nearly inseparable on and off set over the next seven years, sparking rumors of a relationship.

The actress' dependence on Lytess grew so intense that she began refusing to film scenes without her coach nearby. The speculation continued when Monroe moved into Lytess' home to prepare for her role in Don't Bother to Knock (1952).

While the nature of their relationship remained a mystery, Lytess was openly hostile to Monroe's male suitors, especially Joe DiMaggio .

"She was a great teacher, but she got really jealous about the men I saw. She thought she was my husband!" Monroe once said of her teacher, with whom she eventually parted ways in 1956.

As for rumors of other lesbian affairs with Barbara Stanwyck and Marlene Dietrich, Monroe seemingly put the issue to rest in her autobiography, My Story , which was released in 1974. "A man who had kissed me once had said it was very possible I was a lesbian because I apparently had no response to males — meaning him," she wrote. "I didn't contradict him because I didn't know what I was. … Now, having fallen in love, I knew what I was. It wasn't a lesbian."

Elia Kazan , one of Hollywood's all-time great directors, admitted to having a brief affair with a young Monroe while he was married to playwright Molly Thacher.

Per The Hollywood Reporter , Kazan confessed in unearthed private letters to Thacher that he slept with the actress, writing, "I'm not sorry about it."

He added: "I'm not ashamed at all, not a damn bit, of having been attracted to her. She is nothing like what she appears to be now, or even appears to have turned into now. She was a little stray cat when I knew her."

Kazan was a close friend of Monroe's future husband, Arthur Miller , and also referred to DiMaggio in his letters to Thacher, saying the ballplayer beat up Monroe "several times."

The Kennedy brothers

Monroe's most infamous rumored affairs were with former President John F. Kennedy and later his brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy . Some have even suggested that her relationship with the two men played a role in her untimely death .

Rumors of an affair were spurred in part by her sultry "Happy Birthday" performance for the commander-in-chief at his 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962, just months before her death.

Monroe biographer James Spada told PEOPLE in 2012 that while he doesn't believe there's any proof that the Kennedys were responsible for Monroe's death, "it was pretty clear that Marilyn had had sexual relations with both Bobby and Jack."

In his 2023 biography, Jackie: Public, Private, Secret , J. Randy Taraborrelli revealed a surprising connection between Monroe and the former president’s wife, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis . As it turned out, both women shared the same therapist, Dr. Marianne Kris, whom Jackie began seeing for her PTSD following her husband’s assassination .

"When Jackie confronted her ," Taraborrelli wrote, "[Dr.] Kris said she felt no responsibility to inform her about any former patients in the same way she'd never reveal that she'd ever treated Jackie. Marianne asked, 'How is this relevant?' to which Jackie responded, 'How is that not relevant?' "

Joe DiMaggio

She was "like a good double-play combination," the baseball great DiMaggio told a friend after he and Monroe were introduced on a blind date in 1952.

Six months into retirement, he saw the then-26-year-old actress, in the words of the late prolific biographer Donald Spoto, as "a beautiful blonde showgirl who might double as a devoted mother and homemaker."

Monroe, who also longed for a home and children, was surprised by the famous ballplayer. "I expected a flashy New York sports type, and instead I met this reserved guy who didn't make a pass at me right away," she said of DiMaggio in Spoto’s 1993 biography of her . "He treated me like something special."

They married on Jan. 14, 1954, in a quiet ceremony at City Hall in his native San Francisco. But problems arose as DiMaggio, accustomed to being the biggest star in the room, became bothered by his wife's skyrocketing fame.

The couple divorced that October, nine months after their wedding. Monroe later said her now-infamous billowing skirt scene in The Seven-Year Itch (1955) was the final point of contention: "He said … exposing my legs and thighs, even my crotch — that was the last straw."

Yet they remained close friends, and for 20 years after Monroe's death , DiMaggio sent roses to her grave three times each week.

Marlon Brando

Perhaps the two most famous actors of their generation, Monroe and Marlon Brando were rumored to have briefly dated in 1955, after her divorce from DiMaggio and before her relationship with Miller.

Brando escorted Monroe to the premiere of The Rose Tattoo (pictured), and the two remained friendly until the end of her life.

Monroe would later say it was love at first sight when she met the author and playwright in 1950 on the set of As Young As You Feel (1951).

The duo did not reconnect until 1955 after she had divorced DiMaggio and moved from Hollywood, Calif., to New York City. They began secretly dating and were married in 1956.

"We're so congenial, this is the first time I've been really in love. Arthur is a serious man, but he has a wonderful sense of humor. We laugh and joke a lot. I'm mad about him," she’s quoted as saying of Miller in 1956 in Jane Russell’s 1989 book, Marilyn Monroe and the Camera .

At first, Monroe flourished away from Hollywood in her more normal life. She began cooking, cleaning and caring for Miller's children, who all loved spending time with her. But when Monroe returned to work on The Misfits (1961), written by Miller, their relationship began to crumble.

Monroe's drug addiction caused problems on set and at home, and shortly before the film's premiere, she and Miller divorced after five years of marriage. Just 19 months later, Monroe fatally overdosed .

Frank Sinatra

The Blonde Bombshell and Ol' Blue Eyes briefly dated after her divorce from Miller.

After her split from the playwright, Monroe stayed at Frank Sinatra ’s house for a time after moving back to Los Angeles. The romance cooled off by 1961 when the crooner proposed to Juliet Prowse, but the two remained friends until her death .

Jerry Lewis

Late comedian Jerry Lewis claimed to have had a secret love affair with Monroe during a candid 2011 GQ interview .

First, Lewis insisted that Monroe's affair with former President Kennedy never happened, saying, " I'm telling you what I know. Never! And the only reason I know is because I did. Okay?"

When the interviewer reacted with disbelief, Lewis assured the story was true, saying that Monroe used sex like he used humor: "She needed that contact to be sure it was real."

So what was the affair like?

"It was … long," he said. "I was crippled for a month." After another pause, he quipped, "And I thought Marlene Dietrich was great!"
