Free Year 5 Maths Worksheets And Homework – Download, Print, Or View Online

Anantha Anilkumar

Here you’ll find all our Year 5 maths worksheets, and Year 5 maths tests that are suitable for use during classroom lessons and as homework.

  • What to expect from our Year 5 Maths worksheets

These KS2 maths worksheets cover every part of the Year 5 primary maths curriculum, to help your children practise and gain confidence in their understanding ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 SATs . Their focus is on retrieval practice – going over topics that children should already have covered and helping them strengthen their knowledge and understanding.

Most of our worksheets come in pdf format, and all of them are printable. But if you’re running out of printer ink, they can be viewed online too.

Every Year 5 maths test or worksheet comes with its own answer sheet, and guidance from the National Curriculum is included wherever it might be needed (for example, if there might be more than one correct answer for a question). Some worksheets also include model answers to help children break down the best way to solve a problem.

Note: The National Curriculum does not specify any place value teaching for Year 5. However this is often a good time to begin revising the topic (among others) in preparation for the KS2 SATs. Have a look at these place value worksheets as part of your revision.

Similarly, addition and subtraction work is largely an extension of what was covered in previous years. Take a look at our collection of addition and subtraction worksheets for practice materials for these topics.

Year 5 Maths Test: All topics

As a child gets closer to Year 6 and the Key Stage 2 SATs, it’s important they get used to the timings and styles of questions they might face. Our Year 5 maths tests includes two assessments – one arithmetic paper and one reasoning paper – with SATS style questions created by our curriculum experts, answers and a mark scheme with detailed explanations of how to solve each question.

Both papers should take about one hour to complete, and cover every part of the curriculum, from place value to geometry and 3d shapes. This makes them useful for checking children’s overall understanding of the maths they’ve learned in Year 5, as well as providing them with exam practice.

Year 5 Maths Test: Times Tables

While Year 5 children are past the newly introduced multiplication tables check, knowing your times tables is a key part of many other maths topics they will learn. So it’s always worth keeping up with practice, and these quick worksheets help a child see exactly which ones they know by heart, and which they struggle with.

Halloween Investigation

Ana and Ross looked in a trunk in the attic. They found old cloaks and gowns, hats and masks.

"I could wear a black cloak, green mask and pointy hat", said Ana.

"Look at me in the black cloak and Dracula mask. Put the crown on me please", said Ross.

How many possible costumes could Ross have made if he kept the black cloak and Dracula mask but wore one of the different hats?

Here are two other costumes that Ana and Ross made up.

List or draw all of the different cloaks and gowns, masks and hats that they have used.

If they changed around their clothes, hats and masks, how many different costumes do you think Ana and Ross could make?

Find out if your guess was correct.

Ross found extra masks in the trunk.
"I think I'll change my face!" laughed Ana.

I wonder how many other costumes Ana and Ross could put together if they put one of these other masks on.

Can you find out?

Ana looked deep into the trunk. "I've found a different cape", she cried. "Now we can make even more costumes!"

How many different costumes could Ana and Ross make altogether?

How can you be sure that you have found all of the possible costumes?

I wonder how many more different costumes they could possibly make if they had found this bag of old shoes....

Why do this problem?

Possible approach, key questions, possible extension, possible support.

Daily Maths Word Problems - Year 5 teaching resource

Advance Your Students’ Problem-Solving Skills

This set of problem-solving questions has been designed to support teachers when teaching students about problem-solving in mathematics. It provides students with the opportunity to work through 20 maths word problems, identifying the important information and how they can work it out using a variety of methods.

An answer sheet has been included. Use this resource in conjunction with the Daily Maths Problems PowerPoint.

NAPLAN Year 5 Maths Preparation

These simple problem-solving questions are also a great way to help students understand some of the word problems they may encounter when sitting NAPLAN. It’s important to give your students strategies that they can draw on when presented with a word problem in maths. Using these problem-solving questions here are some suggested strategies you can empower your students with:

  • Daily practice. After spending time explicitly explaining how to work through a word problem – use the word problems from these worksheets as daily problem-solving practice.
  • Teach them the strategies. There are many ways students can solve maths word problems such as; breaking the word problem into smaller parts and drawing a picture to visualise what the problem is asking.
  • Underline. Teach your students to underline the important parts of a maths word problem – remind them that there is often trick information in word problems that they don’t need to solve the problem.

How to Use This Resource

Once you download the PDF, there are many ways you can use the resource. Here are some suggestions:

  • Print and create booklets for your students to use.
  • Cut and laminate each word problem and have students use mini whiteboard markers to solve one problem a day.

Children use all of the digits 0 to 9 once only to create pairs of five-digit numbers, with a total as close to 80,000 as possible.

Children create two amounts of money – one with even digits, one with odd digits – and add these. They look for patterns of even/odd in the totals.

Children subtract numbers with consecutive digits from numbers with identical digits and record the different possible answers.

Children experiment with parallel and angular perspective when drawing 3D shapes.

Long as you like (1): Children create chains of numbers by finding factors and multiples.  Their aim is to create the longest chain possible. Fraction pictures (2): Children use knowledge of equivalent fractions to work out what fraction each shape is as part of the whole picture, and which shapes are the same size.

Children explore patterns when multiplying numbers with consecutive digits by 8.

Children find out if prime numbers become less frequent as we consider sets of larger numbers.

Children explore patterns in a Talisman Square. They find differences between adjacent numbers on a 4 x 4 grid and then explore arrangements on a 3 x 3 grid.

Children find out how many times the digit 9 is used on the 24 hour digital clock between noon and midnight.

Children explore patterns when adding fractions. They create fractions with related denominators and then add these, turning improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Children explore addition patterns on a star derived from a simple magic star.  They use mental or written addition to add 4-digit numbers.
