Nigeria, the land of my ancestors; the nation where I was birthed. Nigeria is a beautiful country endowed with abundant human and natural resources.

With a population that exceeds 200 million people, there are ample opportunities, especially for international trade.

Nigeria is abundantly blessed with natural resources, boasting as the largest producer and exporter of oil in Africa, and the 11th largest in the whole wide world.

With the resources at the country’s disposal, it’s no surprise that it has the largest economy in Africa.

In a utopian world, Nigeria would’ve been one of the most powerful countries on earth and a desirable investment spot.

However, that’s sadly not the case.

It’s been 61 years since the nation gained her independence, and she’s still far off from reaching her full potential.

In 1960, when Nigeria became independent, the world had its eyes on the most populous black nation, and for the right reasons.

At that time, Nigeria boasted excellence in intellectual and educational pursuits, business, international diplomacy, as well as military and political leadership.

When Congo was in tumult, the UN peacekeeping forces relied upon Nigeria for leadership and military support. This occurred when other countries needed help too; they turned to Nigeria. 

Nigeria spearheaded the anti-apartheid struggle in Southern African countries such as South Africa, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

The West African nation also supported and funded liberation movements in Namibia, Angola, and Mozambique, amongst others.

The African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarded Nigeria as their lifeline, and to a great extent, they still do.

While this might seem like an impressive outlook, Nigeria’s affairs aren’t in order indoors. The country faces several problems.

Home to over 250 different ethnic groups, the country’s progress has been stumped by incompetent leaders and uncommitted citizens.

With all the resources at the nation’s disposal, Nigeria is still plagued by high unemployment rates, poor infrastructures, and an ever looming threat of dissolution.

Another issue is insecurity, which has become an ever-growing problem over the past decade.

While Nigeria has been combating a lot of problems on various fronts, the rapid deterioration of security is threatening to break the nation apart at the seams.

Recent research into the effects of the insurgency in the country’s North-Eastern parts reveals that it has dented Nigeria’s stability, development, and sovereignty.

The country’s armed forces are underequipped and overworked, and it’s been a struggle to battle the terrorist unit- Boko Haram- and defend the nation’s borders.

The case is similar for the Nigerian Police Force. The substandard equipment and poor training have made them underdogs when fighting against criminals.

One can’t help but wonder if there’s a way to stop and reverse Nigeria’s downward spiral.

Inscribed on several yellow commercial buses, synonymous with the bustling city of Lagos, are the words “No condition is permanent.”

This is proof that there’s resilience in Nigerians. It’s one of several reasons why I believe change is possible.

The grit and hope displayed by Nigerians, from the slums to the average class citizens, are admirable.

People are holding out hope for a better future, for themselves and their children.

There’s evidence in a bright future as even with the past woes, Nigeria is breaking new strides in terms of success.

A few months ago, the Federal Government approved a $5.8 billion hydroelectric project, with a capacity of 3,050 megawatts.

This is the nation’s largest ever in the electrical power sector, it is done in collaboration with China, and the project should be completed by 2027.

The objective is to provide stable electricity to at least half of the nation, something that has been a pipe dream until now.

Agriculture is another sector that’s recording growth. The government, in an attempt to reduce total reliance on oil, has encouraged grain farming.

This will create diversity in the economy, an essential ingredient for growth.

In this line, the Federal Government of Nigeria launched the Anchor Borrower’s Program in 2015.

This initiative is a multi-billion dollar program geared towards agricultural development by aiding small-scale farmers in raising their production capacity.

As Nigerian highways have been deteriorating in functionality over the years, there’s a new attempt to relieve strains on them.

This is embodied by the investment in rail transit, which hasn’t been in proper use in the nation for a long time. 

A 186 km train route connecting Abuja, the federal capital, with Kaduna, a key northern city, was built for $1.1 billion.

Meanwhile, a $1.5 billion train project will connect Lagos, the country’s commercial capital, and Ibadan, 150 km away.

In general, the investment climate in Nigeria has improved significantly.

It’s proven by Nigeria’s rising 24 places in 2017, on the World Bank’s “Ease of doing Business” rating from 169th to 145th.

It’s undeniable there’s more to do if the country is to reach great heights.

However, one can be optimistic, as reports have touted Nigeria as one of the top ten countries improved by recent reforms.

One of the sectors that have experienced massive growth over the past decade is the Telecommunications industry.

According to the Nigerian Communications Commission, there are more than 150 million active users amongst service providers. An impressive statistic, considering it’s the largest in Africa.

As with any place with opportunities, both foreign and domestic investors have been cashing in massively on this.

In 2016, Nigeria’s Telecommunications authority revealed that mobile phone subscribers spent a total of $6.6 billion. The previous year, the figure was at $5.6 billion.

This implies steady growth, and even bigger ones, as the industry is expanding even until 2021.

As a developing country, Nigeria has its share of inconsistent political history.

Even with corruption being a constant roadblock for growth, Nigeria is improving.

I, and many Nigerians, have hopes in the future of our country.

Citizens have started demanding accountability from their leaders and considering the past decades, Nigeria’s democracy is relatively stable now.

Without a doubt, our hopes for a better future shall be rewarded.

Nigeria, my homeland, will rise.

I am calling on the strong, focused, and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside religion or ethnic differences and join hands to build a better Nigeria that we can be proud of. I believe Nigeria will rise to its ordained position, but it can only be possible when we start asking our leaders to account for all monies that have entered their hands and remove every bad leader anytime it is election time. we should not allow political stipend to blindfold us into doing the needful in this country.

As an International Student in America, going back home to your country can be quite hard; due to the expenses that come with it. This summer I was opportune and blessed to return back to my motherland. There are 36 states in Nigeria, I visited only my home state, Lagos. Lagos is the business capital of Nigeria. It is the New York of Nigeria. The main reason I went back home was to surprise my mother on her birthday and it was definitely worth the expense. Memories were created to last a lifetime. That was my main reason for coming back, but as soon as I was back, I found many other reasons why I love and have missed my beloved country, Nigeria. Nigeria is a country blessed with so many natural resources and beautiful and talent individuals. I am so proud to be called Nigerian and I want the world to know how special and beautiful my country is. There are so many bad stereotypes about Nigeria. I feel like it is my duty as a Nigerian to portray my country in a good light. These are my reasons why I love and miss Nigeria.

1. Family and friends.

This is probably the first and most important reason for missing and loving my country. Going back home gave me the opportunity to see my beloved family physically again. Family time is very important in one's life. I saw all my cousins, uncles, aunts, Grandaunts and My immediate family. I got to also see all my childhood friends that I have grown a strong bond with. Going back home, made me realize that in life, we are all on a journey and so matter how far we go in that journey, we should never forget those that made that journey begin.

2. The History

Nigeria is a country blessed with so much history. Although the country gained its independence from Britain in 1960 , Nigeria was formed in 1914. So it has a lot of interesting history attached to it. I'm privileged to stay in an estate that was the reasons why Nigeria was formed. I stay in a house where the colonial masters stayed in and my house is over 80 years old. I also got to a explore a museum at Railway Compound, Lagos, Nigeria called the Jaekel House; this museum is over 120 years old and has a lot of rich history attached to it.

3. The Food

OH! The food. I have missed Nigeria delicacies so much. Staying in a place like Cleveland, Tennessee, it is easier to find a needle in a haystack than to find an African food market. The first thing I did after I got down from the plane was to order one of the various Nigerian food options that were available. Nigerian food does not just satisfy your want for food but it satisfies the soul. I love Nigerian food!!

4. The People

Nigerians are one of the most unique, talented and intelligent people i have ever come across (no bias), Nigerians despite the economy and the several issues we have going on, we are one of the most happiest people on earth. We know how to change a thing of sorrow into a thing of joy. We are the future of the world and we are going to take over the world with our talents. We are talented in music, in art, in technology, in comedy and much more. Mark Zuckerberg recently came to Lagos, Nigeria and said the same thing. Watch out for us because we are coming.

5. We are rich in culture and Art

Nigeria is one the most diverse countries you would ever come across. Nigeria has three major ethnic groups (Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa); which are further divided into over 521 languages and over 1150 dialects and ethnic groups. Each language comes with its own culture and practices. So no, there is no language like Nigerian, and we do not all speak the same language. The main Language is English. This diversity in Nigeria makes us very rich in culture and we showcase through different Art and culture showcases.

6. Alone time for relaxation.

Being able to go back home, I finally had time for myself, time away from school and noise. A time to reflect and think about my life and plan on how to improve myself all around. The beautiful weather made the relaxation easier, with all the breeze and leaves blowing and signing to me. My home was a beautiful place to recoup.

If Nigeria is not already on your bucket list of places to travel, then I think you should look at the list again. Nigeria is where the future is going to be built. It is going shine when it must shine, shine brighter than any other nation. There are so much more reasons why I love and miss Nigeria but these are top six reasons why I really missed home.

Thank you for showing me my true strength. Not only physical strength, but more importantly mental strength. You've shown me that I am more than what others may think of me, and that I can rise above any obstacle that comes through my path.

Thank you for helping me to walk through life with grace and passion. To love what I do and love the life that I share with those around me. Before experiencing yoga, I never truly understood what it was like to be passionate about something. Now that I have, not only do I know what it's like to be passionate, but also have a willing to be passionate.

Thank you for teaching me what it is like to appreciate the small things in life. Which has only helped me more to appreciate the big things. You've shown me to not only appreciate the life around me, but also to give myself the appreciation that I deserve. And more importantly, give others the appreciation that they deserve.

Thank you for allowing me to let go. Whenever I feel as if I need a break from the world, the yoga studio is the first place I think of. As soon as I enter the studio, the outside world leaves my mind. You've allowed me an escape that I will be forever thankful for.

Thank you for turning me into a mindful person. Having mindfulness is harder than it seems, especially here in today's society. Over the past couple years, I have become more mindful to the world around me, I have been able to truly be myself and let everyone else be themselves -- all thanks to yoga.

And lastly, thank you for allowing me to breathe. As simple as it sounds, breathing is the one thing that I carry around most with me off the mat. Deep breaths are what get me through the day. Throughout tough situations, emotional battles, and stressful times, I always know to come back to my yoga, to come back to my breath.

I only hope that those around me feel the same way as I do about you, yoga. You have truly transformed my life in the best way imaginable. It is a gift and a great privilege to be able to experience the practice. What happened in the beginning, and how the heavens were set in motion..

Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.

The Norse cosmos began with two worlds, Niflheim and Muspellheim. These two worlds, the worlds of primordial cold and fire , were separated by a great fissure called Ginnungagap. The waters from the well Hvergelmir, at the center of Niflheim, by many rivers flowed into Ginnungagap and "when those rivers, which are called Elivagar, came so far from their source, the poisonous flow hardened like a slag of cinders running from a furnace, and became ice. ...Then layer by layer, the ice grew within Ginnungagap" (Byock 13). The northernmost regions of the gap filled with hoar frost and rime, but the southernmost were "the regions bordering on Muspell [and] were warm and bright" (Byock 13). Where the cold of Niflheim's ice and the warmth of Muspellheim's fire met in Ginnungagap the ice thawed, and "there was a quickening in these flowing drops and life sprang up" (Byock 14). From the ice came Ymir, known as Aurgelmir by the giants, the origin of all frost giants. As the wise giant Vafthruthnir says, "'down from Elivagar did venom drop, / And waxed till a giant it was; / And thence arose our giants' race, / And thus so fierce are we found'" (Bellows 76-77).

Appreciation for some of life's most discredited pleasures..

Life is full of many wonderful pleasures that many of us, like myself, often forget about. And it's important to recognize that even on bad days, good things still happen. Focusing on these positive aspects of our day-to-day lives can really change a person's perspective. So in thinking about the little things that make so many of us happy , I've here's a list of some of the best things that often go unrecognized and deserve more appreciation:

Summer is hot and humid, and it's almost like summer was made specifically to drink the refreshing, cold, crisp wonderful, delicious, nutritious nectar of the gods. Which is none other than beer; wonderful cold beer. With summer playing peek-a-boo around the corner while we finish up this semester, it's time to discuss the only important part of summer. And if you haven't already guessed, it's beer. There are few things I take more seriously than my beer, in order are: sports ... and beer. Here are my favorite summer brews:

This summer shandy begins this list, it's a mix of lemon, lime and orange. While this is by no means a craft beer, it still has it place as a refreshing summer brew to enjoy.

This aptly depicts our beloved country Nigeria. Those that fall under the former categorization have even mouthed the need for a revolution. I was convinced that revolution was impossible in these times; given the strengthened nature of the modern State and its instruments of coercion. But the Jasmine Revolution propelled from Tunisia has dispelled such notion. Agreed the spring in the Arab Africa got impetus from the homogeneous nature of these states; in Nigeria it a nullity to envision such for reasons too obvious.  I am not a sage-but nevertheless trust me! In as much as we cannot tread this path, nor the erstwhile Soviet Union’s trajectory; and given our shared experience with the Americans, We as a people should pronounce and accentuate the positives of our shared experiences. Our country, my country, your country has a chequered history replete cite-able instances to buttress. Yes our leaders have under- performed.    Yes without doubt our elites have collectively failed. Among them we have children of the very poor. Of course there are the very few from prosperous families. But the bulk of them are from indigent backgrounds. By this I do not mean to disparage or offend sensibilities but to sound-out that they should have done better given their backgrounds. They ascended on the magnanimity of a functional system; but regrettably, once they become ensconced in their new found status-what did they do? They removed the leader! And made it an exclusive preserve to which they alone have the prerogative. They crippled a vibrant system that prodded them up. Their children now school abroad, they now hospital abroad – a collective shame, we need to bring them to their past – a beneficial past they have destroyed – out of a non-strategy. Our resolve therefore should be that our elite needs to reconnect to their roots more, they need to re-strategize from their negative intent. They cannot live in isolation, despite their pretences; they are from these climes and must live by the dictate of the circumstance rather than those they have crafted. In this malaise, we also have a culpable followership, what we have done as the lower rung reeks of unforgiveable acquiesce. We cheer at an opportunity of a meet. We must stand resolute without being overtly abusive of doing the right thing. We should not be the rented crowd when that need arises. When we consceintize our self adequately, then can we begin to look forward to the Senegal, Cote’ d’Ivoire, and Ghana, recent political experiences. An incumbent and a ruling party can lose an election based on the people’s conviction. We need to embrace citizen advocacy in it varied forms. This will bring about the much chorused “bottom up approach” in policy formulations.  For instance Nigeria has a pool of talented writers. But like my teacher once told me nobody can write the perfect essay. What am I trying to say? We should not be intimidated by these array- we the reading public- yes we can express an opinion- we must therefore not be restricted by our seeming handicap- we must express ourselves to be heard- this shall form the kernel of our advocacy! If the elite refuse to don their thinking cap, we must help them and if the followership does same – it becomes more difficult- but we must also help them. Now our centenary is nigh – come 14 January 2014, we would be a100 years together as a people.  a 100year old amalgamation. No use elucidating on this I assume we all know. The Lugardian contraption however our opinion – has lasted a century! And there is no way you will talk about Nigerian Centenary without mentioning Lord Lugard. It is inevitable, agreed we are variously sentimentalize by the outcomes – but we must not overlook the strategy that brought it about- yes strategy – the Brits wanted an administrative convenience and learning from the financial implication of their experience in Senegambia – they did not want to administer such a large area separately…so we have  Nigeria..Our beloved country! Nigerian writer Ayọbámi Adébáyo on the moment she connected with her homeland

In an exclusive extract from her new essay, the writer shares the first moment of connection with her beloved country

Published today, 'Of This Our Country' is a powerful new collection of essays from some of Nigeria's most celebrated writers. Their personal stories, memories and thoughts on the joys, pains and complexities of Nigeria are a diverse blend of those who have been born and raised in the country and those who have lived their lives abroad and developed their own particular relationship with the land of their parents.

Here, the acclaimed writer Ayọbámi Adébáyo shares an extract from her own inclusion within the collection, 'Clarion Calls,' which details her early understanding of patriotism and what it meant to pledge allegiance to a land you are only just beginning to understand.

"In primary school, I learn to sing the national anthem before I know the right words. Instead of ‘Arise o compatriots’, I chant ‘Arise o compassions’ with a mix of abandon and confidence that I will leave behind in childhood. Even when I know the right lyrics, they remain opaque to me, revealing nothing of the ideas and imperatives they are meant to conjure. The words are abstractions to me until the day my father sticks branches in front of his car so he can get me to school.

Of This Our Country

This incidence happens after the 1993 elections are annulled. I know the annulment is some grave injustice from listening to my parents and their friends rage about it. Clusters of protesters have been gathering in the streets, increasing in number daily. My parents have stocked the pantry with food, matches and salt. Clouds are gathering but the sky has not darkened yet. Certain the downpour is still days or weeks away, my father ferries me to school as he has always done. On this morning though, our route has been totally blocked. There are old tires in the middle of the road. Logs of wood and metal drums have been arranged into a makeshift obstacle course. Behind those, the clusters of the last few days have congregated into a crowd that blocks our access.

My father parks the car and, like other motorists around us, he leaves the vehicle to find some form of vegetation. In this situation, any branch would do as an olive branch, but some marker of solidarity is required before a vehicle is let through. I watch the protesters through the windshield of my father’s blue Santana and have the sense that these people are the ones I have been singing about all this time. They are compatriots arising to obey a call I could not quite piece together from listening to my parents’ complaints about the military regime. As I watch them wave their placards, I become sure of two things. Not only have these men and women somehow eavesdropped on the angry complaints my parents share with their friends, they understand every word and are going to do something about each discontent.

I learn to sing the national anthem before I know the right words

Transfixed by the crowd ahead, I don’t notice how much time passes before my father returns with several branches. He sticks them all in front of the car and begins to drive again, inching the Santana forward until I can see those protesting up close. Suddenly, the national anthem’s abstractions have crystallised into something I could touch if I try. They wave my father through when they see I am wearing a school uniform and I am deflated as we leave them behind. It is the first time Nigeria means anything tangible to me, the first time I feel a surge of affection towards this thing I’ve claimed as mine daily on the school lawn: I pledge to Nigeria my country…."

My country Nigeria got her independence from the British in the year 1960. The name Nigeria was given by Mrs. Flora Shaw. Whenever I look at the green white green flag waving big and proud in the breeze my heart swells near to bursting and a tear forms in my eyes from thinking of al that it represents Freedom Glory, tradition for this land, the greatest in mother Africa. As a boy growing up in Jos, I always have a profound sense of honor and pride deep in my soul when every morning lined up in my school’s assembly around I stand to sing the national anthem and then recite those famous words. I can’t help but love Nigeria for reasons too numerous to mention. Nigeria is richly blessed with natural and human resources which if judiciously harnessed would shoot us to the top of the world economy. We have crude oil, iron, coal etc. Talking about human resources, Nigerians are very creative and innovative . Nigeria is one of the most populated counties in Africa and that is why we are regarded as the giant of Africa.

Throughout our chequered political history from independence, we have been through thick and thin but each time have overcame. Our electoral process has tremendously improved. This can be seen in the last elections conducted in the country. Absence of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis. Hurricanes is yet another reason why I love my country. We are all privy to what happened in Haiti and recently Japan. The aftermaths are beyond the scope of this write up. Nigeria is a country who holds her social norms to a very high esteem and that is why she kicks against some unusual oriental behaviors like gay marriage and so on.

There is a high level of cooperation for instance, our President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a Christian while his vice Dr. Namadi Sambo is a Muslim. How wonderful. Nigeria is a tourist attraction resort. Tourists from different countries ball over the world come to places like Idanre Hills in Idanre, Osun State, the Obudu cattle ranch and so many other places in Nigeria for fun, sightseeing, tourism and so on. Nigeria is a country with different cultural diversities. The culture of those in the eastern part of the country is different from that of the people in the Northern and Western part of the country making this country a very enjoyable place to be. Finally. One line of national anthem says “The labor of our heroes past shall never be in vain” so let us fight to finish to ensure that we realize the dreams of our founding factors. I love Nigeria and I’m proud to be a Nigerian.

COMPOSITION: My Country

The name of my country is Nigeria. It has a population of about One fifty million according to the last population censor. This figure make it the most populous country in the continent of Africa. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria declared its independence from Great Britain.

Nigeria is the West of Africa. It is a country with about thirty ethnic groups.  Her official language is English.  The most populous and politically influential are the Fulani’s.  There are thirty six state in Nigeria and the capital of Nigeria is Abuja. Nigeria is partitioned into several region. The two Major regions are the north and south .Nigeria shared land borders with Beni, Cameroun and Chad.  The capital of my country is called Abuja.

The Popular crude oil called petroleum generate billions of dollars in revenue for the government.  Nigeria is a member of Organization of Gold Exporting Country (OPEC). Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of my country. Only a few of the citizens engage in gold mining and white collar jobs.

Having being ruled by several presidents, the federal Republic if Nigeria has not yet got to where it ought to be. President Muhammed Buhari, the current president, is however trying his best to make Nigeria a very great nation. I however look forward to a great Nigeria full of opportunities and very peaceful.

Descriptive Essay: My Beloved Country

My country, the United States of America, or ‘The Land of the Free’ as I like to call it, has come a long way since 1607. Significant events like the American Revolution, Declaration of independence and the issue of slavery have shaped my country into what it is today – a land for everyone. By the way, it may sound interesting that the Declaration of Independence was actually written on hemp paper.

America is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of area and occupies the third spot in terms of population. Although America has no official language at the national level, 80% of its population aged five years or more speaks only English at home. Spanish is the second most common language and is also the language that is most widely taught as a second language.

Since it is a land of great opportunities, there is a large immigrant population from many countries that has settled here making it one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. Despite this diversity in terms of culture, sect, and religion, America is a peaceful place with something for everybody. All people have the right to be hard in court and differences are normally settled peacefully using existing laws.

America has 50 states that combine to form the federal union. The US operates under a two party system, the Democrats and the Republicans. It is a capitalist economy that is fueled by abundance of natural resources. US is the largest importer of goods in the world while in terms of the amount of goods exported, it occupies the second spot.

We boast a number of great scientists that have changed the way we live. From Graham Bell’s invention of telephone to Thomas Edison’s first light bulb, Americans have been the frontrunners when it comes to technological innovation. We also have America to thank for the internet. It first started as ARPANET and was a project of the US defense department. However, it has evolved with time, and today, nearly every household has access to the internet making the world a global village.

When it comes to quality education, America is the most popular choice in the world. The US spends more on education per student than any other country in the world. Its institutes of higher education have an esteemed place among universities in the world. Every year, America attracts a crop of the most intelligent students from around the world with different scholarship programs.

America is a free country. It does not discriminate among people. If we were not free, our ignorance would cause us to hate or destroy the each other. Even though Christianity is the religion practiced by the majority of the population, there is no discrimination based on religion. My country has given me the tolerance to mix with other cultures and the courage to stand up for my rights. Surely, there is a long list of why I love my country, and will continue to do so until I take my last breath.

I rarely knew our next door neighbour, Makcik Siti and the one opposite us, Aunty Meena. Even Mom seldom talks to them. Then, on 20th March 2020, two days after we were all told to stay home to stay safe, due to Covid-19 pandemic, Makcik Siti rang our door bell. I rushed, peeped and even hesitated to open the door for her. "Mom, guess it’s our neighbour". Mom hesitated too and replied that she would attend to the door herself.

Standing beside Mom, the moment our door was opened, sweet fragrance of kuih  (local term for sweet cake) activated my salivary glands. "Mrs Lim, Bingka Jagung for you and family", said Makcik Siti as she greeted Mom with smiles that automatically replicated on me too.

Almost six months now from that ice-breaker of Bingka Jagung (local corn sweet cake), Mom, Grandma and I have been frequently patronizing Makcik Siti’s home learning to make sweet treats for our high tea sessions that takes place either at our home or at Aunty Meena’s home. It took the horrifying, monstrous Covid-19 pandemic to beat the five long years of staying together under one same roof at our apartments’ block with less than 2 metres walk away to greet our neighbours. Covid-19 witnessed the unity of multiracial communities coming together in healing, supporting and encouraging each other in Malaysia’s amazing ways.

In my eight years of living with grandma, never had I spend so much great times watching, discussing and interpreting news with my grandma. As devilish Covid-19 can be with recently new mutated versions, I could only thank Covid-19 when Aunty Meena helped to buy things for Grandma during the absence of my parents and Makcik Siti’s daughter helped me with my Malay language studies conducted over Google classroom. Festive seasons of different races came and passed as all sacrificed celebrations observing social distancing and reduced travelling.

Then, I saw many promotions of unknown tourist attractions in Malaysia that I was unaware as I spent time browsing newspapers with my father. Luxury Banjaran Hotel in midst of a cave, highly powered theme parks at Genting Highlands, serene paddy fields at Agong Village in Penang and many more UNESCO heritage tourist attractions. Beaches with mesmerizing under sea treasures of corals and lives in Pulau Redang, Lang Tengah and many more were healed during tourist absence and now welcoming humans once more offering its flattering, attractive holiday experience. Many working adults are together in television’s commercials reminding new norms’ practices, appreciating front liners despite any race or origins and only call themselves; MALAYSIAN and not as respective ethnicity.

My classmate, a lovely Indian girl; Nagasri gave me a hand sewn Batik  (local art of fabric print) mask and constantly reminds me to wear it during school.

Uniqueness of MALAYSIA is invaluable rooting from laughs we share with our neighbours, exchanging each other recipes in cooking, growing into serving each other despite of any background or race and ends sweetly with us calling ourselves a MALAYSIAN.

It opens the eyes to the common values we share in our community whichever background or race we come from.
