Design Process of a Campus Plan: A Case Study of Duzce University Konuralp Campus

Humanity have always felt the need to alter the environment they inhabit. In our modern era, this desire continues to exhibit itself in more urban landscapes. As a microcosm of the cityscape, university campuses contribute many cultural and economic advantages to the urban population. Moreover they bring under control to the urban growth and generally provides open and green spaces to the city. In this paper, Düzce University Konuralp Campus, located north of the Düzce City, was considered as our study area. Here we describe the Konuralp campus design which was developed in "Duzce University Konuralp Campus Development Plan Urban Design Competition". The method of the study consist of three steps. Some analyses like location, topography (ecological wind corridors and the meeting point of the valleys), spatial zoning, design axes and circulation were performed at the first step. In the second step it has been tried to specify how to apply the steps for designing kind of these campus projects. The concept of the design was created and constructed for the project. In the last step the design was visualized with 3D aplications and presented here. The aim of the study is how to design a campus which is sustainable and accessible. Consequently, the campus design was realized which had some design principles based on pedestrian priority. Educational buildings were separated from social buildings, sports center and cultural centers by using a-pedestrian walkways. In the middle of the working area campus square was designed which contains some land uses such as ceremony area, student center, amphitheatre and library. Finally a sustainable and accessible campus design was developed for Duzce University.

Education should be an equal distance with everyone, the educational environment as a second lecturer is responsible for supporting equality and should present inclusive characteristics. This study is carried out to evaluate Duzce University Art, Design and Architecture Faculty within the context of universal design principles. This study evaluates the existing condition of the campus facilities regarding universal design and searches for possible design interventions to improve inclusivity. At first, within this context, the relation between the physical environment and campus users is examined via video recording and observation studies. Analysis of the findings of the observation and video recordings revealed the interaction pattern between the physical environment and users. With the help of analysis, places requiring universal design solutions are identified and classified according to their priority. Within the classified problem areas, problem areas suitable for increasing inclusivity by small scale design interventions are determined, and initial design ideas are constituted for them. The capability of design interventions in increasing the inclusivity of educational environments is exposed, and the importance of a holistic approach in the educational system for inclusivity is emphasized. As a result, it is revealed that it is possible to improve equality and the participation level of diverse user groups in educational life only by actualizing small-scaled universal design interventions. While showcasing the potency of the universal design applications in an educational setting, this study underlines the importance of conjoint actions of every actor in the educational system.

The primary aim of this study is to develop performance evaluation and design guidelines for the design of university outdoor campus spaces that take into account the needs and desires of students with disabilities (SWDs). Constant performance evaluations of outdoor campus spaces are important in advancing spatial design for the equitable access of SWDs in campus life. Forming a strong relationship between the individual and his/her lived environment, assessments of accessibility performance dimensions depends fundamentally on the notion of user and spatial aspects. This thesis argues that performance evaluations should not only search for physical accessibility issues, but should also respond to equitable access, and in turn, to the social inclusion of SWDs in university spaces. To achieve the objective of the study, firstly, a case study was carried out to understand the relevant phenomena, involving a systemic approach to observing the experiences of ‘real’ users in an actual campus setting. Secondly, considering the rights of all students related to the campus, a study was made of the design of inclusive campus outdoor environments through the field study and the lens of Lynch’s normative theory (1981) to help explore, scrutinize and contextualize the performance evaluation parameters. A re-reading of Lynch’s performance dimensions from the perspective of equitable access can be considered a valid approach, given their basis on the idea of environmental justice. Thirdly, the Campus Accessibility Evaluation Index (CAEI) is developed with the aid of empirically grounded design parameters in order to test the developed normative framework in the study. The contribution of this dissertation to the body of architectural literature falls under two aspects. First, it proposes a new contextual framework that follows, questions and interprets universal architectural and planning theories within a local context, emphasizing that an in-depth look at a local sample will broaden architectural theories. Second, the thesis raises arguments that aim to close the gap between normative and theoretical design parameters and architectural practice, highlighting that priority should be given to efforts to bridge this gap. The development of the CAEI for application in architectural practice nationwide is the most noteworthy contribution of this thesis, forming a strong relationship between the practical and theoretical aspects. The public sphere of the city where the social relations of the social individuals live intensely has an important role in urban development. In addition to these changing circumstances, new requirements and problems such as the inclusion of these areas arise. It is an approach to raise awareness among university students as the main campus users who will increase and improve the spatial quality in professional life by increasing the awareness of university students who will continue the development of society, communities and cities and by increasing the quality of university campuses and spreading this philosophy within the society. The problem faced by users on university campuses is defined by surveys that enable all users to access campus equipment and develop solutions that enable them to use it as they wish.

In recent times, with the increase in population, land areas that can accommodate the traditional school design model are becoming difficult to come by in urban areas or expensive. Therefore, for urban schools to accommodate the increasing population, school designs have shifted from outward horizontal arrangements to upward vertical designs. Consequently, this study examined the compliance of vertical accessibility components in high-rise buildings in Covenant University, Ota in Nigeria, with universal design strategies, with a view to identifying areas for further improvements, towards contributing to ways of promoting social inclusion in educational environments. The research is a qualitative case study of a tertiary institution that investigated two high-rise buildings on the university campus. An observation guide developed for the study and a digital camera were used to collect primary field data. The data were content analysed and presented using descriptive approach with the aid of texts and pictures. The findings revealed that ramps, steps/staircases and lifts are the vertical accessibility components provided in the high-rise buildings, all of which were found to exhibit various levels of inconsistencies with universal design strategies. One of the key recommendations of the study is to retrofit the buildings with necessary accessible features where they are lacking or inappropriately provided, where possible. The study will be useful to researchers, students, educators, policy makers and building design professionals in addressing issues relating to universal design of the built environment, particularly as it relates to the provision of equitable vertical movement features in high-rise public buildings.

It is essential that public buildings, which have an important place in the whole city and are open to every one's use, designed with the concept of universal design. Universal design; It aims to make standard designs for all groups of people living in a society with different characteristics, regardless of their physiological characteristics, age, gender, social, economic, and educational level. The design and use of public buildings, which are sometimes the city's symbol, sometimes the space that the citizens add color to their lives, and sometimes the facilities where services are received, are essential for the city's identity and the citizens. In this article, the concepts and principles of universal design were defined; the importance of anthropometry and ergonomics in universal design and its historical development were also discussed. As a part of the city, the universal design approach principles have been studied to design accessible, navigable, and accessible buildings together with the city. The legislation having a significant role in shaping the buildings and physical environment has also been discussed and interpreted within this scope. With this study, it has been revealed that “approach to building” (urban level), “circulation within building” (building level), and “reaching services in spaces” (space level) criteria, which are the primary approach criteria of universal design, coincide with the approach introduced in transforming the "user system" into a "building system". Thus, a criteria-based building evaluation form was created to evaluate many public buildings' design following universal design principles. From this point of view, the most used public building of Northern Cyprus has been comprehensively studied. The building's internal organization and its immediate surroundings have been examined and suggestions made within the framework of universal design principles.

Stop or yield? New research supports law change for cyclists

Oregon state university study shows that allowing cyclists to yield at stop signs does not increase danger.

Cycling advocates in British Columbia hope a new U.S. study will boost the case to allow bicyclists to yield at stop signs and safely roll through intersections.

While it's the law in jurisdictions like B.C. for cyclists to stop at stop signs, like every other road user, it's common to see people on two wheels opt for an illegal yield — rolling past the sign after checking it's safe to proceed.

"It makes it a lot more efficient," said Vancouver cyclist Ben Cooper about getting through intersections. "I'm not going to come to a full stop. Like, the amount of energy it takes to stop my entire bike and get it going again — it just doesn't make sense."

The debate over whether rolling stops for cyclists should be enshrined in law has been ongoing since the early 1980s when Idaho first made it legal, resulting in the manoeuvre being named the Idaho stop.

  • Winnipeggers rallying for 'Idaho stop' law that would let cyclists slow roll through stop signs

Several other U.S. states have since followed suit, including B.C.'s Pacific Northwest neighbours of Washington and Oregon. No jurisdiction in Canada has yet adopted laws for rolling stops for bikes.

Cycling advocates in B.C. say they've been pushing the issue for years and hope a new study from researchers at Oregon State University, published this month in an academic transportation journal, will aid their argument.

"It is going at a very slow pace and we need to take dramatic, bold steps that will enable us to reform these outdated laws and have more people … cycling," said Navdeep Chhina, director of campaigns and inclusion with Metro Vancouver's HUB Cycling .

New study supports laws that allow cyclists to yield at stop signs

The Oregon study says  with proper education for both cyclists and drivers, Idaho stops do not lead either riders or motorists to act unsafely.

One of the study's authors said they wanted to look at how well rolling-stop laws work, in a change from other studies that have looked at crash-data analysis and why riders yield at stop signs rather than stop as per the law.

"It required fully connecting two independent simulators, running subjects in pairs simultaneously and having each subject interacting with an avatar of the other in a shared virtual world," said David Hurwitz, a transportation engineering professor,  in a release  about the study.

Researchers observed 60 people paired off who went through 16 virtual interaction scenarios as either a cyclist or motorist, coming together at a four-way-stop intersection.

They found that instead of drivers being aggressive toward cyclists who appeared to be breaking the law by rolling through, driving participants approached intersections either more slowly or at a similar pace after being educated about what bicycle rolling stops were.

Two bicycles travel past each other, going different directions through an intersection.

Cyclists, after also being taught about Idaho stops, preferred to yield rather than stop and went through intersections faster, meaning they spent less time in the intersection exposed to potential danger.

Nearly four out of five crashes involving cyclists in B.C. happen at intersections , according to ICBC.

Hurwitz said the study's findings suggest more work should be done by jurisdictions over the utility of rolling-stop laws.

"This research gives decision-makers information to support prospective legislative policies, set up educational programs and design robust enforcement practices," he said.

  • B.C. sets minimum distance for drivers passing vulnerable road users

B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation is not rejecting the idea that Idaho stops could be made legal, but it said in a statement that more research would be required "to consider how the change would affect the safety of all road users."

In the meantime, it's reminding cyclists to come to a complete stop at a stop sign to ensure safety for the rider and all other road users.
