Hope you are doing well.
We at Dark Horse Media (Mumbai) are a digital marketing agency and primarily work on Bollywood related projects. I came across your blog, which we found very well-thought written and interesting.
We are currently working with Mr Ajay Devgn and managing his social properties, It would be great if you could blog about Mr Ajay Devgn depending on the areas of interest of-course.
Do let me know how we could take this forward.
Thanks, Cherry Khemka
Hi, thanks for commenting, but I’m afraid that’s not possible. If you look more closely at my blog, I write exclusively about pre-70s cinema. Mr Devgn doesn’t fit anywhere there.
Ruk Ruk Ruk, Kahan Chali Deewani ! Koyi Roke ========================================
May be you can watch following fims and post your valued comments
MASHAL (1950) – Ashok Kumar, Sumitra Devi and Ruma Devi Direction: Nitin Bose, Music: S D Burman Producers: Ashok Kumar + Savak Vacha
Good story (though dated), acting and one song: Hanste Huye Chal, Mere Man / Lata
DIL HI TO HAI (1963) – Raj Kapoor, Nutan and Pran (ofcourse) Direction: P L Santoshi + C L Rawal, Music Roshan
Fairly enjoyable film. 1 Great song – Laga Chunri Mein Daag (very nice performance) + few other good songs – Tum Agar Mujh Ko Na Chaho To …
DO USTAD (1959) – Madhubala, Raj Kapoor + Sheikh Mukhtar Direction: Tara Harish Music: O P Nayyar Producer: Qaidi Number 911
Marginal film, songs with lyrics targeted to very low IQ ‘insaans’ and even tunes are run-of-the mill. But 2 – 3 songs are very nice to watch, primarily because of that angel-face

Well your lists does not have any film, starting with Q for Queen and Z for Zebra
Did you watch Sehra(1963)?
great collection of movies. love to see them all
:-) Some aren’t that great, though – as I’ve explained in my reviews of them.
Hey, Dustoff thanks for sharing this. doing great job. i am big fan of bllywood. great collection of movies. love to see them all
A very wide canvas!
Ms Liddle could you kindly consider reviewing Madhubala movie Saiyan (1951).
I watched Saiyyaan a couple of years back, but now I don’t remember why I never got around to reviewing it. An unusual film, I thought: the somewhat tense relationship between the characters of Madhubala and Sajjan was unlike what one usually sees in Hindi cinema. Anupji (at the Mehfil Mein Meri blog) reviewed it some months back, though.
Is there any blog where the movies of the seventies are reviewed?
I suppose so. Try searching for ‘film reviews’ + some names of famous 70s films – you should be able to find blogs that do those. Most Hindi film bloggers who blog about old cinema don’t restrict themselves as I do.
But I think 70’s was the best decade for Hindi Cinema, where it was discovering its new facets, If you could be kind enough to include movies from the 70s as well on this blog
There are several reasons for me not including the 70s in my blog. For me, the 70s marks a watershed in Hindi cinema. There’s a marked difference in film-making styles, in tropes, even in fashions, that separate the 70s from the decades before. And for me, the decades before the 70s are far more interesting (I disagree with you on the 70s being the best decade for Hindi cinema – I’d say the 50s were). I get a lot of satisfaction out of exploring the decades from the 30s through the 60s, so I personally don’t want to venture further as of now.
I’ve published a movie guide based on the reviews and ratings from ‘ “Sarita” magazine under “Chanchal Chhaya” which were the first and most trusted film reviews ever to appear in print media, known for its strict reviews and stringent star ratings, hope you find it useful: https://notionpress.com/read/reviewing-hindi-cinema-since-1945-movie-guide-2020
Thank you for telling me about this, I’ve made a note of it. Will try to read.
Surprised you haven’t reviewed DDLJ yet Madhulika.. I have a lot to discuss on that movie when you do.. 😉
That wouldn’t happen, Harish, because my blog only focusses on cinema from before the 1970s. :-) There are a couple of films here from 1971 or 72, but that’s only because either the film was made before but released later ( Pakeezah, Love in Bombay ) or because it has a strong 60s vibe to it ( Sharmilee ).
Watch “Shatranj Ke Khilari {HD} Satyajit Ray – Sanjeev Kumar – Shabana Azmi Hindi Film (With Eng Subtitles)” on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/A3Fgm0yaWbA?si=75fvmmkOPJmzNEOZ
Oh, you meant Shatranj ke Khiladi . Yes, excellent film. I’ve seen it a couple of times.

The Kerala Story movie review: A poorly-made, poorly-acted rant
The kerala story movie review: when a film shines a light on different aspects of an issue, it creates space for reflection and conversation, and you come away with food for thought. what about a film which does exactly the opposite.
‘The Kerala Story’ comes riding on a raging controversy. The filmmakers, director Sudipto Sen and creative producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, insist that their film is based on the ‘true story of 32,000 young women’ from Kerala who were held captive in ISIS camps on the border of Afghanistan-Turkey-Syria after having been converted to Islam. Those who have been vociferously protesting, and this includes the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have called the film out for being nothing but a clutch of blatant lies, and likened it to hate speech.
In the past week, this figure of ‘32,000’ which was mentioned in the film’s trailer, has been reduced to 3. This changes everything: the makers have practically admitted that their initial figure was highly exaggerated, and to extrapolate its sweeping claim from such a miniscule figure is nothing but gross misrepresentation.
The film itself is nothing but a poorly-made, poorly-acted rant which is not interested in interrogating the social complexities of Kerala, an India state proud of its multi-religious, multi-ethnic identity. All it is intent upon is creating the most simplistic, paper-thin characters to tell us that Kerala is in danger because its innocent, naïve Hindu and Christian girls are being swayed by evil Muslim men, and radicalised to the point of no return.
Bright-eyed Shalini Unnikrishnan (Adah Sharma) fetches up at a nursing college in Kasargod. Of her three roommates, one is Hindu, the other is Christian, and the third, Muslim, the kind of mix so easily to be found in Kerala. Right from the get-go, Asifa (Sonia Balani) starts her mission of brain-washing the other three: girls who wear the hijab are safe from the lecherous eyes of men; other gods are weak; and only Allah can save the ‘kaafirs’ who will otherwise have to face (dozakh) hellfire and damnation. Personable young men whose job is to ensnare and impregnate unsuspecting young women, and crafty maulvis are part of the mix, and within no time at all, Shalini, Nimah (Yogita Bihani) and Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani) have fallen under Asifa’s spell.
An attempt to understand just how presumably educated young women — the literacy levels in Kerala have always proudly been the highest in the country — can become quite so enamoured of an ideology so much at odds with what they’ve grown up believing (or not: one of them is an atheist) would have lent ‘The Kerala Story’ welcome depth. But that’s not the kind of film this is, replete with such incendiary lines as ‘poore Kerala ko time bomb ke oopar rakha gaya hai; former deputy CM ne kahaa hai ki agle bees saal mein Kerala Islamic state ban jayega’ (all of Kerala has been placed on a time bomb; the former deputy CM has said that in the next twenty years, Kerala will become an Islamic state)’. No one seems to have ascertained whether the real-life person being alluded to actually ever said this, or has it been twisted out of context?
All the Muslim figures in the film are dark and intimidating, and ‘love jihad’ is their weapon of choice. Shalini aka Fathima Ba (Adah is a competent actor, but is made to cry and snivel through the film) finds out she’s pregnant and instantly behaves as if it’s the end of the world: she is studying to be a nurse, these are modern times, has no one heard of medical terminations? Her journey from Kerala to Sri Lanka to the ISIS camps where the Taliban reign, is filled with the most gruesome visuals — men and women and animals are hacked to pieces — and she ends up being flung into a group of women who are condemned to being ‘sex-slaves or suicide bombers’.
It is nobody’s case that the terrible events as experienced by the handful of real-life women from Kerala, or by women from other parts of the world brutalised by the Taliban, did not happen. But to claim that it is the definitive ‘Kerala Story’ and its 32,000 women, is patently false.
After two hours plus of being battered by a barrage of bad-Muslims-who-are-completing-the-job-Aurangzeb-left-hanging (not kidding, this is an actual line in the film), and listening to jibes at ‘Communists’, you wonder why those who want to create effective propaganda have not learned the tricks of the trade from the master, Leni Riefenstahl? At least then we would have been something to look at.
When a film shines a light on different aspects of an issue, it creates space for reflection and conversation, and you come away with food for thought. What about a film which does exactly the opposite? As a viewer you get to decide what you want from your film.

Razakar: The Silent Genocide Of Hyderabad Movie Review: No Holds-Barred Expose Of Masked History
This is a shocking expose of a gruesome reality behind a politically-motivated distortion of history, around the time of indian independence..
Star Cast: Bobby Simha, Tej Sapru, Makrand Deshpande, Raj Arjun, Annusriya Tripathi, Vedhika, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Thalaivasal Vijay, John Vijay
Director: Yata Satyanarayana
What’s Good: Tells us in a no-holds-barred manner about the way Hindus were tortured by a megalomaniac in the name of Islam. The film also has fabulous performances by Raj Arjun in particular as well as by Tej Sapru and Makrand Deshpande
What’s Bad: An avoidable ‘filmi’ touch merely to add masala entertainment elements, especially in the conception of songs and some clearly implausible stunts by the ‘good’ forces.
Loo Break: Not really
Watch or Not?: Yes, if you are a devotee of truth
Language: Telugu with Hindi dubbing
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 166 Minutes
The real story is set around the time India got her Independence and some princely states had to be integrated into India. The Nizam then, Mir Osman Ali Khan ( Makrand Deshpande ) refuses to do so, preferring to keep Hyderabad intact and make it an Islamic state of his dreams. His militant and despotic lieutenant and general advisor, Kasim Rizvi (Raj Arjun), unleashes a frenzy of torture, brutality, murder, rape and conversions in different parts of the state against Hindus and against Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi as languages being taught—a genocide that few Indians today are even aware about.
As Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru keeps prevaricating, intoning about a treaty India has signed, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the original Iron Man of India and the Home Minister then, decides to take stringent action even as the Nizam plans to ally with Pakistan and other Islamic nations.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Script Analysis
While the original Telugu script does not beat about the bush and shows the extreme levels of inhuman brutality shown by the militant ‘police’ (the Razakar), the Hindi lines also do complete justice to the saga of unbridled despotism out of religious fanaticism. Footage of sadism, unspeakable horrors and mayhem resorted to by the Razakar, again and again, take up most of the film’s long length while an ageing Nizam struggles to retain his royal status out of a misguided sense of power and authority.
The dialogues are chilling, and so are the situations. And the non-fanatic and righteously secular (a term not employed then!!) and nationalistic Muslims are also given the same treatment as the helpless and hapless Hindu folks by these fanatical forces.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Star Performance
If there is one actor who dazzles here, it is Raj Arjun, a man who played the evil stepfather in Secret Superstar with the same ease and aplomb as his portrayal of Shirdi Sai Baba in the web series we saw some years ago. As Rizvi, he comes across as so malevolent and tyrannical that this must be one of the most horrendous of the real-life villains we have seen so far in Hindi cinema. I can only salute him for his expressions, the way he rages, roars and otherwise modulates his voice. And his expressions and the manic look in his eyes in close-ups are simply out of this world.
Tej Sapru is excellent as the determined Sardar Patel in a performance that is as much subdued as it is intense. Makrand Deshpande brings to life the erring Nizam, who sees the light too late but cannot be punished for the genocide he sanctioned. The character of K.M. Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, an Indian independence movement activist, politician and writer from Gujarat and the founder of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, is evocatively brought out by veteran South actor Thalaivasal Vijay.
As the film is so stark and graphic about everything, the characters are all perfect for the parts, and among them, Annusriya Tripathi as one of Mir Osman Ali Khan’s wives, Vedhika as Shanthavva and Bobby Simha as Rajireddy stand out. The issue here is that all have got limited to even less (!) footage, but they all still shine in the roles given.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: Direction, Music
Director Yata Satyanarayana goes all out in his passionate zeal to expose (as in The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story and Bastar: A Naxal Story) truths hidden from all or most of the nation out of vested interests. A present Censor rule is that whatever is depicted on screen must be backed by documented facts, and clearly the depiction must be authenticated. It is horrifying how the Indian powers then distorted even relatively contemporary history out of pure malicious intent.
The film is very candid in its exhibition of reality, and while the gore may put off a section of the audience (word-of-mouth is always vital for a film’s box-office standing), I must congratulate the director, who has also co-written the script, for showing things as they were.
That said, mention must be made of the needless dramatization that elongates the film, so to speak. The dance invoking the Goddess Durga and another rousing song not only slow down the pace but also seem clearly inspired by S.S. Rajamouli! One song, contextually, is very similar to the classic Kumuram Bheemodu from RRR! The background score is also an inspiration, as are the end-credits. Then there are some action sequences akin to normal films in which the lead actors take on multiple antagonists all at once! The director should have steered clear of such needless add-ons to a terrifying saga, which, unlike the fictional RRR or the Bahubali franchise, is totally real.
The music per se is alright, ditto the fitted Hindi lyrics.
Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad Movie Review: The Last Word
Such films, sadly, in our country, are labelled as ‘propaganda’ films, even more so as the election season is on. But the truth will always be the truth, and in any case, films always work because of their resonance with the viewer.
Three and a half stars!

The author of this review himself gave away the purpose of this film. No matter what, it’s crystal clear that this is a propaganda movie releasing in the midst of elections and with ulterior motives. This movie is a fiction of BJP minded sadists imagination. Even if it was 1% true, it would have been highlighted a 1000 times by BJP in it’s 10 years rule.
Lol…so if Muslims are shown as Evil then its propoganda and if they shown as victims then its true. Doesn’t matter we will watch the movie and help BJP.

Rathnam Day 1 Box Office Collection Prediction: How Much Will Vishal’s Film Earn on First Day?
By Rohan Verma
Vishal ’s latest film, Rathnam , has been enthralling audiences since its announcement. Social media platforms are abuzz with netizens’ opinions on the film, generating anticipation about its first-day box office performance. Recent reports suggest the movie will earn well at the box office on its opening day.
Directed by Hari, the film was initially announced in April 2023 under the title Vishal 34, marking the actor’s 34 th film. The film cast includes Vishal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Samuthirakani, Ramachandra Raju, and others in significant roles. Rathnam revolves around an angry young man working for an MLA as his bodyguard. When a girl from outside the village faces threats from the residents, Rathnam steps forward to safeguard her.
With a production budget of $6 million, Rathnam is produced by Zee Studios and Stonebench Films. Additionally, the Central Board of Film Certification has awarded the film a U/A certificate.

According to Sacnilk , Rathnam is anticipated to garner approximately $124,735 in India’s net collection on its opening day. However, these figures are preliminary estimates and are subject to change by the end of the day. In terms of regional occupancy in Tamil Nadu, Dindigul leads with a 31.50% occupancy rate across eight shows.
In addition, 123telugu.com has reported that Amazon Prime Video has secured the digital rights of the film, while Zee TV has acquired its satellite rights. However, the official OTT release date remains unconfirmed. Typically, South Indian films are released on OTT platforms approximately 45-60 days after theatrical release. As Rathnam hits theaters on April 26, 2024, audiences may have to wait longer for its OTT release.
With the prediction of its first-day collection, it will be interesting to witness Rathnam’s performance at the box office by the end of its first week.

For me, the 70s marks a watershed in Hindi cinema. There's a marked difference in film-making styles, in tropes, even in fashions, that separate the 70s from the decades before. And for me, the decades before the 70s are far more interesting (I disagree with you on the 70s being the best decade for Hindi cinema - I'd say the 50s were).
