Students learn math best when they approach the subject as something they enjoy. Speed pressure, timed testing and blind memorization pose high hurdles in the pursuit of math, according to Jo Boaler, professor of mathematics education  at Stanford Graduate School of Education and lead author on a new working paper called "Fluency Without Fear."

"There is a common and damaging misconception in mathematics – the idea that strong math students are fast math students," said Boaler, also cofounder of YouCubed at Stanford, which aims to inspire and empower math educators by making accessible in the most practical way the latest research on math learning.

Fortunately, said Boaler , the new national curriculum standards known as the Common Core Standards for K-12 schools de-emphasize the rote memorization of math facts. Maths facts are fundamental assumptions about math, such as the times tables (2 x 2 = 4), for example. Still, the expectation of rote memorization continues in classrooms and households across the United States.

While research shows that knowledge of math facts is important, Boaler said the best way for students to know math facts is by using them regularly and developing understanding of numerical relations. Memorization, speed and test pressure can be damaging, she added.

Number sense is critical

On the other hand, people with "number sense" are those who can use numbers flexibly, she said. For example, when asked to solve the problem of 7 x 8, someone with number sense may have memorized 56, but they would also be able to use a strategy such as working out 10 x 7 and subtracting two 7s (70-14).

"They would not have to rely on a distant memory," Boaler wrote in the paper.

In fact, in one research project the investigators found that the high-achieving students actually used number sense, rather than rote memory, and the low-achieving students did not.

The conclusion was that the low achievers are often low achievers not because they know less but because they don't use numbers flexibly.

"They have been set on the wrong path, often from an early age, of trying to memorize methods instead of interacting with numbers flexibly," she wrote. Number sense is the foundation for all higher-level mathematics, she noted.

Role of the brain

Boaler said that some students will be slower when memorizing, but still possess exceptional mathematics potential.

"Math facts are a very small part of mathematics, but unfortunately students who don't memorize math facts well often come to believe that they can never be successful with math and turn away from the subject," she said.

Prior research found that students who memorized more easily were not higher achieving – in fact, they did not have what the researchers described as more "math ability" or higher IQ scores. Using an MRI scanner, the only brain differences the researchers found were in a brain region called the hippocampus, which is the area in the brain responsible for memorizing facts – the working memory section.

But according to Boaler, when students are stressed – such as when they are solving math questions under time pressure – the working memory becomes blocked and the students cannot as easily recall the math facts they had previously studied. This particularly occurs among higher achieving students and female students, she said.

Some estimates suggest that at least a third of students experience extreme stress or "math anxiety" when they take a timed test, no matter their level of achievement. "When we put students through this anxiety-provoking experience, we lose students from mathematics," she said.

Math treated differently

Boaler contrasts the common approach to teaching math with that of teaching English. In English, a student reads and understands novels or poetry, without needing to memorize the meanings of words through testing. They learn words by using them in many different situations – talking, reading and writing.

"No English student would say or think that learning about English is about the fast memorization and fast recall of words," she added.

Strategies, activities

In the paper, coauthored by Cathy Williams, cofounder of YouCubed, and Amanda Confer, a Stanford graduate student in education, the scholars provide activities for teachers and parents that help students learn math facts at the same time as developing number sense. These include number talks, addition and multiplication activities, and math cards.

Importantly, Boaler said, these activities include a focus on the visual representation of number facts. When students connect visual and symbolic representations of numbers, they are using different pathways in the brain, which deepens their learning, as shown by recent brain research.

"Math fluency" is often misinterpreted, with an over-emphasis on speed and memorization, she said. "I work with a lot of mathematicians, and one thing I notice about them is that they are not particularly fast with numbers; in fact some of them are rather slow. This is not a bad thing; they are slow because they think deeply and carefully about mathematics."

She quotes the famous French mathematician, Laurent Schwartz. He wrote in his autobiography that he often felt stupid in school, as he was one of the slowest math thinkers in class.

Math anxiety and fear play a big role in students dropping out of mathematics, said Boaler.

"When we emphasize memorization and testing in the name of fluency we are harming children, we are risking the future of our ever-quantitative society and we are threatening the discipline of mathematics," she said. "We have the research knowledge we need to change this and to enable all children to be powerful mathematics learners. Now is the time to use it."

The Shortest Papers Ever Published

This blog post is about short papers. It seems out of place writing a long introduction.

If you ever wondered about the shortest papers ever published, or you just want to take the unique opportunity to read several papers in full within one minute, this post is for you.

Math can be short

Math can be hard and tedious resulting in very long papers. The 1995 proof of Fermat’s last Theorem was 108 pages long.

But math can also be short.

Lander and Parkin’s paper about a conjecture by Euler (related to Fermat’s last Theorem), is probably the dream of everyone ever written a paper: It answers an interesting and important question, it’s correct beyond any doubt,  it’s easy to understand and only two sentences long.

A short mathematical proof by a counterexample

Is there a way to beat that? John Conway and Alexander Soifer submitted a paper in 2005 with the goal to  write the shortest math paper ever.

It is only two words long and contains two distinct proofs of their problem in two figures.

The editors were a bit surprised: “The Monthly publishes exposition of mathematics at many levels, and it contains articles both long and short. Your article, however, is a bit too short to be a good Monthly article. . . A line or two of explanation would really help.”

The authors did not give up and could convince the editors: “I respectfully disagree […] What else is there to explain?” Read the full story .

Can you  write a meaningful paper shorter than 2 words? Probably not. Still, I want to mention the following case report of severe writer’s block, which contribute important zero words to the literature:

The shortest paper ever?

Also the following zero-word paper (excluding the abstract) makes an important point. Originally submitted to Nature Chemistry it did not make the cut for publication. But the editors liked it so much that they covered it in their blog  and their production team produced a print PDF for it. It finally appeared in 2016  in the journal “ Chemie in unserer Zeit ” (50(2), 144–145)  published by Wiley. It’s a German journal but don’t worry. The empty pages should be easy to read even in German…

I've recently started learning small chunks of various important topics (e.g. Fourier Transform, PDEs, Vector Analysis), after I felt somewhat disappointed that I've never learned them in university courses (yet).

So I was wondering: What are some classic papers (or something similar) that give a great introduction and overview of what an important topic of mathematics is about? I think it should be around 15-50 pages (?) to give a solid overview and explanation.

How do you get good at reading research papers with lots of proofs?

To get good at math proofs (and thinking math), do you have to first memorize all the different proof tricks, or is there a way to learn as you go?

I am a software developer and have recently decided I want to start learning math. I have been running into a road block for the past year or so because I can't understand all of the equations in research papers describing their different algorithms (Conditional Random Fields, Markov Logic Networks, Probability Theory, Graphical Models, ..., for machine learning, natural language processing and all that).

All of it is basically standard equations such as those for Bayes Theorem, Markov Chains, CRFs, etc., or something using propositional logic like the Markov Logic Networks, or novel theorems derived from one of these.

Looking over lots of other questions on this site, it's clear that I just need to get good at proofs, and understanding how to think mathematically / logically. I bought the book How to Prove It , and will get the other one How to Solve It soon.

My issue is, I've been studying this stuff every day for the past few weeks, and I don't feel like I am any better than when I started. In contrast, when I started learning to code, I was able to quickly get the hang of it and learn rapidly, mostly by studying other peoples code and trying to build my own programs.

I would like to do the same thing for learning math. Instead of just trying to do each exercise in a textbook which is super boring and dull, I would like to read a research paper, and slowly figure out what they are doing, learning what I need to as I run into things I can't figure out. (This is how I learned Markov Chains with no probability or set theory or anything, just had to go back and learn the basics, but at least it was applied which keeps me motivated and excited about learning the basics). I am also watching a bunch of the math lectures on coursera related to research papers I'm interested in, which is helpful.

The problem is, I feel like this isn't working with most math proofs, because there seems to be so many little tricks with all of the proofs that have to be memorized in order to be even the slightest bit effective at reading and understanding new theorems.

My question is, do I just have to sit down and memorize all kinds of these tricks to get good at math proofs, and thinking math, or is there a better way?

These are things like transformations between logical statements using DeMorgan's Law , the Conditional Law , etc. Or, is there a way to slowly pick these up? Like with programming, I can build some really cool stuff without ever having to learn algorithms or low-level computer science stuff; I just need to learn that when I run into a specific problem that requires that skill . With math it seems like the opposite, I have to first memorize a seemingly infinite number of things before I can even start looking at the research papers. Is there a more effective strategy?

Put another way, I can understand something in math (like DeMorgan's Law ), but I can't make it stick. The reason is (I think) because I am not applying it in any real way (like to implementing something a research paper is talking about), so I never fully get it at an intuitive level (the same way that knowing by reading is different than knowing by doing). How do I get it at an intuitive level without having to just memorize these basics like DeMorgan's Law ?

  • $\begingroup$ Better to understand than memorize. DeMorgan's Law by name is much less important than understanding that "not (A and B)" is the same as "(not A) or (not B)$. Research papers are not the best way to learn mathematics, because they assume so much knowledge.   • $\begingroup$ I guess what it is is that, if there is something complicated in programming, then if I start playing with it, I can start to see how each tiny piece works, which leads quickly to understanding the flow of everything and how it all works. Mathematics, as you know, is an extremely broad subject with lots of different subfields to specialize in. Each branch of math is a life's work in itself. There's no real trick to understanding research papers - it's just time and effort devoted to understanding a field of math. So if you want to be able to understand research papers, I recommend you first try to understand research papers in one specific area by studying it intensely and reading books about it.

I faced this same problem. As a high school junior very eager to start math research, I started by tackling the hardest books at my disposal - Spivak's Calculus on Manifolds , Serre's A Course in Arithmetic , etc. These books were even recommended to me by a professor! But as I read them and pretended to understand them in periodic meetings I had with my mentor, I began to grow greatly discouraged, thinking that I'd never be able to understand these papers. For instance, in A Course in Arithmetic , I couldn't even read through the first page without having to look up terms that I never learned because I had never taken a formal class in algebra, like the characteristic of a finite field. I began to believe that math wasn't what I wanted to do with my life anymore.

But my feelings changed when my mentor referred me to a professor, and I enrolled in his 300-level undergraduate math class in number theory. Though it's a bit simple, it really fortified my foundations in proof-writing, and I'm becoming more familiar with concepts that I needed to read works like Serre's - I feel like I'm definitely making more progress than when I tackled math papers cold-turkey. Unlike before, I feel like I'm fast on-track to being able to understand the math papers that so discouraged me.

So my point is: start with what you understand, namely books and papers that are simpler, and if possible, enroll in a proof-based math class. Even if you consider such material too easy, it'll help for later, and you'll pick up the techniques of proofs on the way.

Also, if you're really intent on understanding research, pick one specific field to do so, and study it intensely from the ground up.

IB Math SL Internal Assessment (IA) Example Topics

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program , or IBDP for short, is the most common alternative to an upper-level highschool education to an AP class. It is not only challenging, but also highly recognized for college admissions around the world, making its rigor and academic difficulty worthwhile. 

One of the best parts about the IBDP is that the program takes a holistic approach to schooling, as opposed to a system solely based on examinations. An important component of this is the internal assessment (IA). An IA is any component of IB that is internally graded (i.e not graded by IB). Usually the biggest one of these is a research-based essay, often called an investigation at most schools, that will allow students to take concepts learned in their 6 classes, and write a university-level paper to showcase their extents to learn above the required amount. In this blog, we will be talking about the IA for IB Math SL, one of IB’s most popular courses. 

The IA is more simple than it sounds. Any piece of work that is internally graded at your school, be it oral, a presentation, or any form for media, is considered an IA. An externally graded assessment such as the official examinations at the end of the two-year program, is an external assessment. Understanding this difference is important to better prepare for your numerous IAs. 

Most schools will require students to submit research papers for an IA on top of presentations and other mediums, with this research paper constituting a bulk of the IA portion of the total grade. This research paper is often intended to be investigative in nature, allowing the student to question a concept and use this curiosity to show higher-level thinking.

In the case of IB Math SL , most students will take concepts taught in class and find practical ways to use these concepts in real life. This allows students to prove understanding of a concept and its uses. 

You might be struggling with getting started on your IB Math IA, but don’t worry because this is very common. Most students struggle to come up with original ideas that are interesting and enjoyable to do. Hopefully the following ideas can provide some inspiration for your IAs. 

IA Idea 1 – Birthday Paradox 

The idea tackles the paradoxical concept of how probability dictates that those in a room full of people are very likely to share a birthday.

This idea uses concepts from probability and data coursework in Math SL. While solving the paradox would be nothing new, perhaps taking the information and applying it into other mathematical concepts, or testing the data with a sample population of people would be an interesting direction to take. Presentation of the data is as important too – powerpoints are the go to method, so try something new! Maybe you could develop a simple application to showcase the paradox in the form of a game. The possibilities are endless, and just goes to show how creative you can be with the IA.

IA Idea 2 – Modeling Statistics

Modeling IAs can generally refer to any project where a certain change in statistics is being presented in a visual manner. One example is modeling the radioactive decay of chernobyl, and determining if conditions are suitable for living. Another example can be modeling the population of a country and determining the time left until the area is deemed overpopulated. 

Modeling is in itself an easy task but trying to make the information digestible and interesting is the hard part.

IA Idea 3 – Analyzing the Math of Monopoly

A fun IA idea could be analyzing the probability and statistics behind the game Monopoly! Is there a certain strategy to win or is the game luck-based? Try collecting data on how the game behaves based on numerous trials, conveniently collected through playing the game with friends! Maybe you find that the game isn’t so based on luck, and probability shows a consistent and reliable tactic to win? This concept can be done with almost any board game, making the application of the idea boundless!

This IA idea brings the fun into Mathematics SL, and would be as fun to write a report on!

The IA is internally scored, meaning the IB isn’t responsible for any grade associated with your IA assignments. Your teachers however, are heavily associated with the process of creating your IAs for all your classes. They are the ones responsible for your IA grades, so it’s always best to refer to your teacher and request any sort of rubric that you could work with! 

Each class will require a different method of grading IAs. For example, a practical science like Chemistry HL would need a more investigative approach in an IA through the scientific method as compared to an IA in Spanish SL. This means you must face each IA with a different mindset!

The IAs in Math SL make a little more than 10% of the total grade, which is a sizable chunk! You should aim to take advantage of this, because the IAs are definitely scored more leniently than the examinations and other external assessments. This 10% can be the difference between a 6 and 7 in the final grade of the class!

Don’t Overdo It

While the IAs are important, they are not intended to be as massive of a research project as the extended essay (EE), the most important piece of research work you’ll be doing as an IB student. If you find that an IA takes up time from working on your EE, you should change the IA topic to make it easier. The EE is worth much more than the IA, to the point where failing the EE immediately disqualifies a student from gaining the diploma!

Save a Great Idea

If you notice your IA idea is too difficult for the scope of an IA, then maybe it could make a great EE idea. Perhaps with more fleshing out, you could create a great EE topic, which would be beneficial in making it easier to get the diploma!

Make it Interesting

The IAs are a great opportunity to be more fun and creative compared to other projects that require more serious tones and formats. Create media and forms of presentations that are enjoyable and fun! 

The IAs have no direct effects on your chances of admissions, but they do help you become a more holistic student, a quality that schools find attractive.
