A report from the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom confirms children are avid social media users.

Some 99% of children aged three to 17 used the internet in 2021. YouTube was the most popular platform, with 89% of children using it. Meanwhile, half of kids used TikTok, a popular site which allows users to watch and share short videos.

Most social media platforms require users to be aged 13 or older . Nonetheless, the report found that a majority of children under 13 had their own profile on at least one social media app or site. One-third of parents of children aged five to seven said their child had a profile, which rose to 60% among children aged eight to 11.

Overcoming these age restrictions is clearly not a difficult task. Children simply supply a fake age when setting up their account. Meanwhile, some children have multiple accounts on the same platform – one for their friends, and another for their parents.

The report also found that roughly 16% of three and four-year-olds watch videos on TikTok. This could be children being shown videos by a parent or somebody else, and does not mean they have their own account. But they are still being exposed to social media content at a very young age.

With these findings in mind, it’s timely to take a look at what we know about how social media use can affect children across different age groups.

The good and the bad

Engaging with social media can have both positive and negative effects on people, especially children. My colleagues and I have shown that social media use is important for emotional support, community building and self-expression among adolescents, but that it can negatively impact mental health and wellbeing as well.

In our work at the Cyberpsychology Research Group at Nottingham Trent University, we have talked to young adolescents, their parents and teachers about perceived challenges and online harms from social media use.

We found that the effects range from spending increasing amounts of time online, behaviour change due to anticipated judgement from peers, and sensory overload, to more serious cognitive and emotional consequences such as attention problems, stress and anxiety.

New research suggests that there appear to be differences across age groups with regards to the effects social media use can have on life satisfaction. In a large UK sample of over 17,000 young people aged ten to 21, researchers found the detrimental effects of high levels of social media use may be especially pronounced at ages 14-15 and 19 for boys, and 11-13 and 19 for girls.

Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen revealed in 2021 that internal Facebook research has repeatedly shown detrimental mental health impacts of Instagram use for young girls.

Separately, we know excessive screen time can be associated with symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction .

Recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggest no screen time for children under two, and a maximum of one hour per day for those aged two to five years, focused on high-quality content (for example, content which is educational).

While we don’t know exactly what kind of content young children are watching on social media, it’s unlikely to be high-quality, and could be harmful.

What can we do?

With the recently published online safety bill , the UK government aims to make the UK the safest place in the world to go online. Accordingly, we need to consider the potentially detrimental impacts internet use in general and excessive social media use specifically can have on young people, especially those who are vulnerable.

We need to see increased user protection (such as age verification measures) and harm prevention initiatives (such as school-based education about the benefits and potential harms of social media use).

We also need to see the involvement of community and government organisations in education and awareness campaigns, as well as a focus on increased corporate social responsibility , where the industry takes an active approach in designing products with the best interests of the user in mind.

While we discourage over-pathologising everyday behaviour – for example, we shouldn’t assume everyone who spends a few hours online has a problem with their internet use – problematic behaviour needs to be acknowledged and users need to be supported. This can prevent it leading to negative mental health consequences.

Support for young internet users needs to come from parents, teachers, governments and the social media industry. Parents can be encouraged to start an open dialogue with their children, which will build rapport and allow children to open up about their social media use.

Social media has both positive and negative impacts on children and adolescents.

The influence of social media on youth mental health is shaped by many complex factors, including, but not limited to, the amount of time children and adolescents spend on platforms, the type of content they consume or are otherwise exposed to, the activities and interactions social media affords, and the degree to which it disrupts activities that are essential for health like sleep and physical activity. 6 Importantly, different children and adolescents are affected by social media in different ways, based on their individual strengths and vulnerabilities, and based on cultural, historical, and socio-economic factors. 7 , 8 There is broad agreement among the scientific community that social media has the potential to both benefit and harm children and adolescents. 6 , 9

Brain development is a critical factor to consider when assessing the risk for harm. Adolescents, ages 10 to 19, are undergoing a highly sensitive period of brain development. 10 , 11 This is a period when risk-taking behaviors reach their peak, when well-being experiences the greatest fluctuations, and when mental health challenges such as depression typically emerge. 12 , 13 , 14 Furthermore, in early adolescence, when identities and sense of self-worth are forming, brain development is especially susceptible to social pressures, peer opinions, and peer comparison. 11 , 13 Frequent social media use may be associated with distinct changes in the developing brain in the amygdala (important for emotional learning and behavior) and the prefrontal cortex (important for impulse control, emotional regulation, and moderating social behavior), and could increase sensitivity to social rewards and punishments. 15 , 16 As such, adolescents may experience heightened emotional sensitivity to the communicative and interactive nature of social media. 16 Adolescent social media use is predictive of a subsequent decrease in life satisfaction for certain developmental stages including for girls 11–13 years old and boys 14–15 years old. 17 Because adolescence is a vulnerable period of brain development, social media exposure during this period warrants additional scrutiny.

  • The Potential Benefits of Social Media Use Among Children and Adolescents

Social media can provide benefits for some youth by providing positive community and connection with others who share identities, abilities, and interests. It can provide access to important information and create a space for self-expression. 9 The ability to form and maintain friendships online and develop social connections are among the positive effects of social media use for youth. 18 , 19 These relationships can afford opportunities to have positive interactions with more diverse peer groups than are available to them offline and can provide important social support to youth. 18 The buffering effects against stress that online social support from peers may provide can be especially important for youth who are often marginalized, including racial, ethnic, and sexual and gender minorities. 20 , 21 , 22 For example, studies have shown that social media may support the mental health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, queer, intersex and other youths by enabling peer connection, identity development and management, and social support. 23 Seven out of ten adolescent girls of color report encountering positive or identity-affirming content related to race across social media platforms. 24 A majority of adolescents report that social media helps them feel more accepted (58%), like they have people who can support them through tough times (67%), like they have a place to show their creative side (71%), and more connected to what’s going on in their friends’ lives (80%). 25 In addition, research suggests that social media-based and other digitally-based mental health interventions may also be helpful for some children and adolescents by promoting help-seeking behaviors and serving as a gateway to initiating mental health care. 8 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29

  • The Potential Harms of Social Media Use Among Children and Adolescents

Over the last decade, evidence has emerged identifying reasons for concern about the potential negative impact of social media on children and adolescents.

A longitudinal cohort study of U.S. adolescents aged 12–15 (n=6,595) that adjusted for baseline mental health status found that adolescents who spent more than 3 hours per day on social media faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes including symptoms of depression and anxiety. 30

As of 2021, 8th and 10th graders now spend an average of 3.5 hours per day on social media. 31 In a unique natural experiment that leveraged the staggered introduction of a social media platform across U.S. colleges, the roll-out of the platform was associated with an increase in depression (9% over baseline) and anxiety (12% over baseline) among college-aged youth (n = 359,827 observations). 32 The study’s co-author also noted that when applied across the entirety of the U.S. college population, the introduction of the social media platform may have contributed to more than 300,000 new cases of depression. 32 , 33 If such sizable effects occurred in college-aged youth, these findings raise serious concerns about the risk of harm from social media exposure for children and adolescents who are at a more vulnerable stage of brain development.

Limits on the use of social media have resulted in mental health benefits for young adults and adults. A small, randomized controlled trial in college-aged youth found that limiting social media use to 30 minutes daily over three weeks led to significant improvements in depression severity. 34 This effect was particularly large for those with high baseline levels of depression who saw an improvement in depression scores by more than 35%. 35 Another randomized controlled trial among young adults and adults found that deactivation of a social media platform for four weeks improved subjective well-being (i.e., self-reported happiness, life satisfaction, depression, and anxiety) by about 25–40% of the effect of psychological interventions like self-help therapy, group training, and individual therapy. 36

In addition to these recent studies, correlational research on associations between social media use and mental health has indicated reason for concern and further investigation. These studies point to a higher relative concern of harm in adolescent girls and those already experiencing poor mental health, 37 , 38 , 39 as well as for particular health outcomes like cyberbullying-related depression, 40 body image and disordered eating behaviors, 41 and poor sleep quality linked to social media use. 42 For example, a study conducted among 14-year-olds (n = 10,904) found that greater social media use predicted poor sleep, online harassment, poor body image, low self-esteem, and higher depressive symptom scores with a larger association for girls than boys. 43 A majority of parents of adolescents say they are somewhat, very, or extremely worried that their child’s use of social media could lead to problems with anxiety or depression (53%), lower self-esteem (54%), being harassed or bullied by others (54%), feeling pressured to act a certain way (59%), and exposure to explicit content (71%). 44

As is applicable to most other such phenomenon, it comes with both its advantages and disadvantages. However, if one has to carefully weigh these two sides, it is clearly evident that in this case, the negative effects on internet influence outweigh its positive effects.

The adverse consequences include social, physical, emotional and psychological consequences, and therefore, internet influence can turn out to be a very harmful influence for kids if it is not channelized and supervised in a proper way.

The main cause due to which internet influence on kids is so widespread and commonplace is because the apparent accuracy of the internet as a source of information, and also the wide variety and volume of information it can possibly provide one with.

Therefore, the same problems which used to befuddle kids before they had access to use internet do not have the same effect on them any longer. Also, the question of parental influence might also arise here.

The main positive effect or advantage of internet influence on kids is their enhancement of knowledge through browsing the internet, as there are various websites scattered all over this virtual form of library which can supply kids with many sources to quench their curiosity if there is a certain degree of supervision over what sort of websites the kids are having access to.

Another positive effect is the fact that kids can now use social media as a genuine platform to showcase all their talents, through websites like YouTube, etc.

Social networking is another advantage of the internet, but a careful balance needs to be maintained which would ensure that kids only use social media to their benefit, for example: for a healthy exchange of ideas and opinions.

Also, there are many online games and other activities that can work towards enhancing the kids’ hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and creative skills. It also, in turn, contributes to the development of one’s visual and social intelligence.

Moreover, in one survey conducted, it has been proven that kids who regularly use the internet thrive in academics as compared to their peers who do not have any similar access.

Also, through the internet, kids can nurture various new ideas which would open their minds to completely new possibilities and improve their imagination.

Furthermore, through the internet, kids can lay their hands on various archives of books, magazines, television shows, and movies which are not available for them otherwise. Through this, indirectly, the knowledge base of the kids is further expanded.

Health hazards

Spending too much time in front of the computer screens pose serious threats to the lives of kids engaged in the same. This way, their lifestyles become essentially a sedentary one and their movements are minimized to the level of serious inactivity.

This can cause problems to one’s bones, muscles, and joints as they do not undergo a considerable amount of physical activity and movement this way and therefore their purpose is fulfilled to the optimum level. One’s cognitive development can also be greatly stunned by an overdose of internet addiction.

Too much of computer use can also cause a considerable amount of strain to one’s eyesight. Exposure to media violence can also hamper one’s emotional well being to a great extent, which is one of the chief health hazards caused due to excessive internet influence on kids.

Spending a longer time playing video games can also cause pain to one’s carpal tunnel and certain other parts of their body due to overuse beyond one’s normal threshold of physical tolerance.

Most importantly, a sedentary lifestyle like that has been mentioned here can be a major cause to weight problems, eventually leading to obesity, and it is needless to say how harmful obesity is in a young and delicate age.

The internet has been used as a medium of cyber violence or bullying. We have seen countless movies and TV shows where the internet has effectively been used to harm or injure other people by hampering with their mental and psychological well-being this is what bullying actually leads to.

The recent blue whale game which became infamous due to the fatal influence it was having on kids all throughout the world is yet another alarming consequence of what excessive exposure to the darker side of the internet can do to kids.

As kids are impressionable and vulnerable to many kinds of influences, they are also easily targeted by people who want to adversely affect others, as has been the case of this game. Therefore, suicide rates can also rise through excessive internet influence.

Also, through social media especially, kids start comparing themselves and their lives to others, and when they see themselves as an inferior through this process of social comparison, they might succumb into loneliness, self-loathing, and even frustration and depression.

This shows that an unchecked exposure to the internet can harm the kids’ mental health as well.

No good thing remains good in an unchecked excess. The same can be said for the internet as well. No matter how big a boon it might be for the entire mankind, we cannot deny the harms it has caused and will continue to cause to the mankind as well. But we cannot blame the internet completely.

It is proven that a cautious approach to the utilization of the services the internet has to offer can easily keep a lot of potential harms at bay.

Therefore, if the internet is handled with caution, and if the kids are properly taught what to use and how exactly to use it, the internet might as well stop being a source of any kind of negative influence on the kids of today’s generation.

Internet has put the information at our fingertips and has influenced almost all aspects of our daily lives. We now get our news on the internet, communicate through the internet, schedule our tasks on the internet, shop on the internet, and even carry out financial affairs on the internet among many other things. While internet has largely been a positive force in our lives, like every other technology it also poses certain challenges. One of the major challenges has been managing the potential negative influences of internet on kids who do not have the maturity to make responsible decisions. Further complicating the issue is the fact that children have access to internet almost everywhere. The parents and the society can and should take steps to protect our children from the negative influences of the internet.

Kids are often a favorite target of marketers. This is because kids lack the maturity to make informed decisions as well as weigh the pros and cons of products and services, thus, it is easy to influence them through emotions. In addition, internet has made it possible to gather data on website users and many websites are particularly geared at kids. Marketers have never lagged behind in innovation and many marketers are now using internet games to increase loyalty among their young customers and induce them to demand the product. These games that are part of the overall marketing strategy are also called advergames. A study published in the Journal of Children and Media found that children were 77 percent more likely to visit pages with advergames than other sites and spent 88 percent more time on these sites as compared to others. The study also found that children playing games that advertised unhealthy foods ate 56 percent more unhealthy snacks as compared to those playing games advertising healthy food. Thus, the study showed that media including games on the internet do influence children’s food habits. The study also provides a great solution which is to develop more games that advertise healthy foods. The children who played games with healthy food ate 50 percent more grapes and carrots than unhealthy game players (Park). Another solution to discourage children from harmful advergames is to encourage them to engage in physical activities and parents could also participate in physical activities to motivate children.

Internet has also increased the risk that kids are exposed to adult material at early age. A study by RAND and the University of North Carolina showed that teenagers who view sex material in the media are more likely to engage in same behaviors themselves (Teresa). A survey by London School of Economics in 2002 found that 90 percent of children between the ages of 8 and 16 had viewed pornography on the internet and in many instances, the sex sites were accessed unintentionally (Louge). Several measures could be taken to reduce the exposure of kids to adult material on the internet. First of all, parents should install Parental Control Software on their computers. They could also complement the software with personal monitoring. In addition, the government should require adult websites to make it more difficult to access their content without reliable verification tools. Unlike old days when adult programs would often air late night when most of the children would already have gone to bed, adult content on the internet is available round the clock which makes the issue even more challenging.

The exposure to internet has also been increasing undesirable behavior among young people. The Office of the Surgeon General stated that children are theoretically more susceptible to behavioral influences as active participants as compared to being observers. If true, this means that interactive games on the internet with violent themes may have stronger influences on kids than violence in movies (StateUniversity.com). Studies have shown that adolescents form virtual support communities to support unhealthy behaviors such as eating disorder. Similarly, a national poll found that 54 percent girls reported being online without their parents’ knowledge as well as being involved in some sort of cyber relationship (Louge). Another phenomenon that is finally catching our attention is cyber bullying. It is possible that kids are more encouraged to engage in bullying online because they can stay anonymous, can bully whenever they want to, and have easy access to the victim’s social profiles. It is not uncommon to read news on the internet where the victims of cyber bullying were forced into the corner and eventually ended up committing suicide.

Internet is here to stay and it may have created some challenges but it is not uncommon with technologies that have such widespread influence on numerous aspects of life. The key is to take steps to protect our children and teach them safe internet habits because they do not have the experience or the maturity to fully understand the risks of internet. Over time, these problems may decline as we better understand them and tackle them through both personal behavior and regulations aimed at internet companies and other stakeholders.

Starting around age 10, children’s brains undergo a fundamental shift that spurs them to seek social rewards, including attention and approval from their peers.

At the same time, we hand them smartphones (Kids & Tech, Influence Central, 2018).

Social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat have provided crucial opportunities for interaction that are a normal part of development—especially during a time of severe isolation prompted by the pandemic. But they’ve also been increasingly linked to mental health problems , including anxiety, depressive symptoms, and body image concerns.

So, why do kids face a higher risk of harm on social media?

Let’s dig deeper.

Social rewards and the brain

Between the ages of 10 and 12, changes in the brain make social rewards—compliments on a new hairstyle, laughter from a classmate—start to feel a lot more satisfying. Specifically, receptors for the “happy hormones” oxytocin and dopamine multiply in a part of the brain called the ventral striatum, making preteens extra sensitive to attention and admiration from others.

“We know that social media activity is closely tied to the ventral striatum,” said Mitch Prinstein, APA’s chief science officer. “This region gets a dopamine and oxytocin rush whenever we experience social rewards.”

Right next door to the ventral striatum lies the ventral pallidum, a region of the brain key for motivating action. These structures, which lie beneath the more recently evolved cortex, are older parts of the brain that drive instinctual behaviors.

In adulthood, social media use is also linked to activation in the brain’s reward centers, but two key differences may lessen harm, Prinstein said. First, adults tend to have a fixed sense of self that relies less on feedback from peers. Second, adults have a more mature prefrontal cortex, an area that can help regulate emotional responses to social rewards.

Permanent and public

In youth, the drive for approval has historically helped kids and teens develop healthy social skills and connections. But arriving at school in a new pair of designer jeans, hoping your crush will smile at you in the hallway, is worlds away from posting a video on TikTok that may get thousands of views and likes, Prinstein said.

Part of what makes online interactions so different from in-person ones is their permanent—and often public—nature, according to research by Jacqueline Nesi, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Brown University ( Psychological Inquiry , Vol. 21, No. 3, 2020).

“After you walk away from a regular conversation, you don’t know if the other person liked it, or if anyone else liked it—and it’s over,” Prinstein said. “That’s not true on social media.”

Instead, kids, their friends, and even people they’ve never met can continue to seek, deliver, or withhold social rewards in the form of likes, comments, views, and follows.

As children and teens increasingly go online for entertainment and connection, parents, scholars, and policymakers are concerned that young people’s biology is making them particularly vulnerable to—and in some cases, even exploited by—social media.

Protecting young users

Further research shows how this biological vulnerability plays out in the lives of children and teens. Younger social media users are more likely than older ones to have body image issues, while kids who use Instagram or Snapchat before age 11 face a higher risk of online harassment (Saiphoo, A. N., & Vahedi, Z., Computers in Human Behavior , Vol. 101, 2019; Charmaraman, L., et al., Computers in Human Behavior , Vol. 127, 2022).

These and other findings have prompted recommendations from the U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, MD, that social media and other technology companies help minimize fallout from their products, including by prioritizing the wellbeing of young users and by sharing their data with independent researchers ( Protecting youth mental health (PDF, 1.01MB) , The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory, 2021).

“It’s time we stopped trying to make a profit on kids’ developing brains,” Prinstein said. “For the first time in human history, we have given up autonomous control over our social relationships and interactions, and we now allow machine learning and artificial intelligence to make decisions for us.”

“We have already seen how this has created tremendous vulnerabilities to our way of life. It’s even scarier to consider how this may be changing brain development for an entire generation of youth,” he said.

This dangerous syndrome has recently developed and, according to the statistics, has infiltrated the minds of millions of people all over the world (McGinnis, 2020). Fear of missing out syndrome is usually characterized by the feeling that people live a less fulfilling life than those around them (McGinnis, 2020). The stronger this feeling, the greater the desire to check other people’s profiles. This syndrome provokes dangerous unfavorable comparison, which affects the human mind leading to psychological distortions. It is incredibly hazardous for children who are being at the stage of shaping their personalities. Fear of missing out syndrome can provoke the establishment of envy and negative comparison emotion, which interfere with the normal psychological development of the mental strength causing moral weakness and lack of confidence.

Thus, this problem is essential to be discussed by sociologists because the impact of social media cannot be eliminated completely. Through the research, scientists can design the methods how to minimize the adverse effects of this syndrome on children. From my perspective, the research on this topic requires various experiments, including both research methods: qualitative and quantitative. The combination of methodologies allows researchers to gain more detailed data about the investigated topic (Ferris & Stein, 2020). If I were able to conduct research on his specific issue, I would start qualitative research because it allows gaining in-depth insights into the subjects’ personalities. The prevalent method which will be helpful for the study is the interview or open-ended questions. Such an approach will help to formulate the scope of the problem. The next step is quantitative research which will help collect the numerical data regarding the problem. Only the combination of research methodologies can provide a full-fledged picture of the problem.

Therefore, the syndrome of missing out is one of the most dangerous social media-involving threats for children. The question of the connection of the syndrome and the children’s future success and wellbeing is not established yet. It is essential to elaborate on this topic scientifically involving the practical and theoretical experiments. This sociological problem requires urgent discussion. Only through the sorely conducted scientific experiments sociologist will design the approaches of fighting the negative impacts of this syndrome. The psychological and social training should be updated to prepare children to cope with the syndrome of missing out.

The Effects of Internet Usage on Children

The Internet is a platform that most people in modern society use to perform a variety of tasks. It has recently become one of the most popular networks among children. Some people use it to be more positive, and others use it to be totally harmful. As a result, increased internet usage has both positive and negative effects on children's social, physical, psychological, academic, and moral growth.

Social Effects

Socially, the internet makes it easier to communicate with friends and people who live far away. In addition, the child frequently exchanges knowledge with their peers through the internet, thus increasing communication. Nonetheless, the internet limits children's physical interaction with others because some children may prefer to spend more time on the internet than going out and meeting friends. Excessive internet usage makes the kids with less or no time for exercise and sports activities which might adversely affect their physical health. They may develop health effects like poor muscular development and obesity. Kids who suffer from this conditions may end up making their parents spend a lot of money on their treatment and or therapies. Nevertheless, limited internet usage contributes to a healthy expansion of eye-hand coordination.

Psychological Effects

Psychologically, kids can get primarily affected with continued internet usage. They may feel lonely and isolated since they only interact with a machine that cannot verbally talk. Conversely, this decreases with time as kids effectively learn to use the technology. Sometimes addiction to the internet can lead to psychological disorder in kids thus developing strange behaviors like neglecting of social bonds and dishonesty vices. A kid may, for example, lie about the information on the internet as educative yet this might not be correct.

Academic Effects

Academically, the internet assists the kids in exploring a lot of information that may not be available in their textbooks or other education materials. They also enjoy the profound digital knowledge and make references to various collections like audios and images. With such information, academic work like sharing assignments and research get enhanced though it might be challenging to others. The reason for this is because, at a tender age, kids have not developed the capacity to manipulate the information they find online.

Moral Effects

The internet degrades moral values of many kids. With exposure to all kinds of information on internet, children get to learn how harmful drugs, for instance, bhang are used. They also get to interact with victims of the same who comment negatively on social media sites encouraging substances abuse. Out of curiosity, kids practice this slowly becoming less useful in the future. Again kids are exposed to pornographic materials thus corrupting their tender minds.

The Internet is one of the most important modern facilities in todays world that everyone including the children should have access to. This is mainly based on the fact that the internet is able to provide the children with unlimited information and resources. According to research, more than two-thirds of the young children aged eight years and above use the internet on a daily basis. The use of the internet for education purposes by the children has been a complete game changer since it has been a cheap and easy way to gain access to information as compared to the earlier days when there was no internet. However, the use of the internet by the children has had varied causes as well as effect to the young children. Most of this causes and effects have been claimed to be both positive and negative, but the negative effects have lately seemed to more than the positive. There are several negative effects have been linked to the use of the internet by young children.

Physical health

The consistent and prolonged day to day use of the internet by the young children has deprived them their enough time to play and also engage in other physical activities. This kind of lifestyle by the young children has limited them to physical activities like playing, and this has exposed them to chronic ailments like obesity. Research by Health specialists has also indicated that the repetitive use of computers by the children can cause eye strain and blurred eye vision because of the high image motions from the computers screens. Health research has also shown that some websites with high flashing effects can cause epileptic seizures to the young children.

Brain development

The use of the internet by young children has been said to affect the childs brain development since all the information they get readily available, and this may make them not differentiate between facts and also reality. This is based on the fact that children are not engaging themselves to the real life scenario of their study case. An example of this is online gaming which only exposes them to a virtual reality world as compared to real life games which expose them to the real life world from which they can learn plenty of accurate and real things.

Social isolation and moral corruption

The continued use and interaction of internet by the children simulates the world that separates them from the real world. This affects the childrens social life because they dont get to interact with other peers. This kind of social world simulation is mainly found on social media platforms where they interact with peers through applications like Facebook. The internet has also played a huge negative impact in corrupting the morals of young children because it has no age limit and it exposes them to a lot of explicit content like pornography and violence.

Positive impacts

The internet has also played a huge positive impact on the young children. Is has provisioned the young children with a variety of information and also plenty of academic resources to the students which has boosted their knowledge at a young age. Some of the online social activities like gaming have helped to boost teamwork and high creativity to the young children, and this has hugely helped them in solving complex issues in real life still at a young age. The internet also exposes the young children to a global world helping them to acquire plenty of knowledge and skills from different places around the world and applying the learned things in their day to day life.

A cause and effect essay explains why events happen (causes), what results (effects), and the relationship between the cause and effect(s).

Overview of a Cause and Effect Essay

Cause and effect essays are commonly structured in four ways: causal chain, causes, effects, and causes and effects. Once you decide on a structure, you should choose your topic. You may already have some causes and/or effects in mind. Brainstorm to come up with ideas. Brainstorming helps you think more about your topic and gives you a good selection of causes and effects to choose from. Choose what causes and effects to focus on. Develop a discussion of the causes and effects to build a case for the plausibility of these causes and effects and their relationship.

Step 1: Choose a Focus

Cause and effect essays are commonly structured in four ways:

  • Causal chain
  • Causes & effects

Start by considering the length of your essay and other requirements. Follow the focus and topic assigned by your instructor. Otherwise, choose the option that is best for you.

Causal Chain

A causal chain follows a specific sequence of causes and effects. It starts with an initial topic and then moves forward, identifying a specific effect of this topic. This effect, then, causes another effect, and so on down the chain.

Topic → leads to A → leads to B → leads to C → final effect

A causal chain is a good structure if you want to build up to a certain key effect of the topic and show the reader the steps it takes to get there.

The causal chain structure works well for either a short (2-3 pages) or a long (4+ pages) essay, depending on how many steps you need to discuss to reach the final effect.

When you focus on causes, start with a topic you’re interested in and think about what caused it? In a way, you’re looking backward to understand the factors that caused something or that keep it happening.

Causes → Topic

This is good for a short essay because the scope is limited to focusing on causes.

If you focus on effects, start with a topic and work forward by asking what happens due to this event or topic? What are its effects?

Topic → Effects

Effects may be in the future. For example, if a certain law is passed, what will be the most likely outcome? We can’t know for sure until it happens, but we can use existing factors and logical reasoning to make a case for certain possibilities.

You could also focus on effects that are occurring or that have occurred. For example, what effects do video games have on a certain age group? This might also allow you to focus your analysis on an existing debate. In this example, the nature of the effects of video games on children is a common topic of debate.

This is good for a short essay because what you are covering is limited to effects.

Causes and Effects

With this focus, you’d consider what makes something happen and what its effects are.

Causes → Topic → Effects

If you are writing a longer essay, you could consider discussing both causes and effects. This wider scope could result in a more thorough examination of the topic. But make sure not to set yourself up to do too much. You don’t have to touch on every cause and effect you brainstorm. Rather, your focus should relate to your purpose. Remembering your focus allows you to screen out the causes and effects that aren’t relevant to your purpose.

The cause and effect structure is good for a longer essay (4 or more pages) because you’ll have to cover more material.

Step 2: Choose a Topic

Now that you’ve decided on a focus, what do you want to write about? Your assignment prompt might give you some direction, but if the essay is open-topic, consider what you’d be interested in writing about. Here are some ideas to help you choose:

Consider Your Purpose

You want to have an end goal, a purpose. You’re discussing causes and effects, but why? To show people what? To convince people of what? For example, you could analyze effects for the purpose of showing that video games help teenagers develop good teamwork and decision-making skills.

At first, you might think about what you want to learn or explore. Maybe you’ve found that jobs in a career field you’re interested in are increasing or decreasing, and you’d like to explore the causes for that. Maybe you’d like to explore the effects of companies allowing employees to work from home. If your research leads you to conclude that these effects are mostly positive, you might focus your purpose on convincing employers to offer more work-from-home flexibility. To do that, you’d analyze the effects.

Consider Your Audience

Consider your audience can help you focus your topic and develop content. What are the relevant characteristics of your audience? What are their likely questions, concerns, or biases? Answering these questions helps you decide what to focus on. If your audience is owners or leaders of a struggling business, you could analyze the causes of their poor sales to help them improve. This example shows the connection between audience and purpose.

A phenomenon is something noteworthy or special that stands out. The topic could be from pop culture, science, current events, or anything else. You could make an argument for the causes of a movie’s popularity or explore why a particular age group favors a certain social media platform. Topics are everywhere!

Trend , as used here, doesn’t mean a fad, but rather, something that rises or falls in popularity over time.

If you write on a trend, decide the beginning and end of the period you will be discussing. For instance, the rise of women in the workforce starting from WWII makes sense because with men fighting in the war, women had to step into several key industries normally dominated by men. However, if you tried to discuss significant causes of the increase of women in the workforce from WWII to the present, you’d probably find that to be too long of a period of time to discuss thoroughly.

Step 3: Brainstorm Causes and Effects

You may already have some causes and effects in mind. Keep brainstorming to come up with more. You won’t write about everything, but brainstorming helps you think more about your topic and gives you a good selection of causes and effects to choose from.

As you brainstorm, consider different types of causes and effects.

Surface Causes and Effects

Surface causes and effects are obvious. They come immediately to mind, and their connection to the topic is clear or well-known. For example, the connection between smoking and lung damage.  Because of this, surface causes and effects usually don’t need extensive development. While they could have a role in your essay, you wouldn’t want to focus solely on obvious causes and effects.

Below-the-Surface Causes and Effects

These are not immediately obvious. This doesn’t mean they’re baseless “conspiracy theory” ideas, but that they’re not things people would immediately know or think of. They might be more complicated or even rarely acknowledged on a conscious level. These might not even occur to you until you’ve done more research and thought more about the topic. Below-the-surface causes and effects take more work to develop in an essay, but they are generally more intriguing.

Immediate Causes and Effects

Immediate causes and effects happen right before or after the topic. Because of this proximity, they are often more obvious, although they are not necessarily simple.

Remote or Background Causes and Effects

These happen well before or after the topic. You’ll have to think about the length of time that makes sense for your topic. If you are considering the increase of women in the workforce, considering WWII probably makes sense, even though it was over seventy years ago. However, if you are speculating about the causes of the popularity of Facebook, seventy years in the past is too far.

Perpetuating Causes

Perpetuating causes not only make something happen but also keep it going as well. Such causes perpetuate the topic.

Step 4: Choose What Causes and Effects to Focus On

Use these ideas to help you decide what causes and effects to focus on:

  • Does your prompt tell you how many causes and effects to cover? Make sure to follow assignment instructions.
  • Choose causes and effects that help you accomplish your purpose.
  • Choose causes and effects relevant to your audience.
  • You might notice that certain causes/effects cluster around a particular idea or theme. You could choose to focus on that theme.
  • What types of causes and effects did you brainstorm? It will take more effort and writing space to develop an argument for the plausibility of a below-the-surface cause than a surface cause. Don’t take on more complicated causes and effects than you can develop in your page range.
  • Don’t go the route of using lots of obvious causes and effects. These won’t give you the chance to develop an in-depth analysis and your paper might end up more like a list.

Before you turn in that paper, don’t forget to cite your sources in APA format , MLA format , or a style of your choice.

Step 5: Develop a Discussion of Your Causes and Effects

You are looking for connections between the causes and the effects of the topic. You’re building a case for the plausibility of these causes and effects.

Have a working thesis in mind. You’ll probably refine it as you go.

Make sure to avoid the false causality logical fallacy . This can also be expressed as “coincidence doesn’t equal causation.” That one event precedes another does not make the first event a cause of another. It’s up to you as the writer to establish a firm causal link.

Think about the order in which you present the causes and effects. There might be some that form a foundation for understanding others. There might also be a chronological sequence, especially if you are following a causal chain. You might also choose to develop your most compelling cause or effect.
