Understanding Assignments

What this handout is about.

The first step in any successful college writing venture is reading the assignment. While this sounds like a simple task, it can be a tough one. This handout will help you unravel your assignment and begin to craft an effective response. Much of the following advice will involve translating typical assignment terms and practices into meaningful clues to the type of writing your instructor expects. See our short video for more tips.

Basic beginnings

Regardless of the assignment, department, or instructor, adopting these two habits will serve you well :

  • Read the assignment carefully as soon as you receive it. Do not put this task off—reading the assignment at the beginning will save you time, stress, and problems later. An assignment can look pretty straightforward at first, particularly if the instructor has provided lots of information. That does not mean it will not take time and effort to complete; you may even have to learn a new skill to complete the assignment.
  • Ask the instructor about anything you do not understand. Do not hesitate to approach your instructor. Instructors would prefer to set you straight before you hand the paper in. That’s also when you will find their feedback most useful.

Assignment formats

Many assignments follow a basic format. Assignments often begin with an overview of the topic, include a central verb or verbs that describe the task, and offer some additional suggestions, questions, or prompts to get you started.

An Overview of Some Kind

The instructor might set the stage with some general discussion of the subject of the assignment, introduce the topic, or remind you of something pertinent that you have discussed in class. For example:

“Throughout history, gerbils have played a key role in politics,” or “In the last few weeks of class, we have focused on the evening wear of the housefly …”

The Task of the Assignment

Pay attention; this part tells you what to do when you write the paper. Look for the key verb or verbs in the sentence. Words like analyze, summarize, or compare direct you to think about your topic in a certain way. Also pay attention to words such as how, what, when, where, and why; these words guide your attention toward specific information. (See the section in this handout titled “Key Terms” for more information.)

“Analyze the effect that gerbils had on the Russian Revolution”, or “Suggest an interpretation of housefly undergarments that differs from Darwin’s.”

Additional Material to Think about

Here you will find some questions to use as springboards as you begin to think about the topic. Instructors usually include these questions as suggestions rather than requirements. Do not feel compelled to answer every question unless the instructor asks you to do so. Pay attention to the order of the questions. Sometimes they suggest the thinking process your instructor imagines you will need to follow to begin thinking about the topic.

“You may wish to consider the differing views held by Communist gerbils vs. Monarchist gerbils, or Can there be such a thing as ‘the housefly garment industry’ or is it just a home-based craft?”

These are the instructor’s comments about writing expectations:

“Be concise”, “Write effectively”, or “Argue furiously.”

Technical Details

These instructions usually indicate format rules or guidelines.

“Your paper must be typed in Palatino font on gray paper and must not exceed 600 pages. It is due on the anniversary of Mao Tse-tung’s death.”

The assignment’s parts may not appear in exactly this order, and each part may be very long or really short. Nonetheless, being aware of this standard pattern can help you understand what your instructor wants you to do.

Interpreting the assignment

Ask yourself a few basic questions as you read and jot down the answers on the assignment sheet:

Why did your instructor ask you to do this particular task?

Who is your audience.

  • What kind of evidence do you need to support your ideas?

What kind of writing style is acceptable?

  • What are the absolute rules of the paper?

Try to look at the question from the point of view of the instructor. Recognize that your instructor has a reason for giving you this assignment and for giving it to you at a particular point in the semester. In every assignment, the instructor has a challenge for you. This challenge could be anything from demonstrating an ability to think clearly to demonstrating an ability to use the library. See the assignment not as a vague suggestion of what to do but as an opportunity to show that you can handle the course material as directed. Paper assignments give you more than a topic to discuss—they ask you to do something with the topic. Keep reminding yourself of that. Be careful to avoid the other extreme as well: do not read more into the assignment than what is there.

Of course, your instructor has given you an assignment so that they will be able to assess your understanding of the course material and give you an appropriate grade. But there is more to it than that. Your instructor has tried to design a learning experience of some kind. Your instructor wants you to think about something in a particular way for a particular reason. If you read the course description at the beginning of your syllabus, review the assigned readings, and consider the assignment itself, you may begin to see the plan, purpose, or approach to the subject matter that your instructor has created for you. If you still aren’t sure of the assignment’s goals, try asking the instructor. For help with this, see our handout on getting feedback .

Given your instructor’s efforts, it helps to answer the question: What is my purpose in completing this assignment? Is it to gather research from a variety of outside sources and present a coherent picture? Is it to take material I have been learning in class and apply it to a new situation? Is it to prove a point one way or another? Key words from the assignment can help you figure this out. Look for key terms in the form of active verbs that tell you what to do.

Key Terms: Finding Those Active Verbs

Here are some common key words and definitions to help you think about assignment terms:

Information words Ask you to demonstrate what you know about the subject, such as who, what, when, where, how, and why.

  • define —give the subject’s meaning (according to someone or something). Sometimes you have to give more than one view on the subject’s meaning
  • describe —provide details about the subject by answering question words (such as who, what, when, where, how, and why); you might also give details related to the five senses (what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell)
  • explain —give reasons why or examples of how something happened
  • illustrate —give descriptive examples of the subject and show how each is connected with the subject
  • summarize —briefly list the important ideas you learned about the subject
  • trace —outline how something has changed or developed from an earlier time to its current form
  • research —gather material from outside sources about the subject, often with the implication or requirement that you will analyze what you have found

Relation words Ask you to demonstrate how things are connected.

  • compare —show how two or more things are similar (and, sometimes, different)
  • contrast —show how two or more things are dissimilar
  • apply—use details that you’ve been given to demonstrate how an idea, theory, or concept works in a particular situation
  • cause —show how one event or series of events made something else happen
  • relate —show or describe the connections between things

Interpretation words Ask you to defend ideas of your own about the subject. Do not see these words as requesting opinion alone (unless the assignment specifically says so), but as requiring opinion that is supported by concrete evidence. Remember examples, principles, definitions, or concepts from class or research and use them in your interpretation.

  • assess —summarize your opinion of the subject and measure it against something
  • prove, justify —give reasons or examples to demonstrate how or why something is the truth
  • evaluate, respond —state your opinion of the subject as good, bad, or some combination of the two, with examples and reasons
  • support —give reasons or evidence for something you believe (be sure to state clearly what it is that you believe)
  • synthesize —put two or more things together that have not been put together in class or in your readings before; do not just summarize one and then the other and say that they are similar or different—you must provide a reason for putting them together that runs all the way through the paper
  • analyze —determine how individual parts create or relate to the whole, figure out how something works, what it might mean, or why it is important
  • argue —take a side and defend it with evidence against the other side

More Clues to Your Purpose As you read the assignment, think about what the teacher does in class:

  • What kinds of textbooks or coursepack did your instructor choose for the course—ones that provide background information, explain theories or perspectives, or argue a point of view?
  • In lecture, does your instructor ask your opinion, try to prove their point of view, or use keywords that show up again in the assignment?
  • What kinds of assignments are typical in this discipline? Social science classes often expect more research. Humanities classes thrive on interpretation and analysis.
  • How do the assignments, readings, and lectures work together in the course? Instructors spend time designing courses, sometimes even arguing with their peers about the most effective course materials. Figuring out the overall design to the course will help you understand what each assignment is meant to achieve.

Now, what about your reader? Most undergraduates think of their audience as the instructor. True, your instructor is a good person to keep in mind as you write. But for the purposes of a good paper, think of your audience as someone like your roommate: smart enough to understand a clear, logical argument, but not someone who already knows exactly what is going on in your particular paper. Remember, even if the instructor knows everything there is to know about your paper topic, they still have to read your paper and assess your understanding. In other words, teach the material to your reader.

Aiming a paper at your audience happens in two ways: you make decisions about the tone and the level of information you want to convey.

  • Tone means the “voice” of your paper. Should you be chatty, formal, or objective? Usually you will find some happy medium—you do not want to alienate your reader by sounding condescending or superior, but you do not want to, um, like, totally wig on the man, you know? Eschew ostentatious erudition: some students think the way to sound academic is to use big words. Be careful—you can sound ridiculous, especially if you use the wrong big words.
  • The level of information you use depends on who you think your audience is. If you imagine your audience as your instructor and they already know everything you have to say, you may find yourself leaving out key information that can cause your argument to be unconvincing and illogical. But you do not have to explain every single word or issue. If you are telling your roommate what happened on your favorite science fiction TV show last night, you do not say, “First a dark-haired white man of average height, wearing a suit and carrying a flashlight, walked into the room. Then a purple alien with fifteen arms and at least three eyes turned around. Then the man smiled slightly. In the background, you could hear a clock ticking. The room was fairly dark and had at least two windows that I saw.” You also do not say, “This guy found some aliens. The end.” Find some balance of useful details that support your main point.

You’ll find a much more detailed discussion of these concepts in our handout on audience .

The Grim Truth

With a few exceptions (including some lab and ethnography reports), you are probably being asked to make an argument. You must convince your audience. It is easy to forget this aim when you are researching and writing; as you become involved in your subject matter, you may become enmeshed in the details and focus on learning or simply telling the information you have found. You need to do more than just repeat what you have read. Your writing should have a point, and you should be able to say it in a sentence. Sometimes instructors call this sentence a “thesis” or a “claim.”

So, if your instructor tells you to write about some aspect of oral hygiene, you do not want to just list: “First, you brush your teeth with a soft brush and some peanut butter. Then, you floss with unwaxed, bologna-flavored string. Finally, gargle with bourbon.” Instead, you could say, “Of all the oral cleaning methods, sandblasting removes the most plaque. Therefore it should be recommended by the American Dental Association.” Or, “From an aesthetic perspective, moldy teeth can be quite charming. However, their joys are short-lived.”

Convincing the reader of your argument is the goal of academic writing. It doesn’t have to say “argument” anywhere in the assignment for you to need one. Look at the assignment and think about what kind of argument you could make about it instead of just seeing it as a checklist of information you have to present. For help with understanding the role of argument in academic writing, see our handout on argument .

What kind of evidence do you need?

There are many kinds of evidence, and what type of evidence will work for your assignment can depend on several factors–the discipline, the parameters of the assignment, and your instructor’s preference. Should you use statistics? Historical examples? Do you need to conduct your own experiment? Can you rely on personal experience? See our handout on evidence for suggestions on how to use evidence appropriately.

Make sure you are clear about this part of the assignment, because your use of evidence will be crucial in writing a successful paper. You are not just learning how to argue; you are learning how to argue with specific types of materials and ideas. Ask your instructor what counts as acceptable evidence. You can also ask a librarian for help. No matter what kind of evidence you use, be sure to cite it correctly—see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial .

You cannot always tell from the assignment just what sort of writing style your instructor expects. The instructor may be really laid back in class but still expect you to sound formal in writing. Or the instructor may be fairly formal in class and ask you to write a reflection paper where you need to use “I” and speak from your own experience.

Try to avoid false associations of a particular field with a style (“art historians like wacky creativity,” or “political scientists are boring and just give facts”) and look instead to the types of readings you have been given in class. No one expects you to write like Plato—just use the readings as a guide for what is standard or preferable to your instructor. When in doubt, ask your instructor about the level of formality they expect.

No matter what field you are writing for or what facts you are including, if you do not write so that your reader can understand your main idea, you have wasted your time. So make clarity your main goal. For specific help with style, see our handout on style .

Technical details about the assignment

The technical information you are given in an assignment always seems like the easy part. This section can actually give you lots of little hints about approaching the task. Find out if elements such as page length and citation format (see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial ) are negotiable. Some professors do not have strong preferences as long as you are consistent and fully answer the assignment. Some professors are very specific and will deduct big points for deviations.

Usually, the page length tells you something important: The instructor thinks the size of the paper is appropriate to the assignment’s parameters. In plain English, your instructor is telling you how many pages it should take for you to answer the question as fully as you are expected to. So if an assignment is two pages long, you cannot pad your paper with examples or reword your main idea several times. Hit your one point early, defend it with the clearest example, and finish quickly. If an assignment is ten pages long, you can be more complex in your main points and examples—and if you can only produce five pages for that assignment, you need to see someone for help—as soon as possible.

Tricks that don’t work

Your instructors are not fooled when you:

  • spend more time on the cover page than the essay —graphics, cool binders, and cute titles are no replacement for a well-written paper.
  • use huge fonts, wide margins, or extra spacing to pad the page length —these tricks are immediately obvious to the eye. Most instructors use the same word processor you do. They know what’s possible. Such tactics are especially damning when the instructor has a stack of 60 papers to grade and yours is the only one that low-flying airplane pilots could read.
  • use a paper from another class that covered “sort of similar” material . Again, the instructor has a particular task for you to fulfill in the assignment that usually relates to course material and lectures. Your other paper may not cover this material, and turning in the same paper for more than one course may constitute an Honor Code violation . Ask the instructor—it can’t hurt.
  • get all wacky and “creative” before you answer the question . Showing that you are able to think beyond the boundaries of a simple assignment can be good, but you must do what the assignment calls for first. Again, check with your instructor. A humorous tone can be refreshing for someone grading a stack of papers, but it will not get you a good grade if you have not fulfilled the task.

Critical reading of assignments leads to skills in other types of reading and writing. If you get good at figuring out what the real goals of assignments are, you are going to be better at understanding the goals of all of your classes and fields of study.

My final exam is worth:

I want (at least) this in the class:

Enter Class Grades

Calculator Instructions

  • In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth and the grade that you would like to get in the class. For example, your final test might be worth 20% of your overall grade and you want to get at least a 93% in the class. You would enter these numbers into the form.
  • In the bottom half of the form, enter a description (optional) of the classwork, the grade received for that classwork, and the weight of the classwork. Most class grades are made up of several components such as homework assignments, tests, exams, quizzes, class participation, attendance, etc. For example, a class exam might be worth 10% of your grade and you received a 95% on the test. You would enter those values into the form.
  • If you need more than four rows, press the "Add Row" button to add an additional line. You can add as many rows as you need.
  • Once you have finished entering your grades, press the "Calculate" button and the grade you need on the final exam will be displayed.

Final Grade Formula

final grade = ((g wanted x w total ) - gw) / w final

w total = w 1 + w 2 + w 3 + ... + w final

w 1 = weight of assignment #1

w final = weight of final exam

gw = g 1 x w 1 + g 2 x w 2 + g 3 x w 3 + ...

g 1 = grade for assignment #1

g wanted = grade wanted in the class

Example Calculation

Let's say your class has the following grading plan.

Now let's assume you received the following grades on your classwork.

Finally, let's assume that you want to get a 90% in the class. To determine what you need to get on your final exam in order to get a 90% in the class, let's do some math using the formula above.

First add the weight of all the class assignments together including your final:

w total = 10% + 10% + 20% + 20% + 20% = 100%

Next, multiple the grade you received on each assignment by the weight of the assignment.

gw = (91% x 10%) + (85% x 10%) + (75% x 20%) + (95% x 20%) + (97% x 20%) = 7100%

Now, calculate what you need on the final exam:

final exam grade = ((90% x 100%) - 7100%) / 20% = 95%

This is how you manually calculate your final grade. Of course, you can make your life a little easier using the calculator above!

What if my class grade is based on points rather than percentages?

Let's assume you have the following class syllabus that is based on points.

Let's assume you received the following grades.

To enter these grades in the calculator above, you first need to calculate your grade percentage for each assignment using the following formula:

grade percentage = points earned / possible points x 100

So taking your mid-term test grade as an example, we get the following:

mid-term test = 190 points earned / 200 possible points x 100 = 95%

In the weight column of the calculator, you would enter the possible points for each assignment.

Assuming you wanted to get at least a 90% in the class and your final exam is worth 250 points (i.e.the weight), you would enter the following information into the calculator.

In this example, you would need to get a 93.6% on your final in order to get a 90% in the class.

Byron buxton could rejoin twins by the weekend; justin topa out for six weeks.

Byron Buxton , who ran the bases twice during the Twins ' road trip, took batting practice and chased fly balls before Tuesday's game at Target Field.

His next game, however, will be in St. Paul. Buxton is scheduled to play two games on a rehab assignment with the Class AAA Saints on Wednesday and Thursday, ruling him out from playing in the Twins' three-game series against the New York Yankees.

"We're just going to give him a few more days to settle into some high-speed activity and then I think we can activate him," manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Buxton, sidelined because of right knee inflammation, was eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Sunday. He's now lined up to join the Twins in Cleveland this weekend.

"With Byron's knee, we have to be a little bit cognizant of the fact that he hasn't really had a short IL stint with that," Twins head trainer Nick Paparesta said. "It's always been a long-term type of situation. For him to get out there and do those things, he just has to gain a little bit more of that confidence and trust in that thing, and I think that's kind of where we are now."

Runnin' Royce

Royce Lewis , out since Opening Day because of a partly torn quad in his right leg, is expected to take another step forward at the end of this week. He'll move from running in a straight line to doing change-of-direction drills.

"This is a big week for him in regards to volume," Paparesta said.

Sign up for our Twins Update newsletter

Lewis' return is not imminent, though he is taking ground balls and swinging in the batting cage. Once he's running well while changing directions, his next hurdle will be running the bases for several days before he's cleared to begin a rehab assignment.

"Similar to Nick Gordon last year, it'll be a little bit lengthier progression of the bases due to the length of time he's been down," Paparesta said. "Then we'll get him into some rehab games from that point forward. Once he gets onto the bases, we'll have a pretty good idea of when that rehab progression will start."

Topa out until July

Twins reliever Justin Topa made four appearances on a rehab assignment before he was shut down with more soreness in his knee. He was diagnosed with a 25% tear of his left patellar tendon and he will be shut down for six weeks.

It's a disappointing setback for Topa, who was walking around the clubhouse with crutches Tuesday with his left leg immobilized in a brace.

"To have this, what I thought was a small little thing, snowball into a bigger, longer rehab type thing, it's extremely frustrating," Topa said. "Especially coming over to a new organization."

Topa, likely out through mid-July, declined knee surgery to try to salvage his 2024 season. He underwent platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections after he received a second opinion from Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati.

"The injection was the best option to get back as fast as possible," said Topa, who had a 2.61 ERA over 69 innings for Seattle last year. "My goal from day one is to get this done and over with, pitch this year and make an impact this year. Unfortunately, there's a sense of, maybe, it was a waste of six weeks after the first go-round. This time we're on the right track."

When Topa, 33, initially felt knee pain in spring training, he said it was diagnosed as a "tendonitis type situation." He underwent a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging exam last week, receiving a second opinion when surgery was presented as an option.

"The goal here right now is to get it as best as possible, get into a spot that doesn't bother me throwing and circle back at the end of the season or maybe down the road" about surgery, Topa said.

* Twins reliever Brock Stewart underwent a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right shoulder joint Monday. He hoped to begin throwing last weekend, but "we have to get his arm strength where it needs to be," Paparesta said.

* Michael Helman hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning while Diego A. Castillo produced four hits and three runs in the St. Paul Saints' 13-7 victory over the first-place Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday at CHS Field.

Bobby Nightengale joined the Star Tribune in May, 2023, after covering the Reds for the Cincinnati Enquirer for five years. He's a graduate of Bradley University.

Hitler-themed class assignment raises red flags at metro Atlanta school

Hitler-themed assignment sparks controversy.

A Hitler-themed class assignment has caused some controversy at a metro Atlanta school. FOX 5 exclusively obtained the questions posed to 8th graders at the Mount Vernon School which asked them to rate some of Hitler's attributes.

ATLANTA - A Hitler-themed class assignment is causing controversy at a metro Atlanta school.

FOX 5 exclusively obtained the questions posed to 8th graders at the Mount Vernon School which asked them to rate some of Hitler’s attributes.

Some parents have expressed concern and outrage at that assignment and question if it is antisemitic in nature.

School officials told me this afternoon that when they learned how the assignment was written it was removed from the curriculum.

One question asked: "How would you rate Adolf Hitler as a ‘solution seeker’?"

Another question asked: "How would you rate Adolf Hitler as an ethical decision-maker?"

The Mount Vernon School

"It’s troubling," commented one student. Some students questioned the appropriateness of the assignment and if the question glorified the Nazi leader.

"Obviously, that looks horrible in the current context," said one student. "Knowing Mount Vernon, we do things a little odd around here. We try to think outside the box, but oftentimes that doesn’t work."

Several students told FOX 5 that the questions were not in their curriculum when they were in 8th grade. The Mount Vernon School says it wholeheartedly denounces antisemitism and gave Fox 5 a letter in response.

Letter from Kristy Lundstrom, head of The Mount Vernon School

"The intent of the assignment was an exploration of World War II designed to boost student knowledge of factual events and understand the manipulation of fear leveraged by Adolf Hitler in connection to the Treaty of Versailles," wrote a school official.

One student says he can see the school’s intended approach to critical thinking.

"I can definitely see why they’d be upset, but overall, I think it’s important to look at both sides of the coin in every situation and I think it’s important to be able to compare and contrast everything that’s happened in our world history, whether it’s been good or bad," said the student.

Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Draft picks 2024: Grades, fits and scouting reports

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2024 NFL Draft with seven picks over the three-day event, including four in the top 100.

The Steelers opened the draft by bolstering their offensive line with Washington ’s Troy Fautanu , who started at left tackle for the Huskies but is seen by some as having five-position flexibility. They continued the run up front by plugging a big hole at center with West Virginia’s Zach Frazier , who grew up in the Steelers’ backyard .

In Round 3, Pittsburgh addressed more needs, adding Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson — who will help replace traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson — and NC State linebacker Payton Wilson.

The Steelers went back to the offensive line in Round 4, grabbing South Dakota State interior lineman Mason McCormick.

Early in Round 6, Pittsburgh added depth along the defensive line with Iowa’s Logan Lee. With their final pick, also in the sixth round, the Steelers grabbed Texas’ Ryan Watts III, who played cornerback for the Longhorns but might project at safety in Pittsburgh.

No. 20: Troy Fautanu, OT, Washington

How he fits.

One of the most versatile players in this draft, Fautanu is a bit of an oddly shaped offensive lineman — in a good way. At 6-foot-3, 317, Fautanu plays low to the ground but also has great length with 34 1/2-inch arms. A left tackle at Washington, Fautanu is one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the class and a possible five-position prospect who could absolutely play guard or tackle — and possibly even center.

The Steelers need help in the middle of their offensive line. It wouldn’t be a shock if he gets a shot inside at center. If that doesn’t work out, he could play opposite Broderick Jones or inside at guard. This is a great draft pick and outstanding value at No. 20. — Nick Baumgardner

Dane Brugler’s analysis

Fautanu is explosive on the move and at contact with the foot quickness, body control and temperament to stack wins in both pass protection and as a run blocker in the NFL . Though he has the talent to remain at tackle, his skill set also projects well to guard and center, and he offers legitimate five-position potential at the next level.

Mike DeFabo’s analysis:  Why the Steelers drafted Fautanu

No. 51: Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia

If there was anyone built to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s West Virginia center Zach Frazier. This is a perfect match, and it could be one for a long time. One of the most consistent offensive linemen entering the draft, Frazier started 46 games, including 38 at center, for the Mountaineers. Frazier (6-2 1/2, 313) was a four-time high school heavyweight wrestling champion and a second-team All-American center last fall. —  Scott Dochterman

Frazier might not boast elite athleticism or length, but he is good enough in those areas and will win over NFL teams with his core strength, football IQ, competitive toughness and understanding of leverage. He projects as a quality NFL starting center the moment he is drafted.

Mark Kaboly’s analysis: Why the Steelers drafted Frazier

No. 84: Roman Wilson, WR, Michigan

One of the most reliable senior receivers in the class, Wilson’s sudden explosion and speed at the line of scrimmage is a difference-maker — and his route running and catch consistency only got better with every week at Michigan. A big-time competitor who will block his butt off, this is not only great value in the third round but also a perfect fit for what the franchise wants to do moving forward. — Baumgardner

Wilson is a speedy slot with the hands and competitive makeup to pester defenses and consistently move the sticks. He has the talent to win a starting role for an NFL offense.

Mark Kaboly’s analysis: Why the Steelers drafted Wilson

No. 98 (compensatory, from Eagles ): Payton Wilson, ILB, NC State

A tackling machine with sideline-to-sideline speed (he ran a 4.43 40), Wilson made 402 tackles in his career and is one of the fastest and most instinctive ‘backers in this class. There are major injury concerns. In fact, NFL Network reported Friday that one of Wilson’s knees does not have an ACL. He might not make it beyond his first contract (he’s also already 24), but Wilson (when healthy) is ready to play right now. — Baumgardner

Wilson’s medicals will be a key factor in his final grade, but he is a rangy and instinctive player who impacts the game in different ways, because of his effort and toughness. His four-down potential will separate him from most linebacker prospects.

No. 119: Mason McCormick, G/C, South Dakota State

McCormick doesn’t consistently play up to his testing numbers, but he has good eyes and feet in pass protection and outstanding physicality in the run game. He projects as a Day 1 backup (at all three interior line positions) who can become a starter with more coaching.

No. 178 (from Cardinals ): Logan Lee, DL, Iowa

Lee is a good-looking athlete with a worker-bee attitude, although his frame and skill set might find him caught in between positions at the next level, limiting his NFL ceiling. He projects best as a reserve base end or three-technique in a four-man line.

No. 195: Ryan Watts III, DB, Texas

A cornerback in college, Watts has elite size and an outstanding athletic profile, but undisciplined tendencies in his coverage likely will push him to safety in the NFL (he saw safety reps during East-West Shrine Bowl practices). His special-teams potential could help keep him on an NFL roster during his likely position change.

Projected lottery pick, former No. 1 recruit Ron Holland says talk of weak 2024 draft class 'burns' his blood

Holland is the former no. 1 prospect from the 2023 recruiting cycle.

High School Basketball: HoopHall West

The 2024 NBA Draft is nearly six weeks away, and the road to the draft is heating up this week in Chicago during the NBA Draft Combine. While experts have projected this could be one of the weaker draft classes at the top in nearly a decade, some of the top prospects in the upcoming class -- including former No. 1 overall recruit Ron Holland -- pushed back on that notion during his media availability in the Windy City.

"It definitely bothers me for sure," Holland  told reporters on Tuesday about the upcoming draft class. "If you put us against any other draft class, we just don't have a standout unicorn or anyone like that, but we can all be very good role players one day. Some of us could be All-Stars. Governor Parson accepts Conway High School student’s invitation to visit school as part of teacher’s assignment

CONWAY, Mo. (KY3) - Wednesday (May 15) marked a historic occasion in Conway, Missouri, and it was all because a high school student took a teacher’s assignment and ran with it.

Christen Wilson teaches Civics at Conway High School, and little did she know that a simple assignment about the Constitution would spark a momentous occasion in the small Laclede County town of just over 700 people, thanks to junior student Kolby Wicker.

“I gave the class an assignment that they had to symbolize the Preamble,” Wilson explained. “And I told them to play to their strengths. So, if they’re a great woodworker, make symbols of the Preamble out of wood. And Kolby says, ‘I don’t really know what to do. What if I write to an elected official?’ I told him that was fine, and when he told me he was going to write the governor, I said, ‘Sure! Think big. Think outside the box.’ But never in a million years did I think the governor would accept the invitation.”

“I wrote a letter and sent in a formal request through his website,” Wicker said of his longshot attempt. “When I wrote the letter, I was thinking, it was never going to happen but I’ll do it anyway because I’m stubborn. It’s like Wayne Gretzky, who once said, ‘You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.’”

So Wicker took a shot and scored as during the school’s spring break in late March, he heard back from Governor Mike Parson’s office that Missouri’s top state official would love to accept the invitation.

Kolby then notified his teacher that his homework assignment had been completed.

“The message actually said: ‘Mrs. Wilson, Governor Parson has agreed to roll up at Conway,’” Wilson recalled with a laugh.

And sure enough, Governor Parson and his staff did roll up to Conway High School at 9:30 Wednesday morning.

Kolby Wicker was among the first in the receiving line to shake Parson’s hand.

“You’re the one who sent me that request,” Parson said as he greeted Wicker. “You made it happen for everybody here.”

Parson toured the school’s agricultural center, met with the Civics class, and was greeted by a packed house of students and adults in the gym. Wicker was in the seat right next to Parson as Principal Kathryn Taylor explained the historical significance of the occasion.

“Thanks for helping us celebrate what we believe to be the first time a governor has visited Conway,” she said as Parson smiled.

Parson made it clear why he decided to make the trip. A native of Wheatland and long-time resident of Bolivar, where he still owns and operates a family farm, the governor holds a special place in his heart for rural communities.

“My staff has a meeting every week to discuss my schedule, and as they were running through all the requests for appearances, I said, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s go back to Conway,’” Parson recalled. “I said to them, ‘I come from the kind of people who live in Conway. I grew up like the kids from Conway. I want to go there.’ And that’s the main reason I’m here today. I want all of you to understand that all things are possible. I’m standing here in front of you as one of those people who never dreamed I’d be in the position I am today.”

Parson told the crowd about his childhood growing up on a farm.

“There were four of us boys, and my mom and dad were sharecroppers,” he said. “So we moved from farm to farm when I was a kid just trying to scratch out a living. And I will tell you that mom and dad knew nothing about child labor laws. They didn’t even know what that meant. When you were old enough to get out there and drive a tractor or a truck, they put you to work. But one thing you learn by being out on the farm is a good work ethic.”

Parson explained that his life experiences, including his time in the military and law enforcement, prepared him for his most challenging days in the governor’s office when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and no one knew exactly what would happen.

“As students, you know that when you have a question, you can go to your teacher, head to the library, or go to the internet to find out the answers,” he said. “But here’s the challenge I had that you might have someday. When COVID first hit, there was nobody to ask. There was no playbook on what to do. You are the only one to decide what’s going to be best for the people of this state, and you have to live with that responsibility. But what prepares you for that moment is everything that’s happened to you before that moment. How you grew up, where you got your schooling, what your parents are like, what your grandparents are like, what common sense means, and what faith means. All that goes into making those decisions and those are the things that really influence your life more than you’ll ever know. Because at a difficult time, you’ll always go back to the foundation of where you came from. The vast majority of people don’t know where Wheatland or Conway is, but don’t you ever think that because you come from a small school, you’re at a disadvantage? I say it’s more of an advantage because of all the skill sets you learned and the way you were brought up.”

Parson concluded his message to the crowd by telling the students they had the responsibility to uphold the rights and freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and Constitution.

“The only way that the American Dream stays alive is through you,” he said to the students. “Someday, somebody’s going to open a door for you, and you are going to make the decision about whether you walk through the door or not. If you don’t walk through it, somebody else will, and you’ll be standing there scratching your head and wondering why you didn’t go through the door. When opportunity comes, you need to be ready for it.”

Afterward, the teacher and student who had made it all possible expressed relief and appreciation for what they’d just witnessed.

“This will be one of those stories I’ll tell my children and grandchildren,” Wicker said.

“Our town doesn’t get a lot of recognition, but I think this was such a proud moment for our community and our school,” Wilson said.

Carolina celebrates the Class of 2024 under the lights

The 6,700-plus Tar Heel graduates received words of wisdom from astronaut Zena Cardman ’10, ’14 (MS) at a ceremony presided over by Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts.

Students tossing caps at Commencement at Kenan Stadium

Carolina’s Class of 2024 enjoyed a primetime Spring Commencement under the lights.

The newest Tar Heel alumni were treated to a first-of-its-kind Saturday night ceremony at Kenan Stadium (fireworks included) and heard from astronaut Zena Cardman ’10, ’14 (MS) , who told them in her keynote speech to make their own definitions of success as they began their next chapters.

“Success is yours to define, and your team is yours to build,” said Cardman, who is set to make her first spaceflight in August. Cardman and her team are headed to the International Space Station for a six-month mission.

But beyond accomplishments that can be listed on a resume, Cardman told the graduating class, “You know your values, what brings you joy, what questions make you curious. You know the people who matter to you.”

Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts presided over the ceremony that honored an estimated 4,265 undergraduates, 1,530 master’s degree candidates and 884 doctoral students. Of the graduates, 775 are first-generation students and 524 are Carolina Covenant Scholars .

“The confidence and certainty from your time here, the relationships you’ve built and the skills you’ve gained have prepared you to enter a world full of uncertainty,” Roberts said.

“Our college experience has been out of the ordinary,” said Lauryn Lovett, senior class president, noting that Saturday marked the “first actual graduation ceremony” for many of those in caps and gowns. “We are the COVID class. Despite a pandemic and several other hardships throughout our years, we’ve made it.”

Being trailblazers

In a couple of months, Cardman will get into a 200-foot-tall rocket. Within 75 seconds, she will have traversed over 6,000 miles upward and enter orbit in 10 minutes’ time.

But taking the stage Saturday night, Cardman said, “is the most terrifying thing I’ll do this year.”

If she was terrified, Cardman didn’t show it. She came with jokes — “This will be the first time I leave Kenan Stadium without a sunburn” — and offered a timely reminder on the importance of thanking mothers, including her own in the audience.

She offered several pieces of wisdom these graduates can carry with them. Among the most important was a message on choosing goals wisely and morally, a lesson related to her own patient journey as an astronaut. “If your goal requires cutting down someone else to get there, you need a different goal,” Cardman said.

She told her fellow Tar Heels to be trailblazers — and that it’s OK if they don’t know where that trail is leading.

“Just start walking,” she said. “You don’t actually have to know where you’re going if you know who you’re doing it for, and the most transformative journeys don’t actually need to take you very far at all.”

Sharing Carolina

Although Roberts’ time at the University began in January, Carolina’s interim chancellor said he quickly became impressed by many of the students honored Saturday.

His message to this group was one based on the importance of compromise and sharing, especially at a place like Carolina that “doesn’t belong to any one person or group.”

“Being the University of the People is not always easy, especially when the people are not of one mind and they never are. Being the University of the People means that we contain all that is great and all that is troubling about our society,” Roberts said.

As such, he told his audience of new graduates to embrace “shared effort” as they prepare to leave their “Heel print on this world.”

An illuminated celebration

As the night’s ceremony approached its end, a cappella group Clef Hangers performed “Carolina in My Mind,” and graduates were treated to a lightshow during a countdown to their cap and gown toss, which coincided with fireworks.

With that, a new group joined the ranks of Tar Heel alumni and enjoyed a celebration everyone who spoke on Saturday said they deserved.

Injured New York Yankees Star Set to Resume Rehab Assignment

Matthew postins | may 15, 2024.

Apr 22, 2024; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu.

  • New York Yankees

New York Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu appears ready to resume a rehab assignment this week after getting live at-bats at the team’s complex in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday.

Per the New York Post , the plan is for LeMahieu to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on either Thursday or Friday.

Two other injured Yankees, infielder Oswald Peraza and pitcher Tommy Kahnle, are with the Patriots on an rehab assignment. They are hosting Portland this week.

Returning to live game action is a significant step forward for LeMahieu, a player the Yankees were hoping would be their starting third baseman on Opening Day.

Instead, LeMahieu suffered non-displaced fracture of his right foot on a foul ball March 16 during spring training and was moved to the injured list after that. Originally, the Yankees termed it a foot contusion before an second MRI revealed the fracture after the swelling went down after the first MRI.

LeMahieu started a rehab assignment on April 23, but he only lasted one inning after he reported soreness in the foot and the Yankees opted to shut him down.

LeMahieu is in the fourth year of a six-year contract that pays him $90 million. He won the American League batting title in the truncated 2020 season, hitting .364 in his first year with the Yankees. But his average in each of his last three full seasons has been below his career average of .298, as he batted only .243 last season in 136 games.

In order to build depth around the position before the season the Yankees traded for Jon Berti, who spent some time on the injured list earlier this season.

The Yankees have used Oswaldo Cabrera primarily at third base and he has put together a solid season in LeMahieu’s absence.
